Bump... RSVP is NOT required. In spite of that, I've heard from a handful of people off list. It sounds like there'll be at least 5 of us and maybe up to 10 if those on the fence make it. Should be a good day riding through the countryside. --Smitty On Sunday, March 24, 2013 9:18:11 AM UTC-7, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote: The Wasco County Country Bike Ramble is happening on Saturday, April 6th. There'll be some agricultural land, a stretch along the Deschutes River, and many miles on quiet roads through open forest. Many of these miles are new to us (Leaf Slayer Mike helped me with the route), so be prepared to stop for frequent map consultations and to take it all in. RE: [RBW] Re: Swapping Bars Threaded Stems
So sorry about your problems, Liesl, but all miles are good miles - even those upright ones! As for the stem issue, this combo - quill adapter, and threadless stem piece -- from VO is, IMO, quite attractive - though more expensive than the Nashbar: http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/stems/quill-stems/vo-threadless-stem-adaptor.html . I think there are similar less expensive combos. Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar
Thanks Joe. With the bend noted, this just confirms what others have old me. Ditch the bar or hang it on the garage wall. Four dollars to the bike coop. A good cause. With its stamping saying GB and British Made I'd assume it's a Gerry Burgess that probably was salvaged off a Schwinn. I'm still waiting for my GB Randonneur to arrive from a group lister to put my Homer together. GB supplied the bars spec'd on many '70s Schwinns - if you see a rando bar'd Schwinn, 99% for certain they will be GBs- I've salvaged otherwise useless trash day finds just for these bars. One caveat is that they are easily bent (often found this way, I even had a 0-mph garage-fall-over ruin an otherwise perfect pair). So... It's very comfortable both on the tops straight section, curved section and straight section going to the hoods, which is the position I find myself using most often. I've discovered that its narrowness on the tops also makes it very comfortable, and have some sort of theory backed by purely empirical evidence I've gathered by doing online research, that the wider bars, which are presumably better to open the chest, compress the shoulder blades and back, whereas the narrower ones don't do this on the shoulders. Since I have no problems breathing, elbows can ge articulated and I have many issues with shoulder and neck pain when riding, I noted right away that after I got used to the narrowness of the bar, I wasn't having the expected shoulder, neck or hand pain I used to always get with the drop bars. I also read somewhere in Jan's blog or magazine that narrower drop bars work better with low trail forks whereas wider bars are better for higher trail geometries. In my very early days with my Hilsen, I tried the narrower Nitto Randonneur bar and found it uncomfortable and didn't like how it made the Hilsenhandle, so I went back to the 48 Noodles, which I still have on that bike. The Atlantis, where the current GB Randonneur resides, handles very nicely with the narrow bars but it has a low trail fork. My next step is to install the bars on the Hilsen to see how they feel on the standard geometry, and if they not only handle equally well, but also remove all the pain and issues that I have when riding the Hilsen with the 48 Noodles. Yes indeed. And I posted it on my tumblr feed, but interview with the Long Shen owners was in Rivendell Reader #25 - the “Life Before Leafblowers” edition. 2002. [RBW] Re: Pics of you on your Rivendell.
Yessir! We rode everything in Fruita BUT the bench and I dont play that even on a full suspension. It's funny, that weekend just happened to be Fat Tire Fest and we had no idea till we arrived. Needless to say we got some odd looks and comments. I passed a few MTB's going downhill and got some hoots and hollars for it. Then when they rolled up behind at the bottom asked if we were doing some cyclocrossing? I was thoroughly impressed with the Hilsen and cleaned everything I would have on my front suspension mtb, but faster on the uphills though more judiciously on the down. It was that weekend that turned my mind regarding 29er mtb's. On Friday, March 29, 2013 9:45:26 AM UTC-6, Montclair BobbyB wrote: WOW, you rode the Kokopelli trails on a Hilsen... [RBW] Re: Shimano bar-end shifters Albatross bars for commuting
Hi, Erl It sounds to me that the grip shifters have formed a bit of a bad habit. I had a commuting friend a while back who also had grip shifters on his bike, and the guy was in a new gear like every two seconds, and this was on a flat commute. He'd quickly shift through all his gears between stop lights - up and down, up and down. You can get by with far fewer gears. Even one gear. I have a slightly hilly 7-mile commute, and on those days when I ride a geared bike (I mostly commute on a Quickbeam), I switch gears maybe two or three times during the entire commute, and this is in busy LA traffic with tons of stop signs, red lights, mammoth potholes, speed bumps and idiot texting drivers. Grant talks about over-shifting in Just Ride, I think. You can get a lot more out of each gear than you think. I would suggest switching to the bar-end shifters, or even a single speed bike, just to train you off the over-shifting thing. [RBW] Re: Two rack questions
It's totally OK to use the dogbone brazeon up the chainstay. That's what they put it there for. Whether the dropout braze on or the dogbone braze on is stronger is not super important in my opinion, because I think people break the bolt far more often than they break the braze on. I like the dogbone because you can use a much longer bolt, and get more threads engaged. For the second question, I don't run the Duo, so I can't say anything smart about the load capacity with your mod. I will say that your mod looks super clean. Very nice work. Longer bolts with spacers like that are more susceptible to fatique, because of the lever arm that the spacers create. If you are the least bit worried about it, just carry one or two of those long bolts in your tool bag along with your tire levers. Carrying those spares will insure that the originals never break! :) On Friday, March 29, 2013 5:00:55 AM UTC-7, Tom Harrop wrote: Hi everyone, I have a couple of rack-mounting questions... Firstly, when I was building my Bombadil I completely missed (as in, didn't consider using) the extra braze-ons on the seatstay near the dropout, for getting the rack up a bit higher, and mounted my rear carrier directly to the dropout. As it turns out with large tyres I could use a little more room for the fender below the rack, so I'm thinking I'll try moving the rack up to the braze-ons. Just wondering if attaching to the braze-ons on the stays would lower the carrying capacity at all, compared to mounting on the dropout? My guess is that the dropout eyelets would be stronger than the braze-ons, but I don't know if that's true or not, or if it matters at all in practice. Second thing is, in the earlier thread about the new Nitto hub area rack from Riv, some people mentioned they were using Tubus Duo lowriders. I'm wondering what methods people used to attach these racks to the fork braze-ons on Riv bikes, since the racks are designed for forks with a diameter of 32 mm with a threaded hole through the blade. I've attached a pic below of how I did it. I realise the longer bolts will reduce the breaking load of the rack a little bit but I'm not planning to load up the front panniers much anyway. I'd like to hear what people think. Thanks, Tom -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Shimano bar-end shifters Albatross bars for commuting
This is a good point. I only recently picked up my first singlespeed (that's built and actually being ridden), a Dahon folder, and I'm a little shocked how not-a big-deal it is to be in one gear over varied elevations. It's already transformed the way I ride my derailer bikes, which I had clearly been over-shifting. I have the regular on my Hillborne and the Bullmoose on my Hunq. [RBW] How I made a quick release basket that can be installed and removed in seconds, or even one handed.
Hi folks, A while back I asked the groups opinion of the public bikes basket and it's quick release. The opinions I got back were negative and got me thinking on how to adapt a basket that could be installed and removed easily but be very secure. I live without a car and use my Atlantis for groceries etc. I didn't want to haul around an empty basket all the time, or deal with zip ties constantly taking the basket off and zip tying it down the next time I needed it to go to the store. So my requirements were: Instant on/off, secure, elegant, lockable to the bike and not too heavy. All was achieved but the elegance. Not ugly, but I need to paint the silver bits...lol. I run panniers and a rear rack regularly. The basket is used as an additional overload for *planned* shopping trips. Check out the photos and descriptions. I tried to be clear as I could so you could make your own if you so desired. Progress through the photos from old to new. Re: [RBW] Re: Saluki Shake Down Ride!
Fascinating, Patrick. I'm the opposite. I was über competitive pre-brain injury. One of the hardest things for me to learn was to avoid going anaerobic because of the additional stress and hormones it releases. What I discovered, for me anyway, was just how much more enjoyment I got out of doing whatever I was doing because I was doing it sustainably rather than pushing myself to the edge. An unexpected benefit of doing that was I am able to do it as fast now as pre-brain injury but with far less effort and much more enjoyment. I love what you say about the time to reflect when exerting yourself. For me, running and biking are beautiful times of prayer, active contemplation. My body working is deep time for my clay, mind, and soul. Going off on a tangent. I have a Dura-Ace Uniglide hub. The first and second position cogs are DA Uniglide. The remaining cogs and spacers are 7-speed Hyperglide (wide spline filed down). It all fits on the hub just fine. I've made indexed shifting work with a non-DA shifter and derailer, but it's a bit clunky. Re: [RBW] Re: 7 speed Dura Ace indexing versus 7 speed Shimano non-DA indexing
No, it was the amount of cable pulled for each shift that was different prior to the introduction of 9-speed SIS. The cog spacing was the same between Dura-ace and other shimano cassettes with the same number of cogs. See http://sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html. [RBW] Re: Tips for Removing Cork Grips?
I've never really had any luck doing that, as the glue I'd used was reasonably tenacious and I did not take the time. They broke up pretty well both times. You'd need something slender and sharpened, reasonably flexible to work around between the grip and the bar to separate the grip from the glue before working them off. Otherwise they do tend to break apart. You MIGHT (untested theory follows) - drill a hole in the end of one just large enough to take the business end of a compressor air hose nozzle - then see if air pressure will help you off. That used to work for rubber grips - the other option would be to slice the grip laterally and take each half off (easier to work the details with a flexible blade), then make a hollow at each end for a twine wrap when you reattach to the new bars. - Jim clearly, it's Friday... [RBW] Re: How I made a quick release basket that can be installed and removed in seconds, or even one handed.
I have used about a half dozen velcro wire ties to attach a small basket to a small front rack. You can't get them as tight as zips, so the trick is to use a bunch at opposite points. Michael On Friday, March 29, 2013 3:52:06 PM UTC-4, clayton wrote: Hi folks, A while back I asked the groups opinion of the public bikes basket and it's quick release. Re: [RBW] Re: Saluki Shake Down Ride!
I was a 5 sport letterman, I am black belt and had offers to play college football, albeit AAA schools, haha. I used to be competitive in most things but no offense to cyclists or runners in general but I just never saw them as something that needed to be competitive. I ran cross country but it was more about camaraderie than winning so I guess I just apply that mantra to cycling nowadays. More power to anyone who is disciplined enough to basically compete against themselves, though it's more than I could say for myself. I always hated weight training and aerobics during wrestling and football. I am like Bruce now, just trying to be in enough shape to enjoy the ride. On Fri, Mar 29, 2013 at 4:00 PM, Deacon Patrick lamontg...@mac.com wrote: Fascinating, Patrick. I'm the opposite. I was über competitive pre-brain injury. An unexpected benefit of doing that was I am able to do it as fast now as pre-brain injury but with far less effort and much more enjoyment. I love what you say about the time to reflect when exerting yourself. For me, running and biking are beautiful times of prayer, active contemplation. Truly, I don't consider training for running, cycling or skiing any different than practicing the instruments I play - I simply do exercises that help me reach my potential within the time constraints my life will allow. I just do stuff that will hopefully make me better at what I like doing. Participation in sport is another reason I train. I'm not competitive by nature, but I love sport. It's fun and full of emotion, which makes it a source of motivation for me. which lends consistency to my life ...and it's amazing how far we can get with consistency. do something daily for a few years and wow. participation also gets me more involved in my community - i live in a very active town where people are outside doing stuff all the time. my city hosts a marathon, a cycling stage race, triathlon nationals. we have a big 'ole lake and some mountains to play in. being a part of that community brings all kinds of positive reinforcement. and then there are the upsides of training, like good health and fitness. and being able to share fun experiences with family and friends. and reduced stress. and I sleep very well. there's a spiritual component to a good long ride or run too - i appreciate the time i get to reflect when training and never take that for granted. training and just riding are pretty much the same for me. a couple times a week, it's not just riding. but that's fine too. I still enjoy it. sorry if that was a long answer to a question that intended to be rhetorical! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] New Riv owner
Thanks -- interesting. My two remaining customs define bicycle quality -- the later one turned 10 years old this month. And over the years I experience again and again how surprising the Rivs fit and feel, when I get back on them after riding other bikes for a while, even nice bikes. The Rivs just feel like home. I can't say that about *every* Riv I've ridden, but I can say it of 3 out of 4. I must say that, as much as I love my gofast fixie custom -- I *won't* weigh it down with fat tires, racks, luggage, etc; climbing is just too much fun on it -- by far most of my riding is fast, detoured utility riding for which, basically, I want a racing bike with fatter tires and luggage. The Ram may be a new entry to this category. *Still* waiting for a wheelset for the Ram -- brother did not bring one for me this weekend. I am eager to see how I like that one -- the geometry seems right with 58 c-c st and 57 upsloped tt, c-c. Must look for wheelset at the bike shop where I just started working (Stevie's Happy Bikes in Corrales) -- interesting place with huge stock of old stuff, consignment stuff, old parts. (Bike shop gig may be temporary -- let's see if resume writing picks up -- and it is very part time and largely social, but it gives me an opportunity to trade otherwise wasted hours for the bike parts I spend so much discretionary income on.)
