[RBW] Re: sheared off crank bolt

2015-08-07 Thread Ron Mc
You should have no problem removing the bolt shank with an easy-out. Once
the head is broken off the bolt, all tightening strain in the threads is
relaxed. All that's left is the friction. You may even be able to remove
it simply using a sharp drill bit and gently running the drill motor in
reverse to spin out the broken shank as you press inward.

[RBW] Best Riv for rear child seat?

2015-08-07 Thread Toby Whitfield
Cheviot.

If you are mounting the seat on the rear, the lower top tube is key so that you
can mout the bicycle comfortably. My city bike is a sloping, but not low, top
tube and it is a pain to mount with the seat in the rear, with that weight up
high and not being able to swing my leg over the back of the bike.

You can get front mounted seats, but the weight limit tends to be significantly
lower. Good for the under 2 set.

On another note, if you don't have a seat yet, I am using the Yepp Maxi
Easyfit, and it is great, if a bit expensive.

You have to know what you are looking for first .

1. What of grade of wool ? You can get "merino" grade to just "wool"
that are downright harsh .
2. Exact size you are looking for. Queen/King/etc is not enough to know as
every manufacturer varies on what that is.
3. color/pattern and such
4. machine wash or dry clean only ?

All that said , Faribault Mills (google spell check does not even
recognize Faribault, it's a City in MN for goodness sake!) has a huge
selection also

I would also recommend checking out kid trailers. My kids have grown up riding

the trailer. I have a burley which has been good.

But if you are doing urban riding I would say stick with the rear mounted which
are pretty universally fitting. A cheviot with a lower top tube would work
since you will be unable to kick your leg over the back.

MacAusland's lap blankets are a fave of mine. I have two, one from the mill
itself, another from a sheep farm near Charlottesville, VA (Juniper Moon
farm). I even use them in the hot humid summers here.

Juniper Moon farm blankets are in limited supply, but MacAusland has a
direct site (http://www.macauslandswoollenmills.com/products.html).

If you aren't worried about money and want a MUSA option, you could get a
Swan's Island blanket. Not cheap, but their blankets are woven by local
weavers and the wool is all from sheep on Swan's Island off Maine.

Re: [RBW] Best Riv for rear child seat?

2015-08-07 Thread Tim Gavin
The long chainstays of the Cheviot or Clem (and upcoming mystery bike?)
make them the best candidates for a rear-mounted child seat. You want the
seat as forward as possible to help the weight distribution, but as
rearward as required to make room for your and your child's body.

The low tube, mixte-esque design of the Cheviot or Clementine make it
easier to straddle the bike, as others have noted.

The Cheviot and Clem/Clementine are also among the stronger Riv frames, and
are easy to mount accessories to.

Yes, I second MacAusland's! I have one of those as well.

If you want a super dense wool (heavy, weight not warmth), then the
Pendleton or Filson is what you want. If you want a looser, (lighter)
scratchier blanket, then the others are good.

Re: [RBW] Best Riv for rear child seat?

2015-08-07 Thread Dan McNamara
I used a front seat on the Bombadil with Bosco bars until we hit the weight
limit for the seat. The front seat was great - I could talk to her easily while
riding.

For the rear I initially put a Racktime Tourit rack on the Bomba but getting my
leg over the TT and keeping everything upright was annoying. Went with a
Cheviot instead. Much better for mounting the bike. Longer chain stays are a
plus for keeping the bike stable with a 35lb load on the rear. Also went for
Albastache bars for a less upright riding position which is an improvement over
the Bosco setup.

We do have a Burley trailer but she much prefers riding on the bike to sitting
in the trailer.

The rear seat is a Yepp Maxi.

What Ron said. I do a lot of work on old motorcycles and having bolt heads
shear off, snap off, or just generally destroy themselves is an everyday
occurrence it seams. There are a few tricks for getting them out. An
eazy-out is the best - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMrDYJvY0Ts

If not, you can also get drill bits that are made in a reverse manner, so
when you spin the drill to unscrew it, the bit will bit into the leftover
bolt, if that makes sense.

Re: [RBW] FS - 56cm Sam Hillborne frameset

2015-08-07 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Richard,

I went to the "newer" 55cm. While the 56cm's TT was a bit long, I used it 4
years without much of a problem. But, the new additional fork eyelets, a few
cosmetic changes and the black & cream color pushed me over the edge. The
change from double TT to single was a risk, since I did not want shimmy or
handling problems with 4 panniers in the mountains. But, loading the bike and
taking it on a couple local day rides makes me think the stability I got with
the first Sam was more the 36-hole rims that original came with the bike. I
moved most of the componets to the new bike.

Sizing a Sam is always tricky, so I relied on Riv's advice before making the
purchase. Of course, your choice of tire width can make a huge difference in
standover, too. My PBH is 863 and I run 38mm Vittoria Hyper Randonneuers on
this bike. The one cm difference is noticeable, but not great.

I did hate to give up the cantilever brakes, though, so spent the money to get
Paul Racers for the new Sam. They work well.

Sincerely,

Paul Germain
Midlothian, Va.

[RBW] Re: What's in your garage?

2015-08-07 Thread Toby Whitfield
60cm Betty Foy - for my wife. Still working on it - got it as a web special
in fall 2014, but toddler + renovation + job + pregnancy has pushed it down
the priority list.
25" 1983 Trek 620 - 650B conversion bike. Still working on it - see list of
alternative priorities above!

58cm Cannondale XS800 - 2001/2 model cyclocross bike with front headshock
suspension. Has its charms, but I think it will be taken out of rotation
once I get the Trek settled in. Used to ride in NY, Montreal, touring in
France, fastish but rambling rides.

1960s/70s Torpado. Cheap Italian lugged steel road bike I bought for $70
when I lived in Montreal and was volunteering at a bike co-op from a guy
who was not interested in dealing with the tubulars. Set up as a fixed gear
road bike. I really like it - it has pretty, ornate chromed lugs, gas pipe
tubes, is beat up a bit, but it works well for what it is, fits me ok, and
was the right price. Still have the Campag Valentino that came off of it
kicking around in a box.

Civia Twin Cities - my urban bike. It has some serious drawbacks - the twin
skinny top tubes make the rear end wiggle all over the place with a rear
load, and I wish it was longer and had better fender clearance. But, it was
a good deal, I won't cry if it gets stolen, I can carry lots of stuff and
my daughter on it, and I really like the Nexus 5 speed hub for city riding.
Ideally I would have a Cheviot, or Clementine or even more ideally for me a
Workcycles FR8 to replace this. However, all of those are expensive if they
walk away, and I live in a high bike theft city, so will spend my money on
other rides.

1987? Douglas HornetXT - Recently acquired mountain bike. It is not pretty,
it has cheap replacement wheels/saddle, but otherwise full Deore XT 730 in
really good shape. I got it cheap as a trial balloon for a 26" wheel all
rounder - which I intend to enact after the Betty Foy and Trek, so likely
actual build will wait until 2017 ;) - second child on the way and it looks
like I'm going to have to keep my day job... I don't know anything about
Douglas, but it looks like it may have been a Colorado Cyclist house brand,
and the frame is a lugged Tange triple butted tubed made in Taiwan to quite
decent but not elegant standards bike. In its current state it is the bike
I ride to work when I don't need to drop daughter off at daycare or go
shopping. It is unfussy and unburdened by either monetary value or weighty
accessories.

[RBW] Dipping my toe into mountain riding at 8800 feet ...

2015-08-07 Thread true
Fun stuff.

Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed seeing the pics on the other thread.

I am in the Denver area a few times a year.
It would be fun to try one or more of those rides.

Of course if Patrick of the Moore was lagging behind I would be really lagging
being even more of a flatlander and older than him.

On two different month long self contained tours ( about 65 lbs of gear) with a
friend who is a much stronger rider
it was common for him to wait 30 minutes at the top of passes for me to make it.
I think the worse was a 45 minute wait.

I kept telling him to go on and we could meet at the day's end destination but
he said
he didn't mind waiting and wanted to make sure I made it ok.
He is a great riding companion and friend.

We did do some of that terrain, south of Denver ,roads only mind you, on the
2nd tour
from Sedalia, Decker, Pine, Bailey, Fairplay, across Boreas Pass to
Breckenridge,
and then points north through Wyoming on to Yellowstone Nat'l Park.

That was quite a trip.

Lover greports and seeing pics of adventures like this, especailly with the two
Patricks.

[RBW] Re: Ballad of the short arms

2015-08-07 Thread Stephen Kemp
I am surprised no one has linked to Riv's "Top Tube Ruse".
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzehUKAztnO8NDNkYWZiZTQtNjI1ZS00ZDU0LTgyNDUtNWFkNzk3YzRlNjI0/view

Basically tt length on its own doesn't tell the whole story - the place
where your bum will be is also governed by seat tube angle, saddle height
and other things (and other factors incl stem length, hbar type, head tube
angle, hbar height govern hand position). You could have a bike with a
short tt that still has you reaching too far. I also have a funny
dimensions thing going on (6ft with 94cm pbh - i.e. shorter top half of the
body than average which means I'd be reaching too far on a frame sized by
pbh according to Riv fit principles) which makes me think it would be more
appropriate to size by tt length but I always bear the top tube
ruse article in mind.

Not that I'm trying to throw spanners in the works here - as I said, just
surprised no one else has brought this up.

[RBW] Re: Best Riv for rear child seat?

2015-08-07 Thread 'john elliott' via RBW Owners Bunch
For years I used a quickbeam with a rear child seat it worked well in the
smaller gear for most riding.

I alternated it between a trek 620 with gears, for more long distance rides.

When my daughter was younger we used a front mount seat on the trek, I used
a nitto dirt drop stem to get the bars up higher than normal for that seat.

It was more interactive but she did outgrow it.

The GMG-911 dutch child seat can be put on and removed in seconds from
fairly standard rear racks and could be switched from bike to bike easily.

Lover reading reports and seeing pics of adventures like this, especailly with
the two Patricks.

[RBW] Re: Wool blanket recommendations?

2015-08-07 Thread Allan in Portland
Oh, oh, can I speak up?

Two weeks ago I scored a couple wool blankets for $10/ea at a garage sale.
Ostensibly it was a commemorative/decorative (which is to say in brand-new
condition because she, well, her parents likely paid a mint and couldn't
bear to actually use it for its intended purpose which was...) a horse
blanket from an equestrian event she competed in back in '96. As I was
picking out two from her not so small stack she mumbled "ugh, please don't
tell my parents what you paid for these."

I haven't measured it, but it's big enough to cover a horse, about queen
size. I'd say it weighs between 5 & 10 lbs. Thick, but not stiff as a
board, or stifling to be underneath.

Cheers,
-Allan

I have bought Army surplus wool blankets on eBay...perhaps not Pendleton or
Hudson Bay quality, but hey, from sheep's wool, nevertheless.

In fact the Boreal Shirt made by Lester River Bushcraft / Empire Canvas is
made from (new) Army blankets, and I think the wool is of exceptional
quality.

The ride is about the company and the experience, not the speed, at least
for me and I think most on this group. Holler next time you're in the area!

I believe hat is a Pletscher seat. I talked to Keven about it but he did not
think they sold it in the U.S. He got it as a demo from the distributer.

It does work with the Clem rack.

That's my dream Rivendell. A 54cm Hunqapillar with Bullmoose and 1x
drivetrain!!! The only difference is that my dream Hunqapillar is a bit
more color-coordinated than that one.

[RBW] Re: The Silver Hubs

2015-08-07 Thread Wayne Naha
I had never heard of an alloy cassette body before. I was completely
surprised to read that the Silver hubs have this. I didn't know that this
was a thing that hub manufacturers would do. Considering the cogs are
steel, and all the motive force propelling the bicycle forward is
transmitted through the driveshell, aluminum does seem an unlikely choice.
I would have thought it would be way too much stress for aluminum. It
would seem a no-brainer for Riv to have spec'd the best of all possible
bike materials, i.e., steel for the job. I wonder what their reasoning
was.

Wow! Nice looking bike! With an 89ish PBH, I'm at the top of a 54, but
could probably make it fit. Anyone interested in buying my Riv Road and
