[RBW] FT 56cm Trek and RB-1

2014-04-12 Thread Jason Leach
I have two bike frames that are slightly taller than I want to ride right
now. A blue Trek 510 that swallows up 700x35c tires with ease and a 1993
red RB-1 with the sloping crown fork. Both are 56cm models. The frames
have plenty of cosmetic beausage but are in excellent condition otherwise.
I would love to trade one, or both frames for something 54cm with 700c
wheel size. A single speed that can take fat rubber and fenders maybe? (to
tide me over until I find 54cm Quickbeam or "custombeam")

 Email offlist with offers
Thanks.

[RBW] fs: TWO pairs of 650b tires!!!

2014-04-12 Thread Eric
Okay so the quest for the "perfect" 650b tire for my Saluki has led me down
a long & expensive path. So in order to raise money for my next pair of
tires I'd like to sell this gaggle!

I have two (2) pairs of 650b tires that I would like to sell as a lot.

Here's the rundown:

1) Schwalbe Marathon GreenGuard HS420 - 650bx42 - Lightly used but in
AMAZING condition!
2) NiftySwifty Wire 650B x 33.5 - Just bought them & rode them around the
block!

One pair is too narror for my tastes, the other is too "ballon-ish" for my
tastes. $100 shipped. Photos upon request

For me they are just the right width in the curves. Width is similar to the
Albatross, but they curve down a wee bit and don't come back as much
(likely for knee clearance since they come down). And the curves are deeper
than the Albatross.

This may help you size them (comparison with the Albatross),

Re: [RBW] Re: Now Available: 650B Dyad/Aeroheat in 32h and 36h

2014-04-12 Thread Leslie
Not Aeroheads, but A23's are available in 650b, too.

Rich built my 700c Dyads that are on my canti-Rom; and he built my 650b
Synergy wheelset, since the Dyads in 650b weren't around then. I built an
A23 650b wheelset for my Ram conversion.

I have a spare dynohub, that I've been wanting to build up for the
Bomba... although the Synergy would be a rear, I'm tempted to do the Dyad
in the front...

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar swap question

2014-04-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
I haven't tried the moustache bars so I can't directly answer your
question. A backdoor answer is that I tried the Albatross bars upside down
and as high as I could get them with my stem. They were not comfortable at
all for me. The Albatross below saddle height didn't feel right, but
getting it at or 1" above saddle height and every things perfect so far.

You are right, the Bullmoose and Albatross bars would swap easily. Just
remove shifters/brakes (presuming thumbie shifters) and swap. Your screw on
grips would work for that also.

It's when you cross the threshold between mtn and road that things get more
complicated. For the Albatross conversion I needed to redo the brake and
derailure cables, new brake levers, and switch to bar end shifters, plus I
needed a new stem (I would have anyway because I needed a 3 cm shorter stem
for the Albastaches). That's a LOT more work and I needed time to be sure I
couldn't get the Albatross to work for me before I was willing to go that
route. I am delighted I did!

Whatever end up working for you you'll have some grand times figuring it
out!

[RBW] Re: Handlebar swap question

2014-04-12 Thread dougP
New Bike Day always gets the pulse up.

For clamp-on grips, I've used Ergons & been quite happy with both the ease
of installation / removal and the comfort. As to swapping bars
back'n'forth, you'd need to allow enough cable & housing to handle the
widest bar in your test group. I've been doing a bit of bar fiddling
myself lately and the "hassle factor" I've hit is getting some of the bars
with tighter bends thru the Nitto stem without scratching them up. A stem
with a removable face plate would simplify this. Some set-ups I've fiddled
with should have had different length stems than I had. After always using
drops, I'm exploring upright bars & it's a whole other world, good
for hours of conjecture & entertainment.

I'm about to replace the old Suntour XC front derailleur on my bike because
one of the limit screws is stripped. Obviously that's not ideal, but maybe
there's a way to tap it ? If so, you can have it once It comes off the

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar swap question

2014-04-12 Thread David Stein
Hey Patrick - I have watched that thread. My hesitation there is that I
recently put some moustache bars on an old Trek road bike and wasn't really
into them. Admittedly that was a road bike and not on trails, but riding in
the drops never felt right to me. But I understand that the Albastache has
more shallow drops, and are not very comparable to Moustache?

I'm actually heading to Rivendell HQ today to return something, so will
check it out.

My big question is around understanding the ease of handlebar swaps, if it
is easy enough I may just go bullmoose and albatross and try them both, and
thanks for pointing out on the other drop bars about the diameter, didn't
think of that.

[RBW] WTB - Suntour XC front derailleur

Anyone have a first gen Suntour XC front derailleur (not the XC Sport) for
sale? I have a beautiful unused one I acquired a while back, and now that
I'm finally getting to use it, I see that it's missing a critical cable
stop/guide (that bolts to the clamp)... Not the first time I've bought

Anyway, if you've got one, please email me offline (montclairbo...@gmail.com

[RBW] Re: Handlebar swap question

2014-04-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Congrats on getting so close to getting you're Hunqapillar! Now's the time
when I'd be going really and truly nuts.

For the type of riding you describe, I would not dismiss the Albastache.
Given what I know now (though admittedly I haven't lived with them for more
than 6 hours of riding) I would choose them for the combination of riding
you mentioned. They give amazing control on single track (both climbs and
descents, all with instant access to the brakes presuming you are in the
more aggressive position of the curves). They feel great for multiple hours
in the saddle (I did 4 almost uninterrupted hours yesterday (save for photo
stops) and for me, the curves really feel fantastic the whole time. They
aren't taped yet but no hand issues at all (so much so I decided I do not
need the wool under the tape). The Albastache is a great balance between an
upright bar and a more aggressive bar, and at least for me it is a very
happy meeting place.

I decided against the dirt drop style bars because none I could find had
passed the same mountain standards that Nitto's bars pass. That peace of
mind is huge for me.

Whatever you decide to go with first, understand that the bars you named
fall into two categories: Road and Mtn. So brakes and shifters may change
(I'd go bar end shifters, so you eliminate that for all but the bullmoose).
So you will likely want to stick with testing the other bars that match so
you are doing less swapping.

Do not install the cork grips until you know what you are going to live
with. I had to cut mine off. Once they were gone, I felt a lot of freedom
to try things out, shift bars, etc. If you need something, get cloth tape,
but ride the bars bare while testing.

Can you go by Rivendell again and try the various bars? That would go a
long way toward helping you decide.

With abandon,
Patrick

It's also okay to enjoy the occasional typo (" treads of the bolts"), which

actually have a "right" meaning, and even if none can be found, it just
thinking about it can impart a subtle deeper appreciation for the writing

[RBW] Handlebar swap question

2014-04-12 Thread DS
Hey all - My Hunqapillar is 2-3 weeks away from being built, very exciting.
No got to decide on the build. I'm mostly going with the build kit. But
very undecided on which handlebar setup. So instead of another 'which
handlebar thread' (btw, the recent one with Patrick was very helpful), I
decided I just need to figure out the hard way: by trying them all.

I am undecided between Albatross v. Bulmoose
standard/drops/woodchippers/midge. I like the Albatross, that is what I
rode with the Hunq for a demo ride. But thinking I may want something with
more control for singletrack rides like the bullmoose, or possibly drops
(with the woodchipper and midge as an option there). Not really considering
Albastache or Moustacheas of now. This bike will be used for mixed
rides, mtn biking (fire roads and single track), commuting, errands, road
rides, so basically an 'all rounder'.

My big reservation with handlebar swaps is that the meisha cork grips (part
of the build kit) are glued on, making it difficult to do handlebar swaps.
Am I correct there? So here's my question, if I get a lock-on handlebar
grip, does that eliminate that problem? Is there any reason I could not just
swap
the bars by removing the grips, brakes, and shifters (in this case the paul
thumbies) and sliding the handlebars out the stem and putting in the new
handlebar in the same stem and re-installing the grips/brakes/shifters?
Basically a 10 minute swap? I've never dealt with grips, only drop bars and
tape on my road bike. Any issues with that? Will the cable length be an
issue? Would I want a different stem for different handlebars?

And on that note, any recommendations on a lock-on grip? Was looking at a
brooks one, the ergon one, and plain ole foam ones. Likely I'll put on the
meisha cork grips once I've decided which way to go.

[RBW] FS: Brooks - Team Pro Special and B17 Special

2014-04-12 Thread John Blish
Hi RBW fans,

I am offering 2 new Brooks saddles. Neither has ever been mounted. Both
come with the small silver colored wrench for adjusting the nose bolt and
also with the Brooks saddle cover. They will be shipped in the classic
Brooks box. Both have skived edges and the large copper rivets.

My riding style no longer includes use of these saddles. I am more
comfortable on the B67 with laces in a more upright position with Bosco
bars or on a recumbent. I would like to move them on to someone who can
use them.

It's hard for me to know what is a fair price. I am offering them at $125
each which includes shipping to CONUS by USPS. I will eat the PayPal fees
or you may pay by check.

If my price is too high make me an offer. I will wait about 3 - 4 days to
see whether it sells at my price and then get back to you if it is still
available but it might sell before then.

[RBW] Re: cork grips - shellac vs. spar varnish

2014-04-12 Thread Ron Mc
Thanks, friend. I failed to mention how the varnish instantly highlights
the rings and spalted texture of the cork - IMO, makes it gorgeous.

At San Antonio's Siclovia (cyclovia to everyone else) her cork grips got
more comments than my old Raleigh and our friend's watermelon Nutcase helmet

[RBW] cork grips - shellac vs. spar varnish

2014-04-12 Thread Ron Mc
I come from a bamboo fly rod background, and we used flexible coatings to
turn fibrous materials into tough composites - spar varnish, and maybe as
exotic as mastic varnish on silk thread wraps or to turn an old silk braid
into a floating fly line. When I made my first twine wrap on a bike, it
was natural for me to coat it with spar varnish. Later wraps, found out
shellac is awesome for this application because twine wraps on a bike don't
need to be flexible - twine it, shellac it, and it's good to go and go.
More than 2 coats would also be a mistake.

While I haven't tried shellac on cork grips, its use there doesn't make
sense. Take a soft grippy material and put a hard slick exoskeleton on it
- seems to defeat every purpose of a cork grip.
Three years ago, when I put cork grips on my daughter's upright bike, I
used spar varnish and here's the result 3 years later - it's soft and
grippy, and still beads water like a new Ferrari

That's the good news - now the bad news: you have to be patient, because
it takes 7 days to do this right (hey, it takes a month to mastic-varnish a
silk fly line). You want 5 coats, and wait a day between each coat to let
it soak and cure. You apply thin coats and of course the cork sucks it
right up. Wait a day and apply another. It won't be until the 4th coat
that you can see the cork is sealed and you're apply a build-up. After the
last coat, give it two days to cure, and it will still feel tacky - don't
worry. Take a lint-free cloth and buff it like you're shining shoes. You
will be delighted with the result for years...

[RBW] Brooks Team Pro saddle

Older saddle, never actually broken in. Adjusting bolt still in original
factory position. Leather in great shape, treated with Obenauf's. Brooks
name badge is darkened.

This saddle does not suit my riding position or general riding style.
Before it goes on eBay, is anyone interested at $50, plus shipping by your
favorite method? Current new list for the chrome rail variety is about
$195.00 US.(Brooks web site) + shipping

Please contact off list..
