Re: [RBW] Re: Internet sales tax Rivendell...thoughts?
I am glad my shop days were over before the wild open market of the internet set in. We mostly had to worry about product subverting our market area commitment via dealer agreements and promises of protected regions; if we piped product into another dealer's area through some non-listed location we would be in violation. Our continued access to those products depended upon adherence to those agreements. The internet has brought out the worst of either enforcement of those old concepts or integrity to them by those who just see the product as the media with which they keep volume flowing to make the maths work. The price is the same, but customer doesn't pay sales tax, and shipping is free on orders over a certain threshold. So the wheelset was shipped to Florida, then returned to Seattle, all to evade some taxes. Whether you are for or against taxes, it makes sense to apply them the same across the board. Small businesses like Compass Bicycles will be exempt. Rivendell, with 15 employees, isn't that small any longer. In theory, this gives small businesses an unfair advantage. A national sales tax that would be paid by everybody would solve that problem, but that's not feasible for other reasons. (That said, economies of scale are such that big companies don't have to worry about us small ones having unfair advantages.) There will be software to allow for compliance. Compare this to a bulk mailing, where you have to sort your mail based on the U.S. Postal Service's ever-changing routing arrangements. For $ 30/year, you can get simple software that does the sorting all for you. The price includes updates every few months... just like you would need because some municipality has decided to buy another ambulance and increased their sales tax by 0.1%. Re: [RBW] Re: Stan's to Paris-Roubaixs on Ram
You learn to live with them and of course that requires some compromise or another. Mine is to fix a lot of flats; others prefer protected tire systems -- systems intentionally, since some involve two casings, some thorn-proof tubes + one or more of liners, sealant, and belted tires. The internal casing (beads cut off an old tire) is a local racer thing. I am hoping that Stan's adds another weight to the rider side of the equation. So far, so good. Nothing wrong with treating that under downtube cage as storage for an extra water bottle which is then swapped with one of the more convenient empties at the next pit stop. [RBW] Re: Some details on the midwest Riv and Country Bike Rally
I want to offer a bit of detail about what this year's country bike rally participants can expect. We will be following the general course, if not the exact route, of the Almanzo 100, over two days of riding. Almanzo cue sheets, last I checked, were available for download. The Almanzo course is mostly gravel, which can be highly variable between smooth and pavement-like to gnarly loose gravel with potholes. The terrain is quite hilly by Midwestern standards, but splitting the route into 2 days and taking a leisurely pace should make it less of an ordeal. Weather, as always, will be a factor. It's certain that bikes will get dirty, and possible that rocks will chip the paint. That's life. We will ride as a group and regroup as needed when we get separated by hills or whatever. That said, this is a ride at your own risk situation. Any participant is free to opt out for any reason, but there is no support car to pick you up if that happens. Hopefully we can support each other and all have a good ride without incident. But stuff happens, and every rider should accept the inherent risks and have some kind of backup plan. We will pass through a couple small towns where we may be able to eat in cafes and get groceries. But for the most part, plan to have the day's food/water on the bike. Any other questions? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It looks like QR knob thingy works in conjunction with the reach adjustment screw. The farther in that screw is the more slack you get in the housing by turning the red knob. The knob is awkward to turn and I'd guess is probably more trouble than it's worth for such a small amount of travel. I might just dremel the dam thing off on my set. [RBW] Re: First Aid Kits
As I mentioned in a previous thread, I carry a very minimal kit, and use everything in it for others things. Here's what I carry/use (which presumes more woodland, backroad riding) -- blood clotting agent/disinfectant: pine needle dust or freshly smoked pipe ash. Combine with spit, place on wound, allow to dry, and good to go for every situation I've faced so far (including some fairly deep gashes on shins from slipping on a rough boulder). I used to carry Matcha green tea for this, but found the others just as effective and nothing extra for me to carry. -- (2) pocket knives: Small penknife and larger folding knife with big locking blade and saw. Dig out splinters, thorns, and the like. Make a splint from sticks if necessary (never has been, but I've done it in practice) for twisted ankles or broken bones. -- Bandanas or buffs. For wrapping or binding or tying off as needed. -- Phone for all rides/runs, GPS emergency beacon for multi-day solo trips or long remote day rides. That's it. First aid is more about knowledge than materials. Going off the idea that everything I need is already out there in the woods, I carry only those things that would be harder to make work without them. [RBW] Re: First Aid Kits
A week or so ago, I was out for a jaunt on the local greenbelt, enroute home... most of the people on the path, I'd seen earlier on my way out, and was passing 'em all in reverse-order.Came upon a mother and her two kids who were at the end of one of the longer bridge-spans along the path. I'm usually fairly cheerful in greeting folks, and having said hi earlier, started to say hi again. My smile quickly melted as I could see the look on the mom's face. She was glad to have me see her, but was obviously anxious, holding her daughter's hand, with the son on the other side of the path w/ his and his sister's bikes. I quickly hop off, noticing the blood on the mother's hand. She quickly explained that a moment or so earlier, someone was riding along too fast and had her daughter scrambling while on the bridge, which can be quite slippery; her daughter had caught her fingernail and partially pulled it away, and was bleeding fairly freely. All the mom was asking for was a band-aid, if I happened to have had such.Unfortunately, no, I didn't... however, I had a nice, clean and unused bandana in my saddlebag... I quickly whipped it out, and gently wrapped up the gal's finger, then had her apply pressure for it. I then started to balance her bike on my bike, and was going to turn around and accompany them back the other direction, towards their car... however, the mother didn't want me to, and so I helped her balance her daughter's bike on her bike instead, and departed, in my original direction. I *really* would rather have helped them back to the car, but, I could also imagine that perhaps a strange guy tagging along might have also seemed uncomfortable, so I wasn't going to 'insist', and only do what the mom wanted me to do. I still wonder how the girl's finger is doing.I hope it's well... On Tuesday, May 21, 2013 1:40:05 PM UTC-4, Minh wrote: So i have to admit that i'm generally a no-plans, take it as you go rider. I'm currently running a Shimano hyperglide freewheel cogset on a Phil hub, with Campagnolo Racing T derailleur. I like it; no problems and it rolls very smoothly. If I build a 650B wheel, do I have to use the same freewheel cogs? Like, exactly the same model? If you did you'd have lower gears throughout the range, due to the smaller wheel size. If I put a different 7-speed freewheel, how much derailleur tuning would be required? Could I put on an 8-speed freewheel and still use the Campy derailleur? Lots of tuning at that point? The issue is going to be the capacity of the rear derailleur. I have no idea what the maximum sprocket size that rear derailleur will fit. However, if by tuning you mean adjusting the high and low range stop screws, they should not require adjustment because all the Shimano Hyperglide 7 speed freewheels should have the same width and same spacing between sprockets. 8 speed is wider, and (at least, according to Sheldon) although 8 speed freewheels were marketed for a little while, they had problems and have pretty much disappeared from the marketplace. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. You can use any freewheel you want, and the rear derailleur , as long as it's within it's total capacity(which can usually be stretched) will work just fine. [RBW] Re: 650B Conversion -- freewheel compatibility?
Your Racing T derailer was designed to work with cogs up to 29 teeth (will probably work with 30) and at least 9 speeds, so as long as you're within that range any 7/8/9 freewheel or cassette will work. If you're running 7-speed Shimano index shifting, you'll get away with a new 7 freewheel with minimal tuning. 8 or 9 will require a new rear shifter. Joe Bernard Vallejo, CA. Re: [RBW] Re: What is the Rivish upgrade from Synergy rims?
If I were up-grading, I would begin with tires. Choose lighter more supple. That rules out cheaper but not necessarily more flat resistant. Next I would look at hubs, unless I had a really substandard rim. If you listen to experienced wheel builders they all rate Mavic and Velocity rims highly. e.g from Peter Whites web site, Velocity and Mavic make the best rims I've found. Until recently I have ridden exclusively on 700c wheels and primarily on Mavic rims. Never had a bad one. I dented a Velocity rim on a curb, that wasn't the rims fault. For years I rode Campy NR hubs and found them durable and very easy to service. Ultegra hubs do seem to hold up better than the 105s, but for the money I have found the White Ind Hubs to be super. I use them on both my Ram Bilenkey tandem. I have a lot of bikes to maintain, mine, my wives, my daughters son-in-laws and have really come to appreciate low maintenance parts. That said, I have never been willing to spring for a PW hub; it just feels like overkill. But I do like PW BBs. Michael I just bought a fabulous Saluki with a basic wheel set. At some point I will probably upgrade the hubs. Rims, well maybe. I'd be happy to make a reservation (I can look into the group site but we may not have enough people to make it cost effective) but I imagine we could just show up and get sites. Then for a ride we could out-n-back as far up the valley as possible (up to snow). From the N Fork CG we have what looks like 2 good options... the main road (FS 23) along the main trunk of the Cispus River or Road 22 along the North Fork Cispus River. Maybe plan to roll out of the CG for the Rumble Ride shortly after noon? There was talk amongst some PDXers of taking the Amtrak to Centralia. [RBW] Re: Betty Foy and Red Brooks
Worried, I spoke to Bill from Wallbike. He says that the old Brooks colored saddles were a black or brown saddle topped with a different color. The abrasion on the saddle made the true color show through almost immediately. Brooks has changed the way these saddles are made over the past few years - something about using a new tanner. Re: [RBW] Re: Freedom of the Bicycle
Patrick, Great poem! Interestingly I was reminiscing about my life with and on a bicycle. I was taught by a neighbor a small Japanese girl named Janine it was this huge black bike and I would ride it and crash into a neighbors garage door, later I recall becoming accomplished and loving the ride. Through the years I too went through phases with the bicycle 1. Learning 2. The Freedom of getting from one place to another efficiently. 3. The allure of the car as the grown up method of transportation. 4. The rediscovering of that freedom that really only the bicycle can offer. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedalpusher61/8767799947/ I grew up in a small town in Northern California and my entire Family would get on bikes and go for a ramble. I love bikes and especially love steel ones. Thanks again Deacon Patrick very cool indeed. ~Hugh On Monday, May 20, 2013 5:22:43 AM UTC-7, Patrick Moore wrote: Talking About Bicycles Talking about bicycles, said my friend, I have been through the four ages. I can remember a time in early childhood when a bicycle meant nothing to me: it was just part of the huge meaningless background of grown-up gadgets against which life went on. Then came a time when to have a bicycle, and to have learned to ride it, and to be at last spinning along on one's own, early in the morning, under trees, in and out of the shadows, was like entering Paradise. That apparently effortless and frictionless gliding--more like swimming than any other motion, but really most like the discovery of a fifth element--that seemed to have solved the secret of life. Now one would begin to be happy. But, of course, I soon reached the third period. Pedalling to and fro from school (it was one of those journeys that feel up-hill both ways) in all weathers, soon revealed the prose of cycling. The bicycle, itself, became to me what his oar is to a galley slave. But what was the fourth age? I asked. I am in it now, or rather I am frequently in it. I have had to go back to cycling lately now that there's no car. And the jobs I use it for are often dull enough. But again and again the mere fact of riding brings back a delicious whiff of memory. I recover the feelings of the second age. What's more, I see how true they were--how philosophical, even. For it really is a remarkably pleasant motion. To be sure, it is not a recipe for happiness as I then thought. In that sense the second age was a mirage. But a mirage of something. How do you mean?, said I. I mean this. Whether there is, or whether there is not, in this world or in any other, the kind of happiness which one's first experiences of cycling seemed to promise, still, on any view, it is something to have had the idea of it. The value of the thing promised remains even if that particular promise was false--even if all possible promises of it are false.
