Thanks thread!
Just in time, sounds like.

VP has silver Vice pedals. I just received mine direct from them (for a
warrantee issue with pedals that were creaky out the box -- amazing
customer service by the way!). The new pair is as silent as my first (and
highly abused) pair. Of course my first pair now looks more silver than
grey, considering the abuse it's received at the hands of roots and rocks.

[RBW] For sale: 58cm 650b Homer

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-TE3_dVDXr4Q/VCxt4jlmoHI/AF4/X0I807kTMEQ/s1600/homer_side.jpg
It's had a great run since I built it up two years ago, but I need to
downsize the bike collection dramatically, and I have an older,
rack-capable mountain bike as well.

Toyo-built 58cm 650b frame (fancy fork rake, 3 cage mounts)
Rich-built wheels: 32h Synergy/LX rear, 32h Synergy/Shimano DH-3N80 dynohub
front
Grand Bois Lierre 650x38b tires
Tektro R559 brakes
Shimano Tiagra brake levers
Sugino XD2 46/36/24 crankset
Shimano Dura-Ace 9sp barend shifters
IRD Alpina-D front derailleur
Shimano LX T661 rear derailleur
Shimano XT 11-36 9sp cassette
Nitto 8cm DirtDrop stem
Nitto Moustache handlebar
Nitto Crystal Fellow seatpost
Nitto Mark's Rack with medium Wald basket
RackTime TourIt rear rack
SKS Longboard P45 fenders (cream)
Shimano BB, Tange headset

Also included:
Schmidt Edelux and B+M Toplight Line Brake Plus dynamo lights
Choice of saddle: WTB Volt, Selle An-atomica, Brooks Honey B17
King Cage
Pletscher single-leg kickstand
Fender-mount taillight
Velcro spoke reflectors
MKS RMX pedals
Hammer-strike bell
New rolls of orange cloth handlebar tape (for those who prefer to wrap
their own)

I'm not really sure if this is acceptable for the list, but I was initially
hoping to look for offers to see which way the winds are blowing for
second-hand Rivendells.

[RBW] Re: DIY Saddlebag Quick-Release

2014-10-02 Thread jar351
For those who asked, here's what the attachment part looks like:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_LfrF0BfykU/VCxC4ADtbOI/B5k/A0T7a8HZv34/s1600/IMG_5466.jpg

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-LP-fQ_BcmQg/VCxDCIu9QjI/B5s/-1YKfAU3Igc/s1600/IMG_5468.jpg

It's really straightforward, just a metal sandwich. I tapped the back plate
for the 5mm screws, but I could just as well have used nuts. I really just
wanted an excuse to buy the tap, but of course it also makes installation a
bit easier. As you can see from the first shot, there's a bit of bowing
going on in the plates because I probably tightened the screws down a bit
more than I had too. I expect that in time the plates may bend a bit more
and thus loosen but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. In truth, I'm
looking forward to working out the kinks and improving the design.

Thanks to all who gave a thumbs up :)

I was pretty psyched when I bought a used Saddlesack bag from a fellow

of my very little money on bike stuff--for the record, she's right--and
besides that, we live in Oakland. So perhaps understandably she responded
to my boyish excitement with a look that said, you *know* that's way too
f-ing fancy and it's *going* to get stolen. I retorted that I planned to
attach it to my bike with a piece of bike chain and a crap load of zip
ties, but still she was unfazed. Those things would not stop a thief. As
much as I hated to admit it she was right. That's when I decided to the
opposite tack: make the bag super *easy* to detach and carry. I know that
Riv sells a Nitto-made doohickey for just such a purpose, but come on,
$100? That's almost as much as I paid for the friggin bag.

Anyhow, that's how I ended up making this thing:

 https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-pz2jSRSID5M/VCdBEfiAUWI/B5E/Sch1951fkR4/s1600/IMG_5445.jpg
For the record, yes, I blatantly copied the Nitto design as much as
possible, and took some cues from another DIYer who had made the same kind
of thing and posted it on Flickr. I couldn't figure out the attachment
mechanism of the Nitto mount from the photos on the Riv site, so I just
made a back plate and sandwiched the saddle rails between it and the main
plate that you see in the photo. Seems to work well enough so far.

The body of the mount I made from aluminum flat bar, so I'm sure it's not
as durable as the Nitto one, which I assume is steel, but how strong does
this thing need to be? The tube that the QR skewer goes through is just
1/2-inch PVC but I decided to wrap it in bar tape to avoid the toilet paper
 dispenser look.

I made this in a few hours with no power tools except an ancient
BlackDecker drill and if you don't count the cost of the drill bits and
tap (which I wanted to have anyway), the whole mount cost me about $15 to
make. Most of that was the cost of the aluminum flat bar, of which I have
plenty leftover for other projects. (I already had the QR skewer from I
don't know where.) Anyway, it was a fun project, not just about saving a
 little dough.

Depending on the pedal you choose and the shoe you wear when riding, there
will be anywhere from no to a little locking.

I find the best combination for me to give me a non-slip surface and avoid
locking is to wear a converse-style shoe (I'm a huge fan of the Chrome
Kursk) and use a wide, flat BMX pedal. One that takes screw-in pins offers
more grip than one without. VP and Wellgo offer good models.

Re: [RBW] DIY Saddlebag Quick-Release

2014-10-02 Thread jar351
Andrew, would you mind elaborating a bit about why you chose panniers over
saddlebags? I'm actually moving in the other direction if anything. I've
always used panniers (and probably will continue to do so for commuting)
but I've also had a Carradice saddlebag on my bike for the past year or so
and I've loved the convenience of having it always on there, ready to hold
my u-locks, golf discs, snacks, etc. when I'm packing light for a
recreational trip. Thigh rub has never been an issue. That being the case,
I'm eager to try a larger saddlebag on this latest build of mine.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 2:12:05 AM UTC-7, Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
wrote:

I really want to love saddlebags. I love the concept, I've owned many, and

But for me, saddlebags don't work well.

So now I use a rack and panniers. Not so English-classy, but they do the
 job.

That said, that is a way prettier mount than most I've seen, and it looks
 well-made.

2014-10-02 Thread Mike K.
Hi gang,
Well, I have some decision-making to do involving current bike arrangement.
I have two bikes, but need to get rid of one to make room for a new one. I
am getting a Surly Cross Check (would spring for a Sam, but unfortunately,
can't afford it, now matter how I slice the pie).

My current bikes are both Centurions. One is an Accordo RS set up as a
single speed, Tange Infinity tubing. The other is a Dave Scott Master,
14-speed with Shimano 600 group and Champion 1 tubing.

I have been thinking about just keeping the Dave Scott as is for group
riding. I have a Brooks on it and could get a small saddle bag for tools, a
small jacket, patch kit, etc. BUT, the top tube has a small dent in it. I
am probably like the 4th or 5th owner, if not further down the line. If it
was a perfect frame I probably wouldn't even consider discontinuing it in
my line up.

The other option is to put the Shimano 600 group on the Accordo and use
that as my roadie, then sell all the single speed parts off of it to help
buy the Surly and a few parts I still need. Only problem with that is I
would have the other frame to sell, and I doubt it would sell as a
standalone frame/fork with a dented top tube. Otherwise, that Dave Scott is
responsive and really fun to ride. I had the Accordo set up as a road bike
and it just didn't have the zip of it's big brother. The Accordo is a bit
better looking, though, too. That sweet red paint job with white head tube
and seat tube. The Dave Scott is a white with the funny lightning-storm
graphics on the fork.

I like the Accordo a lot, and it has rear braze on for a rack, as well as a
spot for a frame pump (Zefal #4 on the way!), but those would likely go on
the Cross Check anyway.

I guess in the end, either one would leave me with a road bike with the
parts I already have. I'm just sort of looking for a few more factors to
consider to help me make the decision.

Thanks, all.

Re: [RBW] Should it stay or should it go?

2014-10-02 Thread Aaron Young
Hi Mike,

I don't know if I can help in making your decision, but I DO have a couple
thoughts.

After writing this I figured a summary might be helpful. :) Here's the
short version: 1. Ride the snot out of that Dave Scott regardless if the
tube is bent or not (in rhyme even!). 2. Skip the cross check and
save, save, save for a Sam H (no rhyme).

First, a dented top tube isn't necessarily an end of life issue for a good
steel bike. I still ride (and consider an all-time favorite type bike) a
1985 Trek 620 that was in an accident before I bought it. Both the down and
top tubes are bent downward from the impact of the front wheel hitting
something (a dog was the story I was told). I didn't notice the dents
before buying it and was dismayed to say the least when I finally noticed
the bent tubes while cleaning it up at home. Since the bike was bent I
felt fine riding it year round including through four upstate NY winters
with salty roads. If it weren't bent I would likely have babied it and not
ridden it as much. So, just ride that Dave Scott if you like the way it
fits and rolls. Don't worry about the dent. Put a top tube protector over
it so you forget about it. But inspect it only occasionally to make sure
it's not getting worse or leading to tube fatigue and failure.

As for the Cross Check vs Sam H dilemma, is it possible to hold off on that
new bike purchase while you save enough to get a Sam? The Cross check is a
great bike, but it's a different bike than a Sam in a lot of ways. I
bought my Sam used off this list for a very reasonable price. Maybe wait
for one to pop up on the list? In any case, Be patient and save for what
you really want. You will be happier in the long term.

Just my opinions at no charge. Of course they are worth just about what you
paid for them. :)

Good luck,
Aaron Young

This was literally installed in the garage and not ridden. I put it back in the

Re: [RBW] Should it stay or should it go?

2014-10-02 Thread Mike K.
Aaron,
I don't have much time to save. I have just about enough in the Paypal
account to buy the CC frame right now, and all the parts I need sitting at
home that I took off my old Cannondale that was too small for me.

I could put more money into a Sam, but we're saving to buy our first house
in the spring, so I don't want to put extra money into a bike that could go
to the down payment. You know? I would love the Sam, and hope to get one in
the future. I was thinking I could get the Surly now, use it for a few
years, then when I have the cash for the Sam (any leftovers from Riv or one
off the list), get the Sam and sell the Cross Check. I hear what you're
saying about them being different bikes, and I totally agree, but as far as
doing what I'm looking for, the CC works. It even takes canti brakes, which
I would prefer over sidepull. To be totally honest, I would rather have the
Hunq than the Sam, especially if I have the Centurion as a road bike, so
that prolongs the saving period due to the extra cost.

I was smitten with the Hunq from the first time I saw it, maybe it's the
head badge, who knows, but that's the ultimate bike for me. For now,
though, I need something that can take a load, do day trips, handle
camping, etc., and the Cross Check certainly can do all that.

I like the Accordo a lot, and it has rear braze on for a rack, as well as
a spot for a frame pump (Zefal #4 on the way!), but those would likely go
 on the Cross Check anyway.

I guess in the end, either one would leave me with a road bike with the
parts I already have. I'm just sort of looking for a few more factors to
consider to help me make the decision.

 Thanks, all.

I went with red loctite. The grip kings really need spikes; they start out

[RBW] Re: Sackville Bar Sack review needed please.

2014-10-02 Thread lungimsam
*Update about Sackville bar sack:*
I ordered the bag and the NITTO F-15 rack.

Thanks for the info everyone. Between your comments and the rivsite reviews
on the bag page, it sounds like a good bag setup.
Noone said it drooped under weight. Everyone seems happy with their set up.
RJM had a long term review above, and he still loved it. Keeps out the wet
enough apparently, and I have one of those map covers to lash to it during
events. That will be much better than strapping a cue sheet to the shifter
cables, which is what I do now. Just wish RBW would have made the bag with
a cue sheet plastic on the bag lid. That looks like the only feature it
lacks. Wonder why they didn't. They thought of everything else. Glad it has
side pockets! Looking forward to ease of opening and closing with the
magnet closure. Sounds good.

I also checked into:

*Berthoud setups (I researched different online retailers):*
1. Berthoud also has a bar bag that doesn't need a rack, like the bar sack.
Uses the NITTO F-15 or their black plastic QR clamper thing. No side
pockets, but has cover plastic for cue sheet. Has elastic cords, not magnet.

2. Berthoud, whole hog, bag/front rack/decaleur setup:
*Applause goes to the Compass Cycles *for being the only site I saw that
informs you that there are straps on their Berthoud bags that can be used
for attaching bag to bars instead of needing to buy a decaleur. That would
save me 80-160 bucks or so right there to not get a decaleur at first and
see if the straps would be enough if I ever want to go the rack/bag route.
Could pony up for a decaleur later if I felt the straps weren't stable
enough. Thanks Compass Cycles for that valuable and good-hearted piece of
information.

For now, I will try the rackless bag setup and see how it goes. I hope it
works out great. I have only a fistful of seatpost on both my bikes, and
that makes for my Pendle saddle bag dragging on my back tire on one
bike (53 Bleriot) and slumping over my rear fender on t'other (52 Sam). So
a front bag sounds good to avoid that, plus I can access stuff on the go,
and get my teardrop aeroshape going on my bikes. ha ha.

[RBW] Re: Should it stay or should it go?

2014-10-02 Thread dougP
Mike:

I have a late 80s Panasonic DX-5000 that is indistinguishable from a Dave
Scott Centurion (a friend has the Centurion we compared). My Panasonic
has a dented top tube from some rough handling by a shipper. This happened
sometime back in the 90s. It has gone thousands of miles as is and I
could not detect any change. Functionally, the dent is a non-issue. As
others have pointed out, it is an issue for a buyer. It will be a question
mark and a potential buyer can always wait until another rolls along.

As to the rack issue, I had rear rack eyelets added to my Panasonic. It's
no touring bike but having the rack option is useful. Food for thought.

unfortunately, can't afford it, now matter how I slice the pie).

My current bikes are both Centurions. One is an Accordo RS set up as a
single speed, Tange Infinity tubing. The other is a Dave Scott Master,
14-speed with Shimano 600 group and Champion 1 tubing.

I have been thinking about just keeping the Dave Scott as is for group

small jacket, patch kit, etc.

It's really straightforward, just a metal sandwich. I tapped the back
plate for the 5mm screws, but I could just as well have used nuts. I really
just wanted an excuse to buy the tap, but of course it also makes
installation a bit easier. As you can see from the first shot, there's a
bit of bowing going on in the plates because I probably tightened the
screws down a bit more than I had too. I expect that in time the plates may
bend a bit more and thus loosen but I'll cross that bridge when I come to
it. In truth, I'm looking forward to working out the kinks and improving
 the design.

Thanks to all who gave a thumbs up :)

I was pretty psyched when I bought a used Saddlesack bag from a fellow

besides that, we live in Oakland. So perhaps understandably she responded
to my boyish excitement with a look that said, you *know* that's way
too f-ing fancy and it's *going* to get stolen. I retorted that I
planned to attach it to my bike with a piece of bike chain and a crap load
of zip ties, but still she was unfazed. Those things would not stop a
thief. As much as I hated to admit it she was right. That's when I decided
to the opposite tack: make the bag super *easy* to detach and carry. I
know that Riv sells a Nitto-made doohickey for just such a purpose, but
come on, $100?

That's interesting to hear about the Panasonic-Centurion connection. I

I have a friend that has a mid 80's Scwhinn Traveler that was apparently

Re: [RBW] DIY Saddlebag Quick-Release

2014-10-02 Thread Andrew Marchant-Shapiro
Moi?

Thigh rub is part of it, though I've done some long tours with a Nelson
attached and it wasn't all *that* awful. I just don't care for it. Part
of it is also that I have my saddle shoved all the way back, so the
attachment to the seatpost doesn't work very well (and I have tried a
number of inventions for dealing with that). I really like the *stylistic
*notion
of the saddlebag, it's just never felt like it was an ideal fit for me. I
also think that they tend to be costly per cubic foot compared to panniers,
though perhaps a little less these days, since Carradice is no longer the
sole source.

I've found that for small loads (and now I can handle large ones) I like
handlebar bags better. I can get into them without stopping, and there's
having a map case up front, which is a real plus in my book. Panniers
provide additional storage when needed and keep the center of gravity low,
and have the advantage that they are well-shaped for what I want to carry
in them, be it a computer, groceries, or a pair of 13B dress shoes.

Dunno. It's a matter of taste and particular use and, in the long run,
it's all good. Whatever works for each of us!

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 2:23:43 PM UTC-4, Andre Rosario wrote:

I love the concept, I've owned many,
and every few years I try again. I even invented a mount that involved a
loop secured with a Seat Sandwich, after bad luck with the SQR.

But for me, saddlebags don't work well.

So now I use a rack and panniers. Not so English-classy, but they do the
 job.

That said, that is a way prettier mount than most I've seen, and it looks
 well-made.

That's interesting to hear about the Panasonic-Centurion connection. I

I have a friend that has a mid 80's Scwhinn Traveler that was apparently
made by Panasonic, too. She calls it a Schwinasonic. Or maybe it's
Schwinnasonic? In any case, it too is a great bike just like that Dave
 Scott.

Btw, the very first bike I purchased when I began to be more serious about
riding was a Centurion Accordo. Black paint and cool/dorky 80's graphics.
 Centurions are great!

 Hi gang,
Well, I have some decision-making to do involving current bike
arrangement. I have two bikes, but need to get rid of one to make room for
a new one. I am getting a Surly Cross Check (would spring for a Sam, but
unfortunately, can't afford it, now matter how I slice the pie).

My current bikes are both Centurions. One is an Accordo RS set up as a
single speed, Tange Infinity tubing. The other is a Dave Scott Master,
14-speed with Shimano 600 group and Champion 1 tubing.

I have been thinking about just keeping the Dave Scott as is for group

I like the Accordo a lot, and it has rear braze on for a rack, as well
as a spot for a frame pump (Zefal #4 on the way!), but those would likely
go on the Cross Check anyway.

I guess in the end, either one would leave me with a road bike with the
parts I already have. I'm just sort of looking for a few more factors to
consider to help me make the decision.

 Thanks, all.

the Trek one time. It's now for sell. I also have a 85 Bridgestone which
I've been using like a cargo bike and as a bike I'll lock up in downtown
