[RBW] Morgan Territory to Diablo ride 9/29

2013-09-16 Thread Manuel Acosta
Looking to do a mixed terrain ride from Concord BART through Morgan
Territory and over the backside of DIablo.
This ride is stemming from wanting to see the damage done by the recent
fire on Mt.Diablo and later on hoping to take pictures of the recovery.

Pretty much everything from the new article makes me want to do this ride.
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Wildlife-winners-losers-in-Mt-Diablo-fire-4807527.php

Going into unknown territory (pun intended) but what I have heard the
backside of Diablo is stupid steep and rutty.

Theres a reason why the backside of Diablo isn't really well ridden but
alas that doesn't matter to me.
Looks to be a tough ride with good amount of elevation with no food to buy
for lunch time.
Which means somewhere in the rumble or maybe the top of somewhere there
will be some communal food sharing.

Again pretty sure this counts as a hard ride. Maybe. I don't know
Here's the proposed route for those that are interested.
http://goo.gl/maps/vpqa2

Proposed time would 830amish. To beat the heat.

[RBW] Re: Practical Racing

2013-09-16 Thread Manuel Acosta
Pat,
Practical racing is what I do everyday!
When I ride into spiderwebs I sometimes pretend I'm apart of some invisible
race that I just won.
So instead of getting mad, I practice my winning pose as I cross that "race
tape".

Good times always.

Re: [RBW] Re: Practical Racing

2013-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Fun topic. With me, whether I win or lose depends on whether I have fenders
installed. If I don't, I lose -- guaranteed. Pedaling furiously, I manage
to get far enough from home and into an area where there is no shelter, and
have to plod away wetly thereafter until I reach my destination.

Funny: after a very wet July (we've been in 3 or so years of "severe"
drought") the sun came out for three weeks, so I concluded, "Monsoon over"
and removed the fenders from Ram and "03. Sho' 'nuff, immediately, a week
of record-breaking rain. So, Sat, put the fenders back on the '03. Sho'
'nuff, it's been sunny since.

40-somethings on the bike path" Moore, gasping for air in ABQ, NM.

2013-09-16 Thread Garth

Nice Patrick

I've done it many a time here in O-Hyo .Ho hum such a beautiful
day at the start not a cloud in the sky, nothing on the radar. An
hour or so later as some clouds gently roll in . hark I hear
what ? Thunder of course ? Where am I ? In a small, narrow valley 14
miles from home . There is a gas station 3 miles away but oh one
mile or so of that is steep uphill ! Oh well there was nowhere to
stay, so I went for it like FAST :) I made it to the gas station and I
was just on the edge of the storm cell. I had a favorable wind in the
direction I needed to go home , so I decided to just go . We .
. . .what a tail wind from the Storm ! A mile or two so later I was back
in Sunshine as the Storm raged on well behind .

Yes Patrick . racing can be fun !! As is the Weather :)

[RBW] Friday Ride on the Columbia River

2013-09-16 Thread Eric Norris
I'll be in Portland, OR, on Friday, with bike in hand and plans to do a ride
along the Columbia River. Anybody interested in joining me, or who has
suggestions for a route (I'll be departing from NW Portland, but I may take
transit towards Troutdale to reduce in-town miles) can contact me off-list.

I plan to leave around noon, and will have lights in case the ride goes a
little long.

[RBW] Re: Minimalist Riding Shoes

2013-09-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Mike, your friend is right -- that's a great site for info.

Eric, my moccasins are made by Bonnie at http://beyondcomfort.com. She made
our family's moccasins a style not on her site, a below the ankle with
laces and tongue. She does an incredible job building up her last to match
the measurements of your feet so your mocs really fit spectacularly. She is
great to work with. There is also http://www.arrowmoc.com, but the leather
is very thick (great for the sole, less so for the upper) and he doesn't
custom fit, so that ruled him out for us.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: SF Randonneurs Fall Populaire Report/Photos

2013-09-16 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Just got the email report from RBA Rob Hawks, who confirmed 95 started and
~50% (by show of hands estimate) were new to brevets. Along the route,
there were at least four riders who got the "elevator pitch" for brevets
from me - only because they had asked and said how much they wanted to try
it.

I think the photos which may really make you homesick are probably going to
come from the Marin Mountains 200K -
http://ridebike.org/sfr/adventure/marin-mountains-200/ - which I believe
Manny will be riding. (Unfortunately, I think I lack the miles and know
I'm committed elsewhere this weekend).

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

[RBW] Re: Minimalist Riding Shoes

2013-09-16 Thread Evan Baird
I've been trying to get a casual cycling shoe made by these folks out in
Mariposa. They make really nice moccasins for hunting and renaissance
faires. I have a pair of the 2 button boots.

http://www.nativearth.net/

I sent a sample pair to Grant Petersen who said they were comfy "but they
look like pot farmer shoes".

Maybe if more people express an interest they'll get serious about making a
shoe that looks like it comes from this millenia.

2013-09-16 Thread Michael Hechmer
I don't usually read ride reports anymore and approaching 69 am not at all
motivated to go past 3 hours, and I don't live in the Bay area (but visit
once or twice a year) but i did read this report; and enjoyed the pictures
too. No doubt a great day. Happy Birthday.

BTW, I'll be spending my birthday, 10/15, stuffed into an airplane bound to
Oakland. I'm hoping to bring my Trek 620, which is being retrofitted with
S&S & 650b. Two weeks in CA. Would be happy to hook up with Rivinistas for
a relaxed fun ride.

[RBW] Re: LA Bump Ride.

2013-09-16 Thread Tom Virgil
Popped this into google maps and selected "bicycle". I had to laugh.
Their selected route on W.Sunset takes you within two blocks of "Laur
el and Hardy" park. Neither you nor Evan tend toward those two characters,
but it struck my funny bone to see it on the map.

Looks like you had a good time with some great vistas.

Here is one I would like to try up there:
http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/sam-merrill-trail-echo-mountain/ Don't let
the 2.7 miles fool you. Looks challenging and has a fascinating history.
Looks like Hunqapiler territory. I picture Rivsters hooting it up on Echo
mountain.

Best regards,

Tom

[RBW] Re: Need life advice? Explore by bike!

Nice! Tilden's great these days for riding. Not too hot and there's just
a little bit more moisture to consolidate the dirt and provide a little
more traction. Looks like you hit some of the trails we'll hit on the NEBMT
in a few
weeks(reminder!).

[RBW] Re: SF Randonneurs Fall Populaire Report/Photos

2013-09-16 Thread William
I was there, and it was a lovely day. It was my longest ride in quite a
while, but I was determined to do it because I have a two-day, 130 mile
adventure this Thursday/Friday. I saw Toshi at the finish, and spotted
several Rivendells. A number of Hilsens, including a super tall orange 2TT
one. On the return through Marin I was passed by a group of touring guys
led by an Atlantis with 'stache bars. I was on my Black Mountain Road
bike, which did great.

Salmoning through the America's Cup crowds was quite a chore, but
fortunately I wasn't in that much of a hurry. Great day out.

Re: [RBW] Re: Now taking a poll for the month of September SoCal Riv Ride Santa Monica

2013-09-16 Thread Bryan
Not sure about the parking situation. I ride to that area from my house
(I'm spoiled). If you're going up Westridge, another option would be to
meet at Peet's at the corner of San Vicente and Gorham in Brentwood. That's
all City of LA street parking around there and might be more forgiving than
Santa Monica. Then you'd ride San Vicente a few blocks west to Burlingame,
to a short descent down Sunset Blvd. to Mandeville Canyon and then up
Westridge. Gets you into the nice stuff pretty quickly. Coming back to your
cars up San Vicente from the PCH is good because there's a great bike lane
on San Vicente.

2013-09-16 Thread EGNolan
Patrick,

Do you or someone you know make the moccasins or do you purchase them? I've
been taking my lunch walks through the park barefoot & enjoy it. I wear
pretty minimal (ish) Teva sandals most days and I'd like to do more similar
walking/riding but can't afford to try too many options for winter.
Moccasins seem like a good way to go, but I haven't located many options...

Best,

Re: [RBW] How much fits in a Baggins Boxy Bag?...5.5 lbs of fur!

2013-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks -- another cute photo. I guess I'll just have to beat Nico some more
until he submits to bike riding.

I recall when still married getting a tandem for my then wife and me and
attaching a milk crate onto the back for our two Shi Tzu. They were
certainly more tractable than Nico, but at one point, after several miles,
the female panicked and, thanks to misjudging the length of the restraining
leash, jumped over the side. She hung dangling from her harness while we
both panicked in turn until the bike fell over, almost crushing the dog
(who escaped unscathed) and giving me road rash and bruises.

Re: [RBW] How much fits in a Baggins Boxy Bag?...5.5 lbs of fur!

2013-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I wish I could get my chihuahua to ride on-bike -- it would simplify life a
lot. I tried to get him used to a Timbuktu pet backpack but he absolutely
refused. I guess I'll just have to drag him behind me on a piece of string.

My brother used to carry his part Bassenji (I think -- anyway, a dog
weighing ~20 lb) in a big Wald basket -- she loved it.

In other news: as a boy, I'd sometimes tie our family German Shepherd to
the handlebar with a rope and use his love for the bitch at the Mennonite
missionary school 1/2 mile away to get a 20 mph ride along the coffee
plantation doubletrack. (Getting back home was harder.)

Can anyone else share pet-on-bike photos?

[RBW] Re: Minimalist Riding Shoes

2013-09-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Just moccasins. Come winter. These are for running in the wet cold
(25˚F-45˚F) of Autumn and Spring. THese don't grip a smooth oak pedal like
my barefoot or the leather does.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: LA Bump Ride.

2013-09-16 Thread Evan Spacht
David, walked about 20 feet from the concert venue I was at, and I'll be
darned, I accidentally found Stumptown today.
Weird coincedence. Pictures to prove it
