Most importantly I learned how important it is to Just get back on the bike which is one of the mottos of the ride, despite dealing with leg cramps and saddle sores and a group that dropped me after every put stop (with my blessings of course) I managed to keep getting back on the bike knowing that what I was going through was nothing compared to what cancer patients and their families live with every day. The event raised 19.1 Million Dollars and I remain hopeful that Cancer will be beaten in my lifetime. The roadeo itself rode beautifully and attracted a few appreciative comments particularly form the bike mechanics who donated their time as well as needed parts for riders in distress at every pit stop. I look forward to making the needed fit adjustments which will serve to make the bike even more comfortable and lively, I cannot imagine how painful the ride would have been on a different bike. t will upload more photos tomorrow -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. thanks for the report - now I'm jonesing better thai food than we can get here... On Monday, June 10, 2013 12:14:52 AM UTC-5, Statrixbob wrote: And now the final bit, at least for now. I think that I might have been slightly more comfortable with one of my reliable B-17s (like the I did this ride with on Memorial Day). On the other hand it may simple be the way I was feeling today. I'd really have to A/B this several times to report reliably. The saddle did pick up a bit of dirt today, mostly from my hands though I tried to be careful. It is the natural color version and this wouldn't be an issue with black or another darker color. So far so good with the Cambium. I think it's really going to come down to a matter of taste as to whether one likes this thing or not. I'm not going to switch out all my leather saddles for the C-17, but I'm finding it to be a quality product that's comfortable without break-in, looks good if it's to your taste, and doesn't involve livestock. The ride itself was nice. I had a couple of mechanical issues after 60 or so miles. I started hearing a lot of rattling. On my RIvs that's pretty rare so I slowed and tried to narrow down the noise. Turns out that, even though I did use beeswax, one of my bottle cages had loosened. Not a biggie. A couple turns with a handy tool and I was off ...only to find that I could seem to select certain gears and when I tried I heard...a lot of rattling. Hmmm...this seemed a bit more serious so I immediately pulled over. Looking down at the rear derailleur I discovered that a bit of wire had wrapped itself around the rear cassette. It took a couple of minutes to untangle but didn't do any damage. Once I took off my gears worked normally and everything was silent again. When I got to Haleiwa I had a quick smoothie and then sat outside at a Thai place so I could get a nice bowl of Tom Ka - Thai coconut based soup. Yum. Just thing after a long ride. I then hopped the regular bus (all our buses have bike racks) and my troubles really began. I had no trouble putting bike in the rack, fit fine and the springed loop was tight around my front wheel. The driver braked and moved and braked while I was trying pay and I figured, Oh great, a cowboy. How right I was. This guy really braked hard, cornered poorly, and I swear he hunted out potholes (though I won't put that one in my complaint). In any case as we approached town (after 30 miles? of cowboy driving) he called out and said, You'd better get your bike, you didn't put it on properly. BS. In any case, the springed loop was off and my biking was leaning forward pretty far. I secured it and had to endure a lecture from the driver on using bungie cords (I've never needed one before btw). Finally I just said fine, I'll take my bike. I took it off, he drove away and I discovered I was f'd. The bike had leaned so far forward it has actually damaged my rear rim. It wobbled something fierce and I figured I'd have to true it up. I wish. As it turns out the rim was actually cracked. It didn't look particularly safe to ride, but after opening the back brake I gave it a try and decided that as it was broken anyway I might as well try to get home the final 6 miles. It held. Not something I'd really want to do but I take really low traffic streets so I figured it was better than walking. I've got a few photos from the ride today and you can see a couple pictures of the rim taken after the fact. When I got home I switched seat posts and saddles with the Quickbeam so I can ride to work tomorrow. Patrick, Sorry for the late reply, but I try not to do much computing on the weekends. Just two comments, one, how many flats do you normally get in 100 miles? Actually, I use Stan's on a few of my bikes and love it. Haven't had any problems yet. At all.Secondly, I can understand your issues with your DuraAce setup. Stick with it. But jeez, if you haven't used index in 20+ years, why would you stick with the same indexing that's 20+ years worn? Enjoy the ride. With some bikes, ~75 feels overgeared. I assume this has to do with very many things, but perhaps among them are the tires and the fit/position. Funny, I tend to do most of my riding in the 16-17-18 range: 74, 70, and 66, with a drop to 60 for steeper uphills. The Ram has carried up to 47 lb in the rear (Fly) with just a bit of stress, and it handles rear loads of 35 lb without any qualms. # flats/100 miles: it can vary with my routes; In a good week, none or perhaps just one. In a bad week with the Parigi Roubaix before Stan's, seven or more. I went through ~100 patches between Jan 1 and mid May of this year, though this usage included a spate of flats due to a thorn or thorns hidden in one of the P-R's carcase for a total of some 20 patches applied over the course of a weekend. I recently bought 2 boxes of 100, with the hope that they'll last me a couple of years. Indexing: I don't think that the shifters or derailleurs are worn; they feel tight to me and they work well enough. Re: [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?
Hi All, I live in San Luis Obispo. (SLO) I met DougP and his wife when they visited some months back. There are several Rivs in town though I'm most familiar with the Atlantis crowd (me, George, and Hank). For perspective I'm mostly a work / commuter rider. I ride 16 miles RT from SLO to Cuesta College (halfway between SLO and Morro Bay) most days and shopping / get around on weekends. This gives me the 90+ miles / week I enjoy. I should mention that the coast can be very over cast in summers and that the prevailing wind is Nortwest and can be real work in the afternoons. One other camp ground option is El Chorro Regional Park http://www.slocountyparks.com/activities/el_chorro.htm This is 7 miles from the train station / town and at the edge of the marine influence. There is also a Hostel a block from the train station but I've never stayed there though it's been a going enterprise for years. http://www.hostelobispo.com/ In an earlier post some mentioned our weather. I should comment that it's fairly unique in that SLO is a Mediterranean climate mostly in the mid 70's - low 80's in the summer. Contrast this with 15 miles away up the Cuesta Grade on the other side of the Santa Lucia range the temperature is generally in the 90's to low 100's consistently in the summer. A 30 degree difference is those few miles is common and makes biking in the Paso Robles area much less comfortable. This is also the beginning of tourist season. The town empties of students and fills with visitors though it's mostly confined to the downtown core. I imagine there's a premium on hotel rooms and camping spots. Although it's not likely I'll be joining you on rides, minor surgery in the works, I'm happy to share what I know. We could do the hiker/biker sites for the train travelers but that wouldn't work for those that drive there. The best of the leftovers to me is Morro Strand SP. Flush toilets, closer to a decent size town, and not to far from the train station in SLO. any other ideas? The Motel 6's ( two of them) are 5 miles south of SLO and charge $106/n. The south one is better BTW. ~mike On Saturday, June 8, 2013 1:36:04 PM UTC-7, Anne Paulson wrote: As I recall, there are a couple of restaurants in San Simeon, but it's not a very big town. I also recall once, a long long time ago, riding north from Morro Bay up Big Sur. Beautiful, but very very strong headwinds. That was in the spring; the summer has smaller winds I think. Re: [RBW] Roadeo Ride report with a twist
Hi Trevor, Sorry for your loss! As a cancer researcher, I thank you for your fund-raising efforts to fight this disease. I will use your perseverance as inspiration to overcome my difficulties. Best wishes, Toshi in Oakland P.S. On a lighter note, I don't know if your assessment of the bar-end shifters is a Freudian slip, but one thing you can do is set it up Riv-style with 2 left shifters, or what I've found is that I got a set of 10-speed Microshift bar-end shifters and reversed the left and right sides. I used the indexed 10-spd shifter as the left shifter to shift my front derailleur and the friction left shifter to shift on my right side rear cassette. It works beautifully that way! My Roadeo has a Sugino triple crank and takes care of all my gearing issues :). Hi Oren, Seems like they are a little closer from the train station than Morro Bay and the Edna Valley is a very nice place to ride. .But does Biddle allow camping? All I see is day use. Lopez is nice but pretty hot on some days if I recall as it is about 12 miles inland. I guess we need to decide where to camp. and do you have any suggestions on mixed surface rides? ~mike On Sunday, June 9, 2013 5:50:48 PM UTC-7, oren wrote: i live in SLO. all stated above are great ideas. another suggestion for the camping would be biddle co park. i believe there is camping there. it isnt too inland (not incredibly hot). it is out edna valley area so therefor it is close to the train station and it is an absolutely beautiful bike ride. there is also camping very near by at lopez lake. [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?
Mike it's true that Lopez is inland, more remote, and warmer. I too believe Biddle is day camping only. There are many options around SLO. Out to the coast and back, See Canyon for climbing, it depends on how much time and energy you want to spend in the saddle. Mitch Browne San Luis Obispo, CA On Monday, June 10, 2013 3:32:18 PM UTC-7, Mike Schiller wrote: Hi Oren, Seems like they are a little closer from the train station than Morro Bay and the Edna Valley is a very nice place to ride. .But does Biddle allow camping? [RBW] Longboards for 26 wheels?
With the monthlong no-shipping-fee promotion, I may just spring for a pair of cream longboards -- not quite as superfluous as this may sound despite our droughth and 1 of rain this year to date, since our monsoon starts in a month. I'll probably just install on one bike -- if we get more than a month of very occasional rain, I'll be lighting candles at church -- and it makes sense to install on the errand fixie Riv, which has 559X32 mm wheels, just shy of 25 in diameter. Any ideas how the 45 mm longboards will fit onto this bike? I expect to remove the flap, and I don't mind the fender just an inch or two above the ground, but has anyone experience with these on a 26 wheeled bike? -- http://resumespecialties.com/index.html patrickmo...@resumespecialties.com Albuquerque, NM -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
