2013-06-20 Thread Manuel Acosta
After a couple of weeks of hashing out the details looks like we have come
to a consensus of what's going on.

Rivendell Rumble (Cali Edition)
July 27-28
Meet at El Chorro campgrounds around 12ish.

Various of folks are coming earlier or later feel free to do what cha want.

Ride somewhere on that Sunday.
Bring food, stories, and your bikes to share.
Should be a blast!

Anyone want to make a poster of the event I am more then happy to donate
one of my photos for a event poster.

Also someone needs to add this to the RBW owners bunch calendar. (Totally
forgot the link)

Let me know if this looks right.

[RBW] ISO: 7cm Technomic Deluxe 190mm quill height 26.0

Wondering if anyone has one.

I have these things to trade for it. Pick one:

7cm Technomic Standard - 225quill 26.0 clamp.

6cm Technomic Standard - 225quill 26.0 clamp.

Nitto Moustache bar 26.0 clamp. In great shape but has a few scratches on
right side of sleeve collar.

Nitto Moustache bar collar says 25.4, but RBW says it is really 26.0 (only
about 150 miles on it. In like new shape). No scratches on collar. Just
bought from Riv in April?

[RBW] FS: A. Homer Hilsen 67cm DTT

2013-06-20 Thread LouisvillePatrick
Friends,

The time has come that I must part ways with my Hilsen. I've decided to start
playing music professionally again, and need to free up some cash for a bass
amplifier. For now, my Fargo will handle all cycling business. An able steed,
indeed.

Pictures of the bike are here:
www.flickr.com/bassandbike

I'd considered selling the bike complete, and I'm still willing to, but I'm
more likely to sell off the frame/fork/bb/headset first. It is in wonderful
shape with only minor, normal usage skuffs and very little chainstay rub. No
dents or major scratches.

2010 67cm A. Homer Hilsen frame and fork with Tange Levin Headset and Phil Wood
BB: $1700.00 or best offer. PayPal preferred. We can split shipping.

Questions are welcome and thanks for reading!

[RBW] fs: Rivendell Rambouillet 58cm frameset - orange - pristine condition!

2013-06-20 Thread Eric
Pristine condition Rivendell Rambouillet...comes with original box! I'm not
sure who'd get excited about the original box but I'm sure there's a few
folks. I purchased this early '12 (or late '11) via CL and it's in amazing
condition! The prior owner stated a few hundred miles & it shows! I never
built it up but kept it safely tucked away. Apart from the protective clear
stickers on the headtube & bike shop decal on downtube (both of which can
be removed w/ no problem) it's next to mint. Anyways, they don't make 'em
like this anymore. Frame, fork & headset (I believe Tange Levin?).

$1100 or trade for a dark blue (or custom color) 59cm Rivendell A. Homer
Hilsen w/ three water bottle mounts.

[RBW] Recent Thread Drift

2013-06-20 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Was unexpectedly on the road this week, and hadn't been paying close
attention to established, on-topic threads.I want to thank the list
members who called my attention to the Brooks thread which devolved
considerably from anything remotely RBW-specific.

I've locked the topic and would appreciate it if folks would let it drop.

More importantly, I'd like to ask folks to keep broader topics on broader
forums and discussion lists. To be clear, I think it was really nice to
get a preview review of a new product from a company which is obviously
supported by Rivendell.

It's the further deviations which are outside the scope of this group.

thanks!

[RBW] Re: Albatross or Noodles - Help Me Decide

2013-06-20 Thread Minh
I ride both, on bikes with very similiar dimensions (both riv's), they are
very different and both good.

the albas look less serious, but you can go pretty fast with them, the
upright position is comfortable, the curves allow you to stretch out a bit
and they are so wide (way wider then even the widest noodles), that you can
get plenty of leverage climbing.

the noodles are great drop bars, no complaints, great ramps, comfortable
over time, it's just a different ride

if you've been riding drops for a long time and just want to try something
different then you should try the albas. short of testing them yourself
it's hard for us to really tell you one is better then the other.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet

2013-06-20 Thread George Schick
Yeah, the word circulating around back then was that it might've been a
2-coat job using House of Kolor Shimrin base coat metallic BC08 "Nova
Orange" followed by a clear coat KK14 (formerly UK14) kandy koat "Spanish
Gold." Riv will neither confirm or deny any of this; I'm kinda thinking
that whoever they used to paint the first batch of Ram's was given the
directive to come up with a real eye-catcher to serve as a kind of "loss
leader" for the new frame. It worked. Although their paint jobs are good,
none have ever been the same as those early Ram frames.

The price on this stuff is mighty precious - $50-$60 for a quart of the
base coat and around $40 for just 8oz of the Spanish Gold (which is now
only sold as an intensifier implying, I assume, that a final third clear
coat would be necessary). 'Course, they reduce this stuff considerably
before spraying so small quantities go a long way, but no painter is going
to spend that kind of money just for one bike frame - unless maybe you'd by
the paint for them. I 'spose another way to approach it would be to find
someone who is in the process of putting together a show car hot rod and
sweet talk him into these color combo's. Then find a way to get the
painter to do the frame at the same time.

[RBW] Re: Albatross or Noodles - Help Me Decide

2013-06-20 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I had Noodles at around saddle height on my Sam for 2 years before recently
switching to Albas. For me, the top tube was just too long with the drops,
even with an 8 cm stem. I'm running the Albas with an 11 cm stem and I
really like them. My commuting time didn't change and I am much more
comfortable.

Jay
Unrelated - Commuting time did increase when I fell a few weeks ago and my
saddle angle changed. I decided to keep the raised nose, but wa measurable
slower until I raised the saddle height to compensate. All better now :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet

2013-06-20 Thread Peter Morgano
I agree with Steve, that is a 3 stage paint. I would guess a base orange,
a golden pearl and then a clear (maybe 4 stage with a white or gold under
the orange to make it pop). Impossible to match with a touch up due to how
the pearl lays down when it is sprayed. I cant believe they went all out
on paint jobs like that back then but whoever did them must have been
pretty good, working with pearls can get tricky.

There is no experience like first hand :)

Most anyone who has ridden a bike with Alba bars has also ridden with drops

experience . When I first tried them, I said Wow, I can see everything so
much better ! Sure you can mount drop bars real high, but the bars are
apples and oranges .. both handlebars but both different. Try them,
you have nothing to lose and everything to gain . You can set them up with
bar end shifters and mtb levers, or bar end brake levers and thumb
shifters. Some use a stem mounted shifter. Use your imagination and just
have fun if it's no fun .. it's no use !

[RBW] Albatross or Noodles - Help Me Decide

2013-06-20 Thread Johnny Alien
So I am in the beginning stages of ordering up a Sam Hillborne and I am really
stuck on the handlebars. I have used drops pretty much my whole life but did
have a MB-1 equipped with Nitto Bullmoose bars and have used the Albatross bars
awhile ago and liked them. While this will be my only bike the allure of the
comfy Albatross is pulling me that way. It seems like I will still have a few
hand positions with them too. On the other hand I also love the look of drops
and are familiar with them. I do lots of trail riding and some road riding as
well. Will the Albatross be the wrong bars for riding on the road? I am hoping
someone here will say something to sway me one way or the other.

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-20 Thread Evan Spacht

Hi folks,

I was curious if there's anyone driving up from the LA area who would be
willing to let me tag along.
I'd love to join in for this one, but without a car, and limited resources,
it could be difficult getting up there. Has anyone used the Amtrak ?

kindly,
Evan

 Manny,

I've been mostly keeping out of this discussion but will offer my local
 insight here.

I work at Cuesta College, half-way between SLO and Morro Bay. It also
happens to be directly across Highway 1 from El Chorro campground.

I ride to work most days and the campus is right at the Marine
"curtain" between inland and coast influences. From my house in SLO 8
 miles
away I can never predict what the weather will be close to campus. It's a
nice mix of sunny 6:30 mornings or maybe misting fog. This morning it was
foggy all the way to the coast. yesterday it was sunny though foggy on the
 coast.

Summer is foggy most days in Morro Bay. I like the fog for a few miles
but once I get wet and start to cool I appreciate sunshine. Your chances
are good that you will see fog most of the day and night at Morro Strand
campground. You're likely to see sun sometime in the morning at El Chorro.
Chance are you'll see sun even sooner in SLO.

We just hired a new web programmer from Hanford who camped at El Chorro
last week. He said they have lots of primitive campsites that are
first-come-first-served, no reservations. He added that the $1 in quarters
gets you 10 minutes of hot shower water. It's a county park staffed by
county rangers who close up about 5pm.

IF the Hostel were still an alternative I'll try to think of a place
you might be able to store bikes for the night but none come immediately
 to
mind. The Hostel is about 200 feet down a small hill from the train
station. Doug, bike parking appears to be in a rack along the Hostel
driveway entrance. I'll try to stop by after work and ask about bike
 parking and maybe take pictures.

If you're planning on riding toward the coast I'd recommend gloves,
wool, and some sort of beanie.

There is much to do for everyone but little time ;) Cheers, Mitch

Re: [RBW] Re: New to Albas after drops/staches...did this happen to you?

Yes Matt ! That's why the original Stumpjumpers were not very pleasant at
all to ride , especially on the road. No handed riding was a "high risk"
adventure ! Ahahahahaahah :)

The BB design was cool though , that you could literally run even narrow
road cranks of the day with it if you wanted. Never tried it, but there was
lots of clearance there as the chainstays came straight out of the BB .

have very slack seat tube angles, steeper than the standard 71 and upward
 range.

I wonder what the muscular use/power output relationship is to saddle
setback (ie, behind crank axle) as well as of bend at the hips -- ie, if
you have two discrete and separate factors, namely hip behind crank axle
and bend at hip, and what the effect of each separately is?

Hi Jay,
Yes, you can just take off the outer ring. The chain ring bolts will
probably need to be changed to single, or you can use spacers (i.e.,
washers).

My tolerance weakness is overheating. When I did my Northern Tier cross
country tour, the first week or so I wore padded shorts fearing accumulated
abrasion. They were fine, if odd on the Pac Coast and mountains. When I
came into the hot northern plains the padding seemed to add to the heat
effect. A couple hours in and my shorts were soaked.

Dropping the pads in favor of unpadded looser fitting light weight
shorts kept me cooler and did not lead to any extreme abrasion.

By the time I reached the Black Hills I tossed the padded shorts and bought
a couple pair of running shorts which (just barely) held up through to
Boston.

Right, to look at an '80s stumpjumper side on, it appears to have about
0cm of drop... I'm sure it's more like ~4cm really which is more typical
for 26" wheeled bikes, but combined with the fact that it has 46cm
chainstays, it looks darn near zero. The angle of incidence btw
chainstay/ST is certainly none too acute despite the 70deg ST angle.

KOPS is something I totally disregard, place your saddle where it feels
comfortable. In the end I stopped using the Alba's because the position
 was
too upright and I wanted a slightly more aggressive position. The Alba's
are going on the wife's Betty Foy if it ever arrives, so they weren't a

[RBW] Re: DIY 40-26 questions

2013-06-20 Thread Matt Beebe
Definitely do it.Setting the limit screw works just fine, and you can
get used to any nuances it introduces to shifting. I have been using
the Riv bash guard crank on all my bikes for years now and love it.For
a while it was just the "quickbeam crank" and I would just run the stock
40/32 until the aluminum rings needed replacing. I never use the big
ring on triples either, and on my touring rig I don't even need a 40t ring,
I get by with a 36.I can't hit all 8 cogs with both chainrings though;
certainly not with the granny anyway- the chain would not be psyched on
the outer cogs.

[RBW] Re: shifting a 9 speed cassette with a 7 speed barcon?

2013-06-20 Thread bobish
If Joe has diagnosed the problem correctly (and I've seen this happen countless
times with these shifters, so it's quite possible it's the case here as well),
then see below.

Tim, these are directions I've posted elsewhere to walk people through the same
issue you appear to be experiencing.
This is from my experience. Note that these instructions assume you have the
common "top normal" type of RD. If "low normal," reverse the HIGH & LOW in the
following.

Once you incorrectly install and subsequently attempt to operate the improperly
assembled barcon shifter, you've got to get back to point A. Shimano's
directions for installation of new barcons even instruct the user to not
operate or fiddle with the assembly prior to new installation. Unfortunately,
those same instructions don't describe what exactly will happen if you do
fiddle with them or the procedure to correct.

To restore the lever range and indexing action, you use the "lever boss cover"
as a *key* to wind the lever back to its original position. Merely rotating the
lever boss cover to its correct position won't necessarily correct the problem.

>From recollection, here's how I have done this:
1. Remove or disconnect cable
2. Remove the lever and boss cover from shifter body
3. Install boss cover in correct orientation
4. Put lever in place on stud or "axle", but in the LOW position; that is, with
the lever nearly parallel to the ground.
5. With either the screw in place or with your thumb & finger securely holding
the lever against the boss cover, shift the lever to the HIGH position.
6. Repeat this action, if necessary, until the mechanism is restored to its
original position. You'll know this when it won't rotate with gentle force.
7. Install the lever in the HIGH position and secure mounting screw. You should
now be able to operate the barcon through the full range of indexing detents.
8. Re-install cable and adjust tension as necessary.

Hope this helps.

Re: [RBW] Re: DIY 40-26 questions

2013-06-20 Thread bobish
Jay,

Don't get me wrong. Most of my bikes have come to me used or set up a certain
way and I'm too cheap/lazy to change out the cranks. A 45 middle is a bit high
but it's on garage find trek that came to me with a half step plus granny set
up and I'm just dealing with it for now. If I were going from scratch, the
40/26 would be perfect on that bike. Where I ride, I have some very steep hills
where I need the small ring but the hills are fairly short (usually from a few
hundred feet to a mile or so). That explains why I'm in the middle 90% of the
time. That and the fact that I'm a lightweight and rarely carry much on the
bike. Certainly for a mountainous climb with a loaded bike I'd use the small
ring a lot more.

Perry

I can't explain the details well (or at all), but it sounds like you have
the base the shifter mounts to in the wrong orientation. Try remounting
with the little nubby part on the base in a different spot.

[RBW] shifting a 9 speed cassette with a 7 speed barcon?

2013-06-20 Thread Philip Williamson
I just put a Suntour Cyclone derailleur and a 9 speed cluster on my Gravel
Roadster, which had been a singlespeed.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/philipwilliamson/9089710197/

I'm trying to shift it with a Shimano 7 speed barcon, and I'm only getting
6 speeds out of it in friction. Is there a modification (I have a dremel
and very little natural fear - is there a tab I can cut off?) I can do, or
should I swap in the front shifter? The front has a lot of range, and it's
redundant, since I'm shifting the front chainrings with a stick right now.
Do I need to get a 9 speed shifter on there? Everything I see in a cursory
search is people trying to shift fewer cogs with a wider range shifter.
("how is that even challenging?")

I'm using a Suntour bar-end shifter on my mountain bike's 9 speed cluster
pretty successfully, which is why I thought this experiment might work.
