Re: [RBW] Are Zefal frame pumps really that hard to find?

2014-07-19 Thread Scott Henry
I can't say that I've ever notice Riv being cheaper on anything. I
like the company and all, but in about 3 minutes of google work I was able
to find that $36 pump ranging from $24 to $34 everywhere else.

If I'm looking for a hard to find something of the Riv esthetic, I will
head to rivbike.com, past that I haven't found them cheaper on anything
that I can purchase someplace else.I'm not worried about it, I know how
shops work, they have to price a percentage above what they are able to
purchase items for. Riv can't really command the wholesale pricing that
other shops/distributors can.

As to the original question, yes full size frame pumps of any brand are
hard to find at any shop. It's economics, in order to stock full size
frame pumps the shop will have to stock anywhere from 3 to 7 different
sizes. With multiples in the more common sizes, a shop could easily stock
15 pumps to fit their regular customer base. With a pocket pump, stock
one SKU, easy choice. I have to agree though, I am not a fan of CO2. I
have a few inflators, but just never liked them. If you buy one though,
just head to WalMart and buy the CO2 cartridges in the BBgun aisle, its
much much cheaper.

Sorry,
Scott

Your rationale makes sense, except there were typically entire shelves of
mini pumps with more SKUs that one can shake a stick at.

I actually do have two or three CO2 inflators but I don't use them anymore
because I tend to get punctures in series (this is why I typically carry a
full patch kit in addition to tubes). Nevertheless, an additional tag-on
for your excellent hint to get BB gun cartridges instead of bonafide
"bicycle" cartridges is to ensure that you buy a CO2 inflator that supports
*unthreaded* cartridges. A lot of these CO2 inflators, especially the
really compact ones, require *threaded* cartridges that go for $3++/pcs.

I don't mind supporting Rivbike, reasonably higher price or otherwise, as I
want to support their cycling philosophy. (not trying to convince anyone of
this) In fact, I have a short running wish list that I can execute on. I
guess I just prefer to touch things before I buy, although that seems to be
impossible in this case. They are local enough that I can take a day off
from work and just bike-BART there, especially since I have a clothing item
on my wish list that I rather try on before purchase.

Truthfully, I'm more surprised than anything that frame pumps are as rare
as they are.

Thanks for the comments!

Over on the iBOB list this is a rule, which I prefer.
I opt not to get email updates on threads so my email isn't full of list
emails. If someone posts to a thread, I won't see it until I check lists.
A private email to poster should get a response from the poster as to
whether the item is available.
I check my email far too frequently, but understand that many people don't
and that an inquiry I send may take a bit to get a response.
That being said, sometimes PMs don't seem to work for some and PMs cannot
be sent from most mobile devices thanks to Google Groups mobile interface.

A hub, rim and spokes are all separate parts which must be sold together in
order for Rich to build a wheel and send it to you. A cassette, skewers and
tires/tubes are necessary to finish getting that wheel on your bike and

any non-integral parts to be part of the deal.

[RBW] Edeluxe on sidepull bike mounting?

2014-07-19 Thread lungimsam
Still mulling over getting a hub generator and light.
Crazy expensive, though.
Seems like most quality bike things are getting crazy expensive these days.

*1. How to mount an edeluxe to a sidepull bike?*
No interest in a front rack at this point.
Just want to get a hub and a light.

*2. Also: the new "wireless" Son hub is only wireless hub to fork dropout
attachment, right? You still have to run wires from fork dropout to light?*

[RBW] Edeluxe on sidepull bike mounting?

2014-07-19 Thread justinaugust
It's definitely crazy expensive if you're only looking at SON + Edluxe!
Checkout the Handspun Pavement series and B&M Cyo series.

And yes the SON Deluxe is the only "wireless" one but it does require a custom
fork be built.

[RBW] Re: Edeluxe on sidepull bike mounting?

2014-07-19 Thread Minh
Just my 2 cents on the cost. I started out with a budget light (not quite
the level of a cyo), it was fine. I now have an Edelux (v1)+SONdeluxe,
does it perform 10x better then my last one not really. But i don't regret
getting it as they are really well made items.

If the cost is preventing you from getting a dyno setup, then i'd agree
with Justin, go for the Cyo and one of the other dyno options (SV, Sanyo,
Shimano), as functionally i don't feel you'd notice a difference. If
you're at peace with wanting to have nice things and spending the money
accordingly, then go for the Edelux+SON as they are pretty nice.

If you're OK with the idea of buying from over-seas, there are some options
where you can save some money, but that does limit your warranty options if
something happens to them down the road and both of these have pretty long
warranties.

And i don't look at it that quality bike things are getting crazy
expensive, i look at it as the range of affordable stuff has gotten so good
that it's hard to justify paying more--which goes back to me 'nice things'
comment :)

While i would overall agree that skewers should not be automatically

[RBW] Re: Edeluxe on sidepull bike mounting?

2014-07-19 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
I currently have a Shimano dynohub and an Edelux 1.

My Edelux is rack mounted, but there are lots of brackets out there to allow
fork mounting, fender mounting, etc. If your fork has any tapped holes for a
rack, that's a good place to start.

Now, the Edelux was a splurge. I was rebuilding after a bad accident...but you
can get excellent lights from $30 on up. It's a very pretty thing, but not
much more functional than the $30 plastic Avenir unit.

My Shimano dynohub has been solid for a decade. However, it has become noisy
when stopping (I suspect an unfortunately resonant fork on my VO; it never made
a peep on my Kogswell) so I am presently looking at other options, including
Dymotec and Velogical units and an older bottom-bracket mounted dyno. (A
friend of mine has a Magnic set on order as well.) I will be posting a
comparison of dyno types on my blog in late July or early August.

I do recommend the Shimano hub dyno very highly. It's 95+% of SON for about
1/3 the price.

As for the wireless bit, that just means you don't need to plug in the wires to
the wheel. SON uses spade lugs; Shimano uses a plastic plug. The wireless
system just means the connection is made through plates on the inner faces of
the dropouts, so no need to have wires THERE. You do still need to run a wire
to the headlight of your choice.

Unless you frequently take off your front wheel, more trouble than it's worth,
IMO.

[RBW] Re: QR question

2014-07-19 Thread Matthew J
I have bought wheels from Rich, Peter White, an excellent local builder,
and a couple resales over the years.

If the hubs in question are not sold with skewers, the wheels do not come
with skewers. Based on my experience, it is industry standard (Shimano
excepted) that skewers are an extra one needs to request.

Riv, bless 'em, can be more of a hand holder outfit than some of the
others. Only problem is customers get so used to it if Riv does not hold
tight enough things go wrong.

For bike camping, I suggest the Helinox: light, compact, comfy, and
although a tad pricey; worth every penny.

Maybe you can buy one from a big-box sporting goods store that has Sunday

[RBW] Paul's brakes on your Riv. Experience between models?

2014-07-19 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
So my curiosity has been peaked after a brief discussion on the trail with a
guy about his Paul's mini motos. He was very impressed with them even having
previously been using the neo retros on the same bike, a Rock Lobster cross.
The claim was FAR more power and better modulation with all other variables
consistent. Levers were cane creek. For some reason I lumped the Minis in with
the touring cantis in that they were for more clearance, but not much different
as to power. After some quick reading on the magic computer box, it seems this
guy is not alone in his assessment.

I am a big fan of cantilever style brakes. So much so, I decided to take the
center mount racers off my Hilsen to have canti studs added. Plan was to swap
the Racers for some Neo Retros...but now I'm wondering about the Mini Motos.

Has anyone tried the Minis, or even better, both Minis and Neos??

For the record, I know I like the Neos , and the direct mount racers on my
Rambler are awesome. And YES, I realize a set of xt v-brakes would deliver, but
I don't like the aesthetic and don't want to change levers.

[RBW] Re: Paul's brakes on your Riv. Experience between models?

2014-07-19 Thread RJM
I don't know about the minis because all I've used are the Paul Moto BMX
brakes on my Samthey are powerful once set up correctly, which can
actually take some fiddling. There must be some trick I wasn't getting when
I was setting mine up because I fussed and fussed with them for over an
hour. Finally got them set up, but I was a bit frustrated. The quick
release on the Moto brakes is absolutely the best in the business. The Mini
Motos use a slightly different release that looks just as good and easy. I
think the finish of Paul brakes are top notch and they are really great
brakes. I'm not currently using the Moto BMX brakes, but they are sitting
in the parts bin looking for a bike to put them on, but wouldn't hesitate
recommending them to others.

Re: [RBW] Paul's brakes on your Riv. Experience between models?

2014-07-19 Thread Dan McNamara
I have used the Neos, the touring and the Mini-Motos. If you don't need
clearance for tires larger than 42-45 then the mini-Motos are a great choice.
They modulate and are really powerful. They will clear a fender and a somewhat
classic look. For V-brakes, that is.

I have Neo-Retros on my Hunq and I have to say I'm a little disappointed.
They look great, but don't have as much stopping power as I'd like. (I've
consulted Sheldon's articles on cantilever brake theory and practice, and
have done my best to optimize the geometry.)

The Minis are an intriguing option, but I'm worried about fender clearance
with 55mm tires. I'd also be using MTB-style levers.

[RBW] Re: QR question

2014-07-19 Thread gep71154
Hi Peter,
Sorry about that frustrating lack of quick-releases. I don't know the
specifics, but if the hubs come with one, we certainly tend and intend to
include it--although human flubup may interfere once in a while. If the
hubs don't come with a quick-release (like Phil, Bullseye, and I'm guessing
some other boutiquers), then we usually assume the rider has quick-releases
from another set of wheels to be used for these.

Assumptions are never super safe to make, but after many hundreds of
skewer-less wheelsets sent out, we can't help but think there q/rs are
coming off a shelved pair of wheels.

Tell me or Rich or Dave the spacing of the rear (130 or 135) and we'll send
you some skewers, regardless. You've been a good customer for a long time,
and it's our pleasure to do this.

When we buy wheels or hubs from the mfrs...only about half the time does
the q/r come with. Shimano and Campy, of course...but with the SILVERs, for
instance (not to restart that topic), it's assumed that if we want skewers,
we'll order them separately...which of course we do...because I'm widjoo:
Seems only right that wheels come with them.

When we buy Shimano skewers separately, they can cost us $12 to
$20/pair...and upping the price of the wheels might make sense, but then
some riders won't want to spare skewers-- or at least won't want to pay
more to get 'em.

This is one of those things without a clear-cut perfect-for-all solution,
but the main thing now is: Tell one of us (rich, dave, me) the rear
spacing--rich might know but he's not here now)--and we'll get you some
Tiffany/Hermes skewers, or something that'll work, anyway!
B,

Grant

Re: [RBW] QR question

2014-07-19 Thread Christopher Murray
As someone who lives in a fairly remote place and thus has to order most
things, I can certainly relate to the frustration when something arrives
broken, wrong, missing parts, etc. It is almost never a case of running out to
a local store to make it right. It involves phone calls and return shipping and
(WORST OF ALL) more waiting. Obviously the OP is in a situation where he can't
just run out to get a QR so that magnifies the frustration of things not
showing up as expected. Yes, I think the frustration was expressed a little
more crudely than necessary, but I also think we should cut the guy some slack.
He paid for something and waited and when it showed up it was not what he
expected. These things do happen of course and you just need to deal with them
without losing your cool. He wanted to ride and couldn't and it doesn't sound
like he has a ton of free time to just ride whenever.

Peter, I am sorry your wheel didn't arrive as expected. That sucks and must be
super disappointing. Call Riv and see what they say. In my experience they will
take care if it and be more sorry about it than you. They are great people and
will make it right. Hang in there it will get resolved.

Cheers,
Chris

[RBW] Re: Paul's brakes on your Riv. Experience between models?

2014-07-19 Thread Mike Schiller
Brad, I'm kinda in the same boat... I had brazed on Racers which are
incredible rim brakes but I find them a touch klunky. I have the
neo-retros on two bikes, them seem to have better modulation with the
fatter spacers on the pads.
I'd like to try the Mini motos but I'm currently running 48 mm WTB
Ninelines and I don't think they will fit. I've seen them with BG Rock n'
roads and they clear fine.

The best set up I've heard is Mini motos up front and Touring canti's out
back for modulation.

Re: [RBW] QR question

2014-07-19 Thread Peter Morgano
Thanks for the kind words, I try to keep my cool at all times but was so
bummed to miss a beautiful weekend riding since its just been super hectic
at work lately and being out in the woods here the lack of a good LBS
sucks. My new local is closed at 2 on Saturday all day sunday Monday and
Tuesday, its a great little operation but finding the time in my schedule
to get out there is impossible. Thanks for the reply Grant, sorry if I was
inelegant, its unfortunately my nature, no amount of smacks to the back of
the head from my mom will change me it seems. I did tear apart the spare
parts bin looking for a skewer tonight and all I came up with was a couple
of janky looking steel front skewers and I need a rear 135mm. I have some
time tomorrow and will call up RBW and work it out. (I never know whether
to directly respond to you-grant and RBW employees on the list or not so
will just call). If they could send along a Hermes handbag as well that
would make my wife happy too, hahaha.

[RBW] Riv headset spacer bell mount outside diameter in line with your spacers, or wider?

2014-07-19 Thread lungimsam
Looks like the outer spacer mount diameter bulges out wider than the
regular spacer diameters on 1" steerers, like the pic on the rivsite (
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bellhed.htm)

So I was wondering, does it stick out on yours, or is it just that way in
that pic they have on the site?

One of my favorite features of Riv bikes are the "shot-glasses" - the
pretty stack of headset spacers. I don't want to ruin the line.

Maybe I am just cork grip sniffing about this, but it's one of the things I
find beautiful on these bikes.

So just want to know how it really is so I can stop mulling and either get
one, or wait until they start selling one with a uniform outer diameter for
1" spacers.

Didn't they have one with an aluminum (silver colored) bell on it once?
That would be a nice match for all the silver color on these bikes.

Re: [RBW] Anyone in Chicago have an Albastache bar I can check out?

2014-07-19 Thread Aaron Young
Kevin,

I'm not in Chicago and don't have Albastache bars on my bikes, but maybe,
just maybe I can be forgiven for offering an opinion anyhow. I have both
an Albatross'd and a Moustache'd bike (old style Moustache). I like both
bars a lot. However, I recently rode 3 or so different bikes with the
Albastaches and got a pretty good feel for it. If my original Moustache
bars weren't so great as they are, then I would immediately opt for an
Albastache. In fact, I will likely soon replace the Albatross for
Albastache bars. I have the 'tross bars on a mountain-ish type bike and
don't really like the hand position for descents. I much prefer the
position of the brakes and wrists on Moustache/Albastache/straight bars for
descending.

I say just go for it. I think you will like them.

Best of luck,

Aaron Young
