[RBW] Re: FS/WTT New-in-the box Waterford Atlantis 56cm

2014-11-12 Thread Rob H.
Wildcat, would a NIB 54cm Soma San Marcos + cash interest you? It's the
original, icy Pearl Blue color. The SO is ~81cm. I have a PBH of 85cm and
found the 59cm too high. Are you in the Bay Area?

Oh, snap, and what am I missing for a build kit..

I have the full wheelset, I have bar/stem/brakelevers. I have brakes, front
and rear ders. I have shifters, crankset BB pedals. I have a couple Nitto
racks, a whole grip of sackville bags. I even have a good rainbow stack of
several shades of Newbaums.

I think I might need a saddle, but aside from that, I'm totally ready. I could

[RBW] FS: Nitto Campee Medium Rear Rack - Used

2014-11-12 Thread Ryan
I made a mistake in my original posting. It's actually a medium. Pictures
now include "dimensions."

Barely used Nitto Medium Rear Rack: $110

Pix: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bop/4755152183.html

Pick-up locally in Fairfax, CA or San Francisco. Cash.

Or I could ship it and you pay shipping (USPS). Paypal.

Re: [RBW] Re: Polling what's the best 650b touring tire?

2014-11-12 Thread Hugh Smitham
Bill,

Thanks for the suggestion, I have $320 ear marked for other parts namely
accessories for the wife's Betty, my Atlantis & AHH.

By all means I encourage you to take on the experiment as I'm sure a lot of
folks would appreciate the data.

The Irony to this thread is at the time I posed the question I only had the
650b AAH, it was doing duty as a fitness, off road and tour bike. Since, I
built up my 56 cm 26" Atlantis (Ol' Willy) as my off road tour bike the
question is not as urgent though still relevant.

As an experiment I do plan on acquiring the new Soma Cazadero' in 650b,
maybe put Homer back in service as a lightweight off road S240 rig?

[RBW] For Sale-58cm Atlantis Frame/Fork/Headset

2014-11-12 Thread oldmangabe

Hi everyone,

For sale is my 2005 or 2006 Rivendell Atlantis 58cm frame and fork. It is a
great frame and I have made a lot of memories with it, but after about nine
or so years of trying to convince myself it fits, I’ve finally realized
it’s just too small. I am the original owner. The bike was ridden in and
around Northern California on and off road since I bought it and the paint
is representative of this. There are quite a number of paint dings and
scrapes with the most significant being shown in the images, but the damage
is confined to the paint and is not affecting the tubes. The frame was
never crashed, and is structurally sound and in alignment.

Images can be found HERE

Geometry and specs HERE

I am located in SF. A local sale would be preferred since nobody really
likes dealing with S&H, but I will ship. Contact me off list if interested.

I am asking $1000 for the frame/fork/Ultegra headset + S&H.

Best,

Gabe

[RBW] Veterans Day Ride - Bombadil Style!

2014-11-12 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Leesburg Loop Veterans Day Ride

Bomba pics extracted below for your viewing convenience. This is the
fastest I've gone from adding a bike, to building and then taking it on a
major ride. A real credit to the frame design (and the good condition its
previous owners left it in - thanks Tom!) and many of the common sense
components that Riv champions. I'd been wanting to do the Leesburg Loop
here in the DC area for some time now. I will definitely admit that I
struggled with the distance but we had a great group together, perfect
weather and a full day to accomplish the ride so we had a great time.

The Bombadil did wonderfully, the Vee Rubber 1.95"ers proved to be an ideal
C&O Towpath tire as I'd expected, the swap to a Nitto Dirt Drop stem and
addition of interrupter levers was just what the doctor ordered as well.
On the blog post you'll also notice my XO-3 and MB-3 that were being
ridden by guests, both set up with Alba-style bars and quite Riv-ish...

I can't recommend this ride highly enough, I think next time I'd prefer to
cut it in half and make a camping night or a B&B stop in Leesburg so that I
could enjoy several of the 3 or so new breweries that have popped up
trailside along the W&OD though!

I think tire savers make a difference, no matter what width the tire. Also,
tubed or tubeless, as long as you have 50 psi in your tires, consider 2 oz

goathead flats every 2-5 miles. After Stan's, none - well, one only, before

While the full bike pic of the Betty does kinda look Atlantis green, check the
close-up of the seat tube cluster – standard Betty blue.

photos of a Betty Foy painted Atlantis green with a cream headtube. Cute!

Re: [RBW] Re: HIgh hopes on ebay

2014-11-12 Thread Tim McNamara
Any seller on eBay can sell anything for any price they can get. EBay is about
the sellers; the higher the prices that items are sold for, the more profit
eBay makes. They really have no reason to care if buyers overpay. Shop
victoriously!

The rule on eBay, as with virtually all other marketplaces, is "caveat emptor."
The buyer needs to do the research to understand what is or is not a good
price for a product. If they do not bother to do said research, then they are
fools destined to be separated from their money. Over the many years that I've
been buying on eBay, I have watched many buyers pay far more than retail for
currently available products.

For what it's worth, I have sold one item on eBay and will never sell another
item through that service. The fees are exorbitant and ultimately I ended up
losing my shirt on the item I sold largely because of what eBay charged me.
That was a "live and learn" experience. Everybody's got to have a few of those
in life.

As far as the specific seller is concerned, I haven't looked at his auctions
and don't directly have a whole lot to say. I have found some people in the
"vintage bike component of market" too often over estimate the value of their
items. I remember 10 or 15 years ago when vintage Campagnolo components were
going for stupid prices, sometimes far higher than they are now on eBay. One
sees the same sort of thing- basically "gouge the rubes-" among some antique
dealers. Thing is you don't have to buy.

I have also had good experiences with some of the vintage bike parts sellers;
locally there was a guy named John Barron with whom I had a number of good
experiences- not only decent prices but he even delivered for free since I
lived a mile from his day job. John put a lot of work into locating parts,
sometimes even traveling out of the country to find them. I doubt he made a lot
of profit off of this. Of course there was that time he crashed me at the
velodrome and I separated my shoulder...

(it wasn't really his fault, I just put that in there for dramatic effect)

2014-11-12 Thread Hugh Smitham
I don't have a lot of time at the moment to say what I'd like to say about
whether or not to let Mr. PB*bikes make a statement on this thread, so
simply I think not. Ebay would be the forum for that.

It's his business model that's his right more power to him. Folk who really
need that item(s) and don't have a budget or what ever it's also their
right to spend their money as they see fit. I do have a budget and I would
seriously question my sanity if I felt so compelled that I needed that item
at an inflated price.

I think everyone has been polite. The posting was meant as a can you
believe what he's asking for that!!

In the end I of course will abide by Jim's decision.

RE: [RBW] Re: HIgh hopes on ebay

I trust Jim’s judgment. And, generally, the restraint of the group.

Ok...

Everybody take a breath.

Thanks.

I'm kind of conflicted on this thread. I've been working on a project which
finished up this morning, so I'm probably just worn out and grumpy enough to
ask just why this is a RBW related topic.

On the other hand, the actual auctioneer has contacted me directly asking if he
could post a response, which is currently in the moderation queue. It's kind
of blunt in places, but I'm guessing that it generally reflects his nature. He
does talk about how he runs his business.

I've got another project starting this afternoon, which means I can't really
micro-manage the responses - which I will say have shown reasonable restraint
so far. I'm wondering whether the response will simply be the gasoline which
creates a fairly dramatic fireball.

Like I say, I'm kind of conflicted.

I've followed through the comments so far, and there are many folks who think
it's just head-shaking funny. The "Sucker Born Every Minute" camp. That's
pretty much where I am, having served many years in the retail trenches in a
fairly affluent neck of the woods, I've seen people peel off bills or crack a
credit card for some reasonable ridiculous items, just because they were the
most expensive. As they say, you don't buy a Rolex just because you want to
know what time it is.

Then there are a few folks who have used stronger descriptions. And that is
what worries me.

I'll probably think on this while I have lunch, but when I come back, I'm
leaning towards just letting the fellow make a few public statements. After
all, we did start this topic of discussion. I would probably keep him
moderated, so responses would not be instant due to the queue delay.

I guess the end result will simply be killing this thread now or passing his
comment through with the hope that we find our better selves and pause a moment
before responding. And of course, if it all devolves, that will still mean
killing the thread.

If you have some thoughts, share them here.

See you in an hour or so!

I'm looking at the 55cm and I'm sure it is very close to the 56. Close enough to not matter whatsoever. Re: [RBW] HIgh hopes on ebay

2014-11-12 Thread A. Collins
Seller has this at the top of his eBay listing,

"Here, i have no idea of the age, when Nitto started production, There are
date codes on the vintage trek site, please stop insulting and calling me a
fraud because of the use of the word Vintage. if you have something to
add, please by all means , message me with the facts "

And yes I skip over his listings but there are times when I need a
particular thing and I want it to be just so and I pay for it when I find
it because I know it will be a long hard wait if I pass it over and I don't
have any sort of uber Amex card to fulfill. I agree, that stem could be
had readily for a lot less than he's asking. The good and the bad of eBay,
you can find things you're looking for, sometimes they're more than you
want to pay.

Speaking of which, I'm looking for a Campagnolo front track hub 32 h large
flange in reasonable condition. I'm about to give up and pay more for one
than I really want to. Fronts seem harder to find than rears for some
reason. Ken Wallace had a very nice Dura Ace laced to a French tubular rim
at the Tucson swap 2 weeks ago. The price was very right but I didn't need
another rear to try and match. Asa

I was working in Colorado this last summer and stopped into Pro's Closet.
It is a clean little set up with tons of parts gleaned from ex-pros and the

fringe of Boulder. Curiously, Boulder Bicycle and Mike Kone are in the same
complex so it can make a nice trip chain.

Yes, the capacity is large fully expanded outward (behind , not down) , but
at it's smallest it's still got good capacity but is very very stable , no

Anyone have a nitto bullmoose rivendell version you can spare? I'd like to

I’ll open myself to mocking by admitting that I have, in fact, sold a plastic
bicycle water bottle on eBay for $100. However, this was a very rare, mint
condition bottle from the 1980s, still in the original packaging and printed
with the Colnago name and logo. The combination of those factors led a very
motivated buyer who was, I believe, doing a period-correct restoration of a
Colnago, to pay that much.

I’ve sold other bottles from my collection of NOS 1980s bottles for amounts
ranging from $20 to $50. The price is highly related to the desirability of the
trademark on the bottle. Interesting that most of the buyers for items like
this come from overseas. I’ve shipped bottles to the Philippines, Japan, and
China. Japan, in particular, is home to a large number of bicycle collectors
who are particularly interested in restoring Italian bikes from the “golden
age” of European racing.

I'm not sure what happened to that sliced tire could be generalized to
"conditions." I was on a ride with my friend Holly when she got a
similar cut. She'd just ridden over a box cutter laying on the side of
the road, sharp side up. Sliced right through it. Who knows what
caused the cut we saw the photo of? It's not the sort of thing that
ordinary roadside conditions are likely to cause, unless your roadsides
are paved with broken bottles, tin cans with the lid attached, or
discarded box cutters. And you could ride for over 40 years and not
encounter a box cutter like the one Holly rode over.

[RBW] Re: Brisk November Ride

2014-11-12 Thread George Schick
Patrick - I recall trying something like a bag between by sock and my shoe
some 40 years ago thinking it would isolate the wind and cold from the
skin. Your test might wind up differently, but in my case I wound up
freezing my feet worse than if I'd had on just plain socks; the plastic
keeps the sweat from evaporating and it builds up inside the sock after
which the the wind cools it down even more quickly than without. Having
worked in an outdoor service type of job for a while after that I learned
that the only effective way I could keep my feet warm was to wear regular
socks and work boots and then a rubber overboot on top of everything. So
nowadays when I ride in Winter I just wear socks and running shoes and then
these over the shoes:
 http://www.gemplers.com/product/G31100/Servus-PVC-Overboots?icid=Recent_Prod_1

They're wide and sort of clumsy and you can forget about using anything but
platform pedals w/o clips or straps, but they work like a champ.

Re: [RBW] Re: Is the Bleriot/Honjos/ Hetres clearance I have not enough?

2014-11-12 Thread Jan Heine
Compass tires have about the same tread thickness as the Grand Bois for the
700C models, and a bit thinner tread that the (somewhat excessively thick)
Grand Bois 650B models. In my experience, thicker tread doesn't really
improve flat resistance, at least in the range we are looking at. (Very
thin treads do flat more easily, and very, very thick treads may offer
extra protection.)

Generally speaking, wider tires that run at lower pressures have far fewer
flats than narrower tires that run at higher pressures. My friend Ryan used
to have a flat every other ride on his 700C x 25 mm tires. When he got a
new bike with Hetres, and more recently, Babyshoe Pass tires, he gets a
handful of flats a year – and he rides a lot.

Flat frequency depends on many factors. The biggest one is where you ride,
both in terms of the roads you use and where you position yourself on the
road. If you ride on shoulders of busy highways, you'll get many flats from
all the debris that accumulates there. The same applies if you hug the curb
when riding in the city. You get far fewer flats on small backroads, and if
you ride further from the curb in the city.

If you mostly ride in the travel lane of cars, you'll get few flats,
because the cars "sweep" the roadway clear of debris. (The debris gets
flung in the air and lands randomly all over the place. The debris that
lands outside the travel lane remains there, whereas the debris in the
travel lane gets flung in the air again by the next car, until all debris
has landed outside the travel lane.)

That is why I don't get flats touring on little backroads. And I get few
flats in the city, since I ride at least 3 feet from the curb. I wrote more
about that in this blog post:

Re: [RBW] Re: Brisk November Ride

2014-11-12 Thread cyclotourist
Ahhh, here's what I really wanted to find:

If you scroll down you'll see Anton's very clever basket attachment.
I've wanted to pull this off for a while, but haven't quite got around to
it...

She loves her basket! It's a Peterboro, and really nice. I'm not a huge fan
of the attachment system, and toy with the idea of changing it around some.

Re: [RBW] Alternatives to MUSA pants and knickers?

2014-11-12 Thread Steven Frederick
I just bought a pair of those a month or so ago--they're not bad. Fit
pretty true to size, pretty well made. The elastic drawstring in the cuffs
is a little wonky but I haven't played with it much...

My daughters loved their baskets like your wife has, David. Encourage your
wife to use a different system for carrying things upfront if she gets the
urge to go bikepacking. My lassies had to give up their baskets for bird
nests.
