[RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet

2013-08-12 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Obviously, it is frustrating to not have your bike. Doubly so if it's
sitting somewhere waiting to be painted.

But, if I understand the scenario so far, Rivendell is repairing the frame
for free and is having it repainted. They've also offered a replacement
bike. Is that a loaner until it's back or full-on replacement? (In other
words, a replacement means they are going to eat the cost of the repair
and repaint, plus the cost of the new frame, and try to offset that by
reselling your repaired/repainted frame at some future point.)

That seems like a pretty fair offer, either way.

It does seem like some missed communication - and I wouldn't attempt to
conjecture why there were changes or delays. But, if the rub is Steve Rex
or Bernie Mikkelsen - that's a pretty high class problem. Either way those
are two talented frame builders.

I guess it strikes me that both the person who operates the torch, and the
person who is running the paint process are not Rivendell employees. And
Rivendell is caught between them and you, probably trying to skate that
fine line of putting pressure on the person doing the work while
maintaining a much longer-term relationship with them, while keeping you
happy. They have a few things at their control - the above mentioned
bicycle replacement, for example - and they have no control over most of
it.

Now, I'm certainly not trying to get them off the hook. But, I've been in
that position many times during my stint in retail and didn't always get
the straight story from repair person - a lot of times you end up passing
on the best information you have at the time. Sometimes it's wrong.

It's hard to come to the conclusion that anyone has tried to be deceptive.
Sometimes it's just as hard for them to get the info, too.

Finally, maybe it's the language of your post, but have all of your
communications with Rivendell been my email? I hope you did get them on
the phone for most of the conversation - often it's hard to tell tone or
level of frustration from text alone.

Hopefully your bike will be back in your hands soon.

- Jim

[RBW] Re: updated Rambouillet with improved Tektro 559's

2013-08-12 Thread ascpgh
Nice set up, Max!

I stirred the Tektro caliper and lever idea for a while to open up the
clearances on my Rambouillet for more tire and fender room. In the meantime
I had collected some Continental Gatorskin 700x32 (actually 29mm on
Velocity Synergy rims) tires on clearance from the local REI and a set of
Honjo H27 hammered fenders for an attractive price and after holding one of
the fenders up to my bike with the Contis installed I thought I should do
it to prove I needed the Tektro solution for this combination. Turns out I
didn't need the brakes.

All of that tire and fender fit beneath the Shimano long reach calipers,
even when closing on the rim (thanks to a strategic clearance dimpling
needed on the front only).

Took it for, literally, a shake down ride around town to see if I could
produce some misbehaving. All was well, despite Belgian block roads, gravel
paths, freshly asphalt patched streets, and yes, more curb drops than I
should have on the first ride with a low tail fender like that (go off at
an angle turn the wheel even more parallel to the curb as you drop). The
day's climate was beautiful, or as a friend posted: I won't be noting the
weather when I face Saint Peter, but if I do reach Heaven, I am positive it
will be like last week in PIttsburgh.

[RBW] Re: Any last suggestions before I have to throw my Bleriot in a dumpster?

2013-08-12 Thread justinaugust
I can't spam to this but I have two experiences that are similar.

My first non-Mountain Bike(Giant OCR2) carried me around San Francisco until I
was struck by a car. I had the chain rings dig into my Achilles and was carried
away by an ambance - the bike was fine. As I was recovering my family bought me
a Soma Double Cross (even though the bike was fine, just to be nice). After
recovery I got back on the Giant and did not ride it out of the Lower Haight
ever again. I was so nervous to go near traffic. I got on the Soma and cruised
through Golden Gate Park, the Mission, out to Alemany Farm in Bernal Heights,
downtown to my office, etc. never had a care in the world. I held onto the
Giant frame for 3 years until I moved to Philly and sold it in the moving
process. My mind and body just did not want me on that bike.

--

I purchased a set of Richey Logic cranks off here for the famed low-Q benefits.
Installed them and rode out (on my Bleriot). Knee and lower back pain appeared.
They were 172.5. I have since figured out that my sweet spot is a mid-to-high-Q
factor crank with 165-170 length due for the way my legs and hips are set up.

Keep searching for the fit - and don't try to make some thing/part/theory work
because of what anyone else says. Fit is the most personal part of a bike. All
those little differences add up.

[RBW] Re: Any last suggestions before I have to throw my Bleriot in a dumpster?

2013-08-12 Thread George Schick
Michael, I'm just now reading through the threads of this post. Given your
comparison of crank lengths, pedals, and shoes in the referenced post, have
you tried moving the clipless pedals to the Bleriot and using those shoes
to ride in? Reason I ask that is because I've been shifting around from
platform pedals/plain shoes to SPD pedals/MTB shoes to clipless LOOK-type
pedals/shoes recently in order to try to address a chronic foot pain
problem I've developed in the last 10 years or so. In the process of doing
so (and I haven't ridden a clipless-type of pedal/shoe in about 5+ years or
so) I've found that not only does my pedal stroke improve with feet
attached on clipless, but I can feel my lower back muscles getting more
into the down stroke, as well. With platform pedals I feel like I have the
tendency to slouch more while riding and pedal along like an old fart
(which, of course, I am). I had forgotten about the pedal stroke advantage
of the clipless attached feeling, but have accidentally (maybe
incidentally) rediscovered it. And yes, my lower back is less stiff and
sore after a ride with the clipless pedals. All of this is contra-Grant
for the most part, but it seems to be real.

On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 10:18:52 PM UTC-5, Michael wrote:

OK. Here is a difference I found between the bikes:

Sam and Bleriot have same saddle heights (saddle top-bb center), *but*:
Sam cranks - *170mm*, MKS touring pedals with walking shoe (no back pain)
Bleriot cranks - *172.5mm*, MKS touring pedals with same walking shoe
 (ouch)

Giant cranks - 172.5mm, but have used clipless much, much more than
Touring pedals on it. No pain. Clipless shoe also changes distance to pedal
since the sole/cleat is diferent thickness than walking shoe.

 So:

This makes the saddle top to pedals 2.5mm further on the Bleriot than the
 Sam.
*Would this 2.5mm difference be enough to cause a low back pain problem?*
I rode this way fine for a coupla months when I first got the Bleriot
with no probs. It was after those first months that the back pain started.
Maybe cumulative and the back started complaining and still does?

*Should I drop the saddle 2.5mm?*

Supernova tail light mounting tabs off so it would fit inside the housing,
ran the wire out the back and used a heavy duty 2 part epoxy to attach the
light the the back plate of the housing. after the epoxy cured. I

Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and

considering the silver P55 of the chromoplastic model.

The more I read your comments, the more I am inclined towards going for
the SKS, just... the Gilles Berthoud's are so pretty! If I go with the GB,
it will be the 50mm short variety. Not sure what short entails, but
after having two sets of too-long fenders, I'm opting for short + mudflap
 if necessary.

Hi Steve,

I believe the P50s are meant for 700c bikes, but I sure would love to see
them make a 50mm wide fender for 26 wheels. I went ahead and ordered the
P55.

http://www.sks-germany.com/?l=ena=productr=mudguardsi=6409800121CHROMOPLASTICS

I think I will be needing a massive mudflap after switching to these
relatively shorter fenders to have equivalent splash coverage, so thanks
for that photo. Sounds like a fun DIY project.

[RBW] Bombadil 60cm - Planning to sell

2013-08-12 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Putting this out to the group in advance. I plan to prepare my Bombadil
for sale shortly, which is a double top-tube 60cm in dark green and cream.
I need to sell a few bikes in my stable, and I'm forced to make a tough
choice. I also hope there may be a nice home for it among this group.
Currently it's set up with bullmoose/thumbshifters, but I also have a set
of Noodles with barend shifters that can easily go back on the bike. If
you're potentially interested, kindly contact me offline

drops. No question about it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Big Front Rack loaded on a Hunqapillar... am I crazy?

2013-08-12 Thread Christopher Chen
Shawn:

I just got back from a two-day 120mi/200km ride with a large saddlesack in
the rear (on the rear top rack) and two swift mini short stack panniers on,
plus a basket on the top of the (recently and no longer) discounted big
front rack. This was on the 57cm Hilsen. The weight was distributed roughly
45/55 back/front, probably close to 50lbs/22kg on the racks combined. This
front loading was partly unintentional, because I had a small igloo
cooler in a basket strapped to the big front rack, with eggs, milk, bacon,
and butter, most of which was procured en-route. You really have no idea
how heavy hydrated fat gets. :)

The route was mostly along the Columbia River Gorge, with plenty of
climbing and descents, and a decent amount of wind. Other than the weight,
I found the handling to be admirable, although I think I was at the limit
of what I'd be comfortable putting up on the front end. I'll definitely try
and move more weight to the rear. I say this because my arms are a bit
tired today.

I'll post a more comprehensive report regarding the ride later, when the
pictures are done.

rear for extra clothes, food, water, etc.

You'll have to try different configurations for yourself to find out what
works best for you and your riding style. Some people really notice
differences with just a few pounds of load while others are unfazed by 25
lbs at one end or the other. IME, once I get over 25 lbs it's nice to

Hi, Hugh

I love the drops! Both of my Rivs proudly sport 46 Noodles. I've done the

commuting, off road, pavement, whatever. Noodles are the only pain-free bar
for me, too. Moustache and Albatross bars are both really fun for about
15-20 miles, and then they start to cause pain, at least for me. Noodles
keep me moving around and happy.

Glad you're enjoying that great bike of yours!

Re: [RBW] Love the Drops.

2013-08-12 Thread Curtis McKenzie
Hi Hugh,

A timely post. On Saturday I changed from Noodles to Albatross bars. Did a
300 plus mile tour with the drops and felt something was missing. So...on
went the Albatross bars. First ride using them was yesterday. Did about 40
miles. So far I really like them here is why:

1. More up right. I can see better not only the cars, but the environment
as a whole. At the speed the bike goes I like to look around and see the
sights.
2. My hands seem to fall naturally on the cork grips.
3. Good for climbing hills. I can stand up and really pedal.
4. A wide variety of hand positions; on the cork, just in front over the
brakes, on the tape in front of the cork, or for more areo on the curves
and just to the left and right of the stem.
5. Breaking is more positive for me as well.
6. The nature of my riding changed. I had more fun with the Albs.
Was it riding
something new or the position? Time will tell.

So Hugh, I will be happy to let you ride my Hilsen on the up coming rumble
so you can get a first hand experience.

Peace,

Curtis

2013-08-12 Thread dougP
Hugh:

You've really captured a feeling in your description of you ride. Those
times are truly special.

As to the bars, I've always been comfortable with drops but occasionally
muse on trying an upright bar on my Atlantis. I've tried Moustache bars on
another bike couldn't get used to them. Drops have more hand positions
and allow the rider to sit at various back angles. Mine are high enough
that I'm virtually upright when my hands are on the tops. When headwinds
kick in, drops let the rider hide a bit from the wind.

Off-road is where I think uprights may have a place, especially with
braking. I suspect that aero levers, even with good quality brake cable
housing, lose some force compared to MTB brake levers. Uprights also seem
to fall into the 55-60 cm range in width, providing greater leverage than
even wide drops.

[RBW] Re: Love the Drops.

2013-08-12 Thread Joe K
I have always loved the drops, and almost all my adult bikes have had them.
I guess it's partly because I came to love biking during the '70s bike
boom, and that's how the bikes were set up.

So I got comfortable on those. Then I tried some more-or-less Alba-type
bars (on a nice Schwinn 5-speed) and discovered I really didn't like them.
I suspect the reason has less to do with what I'm used to than that I'm a
pianist, and it bugs me to keep my hands in one place for any period of
time. I need the change of positions, it seems.

Chris,

I can be as impatient as the next fellow, probably more so, but I'd point
out that Rivendell is not in the business of repairing frames. This task
is out of the normal order of things for them, they are at the mercy of two
subcontractors who each have their own pipeline of work and their own
priorities, and they are losing money on the whole deal.

Grant didn't respond personally after your complaint simply because he took
the complaint, flipped it to one of his employees, and told the employee to
take care of you. That process produced results with which you should be,
IMO, happy, and for which you should be, IMO, grateful. It may be a small
company, but Grant probably works 50 or 60 hours a week - or more -- taking
care of everything he normally has to take care of, and at 7:30 at night
when he's been there for eleven hours he wants to go home to his family.
In my experience, folks work longer hours at small companies than at large
ones.

I'm sympathetic to your frustration, I'm sympathetic to your missing your
bike, and I'm sympathetic to your impatience, but I'm not sympathetic to
your complaining about this process, either publicly or directly to
Rivendell. Be grateful. You used to have a $2000 frame (speaking
approximately, and in today's dollars) which ten years later broke and was
then worth next to nothing, and they are going to hand you back a nice,
shiny, new(-ish) $2000 frame. Smile, be grateful, count your blessings.

The used Romulus I recently purchased took. I believe from what the
original owner mentioned, three months to be returned for the same type of
repair. That was a few years ago and of course it had to be shipped to
Canada but when you are dealing with more than one business in order to
complete the frame repair - not to mention the possibility of back logged
orders with the frame builder and or painter. Customer service is more
important today than ever for better or worse - one of the best companies
out there that I have dealt with is SVS that specializes in sub woofers,
as well as Oppo ( blu ray players ). Both are smaller internet companies
and are having to sell products in a very competitive market ( nothing new
there ) but the quality and service keeps them successful. Rivendell is
fortunate to have a specialized product in demand which helps and yes, I
think Grant and his employees do all they reasonably can to help their
customers. I think they could improve their communication which can make
all the difference.

on...I'll add I did a 260 mile tour with about sixty pounds and ran
panniers in the back low-riders up front with a basket. What I found was
that the handling suffered with the basket load (even 5 lbs) especially on
low speed hill climbs. I suffered in my arms shoulder blades with the
constant micro-adjustments I had to make, which sounds like what
Christopher experienced.

On a recent mini-tour I left the basket behind and kept the panniers on
front back and reduced the load to about 32 lbs total gear plus pannier
weight and my Hilsen handled really well. My caveat though is you have a
Hungapillar which is stouter than a Hilsen so your max load could be higher
and handle really well. Also Doug has a mid-trail (not trying to make this
another mid/low trail discussion) fork and his front end handling may be
slightly different than your's. I plan on increasing the load in the future
to see the difference.

I'll be interested what you do with feedback.

Best,

~Hugh

I am selling a black Pass and Stow Porteur rack and the matched Freight

light mount and is black. Bag is Navy blue/yellow accents/yellow interior.
The rack was made to easily fit a smaller bike (my Atlantis is a 52cm0. It
is pretty adjustable. I am just not a porteur kind of guy.

I would like $225 with free shipping to CONUS. This is less than the rack
itself would cost without the six week wait for either.

10Mitch?

So I have a confirmed 8 counting Jim in as I think he was in but might
drive down later. I haven't heard whether Estaban was a confirmed
participant also I haven't heard back from Mitch as he lives the furthest
SLO and said he wasn't setup for camping.

Also, Doug said he had three friends that were interested but was holding
off to see how many confirmed we ended up with. The site capacity is for 8
but since we won't have any auto's we can probably get away with now I'm
guessing here 12 that's an additional 4. As a bail out plan I suppose the
worst case scenario would be to take a motel in SC? I just checked there
are 10 sites currently available perhaps you could book one then were good
for 16 campers. It will cost $43 for the night. Go to

If only I had a longer arms, and didn't have as much of a reach (with even

I dig the the Noodles, but I guess the Albas provided a more comfortable

2013-08-12 Thread James Warren

Hugh,
Thank you so much for organizing this. The following is the source of my
ambiguity, quoted from my school district's start-up meeting calendar:

Friday, August 23, we will be meeting at Peninsula High School for our 9-12
District Professional Development Day starting at 8:00AM. Around 3PM, PV and
Pen staff will be having a kick-off mixer (more info to come).

What this means is that I have no idea when I can join you all for the ride.
Even if I don't go to the mixer, if I'm not free until 3, I'm screwed with So.
Cal Friday traffic. I figure I'll be joining the ride Saturday morning. So I
will not insist on dibs on camping room.

I appreciate the offer however the differential between my Hilsen 58 cm and
your 67cm Hilsen probably wouldn't be the most effective trial geometry.
I'd have to plant my magic bean just to mount your bike friendly giant. I

Of course it's all based on individual need and I'm sure I'll love a

 Hi Hugh,

A timely post. On Saturday I changed from Noodles to Albatross bars. Did
a 300 plus mile tour with the drops and felt something was missing. So...on
went the Albatross bars. First ride using them was yesterday. Did about 40
miles. So far I really like them here is why:

 1. More up right. I can see better not only the cars, but the
environment as a whole. At the speed the bike goes I like to look around
 and see the sights.
Was
it riding something new or the position? Time will tell.

So Hugh, I will be happy to let you ride my Hilsen on the up coming rumble
so you can get a first hand experience.

 Peace,

 Curtis

commuting, off road, pavement, whatever. Noodles are the only pain-free bar

15-20 miles, and then they start to cause pain, at least for me. Noodles

Albas and M-bars are great, but lack that extra position in the drops
that I find necessary on longer rides (3 hrs). Yes there are multiple
hand positions on those bars, but they're on the same plane, so my
arm, neck and shoulder muscles don't get enough change in the ride to
be most comfortable. I don't ride in the drops that much, but having
them as an option is quite helpful.

So I have a confirmed 8 counting Jim in as I think he was in but might
drive down later. I haven't heard whether Estaban was a confirmed
participant also I haven't heard back from Mitch as he lives the
 furthest
SLO and said he wasn't setup for camping.

Also, Doug said he had three friends that were interested but was
 holding
off to see how many confirmed we ended up with. The site capacity is for
 8
but since we won't have any auto's we can probably get away with now I'm
guessing here 12 that's an additional 4. As a bail out plan I suppose
 the
worst case scenario would be to take a motel in SC? I just checked there
are 10 sites currently available perhaps you could book one then were
 good
for 16 campers. It will cost $43 for the night. Go to

Your friends and Doug's are covered.

far so good for the new bars.

Photos to prove it.

[RBW] Pictures from the Panther Creek Falls Gran Carbo s480

2013-08-12 Thread Christopher Chen
Hello!

Last weekend, 10 folks left Portland for the Columbia River Gorge and
Panther Creek Falls in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The distance
was 60 miles from start to finish each way, roughly:

Portland to Troutdale via Marine Drive, which runs along the Columbia River
past both the Portland and Troutdale airports.

Troutdale to Cascade Locks via the Historic Columbia River Highway, which
leads past Crown Point, and multiple waterfalls, the most famous of which
is Multnomah Falls. We were able to travel on the
not-yet-opened-but-substantially-complete section of the Historic Columbia
River Highway Trail east of Cascade Locks

Cascade Locks to Stephenson via the Bridge of The Gods and WA SR-14,
stopping for a brew or two at the Walking Man Brewery in Stephenson.

Stephenson to Panther Creek Falls Campground via WA SR-14, Wind River Rd,
and Old State Rd (USFS 65).

The campground is relatively spacious, with vault toilets and at least two
well pumps. Panther Creek flows right by, and there were small bathing
pools laid out in river rock.

The next morning we enjoyed a waffle and bacon breakfast prepared by myself
with the assistance of my Sous Chef, Maria. Fortified, we climbed up and
gained a fair amount of elevation the next 3 miles on USFS 65 to see the
actual Panther Creek Falls, which are spectacular.

The ride back was rather uneventful, and went rather easily, with a net
elevation loss. Wait, that's not totally true--there were delicious burgers
in Cascade Locks at the Char Burger, along with Malt Shakes.

The ride ended at Velo Cult in Portland, where beers and chess were enjoyed
well into the evening.

Technical notes: There is no way I'm carrying waffle kit on anything
farther than a short range (50km) s24o without bribes again.

Pictures proved it happened:

I just figured out where I want the Riv Jamboree to be: right there,
in Gifford Pinchot.

With WAFFLES and BACON.

I have ridden most of the route described, but without any waffles.
The only bad part (other than that when I rode it, I had no waffles
and bacon) was the damn stairs (pictured) on the bike path.
