Agreed about the Rawland. I was tempted to keep that frame for myself, but I'm
sporting a thicker-than-usual winter pelt this year, and I'm not sure I should
be riding a frame with flexy undersized tubing, haha.

Re: [RBW] Re: Winter Bikepacking tips?

2014-02-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, Ian. My intention is solitude, but that seems harder and harder to
do with each passing year in Colorado. I met a few folks, and tried to stay
upwind of them for their laundry scents! I see elk, coyote, deer, fox,
rabbits, bear, martins, newts, frogs, and every other now and again a
mountain lion. Though on a trip in winter, without intentionally tracking
them, I rarely see much save for tracks.

With abandon,

[RBW] FS - two sets Suntour pedals

2014-02-14 Thread Paul Germain
Please forgive my cross-posting this on another group. I have two well-used,
but decent Suntour pedals from the 1990's. For the price, I will ship both or
either at my expense in Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes. Knock off $5.00 if you
want both. I can take PayPal or a check. Please reply off-list.

A set of Suntour Superbe road quill pedals, some wear to the cages (anodizing,
etc.). Bearings seem good, but could probably use fresh grease. $45.00. See
additional text / info in the Flickr set:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/sets/72157640942525445/

A set of well-used Suntour XC Pro Grease Guard mtn. pedals. They are
serviceable, but the left pedal bearing is a bit rough. No slop or wobble, so
probably could use fresh grease. Each pedal is missing one (of seven) cage
bolts on the back side. Also, there is a cosmetic crack to the left cage at the
rear. (See photos of details.)

Looks like there is a hardware, with which you can use SKS-type stays for metal
fenders.
Here is a blog post by Velocraft, a Japanese bicycle shop:
http://www.c-w-s.sakura.ne.jp/cws02/2014/02/velocraft_3.html
(The article is written in Japanese, but you can get idea from photos.)
So, with these hardware and stays, I guess that you can use QR with metal
fenders.

Regarding posts by Bill and Pudge, I put front fender stays on mid-fork eyelet.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/10667049784/
I didn't do that for safety; larger front rack (not the rack in the photo)
interfered with fender stays, so I had to move stays to somewhere else.

[RBW] Short ride post snowstorm

2014-02-14 Thread WETH
The snow began falling in Maryland on Wednesday evening and by Thursday
mid-day it had accumulated to about 12 inches. Thursday afternoon and
evening brought light rain, sleet and a bit more snow. The temperature
dropped overnight, and this morning we had an icy mess. However, by 1pm
the temperature had climbed to about 50 degrees, and the melting began. I
do have bikes with fenders, so off I rode into a beautiful and slightly
surreal landscape. The air temperature felt like spring, but the landscape
looked like winter. I encountered many runners forced into the street by
unshoveled sidewalks. However, I was the only cyclist I encountered during
the hour. Most streets were plowed, but some only one lane wide. Many
intersections were still slush covered. Riding on Big Apples I navigated
carefully and without incident through the slush.
The photo of my bike was taken in front of a snow pile the plow trucks
deposited in front of a road crossing for a hiker/biker trail. That will
take a while to melt. The forecast is for more light snow tonight and
colder temperatures tomorrowspring can't be too far away, right?

bikes and swapped in the parking area just to see how each one felt. I
found the Rawlnad to be much stiffer and slower responding compared to
the Road and slightly more so than my Rambouilet or Saluki (Which pretty
much have the same tubing) . I much prefer my road. Vikki however,
thoroughly loves her bike, so obviously what one rider loves another
 might not.

[RBW] Re: Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions

2014-02-14 Thread Tom Wyland
I keep mine lashed to my R-14 Rack. I short pieces of 1/2 wide nylon
strap that are zip-tied closed. So the zip ties are just attached to the
strap and not to the leather. This gives me security but seems to be
easier on the leather.

I carry a commuting load that is some clothes, lunch, coffee and a laptop.
I've used to to transport groceries. It's big enough to carry a couple
of grocery bags worth, but it's the wrong shape unless you unload them from
the grocery bag. It also fits two flat boxes of a dozen dunkin donuts each.

Another thing is that I've had it in some pretty extreme downpours and the
inside has stayed dry. I would not leave it out in the rain, however, if I
was camping.

I grind whole beans right before adding them into the aeropress.

I also reuse my filter for the aeropress about 3 or 4 times before throwing in

Re: [RBW] Re: Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions

Deekun P,

I have always lashed my Saddlesack large. I've always done it with
zipties, but I am noticing that I've severely pulled the double-slots out
of shape. The Saddlesack Large is not currently on any bike.

I run the Saddlesack Medium on the Windsor. The rack didn't line up quite
right with the slots, so I elected to do a strap solution. I have REI
webbbing straps in all lengths for generic lashing opportunities. I
selected the very shortest ones, which are probably 16 long. They are
brown, and have just a feedthrough plastic buckle.

To thread them through, I pushed a spare spoke into a slot and popped it
out the other side. I used the elbow end of the spoke to catch a loop of
twine. Pull out the spoke and now twine is threaded through. Feed the
webbing through the loop of twine and pull out the twine. Now the strap is
threaded through.

This lashing solution is working great, and I'm certain I'll replicated it
for the Saddlesack Large, next time I load that up. I may use webbing with
a fastek buckle for quick release and quick reattachment.

To thread them through, I pushed a spare spoke into a slot and popped it

 Hugh,

Thanks, but I do realize my little storm pales in comparison to Patrick's

 south with all the ice.

As a young man I truly loved all four distinct seasons. Now, as a less
young man I wonder how much I would really miss snow and below freezing
temperatures. Your SoCal photos look mighty inviting this time of year. I
sure am looking forward to spring. In addition, I will be shopping all the
clearance sales for winter gear to be better prepared next winter.

[RBW] Re: A Bike for Valentines Day!

2014-02-14 Thread dougP
If you two are that different in height, your bike may be too much reach
for her to be comfortable, even with the seat lowered. A local Riv rider
with a bike that's a better fit is ideal as that person is a
dis-interested third party (hardy-har-har) who can vouch for the joys of
the ride. The brother in SF deserves a visit, no?

Or find a local Riv-lady with comparable PBH who could let her test ride
 their bike.

[RBW] Re: Best Rainy footwear/boots

2014-02-14 Thread Tony
No, but I used to use the Pro-route spats. They look a little more vented
than the Duxback. Those go with the cape with the hood and might be a good
combination elsewhere, but in my area the Pro-route line handles even the
worst rainy weather. I actually bought the Carradice cape from RBW before
they carried their own brand. I haven't worn out the cape, but I like shin
shields and splats better than the Carradice spats. Oh, I'm sorry did I
spit?

After 45 Maryland winters, I've had enough.
I was recently texting my brother in law, who lives in SF, and it went
something like this:

Me: Jeff, you gotta help me convince Eva [my wife] that we should to move to
California near you guys. I've had it with Maryland winters!.

Jeff: Are you serious?.

Me: Yes..

Jeff: She's been telling us to move to Maryland!.
