It handles SO well! I loaded up the front slickersack yesterday with a lot
of weight and it was smooth and not twitchy at all. Today I loaded up the
Saddlesack with about 15 pounds and it didn't even feel like there was
hardly any weight in the back. I've tried to do both of these things on a
cross-check and the bike handled horribly. The 2.0 Kojaks were also a
recommendation from many RBWs and I couldn't be happier with them. Again,
 thanks everyone!

For the record, I have a Cervelo R3 (full carbon), Giant TCX
(Aluminum/Carbon), did have a Bridgestone road frame (steel, more to come
on that), Ti SSCX with carbon fork, and a surly steamroller. Oh, and I have
just bought a used Atlantis... :)

The Cervelo R3 was made with a more upright, 'classics' geo a year or two
back when I got it. I've ridden it on a few 100 mile rides, going hard and
have been amazingly comfortable the entire time, and that's on 25mm tires!
Maybe it's the spaghetti-sized seat stays that soak up the vibrations, but
it is truly a dreamy ride quality.

I used to have a wonderful Bridgestone steel road frame, with Suntour
Cyclone 2 drivetrain and Sugino Mighty Competition. I never found out the
model. I actually found the complete bike in a pile of garbage at a
construction site. It looked brand new, hah! Then something got caught in
my front wheel while riding at maybe 15-20km/h. I immediately flipped over
the bars and woke up in the hospital a few hours later. Thank god I had a
helmet on (which at that time was not normal for me). The steel fork was
totally destroyed. I doubt having a carbon fork would have made things
worse or better. I've had a lot of nasty head-on crashes with my CX bikes,
both with carbon forks, and no issues. They are a lot stronger than one
 might think.

In the end, I agree - I've felt great on aluminum, carbon, steel, and ti.
Rider position, tires, saddle, and wheels make way more of a difference
 than frame material.

On Saturday, April 19, 2014 12:31:22 AM UTC-5, Michael wrote:

I'm talking ride quality only, not function.
Don't blow a gasket until you read this post in full.

Steel, carbon, Alu, Ti, Rando-lite frames, etc.

I just saw a RAAM documentary. Actually I have watched three of them.
Those guys are mostly carbon, skinny tires, with bars waaay low, yet
they do hundreds of miles a day, culminating in a 3,000 mile race finish in
less than 10 days. You gotta be comfy on your bike to a certain degree to
survive a 3,000 mile ride in 10 days or less. You can't really argue with
that. Yeah, they are athletes, and suffer, but read on...

I'm starting to think that no frame material is better than another when
at the higher quality levels and craftsmanship. And I think RAAM blows it
all outta the water. RAAM has been ridden on just about everything I would
think. I don't think these people are dummies, and I am sure they have done
their homework to find what suits their needs. I think it's just preference
at that point. I don't know that Jure Robic (5-time RAAM winner) would have
done any better, or felt any better, on a Herse, Scott, Lightspeed, or
Roadeo. Someone once asked him how his behind felt during RAAM, and he
stuck his fingers in his mouth imitating a gun. I don't think that would
have changed no matter what he was riding (and it looked like a studded
leather saddle in the documentary I saw).

Now function is another thing altogether. You want braze-ons and wide
tires and clearance, approach a steel frame builder for sure.

I needed to ride through mud and gravel to continue on my way today and
I was glad I was on my fender-ed Rivbike with 42 mm tires and not on a 25mm
 tire-ed race bike.

I'm not going to touch safety and lifetime issues of materials. The
 battle rages.

Anyway, since I got my head out of carbon, and have been reading a lot
about steel, I have been wondering. Because everyone seems to love their
quality bikes, no matter what the material is.

Re: [RBW] Starting to wonder if all this frame stuff really matters.

2014-04-23 Thread redsydude

The people on this list have forgotten more about bikes than I’ll ever know
but I was around the golf business when aerospace engineers and materials
scientists started to revolutionize the clubs and the ball. I’m sure that
the intent was to help the average player make better contact, get the ball
up in the air and hit it a little straighter (and sell everybody a new set
of clubs). In the hands of professionals, the new club and ball
completely changed the game and forced tournament courses to be redesigned
to protect par. However, for the average guy with the average golf swing,
the club and ball were never an important limiting factor to better
scoring. I recently heard that now that equipment improvements have
plateaued, pros are practicing with old persimmon woods and balata balls to
get better feedback on contact. Likewise, I read that the Lovely Bicycle
blogger was climbing hills in a higher than optimum gear try to do some
resistance training. When I was in the Air Force I worked on tactics
against surveillance architectures. Then I was recruited into a group
developing countermeasures against those tactics. I was aware of groups
working on countermeasures against our countermeasures that we called
counter-countermeasures. Crazy games.

(Rivendell), I suggest you give it a try and then get back to the group
about your opinion of which you prefer. No doubt steel will hold up better
through the millenia and won't crack in crash, but bikes don't crash that
often and why not enjoy the ride in as many ways as you can?

They didn't publish the frame weight in BQ. Calfees site has a page for

 pictured without pedals.

I assume we could spec that Roadeo with the same parts, and we'd probably
be 2 to 3 pounds heavier and about $1500-$2000 less expensive? Somewhere
 in there.

This is correct! Riv list a 55cm Roadeo with I believe Sram Force at 18lbs
w/o pedals or saddle:

Built up with Mark's choice of lightish clubby parts, his 55cm weighs
(minus saddle and pedals) 18 pounds.

link: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-roadeo.htm

Further, Riv doesn't specify parts, but they do say: we're able to price
the Roadeo at $4,200 (or so), several hundred to several thousand dollars
less than similarly equipped MCRBs. Assuming again that is for a Sram Force
group, the Roadeo bike will weigh about 2lbs more but cost $2100 less than
a similarly equipped Calfee!

However, the new carbon frames coming out of Taiwan are even lighter and in
some cases cheaper! One friend recently bought new Taiwanese-made bike
with Sram Red and it cost him a little over $5000, the bike weighs 15lbs.
I've seen last year's C'dale Evo with Sram Red sell for about $3300!
That bike weighed in at a little over 15lbs, but when a few friends test
road it, they said that bike was very, very stiff to the point of being
uncomfortable! Looking at that bike, I could see that it had 700x23 tires,
probably pumped up to 120psi, and it would be very difficult to get a 25 in
there. I'll passGood Luck!

If both bikes had the same tires, I bet they'd both be awesome.

weight would you save with the carbon fiber?

I'm not concerned in this discussion with the catastrophic fail rate of
CF versus steel; I'm interested in a CF frameset that under the same normal
use as the Roadeo would last as long as the Roadeo.

Nor am I concerned about building into the steel frameset any extra
measure of safety; just your typical top quality steel sport-tourer type of
 frame.

That is to say: no stupid light gauge or design on either frameset, nor
any scrupulous over building. I know that you can buy a CF racing frame
that weighs less than 2 lb in a small size, but I want to compare a carbon
fiber frame and fork that are as durable and have as much clearance as
 their steel counterparts.

Use whatever strength-to-weight tweaking tricks you can; just have the
CF frameset be as long-term-reliable as the steel one made from top quality
tubing. Again, how much weight difference?

So much of our discussions about CF versus steel seem to be comparing
 apples to kumkwats.

very respectable builders.

This, to me anyway, seems a significant difference between CF and steel as

Yeah, if we are talking custom, e.g., custom geometry, then that
really changes things as most CF frames coming out of Taiwan or elsewhere
are pretty much stock production sizes. For custom carbon, you're looking
at a handful of very expensive builders - Calfee, Parlee and Crumpton top
the list. However, their custom frames start at about $3500 (Calfee
tetra-custom) and go way up.

In contrast, custom steel frames can be expensive depending on the
builder. If you're looking top tier like a Richard Sachs or Sasha
White/Vanilla, both of whom have like 5+ year wait list, expect to pay
$4000+ for a frameset (frame and fork), Bruce Gordon is in that same range
and I think Brent Steelman is the highest with a starting price of
something like $5500! Even Riv customs are $3500. Of course, there are
builders who are cheaper like Roland Della Santa and Steve Rex who
I believe *only* charges between $2000-2500.

Lots of good stuff out there, it all depends on what you want! Good Luck!

scale, but some of us actually like to ride. Furthermore some of us like
to ride fast. A 15lb bike that forces you into slower, less comfortable
tires is not appealing. That's the only reason I was comparing the
Adventure Calfee to the Roadeo. When there's bargain carbon frameset that
takes 30mm tires or wider, that will be interesting.

[RBW] Re: 7 speed cassette question

+1. I find that if I eyeball my limit screw on the small-cog end, that I
need to back off the H limit screw another quarter turn or so to quiet it
down in that cog. Set up correctly and quietly the R Der looks like it's
going a little bit beyond the small cog.

Foundry Cycles, which I believe is another QBP brand, has a couple of
(relatively) budget oriented carbon frames that may fit the bill. The
Thresher is their road endurance model, sporting disc brakes and
clearance for 28c (per Tree Fort Bikes website). The Augur is a cross
utility bike that has geometry that's not so different from a road
endurance bike (73/73 head and seat tube angles, 42.5cm chainstays) and
fairly generous clearances.

Re: [RBW] Re: Starting to wonder if all this frame stuff really matters.

2014-04-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Segwaying a bit, a somewhat odd local character (whom I've not seen for a
couple of years, btw) had a Parlee road frame converted into a fixed gear
with cheap rattrap pedals sans clips 'n' straps and cheap scavenged wheels.
But damn if that thing wasn't light! I hefted it and, despite the heavy
metal, it felt as if it weighed no more than 12 lb.

My fixed gofast weighs just under 18 lb ready to ride (saddle - Flite,
pedals-Keo Max, and cage-Iris) and when I had the other very similar Riv
built as a 1X10 it weighed just under 20. Sizes are upslopetubed 57 and 58
respectively. No stupid light parts unless you consider (as you well
may) ti stem binder bolts and Phil ti bb assemblies with aluminum cups
stooopid.

Anyway, I tell you (and I'll tell you again and again and again, no doubt)
that climbing with the gofast brings additional pleasure to the activity of
climbing standing in a highish gear. It does climb *so* easily! I'd love to
have a CF gofast with super light everything (as long as it were durable
and comfortable.

 pictured without pedals.

I assume we could spec that Roadeo with the same parts, and we'd probably
be 2 to 3 pounds heavier and about $1500-$2000 less expensive? Somewhere
 in there.

If both bikes had the same tires, I bet they'd both be awesome.

the Roadeo as a well known to all example of the design I mean) with
similar clearances, similar braze-ons, and with similar long-term
durability, out of top quality steel and out of carbon fiber, how much
weight would you save with the carbon fiber?

[RBW] Re: Burly Piccolo/Panniers Question

2014-04-23 Thread timv1234
So the general consensus is, yes you can run panniers with the piccolo
attached, you have to have clips large enough to fit the beefy tubing, and
you have to watch the spacing so you don't interfere with some of the jogs
and other parts of the rack.

Can you use panniers on the Moose rack without the piccolo attached? Right
where the center pannier clip is, is right where the rack is 'jogged in'.
Anybody ever done that successfully?

Can you use panniers on the Moose rack without the piccolo attached?
Right where the center pannier clip is, is right where the rack is 'jogged

 Anybody ever done that successfully?

Re: [RBW] Re: Burly Piccolo/Panniers Question

2014-04-23 Thread Peter Morgano
thanks to for all the responses. I have some carsick panniers enroute
thanks to Ron. Now another question as I look at the bike, will my
neo-retros stick out too far? does it matter if the bag touches them?

Panniers are no problem without the Picolo attached.

Right where the center pannier clip is, is right where the rack is 'jogged
 in'.
 Anybody ever done that successfully?

 Thanks,

I know some fellow listers have used the Piccolo/Moose Rack, I just
don't know if it would work with panniers. I want to pack up the bike for
picnics and s24s with the kiddo but don't know if there is any real estate
left for panniers once the bike is attached to the rack. I haven't used
panniers in about 15 years so not sure just from eyeballing it if there is
enough room left on the top of the rack to clip in panniers. I think this
is the only solution for loading up as the piccolo sure doesn't leave room
for a big saddlebag and I cant do bags up front (just my thing). Thanks to
anyone who has any advice. Oh, here is a link to the rack and bike hooked

[RBW] Re: GAP Trail from Confluence to Rockwood, PA

2014-04-23 Thread hsmitham
Erl,

Enjoyed the post and pictures. I think it's a wonderful notion to do a ride
like this with your boys. I love the Strawberry Quick drink, I favor a
Strawberry Malt myself. I really look to the future post and pictures of
this great family tour.

Riv content: Two Rivendell-inspired riders, two Riv’d out Surly LHTs, a

This summer my wife and I are planning to ride the entire Great Allegheny
Passage (GAP) trail (150 miles) from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD with
our 13 and 11 year old sons. Since we have never cycled the GAP, we
decided some real world experience would help us prepare the boys for the
adventure. We settled on exploring one of the more remote stretches, the
20 miles between Confluence and Rockwood, PA. On Friday afternoon, my
wife and I loaded our two bikes on the car and drove the three hours to
Confluence, PA. We spent the night at River View Kitchenettes, a great
place right along the GAP Trail and overlooking the river. After an
early evening walk around the town, the Trailside restaurant provided us a
great pizza dinner washed down with a strawberry Nestle Quick.

The morning came crisp and clear; it was going to be a beautiful weekend
for cycling. After a delicious breakfast at Sister’s Café, we set off by
10am. Leaving Confluence the trail runs consistently uphill to Rockwood,
PA. The grade is gently but unrelentingly upward with little opportunity
for coasting. However, we were in no hurry and spun along at a
comfortable, leisurely pace enjoying the beauty and quiet of the forest we
rode through. The trail follows the Casselman River, and as we rode we
listened to the water rushing by. The main CSX rail line runs on the
other side of the river and goes through both Confluence and Rockwood.
 Freight
trains rolled through at least every hour. I enjoy trains and was not
bothered by their presence. In reading online reviews of lodging options
along the trail, many reviewers do complain about the train noise,
especially at night. At times we felt like the only people for miles
around. At the Pinkerton High Bridge, next to the closed Pinkerton
Tunnel, about half way between Confluence and Rockwood, we took a break
overlooking the river. Oranges and another Strawberry Quick refreshed.
 Three
and half hours after leaving Confluence we arrived in Rockwood. Did I
say we took a leisurely pace? We did pass perhaps a dozen people, a mix
of bikers and hikers, in the 20 miles.

Rockwood was a welcoming place, and we enjoyed more pizza and some ice
cream at the Mill Shoppes on Main Street. We then explored some of the
more kid friendly lodging options in town for the summer trip, while
waiting to check in at the Gingerbread House BB. The BB was wonderful,
and we spent the late afternoon relaxing and reading on the porch swing.
Sunday morning dawned crisp and clear. After a delicious breakfast at
the BB of blueberry French toast, we headed back down the trail to
Confluence. The downward grade was a welcome relief from yesterday’s
ride and we covered the distance in only two and half hours. Still
 leisurely.

Overall it was a terrific weekend, and we are excited to experience the
whole trail as a family this summer. Pictures prove we did something on
 a trail with bikes:

[RBW] Re: Grey Blue, Blue Grey Sam Hillborne touch up paint.

2014-04-23 Thread Richard Rios

Thanks for the tips. They led me to checking around a bit and found this
testors paint color http://www.testors.com/products/136917. Just by
eyeballin' it, it looks pretty close to me. What do you think? I'm gonna
try and go down to the local hobby shop here in the next couple of days and
see if they have it. Hopefully it will be a good match...

 Hi All,

I know Riv suggests just touching paint chips up with any old color...but
I definitely lean towards the finding a close color match side of things.
With that said, anyone have any success finding a close color match for
touching up the greyish blue blueish grey Sam Hillborne color. I poked
around a bit and found some info on the orange but nada on the blue grey
color. I have a couple of chips that are just kinda bugging me like a
small rock in the bottom of your shoe kinda deal. Any help is appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Richard
