If you are comfortable on the saddle leave it like it is. It looks like you
have the stem pretty high already, if sitting straight upright is what
works best for you, and it very well may be, then you will need a shorter
stem or different bars.
However, before you do any of that play around with handlebar height and
angle, it might surprise you. I would angle the bars down slightly so your
wrists are more natural and drop the stem a little. This will make you lean
forward a little. Your mind may want to be bolt upright while your body
actually wants to lean forward. The beauty of the quill stem is it is easy
and costs nothing to find out.

[RBW] Re: My New Sam

2013-07-20 Thread Tom Virgil
djbardwel,

That is just one sweet build of a Samuel Hillborne. And I know it rides
even better than it looks. Love those Albas. My deal with wife is if I
get X, she gets 1-2X. Keep the woman happy.

Current state of my two month old Sam is On Torrey Pines State
Beach.

Reid,

This Rivendell box art is something. It's not the first mention I have
seen on this group, but it comes up from time to time. The Rivendell folks
seem to put a personal signature on their bicycle cartons (which I found to
be very good).

I originally thought I got a rendition of the "Last Homely House". That
was delusional. I do have a rendition of some structure on a palisade or
some kind of huge tree trunk with a tent on its sod roof.

Rivendell Box

Who does this? They put some effort into this. I am also wondering if
Samuel Hillborne is a cat.

Best Regards,

Tom

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-07-20 Thread dougP
Next weekend is coming fast. I'm off the radar after Tuesday night so
contact me off-list for cell phone number. That will be the ONLY way to
reach me. I'm gone early Wed AM & am rarely interested in dealing with the
computer away from the comfort of my cave. The information below is still
valid. I will be at El Chorro site Bishop 9 on Saturday & Sunday. That'll
be my first stop on Friday to see if I can grab another night but otherwise
it's Morro Bay SP (a pretty nice place too).

It would be handy if people would post an ETA (remember, the "E" is for
estimate; not a promise) so we all know who to look for & when. Also, an
exchange of cell numbers can facilitate coordination.

Gotta go out & stick on the low riders & gather the gear. Adventure awaits.

[RBW] Slightly OT: Motorcycle Riding and Bicycles

2013-07-20 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I know there are a few motorcycle riders out there... I'm curious what kind
of motorcycles do bicycle people ride? I'm fairly new to motorcycling
(within the last 2 years), and I honestly can say I got interested in
motorcycling because of my appreciation of bicycling (and therefore all
things two-wheeled).

So forgive me for introducing motorized 2-wheelers into this forum, but I
think there are definite parallels between bicycling and motorcycling.

My favorite bike in my stable is my Bombadil (with front and rear racks and
Bullmoose bars, lights, and a saddle bag). This is a go-anywhere, do
anything (albeit at-a-slower-pace) kind of bike. I also have a 1986
Schwinn Cimmaron set up pretty much the same way as my Bomba... And I also
have other bikes for different purposes; a SimpleOne that's purely for
pedaling, mostly around town, a StumpJumper or 2, Rockhopper, (Dutch)
Gazelle, Raleigh Olympian, Nishiki Prestige... mostly lugged, Rivish-style
setups.) So my taste in bicycles tends to gravitate towards well-made,
practical and utlitarian bikes with a certain proven (and respected)
history.

As for motorcycles, my tastes run similar. I have two motorcycles, both
BMWs. The first is an older 1977 R60/7 Airhead, which is just a beautiful,
classic bike. When I ride it through New Hope PA, which on a typical
Sunday is overpopulated with Harleys, I get all kinds of looks and smiles.
My other bike is a 1993 K1100LT, which I like to think of as a "Riv-ish"
workhorse of a touring bike... It's a go-anywhere bike with plenty of
storage to haul enough gear for a 1-2-week getaway. It's equally
comfortable on back roads or highways, and its upright position gives you a
great command of the road ahead. It's a real pleasure to ride, and its
exactly what I would expect the perfect touring motorcycle to be.

Best thing about these bikes is that there are lots of them out there on
the used market for less money than many of us pay for bicycles, and these
classic motorcycles will (like our Rivendells) likely outlive us... I like
that...

So what are YOU riding?

Peace,
BB

Re: [RBW] Slightly OT: Motorcycle Riding and Bicycles

2013-07-20 Thread BSWP
I ride a 2000 BMW GS 1150, and before that rode a 1987 BMW R80. Are they
Riv-ish motos? Maybe, sort of, but don;t obsess on that. Bicycling and
motorcycling are entirely different, share much of the same qualities, and
utterly complement each other. Leaning into turns, looking through the
turn, knowing which brake to use, on and on... doing both makes you
appreciate doing each on its own, all the more. Like today, when I rode the
LongLow from Berkeley out to Walnut Creek to see an old friend, get some
bits at RBW, and ride back. Claremont and Fish Ranch, in both directions...

2013-07-20 Thread Eunice Chang
Hi-

You don't know me, but I'm Seth's partner Eunice. I have debated sending
this, because I'm not really a Riv owner but thought you all might want to
know.

The bike he rode when he was killed was his Romulus. I don't know where it
is, but it's probably being held for evidence.

The other Riv bike he had, the Hilsen, was displayed prominently at his
memorial service.

I also wanted to thank you for your condolences.

[RBW] Re: Rich-built wheels

2013-07-20 Thread Jim
I'm one of those guys too, current weight is 285 (height is 6'8", partially
the reason). And my preferred riding takes me on lots of unpaved trails
and transitions on and off them from pavement. I'm used to popping spokes
on a regular basis when I miss getting off the seat on particularly bad
bumps, or when I stand up to go up a short but steep grade. But I got a
set of Rich-built Velocity cliffhangers, and I haven't even managed to
knock them out of true to any noticeable degree. I'm a fan.

Yes, Jim Thill is a pretty adept wheel builder himself. I don't know how
many wheels he's built but it's a lot. I've got two sets that he built and
they just keep rolling with no troubles. Technically I built one of those
four wheels under Jim's supervision but Jim kindly "tweaked" things a bit
when I was done.

Of course, Jim happens to be my local wheel building "guru". I have built
one wheel, with Jim's help/close supervision. Might do another one
someday.

Also realize Rich makes great wheels. If I didn't have Jim nearby, would
almost certainly get mine from him.

Wheel building is mystifying to a lot of cyclists, so anybody who's competent
at it can become regarded as a guru of esoteric knowledge. But it's actually a
pretty straightforward process, and not terribly "artisanal", in my opinion.
I've taught dozens of people to build wheels, and most are able to do a pretty
good job the first time (with close supervision). There are probably hundreds
or thousands of competent wheel builders in the US, amateur and professional.
This is not to take anything from Rich, of course.

There is a great section on wheel building in "Ride of My Life." Having watched
Rich build a couple of wheels I think that section really captured some of the
magic that goes into a pro built wheel. I have built my share of wheels over

from Rich, Gravy or Longleaf have provided.

There might be some sections from the bbc documentary based on that book

[RBW] Re: Rich-built wheels

2013-07-20 Thread IanA
I agree that is important to support the artisans and tradesmen, especially
in fields where mass production slowly erode our expectations of quality.
But, what is it about Rich's process that makes a wheel never run out of
true? If a builder is using quality and appropriate components with
correctly calculated spoke length and gradually builds the wheel to create
balanced ideal uniform tension throughout, relying on a tensionometer and
dishing gauge, what is the difference between one builder and another if
discipline in these areas is followed?

I've read of some builders who use some method of securing the spoke nipple
- Blue Loctitie or linseed oil, whereas others might think of this step as
unnecessary, but perhaps this step makes a significant difference in
certain situations (more weight/more aggressive riding style?). Why does
the otherwise accomplished amateur mechanic find wheel building to be any
more intimidating than installing brake levers? If there is mechanical
sympathy, should the wheel build be straightforward enough with the correct
tools.

Re: [RBW] Rich-built wheels

2013-07-20 Thread James Warren
Hearty endorsement here for Rich. LX hubs and Atlas rims for the Hunqapillar.
They are great wheels.

Also Rich was smart about what I wanted and talked me out of the XT hubs,
arguing that the LX's of the generation would not be compromised for weight
savings the way the XT's are.

The wheels have held up well to single-track offroading and touring.

It's it my imagination when I perceive that this bikes rides extra-smooth? In
any event, I love the wheels.

[RBW] FS: Rivved-out Velo Orange Polyvalent MKII 57 cm - cheap (enough) - stripped or as it sits

2013-07-20 Thread cbone97
Selling my first foray toward 650B and general Rivish biking in hopes of
buying a web special Sam Hillborne. I built this up after Christmas with
all the Riv parts being new, save the rack and bag. Everything else was
also new or gently used. This is a great bike, I just came into some 700c
wheels and other stuff I could use to build a Sam.

I live in Columbia MO and can deliver to many MO, So. Illinois, or W. KY
locations at little to no charge. I'll ship however you want, though I
would advise professional packing as I'm inexperienced. Or insure it and
and I'll do my level best and/or to your specs. Ask questions here for
all or contact me off list to discuss purchase / delivery.

I will sell the frame (includes bb, VO headset, brakes, seatpost, cable
stops) and wheels/cassette with both sets of tires for $650 or the whole
enchilada for...hmm, haven't totaled it up but it would be my base price
plus the other stuff at retail minus 25%. I'd also keep most any of the
Riv Stuff and discount accordingly. The frame is in excellent, lightly
used condition. No dings and no scratches worth mentioning that I'm aware
of. PP accepted if you cover charges, or I'll take a USPS money order or
wait for your bank check to clear.

Riv stuff:
Sugino wide/low double crank
Grip King pedals
(1) single Sunrace thumb shifter for rear der
Brooks B67 saddle
Albatross CroMo h'bars
Nitto Tallux 10 cm stem
Tektro FL750 brake levers
chain
Shimano bb
9 speed Shimano cassette
Nitto R15 rack (not installed)
Sackville grid grey large trunksack
pair of Fatty Rumpkin 650B tires, used but lots of good tread left (these
came with the bike and frame, I didn't buy 'em new)
pair of Conti Tour Ride 650Bs, maybe 150 miles from new

Non-Riv parts:
cheap 650B wheels, 36 spoke. This is why I can sell the frame and bike for
what I'm selling it for. Yes, they could be more special, but don't let
the generic-ness put you off. They are strong, true and roll just fine.
VO Grand Cru long setback seatpost
VO Grand Cru MK II cantilever brakes
VO downtube cable stops
VO cabling, orange housing
Shimano Alivio rear der, (there is no front der.)
9 speed Shimano cassette
Surly rear brake cable hanger

Here's a pic. I'm keeping the bottle cages and kickstand. I have a VO
orange tourist bar on it in this pic, but the Albas will be what you get.

I'll be glad to text more, detailed / close ups at your request.

[RBW] Re: Rich-built wheels

2013-07-20 Thread RJM
I have two sets of Rich built wheels for my Sam. One is a 32 hole, LX hub,
650b Synergy rim set that I got second hand, the other is a 36 hole Phil
"Rivy" freewheel hub with 650b Dyad rims that I bought new. Both of these
wheelsets have been top notch. I would have absolutely no issue buying
another set of Rich built wheels.

[RBW] Re: Rich-built wheels

2013-07-20 Thread Garth

There's lots of THE best Wheelbuilders ;-) But most people don't know/care
what a really good wheel is or can be, so they are indiscriminate as to who
they allow build their wheels. Making wheels that "stand" (don't go out of
true) is certainly an art, and as all art no one is "the best". I stopped
making my own wheels long ago. It's not my passion, not my talent, so let
the masters do their thing and I gladly support them :) Joe Young is
another wheel artist .

[RBW] Rich-built wheels

2013-07-20 Thread Tony
A few recent comments from a local club's chatter list answering a
member's, "Any good local wheel builders?" query. ~Tony

Rich Lesnik is reputed to be the best wheel builder around, tho I think he
is too modest to claim that position. He is a member of the club.

Rich Lesnik has the reputation. Wheelbuilding is his specialty and he
seems to be considered a master. He builds dozen(s) of wheels per week --
for starters, he builds all the wheels for Rivendell, whose reputation you
probably know -- so if practice make perfect, he sure gets the practice. He
gets repeated high recommendations on the SF Randonneurs maillist. The rear
wheel he rebuilt for me 3 years ago (old hub, new rim) has gone over 20,000
miles without needing a single re-true. I have used other wheelbuilders
with good reputations, but none have built me a wheel which stays true like
that. At that time, Rich was recommended to me by a particularly large /
heavy (>200lb) / strong GPC member who told me that Rich's wheels can stand
up to *him*.

After I managed to destroy a wheel that a local shop claimed was
"bomb-proof," I called Rich. I was in the final stages of qualifying for
PBP and wanted one less thing to worry about. Rich built me a rear wheel on
an expedited basis so that I could ride my 600k brevet the following week.
This wheel has been with me since 2011 with many thousands of miles, PBP,
and local commuting. I am one of those >200 lb. riders, so when I load up
the bike for a long brevet, the wheels get a workout. The wheel Rich built
has never had an issue, never needed truing, and just keeps rolling.

Very nice!

I keep threatening to get an AHH. However, I live so close to Riv HQ, that
I would just go and pick up the finished bike. But looking at your pics, I
realize that if I did that, I would be missing out on the full Riv
experience. So, the question is: Is it worth paying shipping just to get
the custom decorated box? I'm sooo confused!

[RBW] My New Sam

2013-07-20 Thread djbardwil
Like most of us I would imagine, I keep lookout on the Rivendell site and
am also the happy owner of a Custom and an Atlantis. Both bikes were
local purchases found through eBay and built-up with the assistance and
supply from the great folks at Rivendell.

As of today, I am the proud new owner of my first new (demo) Rivendell - a
48 cm Sam I had the luck of finding on rivbike.com at the moment it was
being posted for sale. First there was a listing with no photo and,
seconds later, the photo appeared and the price was great. Having hemmed
and hawed over a similar 48 cm Hunqa frame months ago and finding it no
longer listed one day, I acted quickly: 1) pleaded with wife; 2) made some
promises; 3) called Riv - spoke with Keven (an awesome fellow - promised it
would be my favorite); 4) made the purchase.

The bike arrived yesterday with the best packing I've ever seen, and the
first shipped bike I've received that was not damaged in any way.
Assembling it was a breeze and interesting to see how the parts were
assembled in the box, zip-tied, bubble wrapped and foam protected - amazing
work. I took my first ride this morning and it was instantly comfortable
with a wonderful upright position everyone here describes as the benefit to
the Albas; the seat is a sprung Brooks Flyer (pre-aged) and the tires are
Fatty Rumpkin 650Bs - smooth and comfortable.

My stable is complete (I promised) - what a great experience!

>From suggestions on this list, I've tried Adiddas Samba Milleniums, and
Vitruvian running shoed. The 1st are a bit narrow for me, while the second

pressure of the pedal (MKS Sylvans) in the center of the shoe. I also use
and like Patagonia Boaris shoes in cooler weather.

In hot weather, I perfer Keen sandals. For short casual rides, the street
sandals. For longer rides, cycling sandals (I remove the steel plate as I
don't use cleats) with stiffer sole.

I like to just use pedals that are shoe-agnostic, rubber block pedals are
good for this. I imagine grip-kings are good too if you don't use pins,
