Agreed about the Rawland. I was tempted to keep that frame for myself, but I'm sporting a thicker-than-usual winter pelt this year, and I'm not sure I should be riding a frame with flexy undersized tubing, haha. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Winter Bikepacking tips?
Thanks, Ian. My intention is solitude, but that seems harder and harder to do with each passing year in Colorado. I met a few folks, and tried to stay upwind of them for their laundry scents! I see elk, coyote, deer, fox, rabbits, bear, martins, newts, frogs, and every other now and again a mountain lion. Though on a trip in winter, without intentionally tracking them, I rarely see much save for tracks. Looks like there is a hardware, with which you can use SKS-type stays for metal fenders. Here is a blog post by Velocraft, a Japanese bicycle shop: http://www.c-w-s.sakura.ne.jp/cws02/2014/02/velocraft_3.html (The article is written in Japanese, but you can get idea from photos.) So, with these hardware and stays, I guess that you can use QR with metal fenders. Regarding posts by Bill and Pudge, I put front fender stays on mid-fork eyelet. http://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/10667049784/ I didn't do that for safety; larger front rack (not the rack in the photo) interfered with fender stays, so I had to move stays to somewhere else. [RBW] Short ride post snowstorm
The snow began falling in Maryland on Wednesday evening and by Thursday mid-day it had accumulated to about 12 inches. Thursday afternoon and evening brought light rain, sleet and a bit more snow. The temperature dropped overnight, and this morning we had an icy mess. However, by 1pm the temperature had climbed to about 50 degrees, and the melting began. I do have bikes with fenders, so off I rode into a beautiful and slightly surreal landscape. The air temperature felt like spring, but the landscape looked like winter. I encountered many runners forced into the street by unshoveled sidewalks. However, I was the only cyclist I encountered during the hour. Most streets were plowed, but some only one lane wide. Many intersections were still slush covered. Riding on Big Apples I navigated carefully and without incident through the slush. The photo of my bike was taken in front of a snow pile the plow trucks deposited in front of a road crossing for a hiker/biker trail. That will take a while to melt. The forecast is for more light snow tonight and colder temperatures tomorrowspring can't be too far away, right? http://www.flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157640981555075/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions
I keep mine lashed to my R-14 Rack. I short pieces of 1/2 wide nylon strap that are zip-tied closed. So the zip ties are just attached to the strap and not to the leather. This gives me security but seems to be easier on the leather. I carry a commuting load that is some clothes, lunch, coffee and a laptop. I've used to to transport groceries. It's big enough to carry a couple of grocery bags worth, but it's the wrong shape unless you unload them from the grocery bag. It also fits two flat boxes of a dozen dunkin donuts each. Another thing is that I've had it in some pretty extreme downpours and the inside has stayed dry. I would not leave it out in the rain, however, if I was camping. [RBW] Dallas/Fort Worth Rivendell bike owners: I want to see some Rivendell bikes.
I'm thinking of getting a Rivendell bike but would like to see one (or several) first. I enjoyed reading Just Ride and I like what I see online but would like to see a few examples in the steel before I lay down any cold hard cash. I'm probably looking at the Roadeo model, as I don't see myself ever doing any real touring. Anyone in the DFW area can simple email me and we can talk about getting together. [RBW] Re: aghast by Rivendells aeropressing technique.
the aeropress makes any coffee taste good. got one for my birthday last year and haven't used anything since. the only problem is, in my experience, it uses much more coffee than I would normally use for pour over. but taste is everything, makes cheap coffee taste like expensive coffee so in the end it's worth it. Forgot to mention those used coffee grounds are great for composting and flower beds. I also reuse my filter for the aeropress about 3 or 4 times before throwing in compost pile. If I go beyond that I have had the filter fail and dump grounds into cup then I have to get my tea strainer to filter them out. I have also been using an aeropress for about a year now really like it. I grind whole beans right before adding them into the aeropress. Some mornings smelling the aroma of fresh ground beans is almost as good as the coffee, but not quite. For me the wonderful aroma does add to the enjoyment. I need to get it together and try riding out somewhere to brew some coffee on the trail like I have read of some of you folks have done. Re: [RBW] Re: Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions
Deekun P, I have always lashed my Saddlesack large. I've always done it with zipties, but I am noticing that I've severely pulled the double-slots out of shape. The Saddlesack Large is not currently on any bike. I run the Saddlesack Medium on the Windsor. The rack didn't line up quite right with the slots, so I elected to do a strap solution. I have REI webbbing straps in all lengths for generic lashing opportunities. I selected the very shortest ones, which are probably 16 long. They are brown, and have just a feedthrough plastic buckle. To thread them through, I pushed a spare spoke into a slot and popped it out the other side. I used the elbow end of the spoke to catch a loop of twine. Pull out the spoke and now twine is threaded through. Feed the webbing through the loop of twine and pull out the twine. Now the strap is threaded through. This lashing solution is working great, and I'm certain I'll replicated it for the Saddlesack Large, next time I load that up. I may use webbing with a fastek buckle for quick release and quick reattachment. On Sunday, May 12, 2013 3:53:25 PM UTC-7, Deacon Patrick wrote: Any reason to use leather rather than Irish straps? [RBW] Re: Dallas/Fort Worth Rivendell bike owners: I want to see some Rivendell bikes.
Hey Will! Having ordered my Hunqapillar sight unseen, let alone ridden, I well understand the apprehension. Have ridden my Hunqapillar for the past two years and am delighted I did and looking back would not have changed a thing about what I ordered. They really are that good. Yes, I talked their ears off and no doubt made the daft from all my questions. All that was simply to help me be comfortable. I could have told them what I want in a 30 minute conversation (or less) and then waited for UPS to arrive and gotten the same thing I got this way. It bears repeating: they really are that good. That said, I hope you do get to see one and ever test ride it to be amazed and that much more antsy waiting for your new bike's arrival. Grin. Michael: You have got to get her onto a Rivendell, somehow. I had the same discussion with my wife. Her ancient aluminum Trek was just fine, nothing wrong with it, why would she want something different, etc, etc. An Atlantis came onto the market she only agreed to check it out to appease me. She did not want the bike. After 10 minutes riding around a parking lot, she came back said (in a low whisper so the seller couldn't hear) I've got to have this bike!. So that's the strategy. Will: While it seems like a gamble to buy a bike, especially a Really Nice Bike, without seeing one, I too can vouch that with Rivendell it works. In '02, I decided to by an Atlantis. When UPS delivered my bike in early '03, I had never even seen any Rivendell live in person. They built the bike, then did minimal dis-assembly to ship it. It took maybe 30-40 minutes for me to get the bike rolling, and within a few miles I knew this was the nicest riding bike I'd ever owned, in decades of riding. The bike now has well over 50,000 miles of happy riding on it. I truly hope you can connect with some local Rivendell owners.
