 46cm Noodle Bars

 42/26 White Industries Crank
 Ultegra/Open Pro Wheelset
 11-28 cassette

What I learned during the ride

4 rides totalling 125km over a 2 month span DOES NOT constitute and
adequate training plan for a ride covering 200km over 2 days
Riding a bike over 200km before you have dialed in the fit in NOT a good
 idea
a 42/28 crankset is perfect for handling the most extreme climbs (their
were 4 brutal ones over the two days) however it leaves you short on the
flats and struggling to keep up, this crankset will be moved to a 650b
commuter/rando bike and replace with a 46/32 crank that will serve me much
better assuming i train a little harder for next year which should not be
 hard

Its been a rough 2 months since I lost my beloved wife to Cancer, she was
my inspiration from the day I met her and will be to the day I die. Most
importantly I learned how important it is to Just get back on the bike
which is one of the mottos of the ride, despite dealing with leg cramps and
saddle sores and a group that dropped me after every put stop (with my
blessings of course) I managed to keep getting back on the bike knowing
that what I was going through was nothing compared to what cancer patients
and their families live with every day. The event raised 19.1 Million
Dollars and I remain hopeful that Cancer will be beaten in my lifetime.

The roadeo itself rode beautifully and attracted a few appreciative
comments particularly form the bike mechanics who donated their time as
well as needed parts for riders in distress at every pit stop. I look
forward to making the needed fit adjustments which will serve to make the
bike even more comfortable and lively, I cannot imagine how painful the
ride would have been on a different bike.

t will upload more photos tomorrow

When I got to Haleiwa I had a quick smoothie and then sat outside at a
Thai place so I could get a nice bowl of Tom Ka - Thai coconut based soup.
Yum. Just thing after a long ride.

I then hopped the regular bus (all our buses have bike racks) and my
troubles really began. I had no trouble putting bike in the rack, fit fine
and the springed loop was tight around my front wheel. The driver braked
and moved and braked while I was trying pay and I figured, Oh great, a
 cowboy.

How right I was. This guy really braked hard, cornered poorly, and I swear
he hunted out potholes (though I won't put that one in my complaint).

In any case as we approached town (after 30 miles? of cowboy driving) he
called out and said, You'd better get your bike, you didn't put it on
properly. BS. In any case, the springed loop was off and my biking was
leaning forward pretty far. I secured it and had to endure a lecture from
the driver on using bungie cords (I've never needed one before btw).
Finally I just said fine, I'll take my bike. I took it off, he drove away
 and I discovered I was f'd.

The bike had leaned so far forward it has actually damaged my rear rim. It
wobbled something fierce and I figured I'd have to true it up. I wish. As
it turns out the rim was actually cracked. It didn't look particularly safe
to ride, but after opening the back brake I gave it a try and decided that
as it was broken anyway I might as well try to get home the final 6 miles.
It held. Not something I'd really want to do but I take really low traffic
streets so I figured it was better than walking.

I've got a few photos from the ride today and you can see a couple
pictures of the rim taken after the fact.

When I got home I switched seat posts and saddles with the Quickbeam so I
can ride to work tomorrow. I'll take a few pictures of how it looks on the
QB and let everyone know how I like it on a single speed.

about 1 difference right now, and that could decrease -- but with our warm
weather winds I've been riding recently 8 miles at a stretch into headwinds
and it feels quite good. I use no gloves, but the very sensitive heel of my
left hand is surprisingly comfortable. I may have to raise the brake bodies
a wee bit on the bar's curve.

I think I've got the saddle where it needs to be -- perhaps a wee bit too
high, but the position is the wonderful (and on some bikes, elusive)
perfect spot where you feel you are perfectly far behind the bb so that
there is no awkwardness either while spinning fast or while torquing hard
 to gain momentum.

The 7-speed Dura Ace system, in indexed mode, requires an annoying fine
tune between over- and under-shifting: reminds me why I've not used
indexing for 20+ years until now -- hell, even derailleurs are newish. I
use it now because, dammit, I have a 7400 indexing system and it *will*
work for me. There is a very mild rattle once a crank rotation that must
come from the rear derailleur because it's not from the front; but it's
mild enough that I attribute it to default derailleur behavior and not the
 indexing.

I find that, unladen, the Ram cruises nicely in the 74 gear and that the
70 gear feels light, proof to me of pedaling efficiency, something I
don't find with every bike. With some bikes, ~75 feels overgeared. I
assume this has to do with very many things, but perhaps among them are the
 tires and the fit/position.

Funny, I tend to do most of my riding in the 16-17-18 range: 74, 70, and
66, with a drop to 60 for steeper uphills.

The Ram has carried up to 47 lb in the rear (Fly) with just a bit of
stress, and it handles rear loads of 35 lb without any qualms. Overall, for
me, that very nice combination of unladen spriteliness and rear load
capacity. I managed to bust one of the Y struts holding the single rack
strut to the seatstay braze ons, so I scavenged another single strut from
the Logo to replace it as shown. The other seatstay braze on can hold a
 bracket for a rear light.

I think I'm going to convert it into a fixed gear (though that will mean
Dremeling off the shifter braze-ons and the derailleur hangar).

I think I've got the saddle where it needs to be -- perhaps a wee bit

there is no awkwardness either while spinning fast or while torquing hard
 to gain momentum.

There is a very mild rattle once a crank rotation that must
come from the rear derailleur because it's not from the front; but it's
mild enough that I attribute it to default derailleur behavior and not the
 indexing.

I find that, unladen, the Ram cruises nicely in the 74 gear and that
the 70 gear feels light, proof to me of pedaling efficiency, something I
don't find with every bike. With some bikes, ~75 feels overgeared. I
assume this has to do with very many things, but perhaps among them are the
 tires and the fit/position.

Funny, I tend to do most of my riding in the 16-17-18 range: 74, 70,
and 66, with a drop to 60 for steeper uphills.

Re: [RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-10 Thread Mitch Browne
Hi All,

I live in San Luis Obispo. (SLO) I met DougP and his wife when they visited
some months back.

There are several Rivs in town though I'm most familiar with the Atlantis
crowd (me, George, and Hank).

For perspective I'm mostly a work / commuter rider. I ride 16 miles RT from
SLO to Cuesta College (halfway between SLO and Morro Bay) most days and
shopping / get around on weekends. This gives me the 90+ miles / week I
enjoy.

I should mention that the coast can be very over cast in summers and that
the prevailing wind is Nortwest and can be real work in the afternoons. One
other camp ground option is El Chorro Regional Park
http://www.slocountyparks.com/activities/el_chorro.htm This is 7 miles from
the train station / town and at the edge of the marine influence. There is
also a Hostel a block from the train station but I've never stayed there
though it's been a going enterprise for years.

http://www.hostelobispo.com/

In an earlier post some mentioned our weather. I should comment that it's
fairly unique in that SLO is a Mediterranean climate mostly in the mid 70's
- low 80's in the summer. Contrast this with 15 miles away up the Cuesta
Grade on the other side of the Santa Lucia range the temperature is
generally in the 90's to low 100's consistently in the summer. A 30 degree
difference is those few miles is common and makes biking in the Paso Robles
area much less comfortable.

This is also the beginning of tourist season. The town empties of students
and fills with visitors though it's mostly confined to the downtown core. I
imagine there's a premium on hotel rooms and camping spots.

Although it's not likely I'll be joining you on rides, minor surgery in the
works, I'm happy to share what I know.

Simeon has only the primitive section open ( no showers) . We could do

The best of the leftovers to me is Morro Strand SP. Flush toilets,

Re: [RBW] Roadeo Ride report with a twist

2013-06-10 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Hi Trevor,

Sorry for your loss! As a cancer researcher, I thank you for your
fund-raising efforts to fight this disease. I will use your
perseverance as inspiration to overcome my difficulties.

Best wishes,
Toshi in Oakland

P.S. On a lighter note, I don't know if your assessment of the bar-end
shifters is a Freudian slip, but one thing you can do is set it up
Riv-style with 2 left shifters, or what I've found is that I got a set
of 10-speed Microshift bar-end shifters and reversed the left and
right sides. I used the indexed 10-spd shifter as the left shifter
to shift my front derailleur and the friction left shifter to shift on
my right side rear cassette. It works beautifully that way! My Roadeo
has a Sugino triple crank and takes care of all my gearing issues :).

Kelly looks like you all have had a great time. Except the poor soul with
all the flats and I'm sure they still enjoyed the time not repairing flats.
Look forward to your thoughts from the ride. I especially liked the hats
too. Great images you've captured. I usually like close ups and middle
distance shots which you've done a superb job!

Best,

Hi Oren, Seems like they are a little closer from the train station than
Morro Bay and the Edna Valley is a very nice place to ride. .But does
Biddle allow camping? All I see is day use. Lopez is nice but pretty hot
on some days if I recall as it is about 12 miles inland.

I guess we need to decide where to camp.

and do you have any suggestions on mixed surface rides?

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

Mike it's true that Lopez is inland, more remote, and warmer. I too believe
Biddle is day camping only.

There are many options around SLO. Out to the coast and back, See Canyon
for climbing, it depends on how much time and energy you want to spend in
the saddle.

Hi Oren, Seems like they are a little closer from the train station than

Biddle allow camping? All I see is day use. Lopez is nice but pretty hot
on some days if I recall as it is about 12 miles inland.

I guess we need to decide where to camp.

and do you have any suggestions on mixed surface rides?

bike ride. there is also camping very near by at lopez lake.

[RBW] Longboards for 26 wheels?

2013-06-10 Thread PATRICK MOORE
With the monthlong no-shipping-fee promotion, I may just spring for a pair
of cream longboards -- not quite as superfluous as this may sound despite
our droughth and 1 of rain this year to date, since our monsoon starts
in a month.

I'll probably just install on one bike -- if we get more than a month of
very occasional rain, I'll be lighting candles at church -- and it makes
sense to install on the errand fixie Riv, which has 559X32 mm wheels, just
shy of 25 in diameter.

Any ideas how the 45 mm longboards will fit onto this bike? I expect to
remove the flap, and I don't mind the fender just an inch or two above the
ground, but has anyone experience with these on a 26 wheeled bike?

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-10 Thread Mike Schiller
Mitch from SLO ( Atlantis owner) emailed me some info about El Chorro
County park, which is on the road between SLO and Morro Bay. There is
camping there and they have showers.
http://www.slocounty.ca.gov/Page11103.aspx This looks like another option.
I don't know if there are any food options nearby, so not optimal, but
could work.

Still looking for routes. Like to have some backcountry roads with some
dirt thrown in. The See Canyon/Prefuma rd has a fairly long climb with a
dirt section.

Re: [RBW] Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look

2013-06-10 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I've now moved the C-17 over to my Quickbeam. After the demise of my Hunq's
rear wheel it seemed to be the right move. I put in about 12 miles so far
today and, once again, the saddle was good. And as I'd moved the entire
seat post I didn't really have to spend any time get the angle right.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157634057431129/

That's probably it for now on this topic for me unless someone has specific
questions. I'll keep riding it and fill out the surveys Brooks sends me.
Maybe at the end of the summer I'll post a long term review.

I may also move it over to my Bike Friday in a week or two in preparation
for RAGBRAI 2013 http://ragbrai.com/. Of course I'll be posting that
report to the BF list. :-) Anyone from this list going to the ride in Iowa
this year?

Aloha,

Bob

Blue. While I like the green, the blue is regal, and a Rivendell custom --
even an old and scratched specimen -- is regal.
