[RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)
Liesl, This is not a mutually exclusive pair of afflictions (torn meniscus and bicycling). I had a pretty bad knee injury that among other damage on the surgeon's list included a meniscus tear. They did clip a portion but felt in that the long term I'd fare better if thy didn't clip all of the way to the base of the tear since it would remove too much useful surface. Net outcome for me was an occasional situation such as yours, funny feeling, harder to extend and increased sensitivity/ buckling during episodes. Theory was that some less controlled movement (every knee with a meniscus tear has its own sensitive direction of movement which can turn up the tear-lberated flap of cartilage making an unnatural spot of double thick meniscus) turned up the margin and began the period of affliction. Not being as generous as a Rivendell warranty perspective, the follow-on diagnostics of my periodic symptoms have been much less than your work up, enough said. Being left to my own devices and advise of a number of friends closer to the orthopedic or therapy professions than me I have come up with this chain of events; Summer ends, my riding decreased and consequently my leg muscle tone did as well, including that one on the inside of the front of your leg right above the knee. It positions the joint when in extension and bulges when your leg is locked straight. All it took was a little slowness to contract against the precise slop of movement my meniscus free edge took to get turned. Felt like I was limping about several late winters. I got serious about it when it creeped into one spring. I hung from my hands (or armpits for longer periods) trying to relax my legs as much as possible, slowly twisting my trunk left then right while remaining as loose as possible. Over a few days it felt like the folded meniscus unfolded...those things are not instant telegraphed sensations, that's why the moment of offense is tough to pin down. To prevent the tone loss once able, I began a regimen of locked leg lifts from a supine position, beginning barefooted then progressing to incrementally heavier footwear. Having done this to recover from the lower tone of winter I opted to buck up and just keep riding into and through the winter, I'm an outdoor person and my version of hell is indoor calisthenics or a gym. Hieronymous Bosch would've had an LA Fitness in this picture if he knew of them: http://fullyreconditioned.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/bosch.jpg Some may think if you look closely enough you can find a commuter on studded tires in that image, but heck you live in Minneapolis! Hope your medical resources are able to get you out of the cycle and outfitted with steps to keep how you feel now at bay. Over the past week or a bit longer, I've developed a really pronounced pain in my right knee. It's on under the front part of my kneecap and is bad enough that I stopped riding and am limping a bit. I do think it's riding related. Here's some info: I switched pedals maybe a week or two ago from thin griptsters to sneaker pedals. I switched back and forth between seats/seatposts during this time as well, and may have gotten the height off. The right knee was bothering me a little bit during this time, but then really got sore two days ago when I rode up a short but extremely steep hill that I usually walk up (for locals, it was the long bit of driveway between pleasant and w. irvine ave adjacent to Ramsey hill). I dropped down to granny gears and sat part of the way and then stood up to finish the hill. The next meaning I was just about hobbled—but only my right knee. Left knee is fine as can be. That waffling imprint makes a feeder stiffer with a thinner stock sheet of aluminum. Some makers are true to that application of the visual cue, others are decorative than structural, pricing accordingly. I got a set of Honjos from a liBob lister and thy are truly light. Against others I've since seen in person they truly use the hammering as a way to add third dimensioning to the sheet stock. [RBW] Re: Hammered Honjo shopping confusion. Help!
Indeed, there is a lot of confusion. I just went through this myself, sourcing some hammered Honjos for my new Jeff Lyon custom. Not only are the widths different, but so are the ends (sculpted versus plain), and some models also come completely undrilled and with no hardware. I ended up with the hammered H50's, which measure 51-52mm, have the sculpted ends, and came with no hardware or drillings. I sourced the hardware separately. Jitensha and Boulder were the two shops with these models, but I have no idea whether Boulder's version is drilled or comes with hardware. I got mine from Jitensha. Those suggestions already listed are good. Tunnel Road is certainly a favorite. One route listed above have you going down on Pinehurst but that's a road you should climb up. A popular loop starts you in Berkeley and then through Moraga before coming back on Pinehurst. I will be happy to do a short ride with you on Thursday or Friday of that week--i am in Berkeley also. Unfortunately, my bikes are just a tad too big. My wife's (56cm) might fit, but I have to check with her first. Contact me off list if you want more info on rides, or need tools to assemble/adjust your bike once you get it here. I don't own this perm, but it's a good one! It starts in Oakland http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2063647 and is a round trip route to Danville, where you can snack. [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal
RCW, I too spent some time in music. Do you remember hearing a universal tuning note called A440? Meaning the string, or whatever, moves 440 cycles per second. So braking causes some components on your bike to vibrate at the frequencies called high D (faster) and low E (slower). I spent less time in physics, more in engineering, and still can't figure out natural frequency, but the diameter of a string, its length and its tension might all affect pitch. Variables like those in a brake squeal situation could include rim diameter, rim sidewall stiffness/size, length/rigidity of brake arms and pads. [RBW] Re: Jamboree and Entmoot shirts and patches
Patches are in stock and ready to ship! The second run of patches arrived on Monday. If you bought a patch, they're in the mail. I addressed all the envelopes last night, and got the patches in the box shortly after midnight. See them here on Etsy: http://etsy.me/1ycii2f About the patches: The three bicycles show the three different production runs of Rivendell's Quickbeam bicycle: Green (like mine), Orange, and Silver. Each bike is shown set up in a different way, with different tires, bars, and style. The knobbies on the green one came out really well - offroad fixed gear, with flared drops and a front bag. The orange one is set up as a light road machine, with only a seat bag, and the silver is flaneur style, with matching bags front and rear, and upright bars. These are very high-quality 4 patches, embroidered in America by a bicycle afficionado, made to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Quickbeam bicycle and the 20th anniversary of Rivendell Bicycle Works. If you like fixed gear bikes, singlespeeds, Rivendells, or patches, you are welcome to get one. Tee shirts: I have one M and one L left, each with an orange bike. $25 + $5 shipping. [RBW] Captain hook basket net looks nice!
CAP'N!! https://www.rivbike.com/product-p/netrbw.htm Since I had the 40.5lb Bombadill down off her hook, I went ahead and did the Grant-procedure on my normal black cargo-net. It comes with 4 removable hooks. Remove two hooks and zip-tie one side of the rectangular cargo net to one side of your basket. Use two (or three) hooks to treat your cargo-net like a cargo-LID. This Captain Hook net looks even better. I'll have to remember to add one to my next order. I particularly like this part of the description: Tip-tip: They come with four hooks. Remove two, tie those two corners onto the basket, and then replace two small hooks from another net with the two you just took off. Then you’ll have two spare smallish hooks, and those’ll get you nowhere, but keep them around anyway. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Somewhat OT: Advice about basic Kindle versus Kindle Fire
I don't have a Kindle, but I do have a Kobo Aura (similar to the Kindle's Paperwhite, but Canadian). Even though I have an iPad Mini, I keep the Kobo around for longer reading sessions. It's distraction free, there is no glare when reading in direct sunlight, and the light weight is so much easier on my achy wrists than even the very light iPad. Even when using the Aura's built-in light, I can go about a month between charges. More if I remember to shut it off instead of just putting it to sleep. I imagine the Kindle has similar results. You can read free Project Gutenberg titles on a Kindle by going to m.gutenberg.org from the Kindle, or by downloading the files to your computer and transferring them to the Kindle using a USB cable. You *can* use it for Gmail, but I'm not sure you *should*. The processor and memory in dedicated eBook readers make them poor choices for email, except in the most extreme circumstances. If you have a smartphone, use that instead. On Saturday, August 2, 2014 11:19:31 AM UTC-7, Patrick Moore wrote: I have more and more books on the Kindle system and I'm seriously thinking of getting a small screen device on which to read them -- in between my iPhone 4 and my 17 Macbook Pro. Will the basic Kindle download and display books from The Gutenberg Project and other such sites? (I don't order from Apple, so it needn't handle their products.) 2. Can one read and send gmail on the basic Kindle? 3. How long in reality does the battery hold a charge on average with daily use of, say 3 hours? I'll welcome other practical comments. Re: [RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)
I too had a torn medial meniscus repaired arthroscopically in 2005. The procedure itself was very quick, probably no more than half an hour, and in my case I was starting to ride the bike after about six weeks. Since then I have had no trouble with it and have been very comfortable. I was able to resume my normal bike riding over about a two month period, building up gradually, as pushing it too quickly did cause some pain. I know randonneurs who had this surgery and are able to write much farther and faster than I care to try. It is possible that having a settle to Highwood aggravate the condition. In my case I started having pain when I went to 180 mm cranks from my usual 175. The difference seem to be just enough to get my range of motion into the problematic area. Going back to 175s did not solve the problem, hence the eventual trip to the orthopedic surgeon. Leisl, since you're in the Twin Cities area, I would wholeheartedly recommend my surgeon to you. Re: [RBW] Re: One week without a front derailleur
A triumphant return to this thread... so after noodling through (with all your assistance) my 1xN thoughts I doubled down by shortening my chain on the existing Sugino triple and continuing to ride throughout the month of June and July. I never missed my big or small ring and was getting pretty used to the 36T main ring but often felt I could go w/ a slightly higher #T in the front. Even with the shortened chain I continued to get chain hop on the front end, mostly with a ghost shift up to the big 46T chain ring when I was in the higher/smaller gear in the back. It was actually pretty consistent even w/ a fairly short chain. I was just about to order a set of Surly Stainless chainrings, 40 or 42T when I go the opportunity to trade in my (useless to me) 180mm WI Eno crank along with some other goodies for a 175 mm WI Eno crank, installed 44T SS chainring and some other goodies. WOW this crank/chainring is sweet. I love the look both from on and off the bike and I love the feel. I went ahead and changed out the chain and cassette at the same time. The Saluki does deserve a new derailleur at some point but this exage salvaged off my XO-3's original equipment is doing fine for now. So far so good w/ chain jump, I may end up adding a Paul chain keeper just in case but for now the combo of SS chainring and new chain is working good and solid. http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2014/08/new-drivetrain-feeling.html https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zjS5Ygj609A/U-GvQCibGoI/FKg/IHTL9WdisS4/s1600/1982+Trex+6xx+%281+of+3%29.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-bON_-yH2J2Q/U-GvU9pvzdI/FKo/UD4JVRrEuTM/s1600/1982+Trex+6xx+%282+of+3%29.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] My new 53 NIB Bleriot
So I bought this new in box 53 Bleriot frameset. I was thinking of buying the build kit from RBW, but they don't sell just the build kit. You can only buy their build kit with purchase of frameset. Or buy the parts separately, which will cost more. So I got it built up and bought parts thru local bike shoppe. 8-speed drop bar build. I am excited about the new *GB rims* that are supposed to make GB tire mounting a breeze. I am also excited about the 8-speed drivetrain. I am hoping it will make friction shifting a near-auto-shiftless experience. I am also excited about getting the *SunXCD* all silver rear derailer. They are gonna try and get it from Merry Sales. Shoppes choice of FD. They say NOS Campy all silver they have in stock. Everything else is on the bike now. Just needs the derailers and a chain. Just waiting for the LBshoppe to get in the rear derailer. *Pics to come.* I hope this works out. The wife says I should leave it tapeless as the bling of the NITTO bars is so nice. But I like grip. So I have some Aquamarine bartape from Green Grips I hope will be a close match to frame color after a few shellac attacks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
