[RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-11-08 Thread Steve Cole
Hi,

First, thanks to all who replied to my post and the questions I posed. A
lot of help, but so far not all of the problems have been solved. I've
played with the cable adjusters and the tension seems to be reduced
somewhat. The manual says, "When winding the cable adjusters out, the
cable tension is increased." This suggests that with the cable adjusters
tightened all the way (in), the shifters should be easiest to turn. I
don't think there's much I can do beyond this to make shifting easier; I
guess I'll develop a right forearm like a tennis pro, which should allow me
to spin some yarns.

As for the freewheeling, I've pretty much isolated the issue to a couple of
gear shifts -- from 5th to 6th and 10th to 11th, and the equivalent
downshifts. As others have noted, a slight pause and the shifting is
pretty seamless. I would have hoped and expected that shifting would have
been seamless between all gears with the possible exception of the oft
noted 7th to 8th. Comments on this would be appreciated.

With respect to the questions asked by those of you who replied. Here are
some answers:

1. The Simpleone normally has a 120 mm rear drop out spacing. The Rohloff
hub spacing is 135 mm. Respecting is relatively easy for a steel framed
bicycle. My respecting was done by a custom frame builder. He also reset
the dropouts to ensure they are parallel.

2. Some suggested that having the hub serviced might resolve the
freewheeling issue. Unfortunately, it was serviced completely just before
the build. Oh well.

3. Noise. Some respondents suggested that their hub is pretty much silent.
I've found mine to be silent in the "upper register," gears 8-14. 7th
gear is clearly the loudest and the other gears in the lower register also
are accompanied with some friction-related noise. I'm not bothered but am
curious whether a perfectly operating hub should be virtually silent in all
gears when not shifting.

Even with these issues, I find I falling for this bike. I find myself
finding opportunities to ride it that I might have otherwise passed up. I
also find I'm not want to take my AHH out as of yet. It may still be the
newness or my continuing curiosity about this new machine. Still, I love
the ride and the quirks. More to come with more experience with it.

[RBW] Re: Build help needed

2015-11-08 Thread Edwin W
So it sounds like:
Get a new bottom bracket with a longer spindle, which would move both crank
arms out and increase Q factor.
Get some spacers for drive side. This would move the existing spindle inward on
the non-drive side and outward on the drive side. Q factor stays the same, and
you'd be a bit asymmetric, but only by the mm you move.
Depending on how much I need to move it might determine the fix.
I hit the stay as I was installing the crank, but probably not too much.
Hopefully the LBS will do me a little swap without paying too much.
I think I will go for a new one to be safe.

Screwing adjusters out increases cable tension, while screwing them in

anything to do with whether shifters are easy to turn or not. I've
tried a number of different types of shifters, even a twist grip once or
twice, and I don't recall any where the shifter became more difficult to
turn (whatever that means) as you shifted into lower and lower gears.
I think you need to look elsewhere to find the source of your problem.

Re: [RBW] 10-speed Cassette with Sunrace Friction Shifters.

2015-11-08 Thread Tim Gavin
Regarding your second question, the RD will work.

You can friction or index a 10-speed cassette with a 9-speed Shimano rear
derailer. The shifter controls the speeds and/or indexing; "SIS" derailers
(7, 8, 9 speed MTB, 7, 8, 9, 10 speed road) all have the same cable pull
ratio and are interchangeable.

I've only tried index for 10-speeds, and I've never tried the Sunrace
shifters, so I can't answer your first question.

I don't know if the Sunrace shifters have enough travel for a 10 speed
cassette.

I did notice that the Shimano levers travel farther; 10-speed shifters
couldn't reach their 10th click when I mounted them on 9-speed bar-end
pods. Shimano's 10-speed bar-end pods are a different casting that allows
further lever travel. But, that's for indexing.

But, a 10-speed cassette is only ~1.5 mm wider than a 9-speed cassette, so
one would hope that the shifters could permit that extra travel. Shimano's
9-speeds did not.

Sounds like a definite maybe.

I wanted to get the date out there as soon as I had it, and here's some
more information on what exactly the RSR is. This is the best write up of
last year's event:
http://ridinggravel.forumchitchat.com/post/strada-rossa-around-redlands-calif-march-21-2015-7345407?pid=1286625981#post1286625981

And some pics:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/albums/72157651165005667

Also a great video that's in the link above, but deserves it's own:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmlq_CD5FbU=youtu.be_channel=JamesWei

The intention is to have a solid ride that's just tough enough, but not too
tough for most people. Around 100km (62 miles), and doable on a MTB or a
road bike, but best enjoyed on a cross bike. Last year we really put a
great course together that avoided traffic, and was able to be altered by
riders to shorten up on skip portions easily. Moderate levels of
support/aide stations. And inexpensive.

We want to get people on bikes (!) and promote the riding in and around
Redlands. Open to any suggestions you may have!

Will be able to find lodging for out of towners, just give me a holler and
will see if we can dig up a sofa somewhere. Will hopefully be worth the
drive!!!

[RBW] Rivendell sightings

2015-11-08 Thread dstein
I love living in the Bay Area and seeing so many Rivendells out there!

Spotted this weekend:
A Betty Foy outside the Ferry Building yesterday morning
An Atlantis on BART getting on at downtown Oakland yesterday afternoon
3 Rivendell's this morning around 8:30-9AM descending Tunnel Rd as I was
just starting my climb up it (I think these were all Riv's, at least one
was and the other two were Riv'd out if nothing else)
A Sam Hillborne at the Top of Tunnel Rd that I chatted with for a brief
second onto Skyline

I also saw a pretty decked out Surly with racks descending Tunnel Rd near
the top as well and pretty sure I saw a Hillborne locked up near Rockridge
Bart of Friday.

Hope to see some Clems out there soon!

I might be complicating issues by using a 9-speed derailer, but that really

Re: [RBW] Re: Help with a tubeless conversion

2015-11-08 Thread Tim Gavin
My tubeless experience:

Non-tubeless-ready Pari Moto tires on tubeless-ready Pacenti PL23 rims --
Set up easily (with compressor), but unreliable. The Pari Moto sidewalls
are so thin that the sealant and air can seep through. They'd leak down to
25 psi within an hour, as I found out a couple times an hour into my ride!
The tires stayed in their bead seat when deflated; the PL23 bead works well.

Non-tubeless-ready Ground Control fat tires on non-tubeless-ready stock
rims -- Set up was a pain (super wide rim tape required, tedious to lay
down), but relatively reliable. Stayed set and held pressure (quite low,
<10 psi) for a while, but eventually leaks formed as the liquid sealant
wormed its way through the seams in the tape job. The tire construction is
heavier (60 tpi) and I never had sealant leak through.

I think in this case "learning the very hard way" would most likely
involve a puncture on a fast downhill and the tire coming entirely off the

That's really cool. I don't see many around here in San Diego. If I do see

I see a lot of road/tri riders up and down the coast racing each other,
running stop signs and lights to keep their Strava times down. All the

heading south and ending their journeys so that's kind of neat. I chat with

Hi Tony, the bike looks great. I know others have expressed a preference
for the proto orange, but I much prefer this version.

It's interesting that the angle of your photos, from slightly more above,
really emphasizes the length of those chainstays!

Regarding the tediousness of tension, that need not be:

http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html#chain

Obviously with a bike like the Clem, you are going to be adding, not
subtracting. So in that case I would simply attach a nice extra length of
chain that you know will more than do it, and then follow Sheldon's method
above. Works like a charm for me every time, even on a Big Dummy

[RBW] Re: Anybody switched from 58 to 62 Hunq?

2015-11-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
You really could go either way I suspect. Did you work with Rivendell? I'm
sure they set you up with the right stem/bar combo. If you do trail riding
now or ever, most people like the extra stand over height (I've never had
an issue with this.). Long way of saying if I'd gotten the 58 I'd likely
love it just as much.

With abandon,
Patrick

The downside I see is rather the need to continually monitor the tire

[RBW] Re: 10-speed Cassette with Sunrace Friction Shifters.

2015-11-08 Thread David Banzer
Well, a big nevermind.
I forgot the wheel I have built up has an older Deore 7s freehub, so
obviously 10-speed (all 10) won't fit.
And I managed to take apart a couple pinned 7s cassettes to get a
reasonable range for my Clem.
For those interested, it'll be a 42t single chainring with a
12-13-14-15-16-21-28 cassette. It's really flat here, so I like a range of
flatland gears. I'll most likely be in the 14-15-16 range mostly - will be
starting with 42mm tires at first as that's what I already have. The 12t
probably won't get use, and I have a top 13t I can add and throw in
something between the large jumps.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-11-08 Thread Daniel Jackson
Get rid of the GB shifter; get a Rohloff shifter. Very likely this will ease
shifting. I've seen this problem on a few GB setups and issues were solved with
swapping out for a rohloff shifter.

It may be that in these cases the recabling is what fixed the issue, but
unlikely because in two cases I've seen both the GB and he Rohloff cabling were
done by the same experienced mechanic.

My 2 cents...

[RBW] Re: Rivendell sightings

2015-11-08 Thread Tom Virgil
Hello Bruce and valued member of the Smitham family.

I believe I see you from time to time on Carmel Valley Road between I5 and
the coast. I am usually returning from science park up in Torrey Pines (in
a car) where I now work after something of a career change. That's another
topic. I have seen your father once on Carmel Creek Road (hat under
helmet is pretty unique, but wise if he is dealing with a dermatologist. I
understand that). Out on the 56 bikeway I am riding a powder blue Sam
with cream trim and magenta handlebar tape, or my merlot (thought you might
like that) Boulder All Road. Hugh has road tested the All Road and seemed
to come away with a good opinion.

I recently returned to gmail and saw some old email about an ebike for
Bruce Sr. My sincere apology for not being responsive. If you or your
father would like to try one, let me know, I have one. It's not for sale,
so no guile here, but there are ways of watching the sales at TREK and
getting a substantial discount. I use mine for riding to work and riding
in street clothes without sweating out the bike garb.

I am over in Santa Fe Summit, but way down on the last street before
Gonzales Canyon. Great access to the canyon but a lung buster to come up
Sword and the rest of the world. Come on down or i will come up and let's
ride.

Best regards,

Tom

Re: [RBW] Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-11-08 Thread Ken Yokanovich
That would be my Goodrich with Rohloff # 5841. I have had the hub for
about 12 years, gosh knows how many trouble free miles. The hub itself has
been through heck and back, several 24 hour solo mountain bike races
(different bike, ) two unsuccessful attempts at Trans Iowa, many a winter
rides, toured, generally been ridden anywhere and in about every condition.
The hub itself started its life as a non disk brake version, but I had it
converted by by Thomas of Rohloff 10 years ago. At that time, he replaced
the seals on it as the EARLY hubs were prone to some seeping of the oil.

I had Curt build the bike modeled with similar geometry to my Rivendell
custom (that he also built.) The hub is great that all of the indexing and
shifting is contained within the hub itself, nothing special needed by the
shifter other than the ability to pull two opposing cables. When it came
time for the shifter on the bike, I pitched the idea that I just wanted a
big-ol-knob, like an old stereo. He had it made with a press-fit sealed
cartridge bearing and it is mounted to a standard shift lever boss.

Curt was great to work with and was gracious enough to let me take the bike
with only primer for several months to make certain everything worked as
desired. My kids painted it for me.

In the years since, the bike has been pretty flawless. I can't really tell
the difference in drag/resistance between the Rohoff and any of my other
bikes. It is GREAT for touring, particularly on rollers where you just
shift up or down and don't worry about when to shift the front derailleur
vs back. It really is like a 14 speed singlespeed. I grabbed a few photos
I had around from rides, etc...

https://flic.kr/s/aHsknRBZy8

Now, onto completing the Rivendell custom order form I just printed
muwahhahaha.

Edwin,
I have a Shimano Deore 122.5mm bottom bracket (looseball, comes with

Yep, this is what I'm afraid of Deacon. I'm your size and measurement exactly

I wish it did! But, 6 weeks in to the tubeless experiment, I still had to
pump up the tires every hour or so, and froth would result from the
sidewalls. After all that frustration -- and two falls due to low pressure
-- I gave up on running the Pari-Motos tubeless.

I tried tubeless because:
* I had tons of flats with the previous tires (Lierres), and I got a flat
within the first 50 miles of the Pari Motos with tubes.
* The PL23 rims are tubeless-ready

What's funny is that since got a new set of Pari-Motos and ran them with
tubes, I've had zero flats in ~1000 miles. I did put some sealant in the
tubes to be safe, but I've had no punctures to test it (I'm OK with that).

On my fat tires, the tape was heavy .014 mil vinyl and it had some wrinkles
upon application (too heavy to lay down completely smooth). The sealant
worked its way into those wrinkles and wet the adhesive enough to keep the
channels open. I'd get sealant leaks up through the rim holes.

didn't charge me much for it. Stem coming tomorrow, then on to levers, shifter
