[RBW] Re: Cambium Test. Stainless Steel Spoke Corrosion? 7-speed Hubs?

2014-08-13 Thread rperks
Take a look at the face of the broken spokes with a magnifying glass. If
there is a bit of corrosion in the face, say more than the area that looks
freshly broken, then the rust may have been working its way in there for a
while. I have a wheel that I bought as a test sample for possible OEM spec
about 2 years ago, factory built with DT spokes. Recently started popping
drive side spokes in rapid succession, All breaks at mid spoke. Even after
replacement spokes for those broken and careful tension balance, problem
persisted. I still need to contact both the wheel vendor and DT this week,
but it is clearly a corrosion problem.

I have had surface pitting on most of my spokes living near the coast my
entire life. This is the first time I have observed deep penetration
leading to failure.

Most of my graduate work was corrosion and fracture mechanics, if anybody
wants a deeper explanation I will likely bore you to sleep. But It is
looking a lot like a batch of bad spokes, at least for my wheel, so it can
happen

Where and when does a spoke break? (nl)

*Normally just before the bend (this is fairly standard after many years
 use)*

- The rim has been damaged - even the smallest dent can be the cause;
- The use of non-compatible components;
Irregular tension on the spokes;
- A gap exists in the spoke-nipple alignment;
- *Is it possible to replace 1 or 2 spokes *or do you have to replace
all the spokes and re-spoke the wheel? If you do not re-spoke the wheel,
the replaced spokes will have to be very tightly tensioned if the wheel is
to be round and true.
Do not forget when the first spoke breaks, all the other spokes
suddenly have a different tension pattern! Also the rim structure goes out
of line.
If you only replace 1 or 2 spokes, you can expect these or the spokes
next to them to break again. It is best to re-spoke the entire wheel and
 to
replace the hub just in case the hub holes are damaged. It is possible to
re-use the hub by mounting the spokes in the opposite direction (i.e. not
in the direction of the ovalisation of the hub holes).

*The spoke head breaks off (this is unusual)*

- Bad positioning of the head in the hub (e.g. a slant position puts
all the pressure on one side of the bottom of the spoke head. As a result
the head snaps off, the so-called bottle cap effect).
- The hub flange is too thick and is not suited to the length of the
spoke bend (i.e. all the pressure is on the head, which will be
 excessively
stressed and rip off).
- If the wrong cross pattern is chosen, e.g. cross 4 on large flange
hubs, the spoke bend can rub against the adjacent spoke head. This should
be avoided.

*The spoke thread breaks in the nipple*

- This often occurs as a result of nipple/rim and spoke mis-alignment.
- If spokes are used which are too long, new threads in the nipple
will be made. Under heavy pressure the spoke threads will be stressed too
greatly.
- Spokes which are too short may also break at the spoke thread.

*When the thinner middle section breaks (on single or double butted
 spokes)*

- Any object striking a moving wheel causes damage (sometimes only
visible with a magnifying glass or microscope).
- Top quality manufacture will safeguard against damage. Lower
standard processes will produce an inferior quality. SAPIM draws wire in
such way that no change in molecular material structure occurs. The spoke
does not twist much when it is built into a wheel.
- Aerodynamic, elliptical spokes, such as the SAPIM CX-Ray spoke, are
best fitted with a special CX-Ray key.
This will prevent the spokes from twisting during lacing and centring.

[RBW] Re: Touring Shoes/Pedals

2014-08-13 Thread ascpgh
My input follows input is in the Bell curve: The dual use pedals are
convenient in idea but in regular use you'll find yourself wanting to
install either a full-on platform or clipless pedal after your use pattern
settles in.

My shoe preference came from experience with fit and quality. Don't like
estimating how a shoe fits after break-in, those that changed from the out
of box fit offered that as a clue to their overall longevity. Then I tried
a pair of Sidi, they fit out of the box and fit the same way through their
service life (duration of which justifies the cost issue). Not C-F
inflexible foot casts, they do quite well on foot. Nice to have a piece of
gear that is as trustworthy as a good bottom bracket; always there, doing
what it's supposed to.

It seems that there is a general consensus that the dual-purpose pedals
are a good idea, but not great in actual application. As a few of you have
had such good experience with the Speedplay Frogs, I feel inclined to give
them a go. In the end, if I don't like them, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard

my dad, his brothers, and my grandfather, have all reported some
significant knee damage and a few replacements, that if possible, I would

 very welcome to me.

I'll look around for some shoes as well, and have had a few friends
recommend Specialized. Maybe the Tahoes? To be determined. I'll keep
everyone posted. Thanks again, and feel free to keep the information coming.

Between the two pedals, I prefer the M324. For these reasons:
Grip - the M324 has good grip on the platform side, thanks to the
bear-trap style. The A530 platform was slippery when wet, until I added
 some spikes https://www.rivbike.com/product-p/pe92.htm.
Price - M324 is cheaper; I've found them for $35-40 online.

The downside I've experienced is that the M324's seem to get squeaky
sooner than the A530's. That reminds me that I need to oil the
clips/springs on mine and check the tension.

As for shoes, I use some cheapish ($100) Specialized Sport TR shoes
(closest current model is the Sport RBX). They have a recessed tread so I
can walk more normally. They're not carbon-stiff, but not very flexible
 either.

I'm in the market for a more flexible clip shoe with a bit more tread
 for off-road excursions.  The Specialized Tahoe seems close to what I want;
I should give them a try.

[RBW] Re: Flat bar Roadeo

2014-08-13 Thread Matthew J
Jared got back to me that it's an Ahearne map bar. Nice clean look.

Cool!. MAP sweeps back more than the Jitensha. I guess the angle of the
Blug photos does not show as much.

While I prefer the Jitensha, MAP is 25.4 so fits a wider range of stems.

The Ahearne/MAP bar was in theory my favourite handlebar, but turned out
to be ever-ever-EVER so too-narrow for my tall self. There's something
perfect about the bends and the sweep

MAP also comes in an extended grip size now but I think it is about as
narrow.

This is a nice addition actually, as the original version had limited room
for grips, levers, shifters, a bell, etc.

I'm now on Soma Clarence bars - not nearly as aesthetically pleasing, but
the 660mm width is good for me. I've also got a Sycip Singlesbar on its way
to me to try out as well.

Re: [RBW] Was Redemption, now fly fishing

2014-08-13 Thread Ron Mc
Hey, I'll play. We fish 12 months/year here. The Texas hill country has
limestone warmwater creeks. The southernmost trout tailwater in the US is
20 minutes from my house, and is in John Ross's book America's 100 Best
Trout Streams (I fished with John when he was down here). I'm two hours
shortest distance to the Gulf coast. It's lined with barrier islands and
miles-on-miles of foot-deep flats and turtle grass.

Within the hill country, one noteworthy county as removed the right-of-way
from all county roads to eliminate parking at the crossings. Texas also
has a navigable water rule where the landowner owns the river bottom on
any creek less than 30' wide. The headwaters have wonderful spring creeks
that fish better than the middle rivers, which get pumped for agriculture.
These spots are prime bike-fishing. The right-of-way rule is not to keep
out fishermen, but to keep out those who would literally bring their bbq
grills and literally crap on the landowner's bank. Likewise the landowners
who don't have to give you access don't want your vehicle drawing attention
to their crossing. But the sheriffs and Most of the landowners are
amenable to biking in - parking a car is the problem for them.
So for many of these places, we can park at a state road and bike a few
miles to get in. Zoeller Lane from Sisterdale to Waring is both a great
bike ride and a great fish. Likewise, Morris Ranch Road between Tivydale
and Harper. With gravel tires, bike fish can open up a new world of access
- crossing you can't get to by car (River Bend road and the back way to
Waring).
(anyone whose still interested, here's a slideshow of my home water
http://bulldog1935.u.yuku.com/gallery/slideshow/fid/61159 , and here are
some fish, though most are tailwater trout
http://bulldog1935.u.yuku.com/gallery/slideshow/fid/61108 , and for the
person who can't get too much, my hobby business is repairing and buying
and selling vintage fly reels, which has paid for my tackle collection,
many bike parts, and kayaks, even.
http://bulldog1935.u.yuku.com/gallery/slideshow/fid/61509 )

Another kudo for Brian at Carsick designs. His roll-top panniers have nice
end pouches that fit a rod tube.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aP9180007_zps9c81c67a.jpg

of course the pannier easily fits a Brady bag and my wet-wading shoes.
With a second pannier and rando bag, I can haul my waders and cleated
boots and everything I need for a day of coldwater fishing. In the pannier
slot is a 4-pc. rod, and I can also haul 3-pc, which is the typical bamboo
rod configuration. The Japanese travel everywhere by train, and have tiny
multipiece rods to save face on the train.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/surf%20rod/hermit/hermit2.jpg

This is a 7' 6-pc. Japanese glass rod that fits in a rod tube only 15
inches long, and, of course, is a cinch to bikefish.

Re: [RBW] Re: Touring Shoes/Pedals

2014-08-13 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
It wouldn't have been pulling out. That's the point. It's a question of
what happened when I collided. With the SPDs, I didn't have to think about
pulling out, because the pedals are designed to release when force is
applied in a certain fashion (much as ski bindings are designed). That is
not the case for clips and straps--and there was not time to formulate the
need to pull out, let alone to act on it. Fortunately, the people who
designed the SPDs (or rather, knock-offs) that I was using understood how
force might be applied in an accident. That was 15 years ago.

I had a similar experience in being released from my pedals two years ago,
when I was struck from behind and crashed badly. Lots of damage done, but
(solely IMO) it could have been much worse.

I should point out that I rode with clips and straps from the '70s until
'99. It was sore feet at the end of my first century (done on GR9s with
clips and straps) that lead me to try cycling shoes in the first place,
and then to branch out to trying clipless. Not everyone has narrow size 13
feet as I do, and perhaps most of those who do find non-cycling shoes that
are comfortable. I could not, but found that cycling shoes tend to be
narrow and supportive and that led me down the road. The release function
was purely an accidental (pun intended) bonus, but I was glad to have had
it.

On Wednesday, August 13, 2014 9:40:05 AM UTC-4, Matthew J wrote:

You are strapping too tight if you cannot pull out of clips and straps as
fast as slipping out of clipless.

Of course half clips and Power Grips are even easier to slip out of.

no confidence that I would have released from those, and a fair degree of
confidence that I would have had seriously damaged legs.

So--since then, while I've tried flip-overs, I have not been able to
stick with 'em. Clipless all the way, thanks.

Like you, I wear clip-in shoes when on a long ride, and use the platform
sides for riding around in casual shoes.

They're not carbon-stiff, but not very flexible
 either.

I'm in the market for a more flexible clip shoe with a bit more tread
for off-road excursions. The Specialized Tahoe seems close to what I
 want;
I should give them a try.

I do. I've not done the two together, but see it as a future combo.

When biking from the house, my usual jaunt along the Greenbelt runs down
along Reedy Creek (a not-so-healthy stream, lots of farmland sediment from
upstream, etc), past its confluence with the South Fork of the Holston
River, then along the river to its confluence with the North Fork. Good
smallmouth fishery at the forks. This has been on my to-do list for
awhile, but, I've usually too many things on my to-do list to be able to
get time to do both together... either run fish for a bit, or go bike for a
bit

There are some trout streams up along the Creeper Trail; it's a load up
the bikes and drive to the trail to get there, and could then fish the
streams alongside the trail, except, it's across the state line (and they
double the cost of the licenses :/ ). I do fish some other in-state trout
streams, but they're not as bike-friendly

[RBW] Re: Water Bottles Tested and Rated

2014-08-13 Thread Jack K
RBW'ers,

I added a CamelBak Podium to an order from Wiggle in the UK last winter and
that has become my favorite bottle. I particularly like that the screw-on
cap has a flow lock off setting, so the bottle can be transported with
little or no chance of leakage. This bottle from the UK is clear and
unmarked, other than a tasteful enough Camelak running around the bottle
just under the cap. I've looked (and looked) at LBS's and online shops in
the US to get a second bottle like that one, but all I can find are ones
splashed with various garish graphics. Anyone know of a US source for the
plain Podium?

That article seems to be about general purpose water bottles, like
something you'd carry around during the day to sip from. Kleen Kanteen is a
great bottle for that, but on the bike I'm sticking with the Podium.

Cheers!

Pereira:

They are wider than the Jitenshas and work a little better for me.

[RBW] Re: Cambium Test. Stainless Steel Spoke Corrosion? 7-speed Hubs?

2014-08-13 Thread David Banzer
That was kind of my point. For leather saddles, Brooks already has tooling
and machinery in place.
For the new Cambium's, they're paying a subcontractor to make a new saddle
model, needing new tooling and machinery. No matter who is making it, new
products require initial investment to produce, making the Cambium's
potentially more expensive to make (and subsequently cost to Brooks) than
Brooks' leather models.

Just for an alternative viewpoint: My very brief experiment with clipless

total agony. I move my feet around the on the pedalsa lot. My

My experience too. Clipless gives me middle of sole and ankle problems.

I used to use straps but switched to half clips when Bruce Gordon started

BG Half Clips and White Industry pedals are the pinnacle for me. Although
if you can find a good set of mid - '80s Campy Records, they match well

[RBW] Shipping, Knickers, and Newbaums. Some observation.

2014-08-13 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've received a couple items in the mail this week and wanted to give some
quick feedback.

The recent thread on knickers and subsequent endorsements of the Swrve
offerings had me checking them out. I noticed they had some closeouts and
snagged a pair of the cotton regular fits in grey. They suggested to size
up one which I did. I am pleased to say they fit really well out of the
package, and hopefully will not distort too much in the wash. The fit is
what I would call trim, but comfortable. The cotton has a pre washed feel,
and a good deal of stretch which is great on the bike. Front pockets are
normal jeans style with the back being zippered and one small hip pocket
that's roughly cell phone sized. The legs fall just below my knees and the
opening is neither floppy nor tight. Belt loops are good, though just a bit
on the small side. A webbing type belt would work great, but a normal
leather one would not fit. Not a big concern as I prefer fabric belts on
the bike, which I will need for these. One of the loops is reflective which
is cool. Another little thing I noticed was the metal zipper pulls on the
back pockets add a little jingle to your rear. Plus. The only thing
negative I could note would be the short rise of the back. If I wear these
without a belt, or long shirt, there will be some asskrak sported.

I also placed an order for some replacement Hilsen decals and tacked on
some Newbaums maroon bar tape. My decals are backordered for a couple
weeks, but had the bar tape sent out as I wanted it for a bike I planned to
ride over last weekend. Unfortunately the tape didnt arrive till Monday.
Regardless I just wanted chime in on the Newbaums, and specifically the
Maroon. DANG it's a nice color. I'm of the opinion it will class up any
ride and give that extra panache. I would also like to add an honorable
mention to the purple. Very regal indeed. I have typically been a black,
white, or natural cork kinda guy...things are getting colorful now.

And lastly, shipping. I have been noticing a distinct shift upward in
pricing with our UPS shipments at work, but passed it off as we cut back on
our account. The problem was, with the increased cost came seemingly
increased shipping times. These two orders I received seemed really out of
whack. I opted for the direct UPS delivery for my Riv order, which came to
ten bucks for two rolls of tape in a small envelope. Took from last
Tuesday, till this past Monday. Then the Swrve order was eight bucks, large
envelope priority USPS, shipped Monday, arrived Wednesday. I dont ever
squabble shipping, as it's a genuine cost to the seller, and it's what I do
often at work and see the amounts. I have never really had any big issues
with any carrier, but wow, USPS sure is outdoing UPS for cost and delivery
times. I set up an account with USPS for the sole purpose of shipping the
ACW goods, and have been extremely happy with the results so far. Curious
if this is just an anomaly, or if you've noticed it too?

[RBW] Attn: Big mileage riders

2014-08-13 Thread dougP
The Blug has some interesting photos of a Schwalbe Marathon that went
14,000 miles. There's no tread left on the center, so it pretty much
earned its keep a while back, IMHO. BUT, at the end of story, Rivendell
says Anybody who buys a Marathon Plus from us and rides it 14,000 miles
gets a free replacement. Save those proofs-of-purchase!

I don't doubt the mileage. I got 11,000 miles out of a Supreme on the
front on my Atlantis. It looked better than the tire in the photo when I
changed it. I don't try to squeeze the last mile out of my tires,
especially the front. Tire life is highly variable, depending on width,
load such as rider weight use, nice pavement vs off-road, etc.

So if you pile on the miles, now you know the best source for tires.

A tale of two rivies, two large rivies. One is set up as a sport touring

1. 26 pounds. Custom frame, 65cm. Set up with XTR M900 drive train and

Noodles. Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. Mostly as seen here:

2. 41 pounds. Bombadil with parallel top tubes, 60cm. Phil Wood hubs.
Suntour XC Pro drive train and brakes. Bosco bullmoose bars. Nitto lugged
post. Big Apples. Rear Nitto big rack. Front Platrack with basket. Steel

 Would be informative to know:

 (Including fenders/bottlecages/racks/lights/bells is ok since
dismantle-ization would be unfair to expect of a complete build. But no
 bags/bottles on board, please).
 4. Build list, if you feel up to all that typing. Would be fun to see what
everyone is hanging on their Rivs anyway. But that is a lot to ask and not
 expected.

I would start, but I have to go home and weight the bikes first.
So I will try to report back soon with my Sam and Bleriot weights.

And if you guys feel strongly about this being inappropriate for

If USPS had to operate in the black instead of being subsidized through
nearly free loans (totaling $10 billion a few years ago) they would cost
more and/or deliver slower. As it is, they get a lot of things wrong, but
we keep using them because we understand the cost differential with other
carriers.

[RBW] Re: Shipping, Knickers, and Newbaums. Some observation.

2014-08-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
Newbaums maroon and purple are both really nice colors, I agree. I'd
recommend you get in the habit of stocking up on cloth tape like Newbaums.
Keep it in the same box as the shellac and the $0.29 brushes and the hemp
twine. Buy various colors that catch your eye at the LBS, and put them in
the box. Then, when you need to wrap a bar, shop from your internal
inventory. Making Jenny or Pineapple Bob find an envelope for two rolls of
Newbaums is losing money for Rivendell, plus it's a bummer for you to have
to pay a lot of money for slow shipping. Nobody is happy in that
situation.

The thing that's impossible to ship nowadays is a handlebar. Somebody
sells you a used Noodle for $40, and then it's $25 to ship it. Ouch!
 Bosco Bullmoose? fuggeddaboudit.

Maybe that stocking up technique is just me because I also roll into
Jitensha Studio from time to time and always pick up fun Viva cloth tape in
colors that Newbaums doesn't have.

What is happening is:
When I go to post, sometimes the posting window loads with a gray colored
cursor hash mark in the upper left corner of the text window. If I type
something, then hit Post, I get the error message, and it don't post.

But if, before posting, I go: Return, Return, backspace, backspace,
backspace. It erases the gray hashmark, and then it will accept and post
whatever I type.

Surely you mean braze-ons. Brazing is a way of joining metal; braising
is a combination-cooking method that uses both moist and dry heats:
typically, the food is first seared at a high temperature, then finished
in a covered pot at a lower temperature while sitting in some (variable)
amount of liquid (which may also add flavor).

Re: [RBW] Re: Shipping, Knickers, and Newbaums. Some observation.

2014-08-13 Thread Doug Litchfield
I also use USPS as much as possible.
From paying ebay and other remote purchases when possible with Postal Money
orders to shipping my own sales almost exclusively with them.
And my regular mail carrier will sometimes drop packages off earlier than
normal on his route...
I thought you might like these early.
He knows it's *the* part I'm waiting for to finish/start/tweak a build!
Can't beat it.
The folks I have dealt with are good people...unfortunately treated poorly;

Not e-mail's steady encroachment on snail mail's territory, not a
prolonged economic downturn or the growing popularity of corporate shipping
services, but government-mandated payments to pre-fund health care benefits
for postal retirees -- *75 years into the future*.

I also prefer USPS, the shipping is just a fast nowadays, you get tracking

Living in an urban multi-family building without a doorman, USPS is the
only carrier that delivers when I am not there (they have special keys that
open the common door and drop the box in front of my apartment door).

UPS means I have to arrange deliveries at work. Maybe I am old fashioned
but I always feel weird getting personal items at work.

For a unique shipper like Riv, it is tolerable. If the UPS only vendor
has a real competitor that ships USPS I always go with the USPS.

[RBW] new Brooks C-17

2014-08-13 Thread Don Compton
Tomorrow will be my first 40 mile on my new C-17. Wish me luck. I just
can't ride my B-17s anymore. The hump that develops after miles of breakin
causes me some problems and , after not riding a B-17 for 3 months, I tried
one more time. The same crotch problems came back. Hopefully the C-17 will
work out.
I have shortish femurs and the saddles that I am using on my other bikes
will not work on my Roadeo ( even with a no setback seatpost).

Will be interesting to hear how this works out! Hopefully will meet all
your needs. Have you ever tried Swift? They're flat-topped like a B17, but
a touch narrower. If the C17 doesn't work out, check one out.

Re: [RBW] new Brooks C-17

2014-08-13 Thread Don Compton
Thanks for your reply. The C-17 seems a little narrower. I have only ridden
it around the block. Tomorrow I am going to ride a 40 mile ride out off
Ione,Ca. I think that if the saddle seems ok on that ride, I may be good to
go. I don't see any breakin in the saddle.

[RBW] New build: Soma GR, and a question

2014-08-13 Thread Jim Bronson
Well Grant would probably not approve of the amount of seat post showing,
but, it seems to work pretty good for me, and I am comfortable riding it.
Maybe would like a tad more elevation to the stem, but in practice riding
it around I don't notice.

https://www.flickr.com/gp/23646261@N03/8p64BN/

The question I have is, is that FD going to work for me? I am thinking no,
because the loop around the post halves the amount of cable pull available
to the front shifter. I can't get it to move nearly as much as I need.
The specs said top pull or bottom pull, but really, I think it would be
better with top pull. Too bad. I bought a used IRD Alpina the other day,
I'm going to use that on the Rivendell and try the FD on the Rivendell on
my Soma GR.

[RBW] Un-racer compact crankset question.

2014-08-13 Thread lungimsam
Where are you supposed to cruise on your front rings and rear cassette if
you have a cc? In the big ring while in the middle of the cassette?

If so, then according to the Sheldon calculator, based on my cruising area
of my XD2 triple/9-speed cassette setup's gear inches, I would need a 30/42
compact crankset to cruise in the middle area of the big ring of a cc and
then use the 30 ring for me little gears. Staying in the big one would
minimize front shifting, too. I don't need more than 100 inches, so 42 x 11
would be fine as my big inches combo. I don't think I would spin out of it.

Is this how I should do it? Just wundrin' if I ever want to give it a try.
I had a used bike once with a 34-50/ 12-28 (I think) that didn't work well
because I had to live on the small ring, and still didn't have anything
small enough for the steep stuff.

Where do you cruise in your cc setup?
