I don't quite understand the backlash to FS/WTB posts. One lesser (but
significant) reason that I buy stuff from Rivendell with confidence is
because I know that if it doesn't work out, I can sell it on here for a
decent resale value. This encourages trying stuff out, which is inherently
risky via mail order, and eventually gives others good deals for things
they may just not consider at retail prices. All in all, I think this
function promotes more happy riding and less buyer's remorse or nice stuff
collecting dust.

Also, check that the switch is set to HP to pump, and set to X to mount it
in the frame.
In X it locks out the pump and is easier to compress into the frame. It's
ok to put the pump on the peg in HP, but it'll be harder to compress. :)

2014-02-07 Thread Bill Gibson
Tisn't either/or! Do you prefer beer, wine, coffee, tea? That said, the
frame and your ride style determine what you want: Do you want to ride
upright? Do you want to lean into your work? Noodle Bars, Albatross Bars,
Cinelli or generic Maes Bend Bars all offer many hand positions. On the
other hand, many Mountain Bike bars, even with bar ends, seem to offer
fewer and less comfortable positions for long rides, but for muscling
through short rides...

[RBW] Re: Has anyone gone from drops to Albas and regretted it?

2014-02-07 Thread blakcloud
I am not a noodle fan, as I don't like dropped bars. My limited albatross
bar use has me unimpressed. Eflayer makes a good point and suggests giving
the pairs a fair run which I will do but I come from the school of thought
that I should love them right away. I use FSA Metropolis bars on two of my
commuters and put a third set on my son's bike. I loved those bars from the
moment I put them on. I think if the albas don't work out I will try
something similar to the FSA, something like the Jitensha bar or the
MAP/Ahearne bar. The FSA is a 31.8 bar so not good with the Riv.

If you like what you have and I think you should stick with what you like.
Changing bars is a pain.

[RBW] Has anyone gone from drops to Albas and regretted it?

2014-02-07 Thread Peter Pesce
I think it has everything to do with your use of the bike.
For distances I think a drop bar has proven to be pretty good. For a town bike
ridden for fun or in traffic I like the upright posture of bars like albas. In
an ideal world you'd have a bike or two with each.
I had noodles on my Sam for a while. It took me a couples of iterations to
realize it, but eventually I leaned that I just didn't use the bike that way,
so it has albas now and my QB commuter has similar bars. But I ride those bikes
a few miles at a time, sometimes in a suit.
I currently have drops on my un-fendered Soma Double Cross that is my
"exercise" bike.

Experiment and find what works for you.

Mike,

Glad your better.

Don't know when I'll do the Mt Pacifico ride I had thought of doing it at
the end of February as a solo just from Mill Creek Summit out and back if
the Ojai ride falls through. Instead I may doing something out my back
door. I need to get another map of the area you described as it's off my
current map. Please go ahead and figure out what you'd like to do for say
March keeping in mind the RSR in the middle of the month obviously and
we'll see what sticks.. I'm game for the Ojai S240 but I won't do it if
it's just Evan and I that would be better for a small group.

Re: [RBW] Best Rainy footwear/boots

2014-02-07 Thread Joe Broach
Hi Michael,

I'm on my second pair of Oboz Firebrand shoe-ish boots here in Portland. I
wear them under a poncho. They're also my year round hiking boots. For me,
they strike the right balance. While skinny for boots, they're still too
wide for toeclips in my size, so I switch to platform pedals in the rainy
season. The proprietary membrane strikes a nice balance for me and has
never left my feet we on my 5-6 mile commute. A less aggressive sole would
be nice on the bike, but then they wouldn't work as well for hiking.

I've snagged both pair at REI for around $80, where they seem to go on sale
regularly.

Best,

I found that I had them too high for comfort with a B-17. I was scooting
forward to easily on the saddle, I found myself tilting the nose higher and
higher but that led to other problems.

I lowered the stem to approx saddle height and it's just about right. Still
playing with the angle though. Tilted down, but I'm wondering if I should
go flatter.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone gone from drops to Albas and regretted it?

2014-02-07 Thread eflayer
I own 4 bikes. Nearly all of my riding is fast and smooth with my local
club. All 4 had drops, but the grocery getting old Cannondale mt. bike was
not getting ridden very much. So it was time for an experiment and that was
with the Alba. It took quite a bit of fiddling with all of the cockpit
variables to finally get the fit to work for me. It was really challenging
to get the hand positions for the grips and the front curves to work right.
But I am pretty sure the dial is correct now.

One of the surprising variable (for me) was the impossible design of cork
grips. They never fit my hands correctly and the bump on the very end felt
like a bump. I have used normal cork bar tape at the grips and at the front
curves and now I gots me the cruiser I was hoping for.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-02-07 Thread chrisd
I have an early 90s Burley Rumba and the price was right (under $2000),
made in the US. and my wife and I ridden it regularly since then on tours,
centuries, and club rides. Lots of upgrades (Noodles on the front, Dreams
on the back), change to Campy Ergo since the original Shimano STI were
terrible. I use a Brooks seat on the front and the drag brake is heavy but
indestructable. Been running Ruffy Tuffys with no problems. So all in all,
we've gotten our money's worth.

[RBW] Re: Wheelbuilding advice: spoke gauge? symmetrical rim?

2014-02-07 Thread richdpow...@gmail.com
Tim,

I'm a bit late to the party- but I'll add my 2 cents anyway!

The old phil hubs you plan on using are bomb proof. I love how they are
field serviceable with two allen keys. I'm not sure you would ever need to
do so- it is neat that you can. As good or better than any other cassette
in my experience- and I'm 6' over 200 lbs. In a 36 hole version- you are
looking at great wheels regardless of the spoke diameter you select.

I believe there are a few critical factors to consider.

Rim construction- eyelets? Sounds like you have a great rim in mind. Lub
the threads and nipple seats. 650b is going to be a bit stronger than a
700- and maybe a bit less than a 26" model.

# of spokes- 36 is a great count.

Tires size- the larger the tire size the more protected the rim/wheel will
be. I suspect if you are going 650b- you are looking at a chubby tire- and
that is good news for you wheels.

Spoke nipples- brass all the way. Alloy are nice-but generally have limits.

Build quality is #1. If you tension if even on each side- not even between
the sides you will have years of long life with or with out an off-set rim.
Setting spoke heats- aligning the spoke line- stressing the spokes as you
build- so there is not wind-up along the way.

I do like the off-set rims and have had great luck with them on my builds-
for custom frame customers and repairs. Over the years i'v built a lot of
touring wheels- mostly 700c and have had very few issues.

Spoke length I have a Kowa spoke cutter/threader- so I tend to cut my all
close to exact as possible using blanks. I'd error on a bit short than a
bit long by .5 mm or so. The strength is compromised if your too short- at
the extreme end.

Bottom line- quality build-36 spokes db spokes with brass nipples- fatter
tires- you can't go wrong. I can cut your spokes down as well if you only
want to buy one size.

A basic tension meter is a valuable tool for the beginner or advanced
mechanic in my opinion. That ups the quality of the build.

I'm in Iowa- happy to help in any way.(more than 2 cents of an opinion!)

Good luck!

pictured on the Cheviot in the Blug is the way they’re coming now, and they
have a whole shipment of them waiting to be sent out into the world for those
who have been eyeing the new version since Bill’s original spotting.

My order is going in right now. (Hmmm, what am I going to spend the $15
necessary to top up to free shipping levels on?)

Three Cheviut shots on the BLUG. First is a Medium (55). Second is a Large
(60). Both the Medium and Large have a rear rack that looks a lot like an
R-14, but there is no tombstone. It's just a flat platform. That might be
better for some saddlebag support configurations. It might be worse if you
want to run a trunksack. Interesting.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone gone from drops to Albas and regretted it?

2014-02-07 Thread Chris Lampe 2
I don't like drops but I went from traditional MTB handlebars with 10
degrees of backsweep to Albatross bars and absolutely hated them. I've
tried them on numerous bikes with different lengths of top-tubes and stems
but nothing matteredI still hated them. Having the grips parallel to
the top-tube is just the most unnatural thing I can imagine on a bike and I
also don't like the pullback. The only place that was comfortable was on
the forward bends which is approximately where they would be on MTB bars.

I spent two years reading Grant's praise for the Albatross bar and those
sentiments seem to be echoed by better than 95% of the people who try them
so I guess I'm just an outlier. The only Riv bar I think I would like is
the Bullmoose and I think I would probably love those. Alas, my bike has 1
1/8" threadless fork (which I actually prefer to quills) and threadless
bullmoose bars are few and far between, not to mention very expensive.

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-02-07 Thread Lynne Fitz
back when my then-riding buddy and I were out riding all the time, friends of
ours upgraded to a Santana and put their big red Cannondale up for sale. We
looked at each other, thought about it, and he bought it. The first test ride
around the Fairmount loop was equal parts of fun and scary - he was much more
into downhill speed than I ever was. Took us a couple of outings to get used
to it, and each other on the tandem (ride around Hagg Lake). Figuring out how
to stand was fun. Not as easy as you'd think.

Then we took it on a century. Many centuries. Two-day event rides. Seattle
to Portland in a day. We were both strong singles riders, which probably
helped. Much ongoing negotiation on how fast we were going to descend. Much
crabbiness on my part when he didn't call all the bumps on the Burke-Gilman
trail. It was more fun than not fun, but it did take some work.

One fun memory - me calling out the turns through Vancouver BC at the finish of
RSVP, with a whole swarm of pilot fish!

His wife later thanked me for training him how to be a good captain. :-)

[RBW] Re: Has anyone gone from drops to Albas and regretted it?

2014-02-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
I'm similar to Dave at RivBike, in that all my bikes eventually end up with
Noodles. My recently set up town bike, though, has albatross bars, and
it's great thus far. I'm tempted to try it out on my 35 mile hilly commute
to the office, just to see how that works for me. If I had to bet, I think
the longer I am on the bike, the more I'll miss drop bars. So, if it were
me, and if it were my Atlantis, I'd probably gravitate stick with Noodles
more if it is used as a Road/Touring/Brevet bike, and I'd probably like
Albas if it is used more as a townie/wandering/s24o/trail bike.

I went from Noodles to Bosco's on my LHT - Xtracycle and hated them. I
went back to Noodles and haven't looked back. I know they aren't albatross

People like what they like. If you are curious definitely give them a try
but maybe keep the packaging from Riv so that if you hate them you could
sell them to someone who likes them better.

Re: [RBW] Re: Winter Bikepacking tips?

2014-02-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
Update:
What's better than a fatbike? A fatpulk. 18" wide smooth tread with runners
with LCG only. My fatpulk arrives Monday and gets put to use immediately
for a three nighter on Pikes Peak. We had a good -16˚F night and morning
here that I used to test out my gear and while I found a few holes, they
are all filled in now, though I fully expect to find additional holes when
I'm out for real.

So, not a Rivendell, but I'm hoping LCG only gearing counts for something.
I'll be some combination of walking, running, and snowshoeing, so a
triathlete? The plan is to test in in the flat park with kid inside and if
that passes the vertigo test then repeat on the climb to the falls a few
miles from my house. If that passes, then I'm good to test it in the wilds.
If it doesn't, I'm at a total and complete loss as to how to escape and
camp in winter's deep.

[RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-02-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have seen a lot of men spend a lot of futile money trying to get their wives
on a tandem. As others have mentioned, the fit issues are often a real
compromise (at best). Unless you're willing to pony up $5000-plus for a custom,
your odds of finding a tandem that is comfortable for both of you is pretty
slim. You can buy a quality used tandem for a song (from a formerly
enthusiastic husband), and then spend many years and thousands of dollars
trying to get it to fit. If you do that, you'll probably have to let go of your
Rivendell aesthetic sensibilities and open yourself up to some new options for
handlebars, etc.

Tandems are not something you can dive into casually or cheaply and expect good
results. Both husband and wife need to be fully on-board with the idea. If the
stoker/wife is lukewarm on the idea, no amount of enthusiasm from the captain
will make it work.
