Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-03-24 Thread Anne Paulson
Rivsters, listen to Jonathan. He knows a lot about camping with bears.
(Hi Jonathan!)

The Flathead River Valley, the area the southbound GDMBR rider
encounters after Corbin and the Flathead Pass, is a wild and beautiful
place. Supposedly, it's where they relocate problem grizzlies. We
didn't see any bears there, but we were careful to keep anything
scented away from our tents. It was one of the sections of the Great
Divide where I was glad not to be alone.

I started out last July 1, and there was no snow. I don't know what it
will be like this year. You should be OK starting in July.

There are some places where some people have to walk, and a few places
where everybody has to walk. Not too many places, though.

The GPS is a good idea. You should be OK following your friend's GPS route.

That is really well written. Sounds like an LA-centric type surprised to
find something so interesting out there on the edge of civilization. But
good natured enough about the whole experience to admit being
under-equipped; either too light tires or not enough tubes. They sound
like a fun group who has been introduced to a whole new area. "Adventure
ride" is the perfect description. I like Mark's comments at the end, too.

I always have a great time in "dirtville". Sand, gravel, water crossings,
rattle snakes, jambalaya, beer, good friends & good times.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-03-24 Thread Mark Reimer
Ah, excellent advice. My Atlantis can fit 2.25 thunder burts but there is
very little clearance on the sides. Like...maybe 2mm per side. I rode the
Oregon Outback and across Washington with that setup last year, more than
half of it in the rain on gravel and dirt. It was totally fine. The second
it gets tacky or sticky though the entire thing locks up hard. If this
isn't sticky terrain, I'd definitely go to 2.25 tires again.

 Hello,

I'm planning out a June bike tour to coincide with the adventure

I'm thinking of flying to Edmonton, riding or busing to Jasper, then
riding the Icefields Parkway to Banff. Haven't heard of the Icefields
Parkway? Do yourself a favour and just Google 'cycling the icefields
parkway'. It's Canada's crown jewel for paved bike touring. Glaciers,
 mountains, wildlife and campgrounds everywhere.

From Banff I want to hop on the Great Divide Mountainbike route and
ride to Missoula. Has anyone done that section of it? I'm just wondering
how a more traditional touring setup like my Atlantis would handle the
route. I know most of the GDMBR is just gravel roads, but I've also read
that the Canadian and Montana section is some of the rougher single track.
How about it, any of you taken your Rivs on this trail?

Also, anyone going to be in Missoula!?

I'll get it out of town if need be. I kinda felt I deserved and appreciate
the Rom, though slightly less than I appreciate my Hilsen and my Hillborne,
and my wife does not appreciate the size of the current bike stable - I
felt so accomplished to have whittled it down to 4 last year but somehow
they multiplied to 7 or 8 over the winter. Rom got voted out by 2 other
Rivs, a Surly Troll, a Bike Friday family tandem and a Breezer

Tony,

I also installed a mount on my wife's 50cm Cheviot. She hasn't ridden with the
baby on yet, but I will let you know what her experience is. I'm sure it
depends on the baby. Lucy is about 10 months old and 17 pounds so she's on the
small side.

[RBW] Re: Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-03-24 Thread Jonathan Black
I rode the GDMBR Canada section in July 2015 from Banff to Eureka, MT. I
rode on 2.1 inch tires. It worked OK, I guess. This July 2016 I'm going
to ride the Montana section with 3 inch tires. So, bottom line: 2.1 will
do, but more rubber is highly desirable on this trail. When the going gets
tough, you'll want more rubber. But when it is easy, your 2.1 tire will
fly. Sticky mud is not a concern, wet gravel is.
Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-03-24 Thread Jonathan Black
My experience is that Divide Riders are pretty savvy with the proper way to
camp in bear country. Divide Riders are the type who do their homework.
Hang your food, don't eat in or near your tent, wear your bear spray on
your person, and be bear aware. I rode with Anne Paulson on the Canada
section for a week. She is right. Spectacular! I live just a few miles
from the Tetons so I am very familiar with bears.

Re: [RBW] Re: Romulus refurbished as 650b

2016-03-24 Thread WETH
Patrick,
Thanks! Just to clarify- it is a Romulus not a rodeo.
Cost is something I try not to dwell on; my wife tells me it's cheaper than
golf, but I am not so sure! I bought the frameset for $400 and the
powdercoating cost me $250. Most of the components were bought from Riv, my
LBS or this group! If you are converting an existing bike your two costs would
be wheelset and brakes. The Wheelset was $270 shipped and bought last summer
from someone in this group I think. The description:
"The front is a Deore LX hub laced to a 32 spoke Velocity Synergy rim. The rear
is a Deore LX hub (8/9/10 speed compatible, 135mm spacing) laced to a 36 spoke
velocity Synergy OC rim. I believe both rims were made by Rich Lesnik of
Rivendell/Hands on Wheels, but only the front has the HoW sticker, so I could
be mistaken about the rear." The wheelset came with a used set of 650Bx40
Schwalbe Marathons.
Brakes are Tektro r559 $77 new from Riv.

To your second question, I cannot answer as I never road the Romulus with 700c
wheels.

Happy to answer other questions.
Thanks,
Erl

Re: [RBW] Re: Romulus refurbished as 650b

2016-03-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Erl: Pretty Damn Good! May I ask:

1. What this conversion and overhaul cost?

2. That you describe the difference in the Roadeo's handling with 650B and
with 700C wheels?

Others: I owned an earlier 56 cm stt Sam Hillborne and sold it because I
didn't care for the fit (59 cm tt; yes I know that the sta is 711*) or the
way it rode on the road. But I still have a soft spot for it: it had some
very nice handling qualities, and I regretted that it could not take tires
as wide as I want for our local dirt.

I see that the current SH replacement is the 55, with a *57!!!* cm tt
(versus the 59 of the 56) and that the 55 still takes 700C wheels.

If one were to 650B-i-fy a current 55 cm SH, how large a tire could you use
(i) without fenders and (ii) with fenders?

I think I am not mistaken in believing that a SH with, say, 50 or 60 mm
tires of the F Fred type would be a wonderful all-roader.

[RBW] Re: 50 t rear cog -- Never walk another hill

2016-03-24 Thread Lungimsam
Sounds like an interesting idea. It makes a 10-speed cassette.
But if you only like friction shifting, like me, fugghetaboutit..

In my experience, friction shifting 10 is horrible and full of auto shits.
9 is fine.
8 is great.
7 pretty much eliminates auto shifting for me so far

I also don't like the discus like appearance of a cassette that large. YMMV.

Evan, Leif and Franklyn,
Thank you for your comments; I am pleased with how it turned out.

Leif,
The powdercoater recommended a light sanding before I painted to scuff the
surface a bit. I sprayed two coats of enamel and used a brush for the windows
on the fork.
I followed someone from this group's recommendation to go to a hobby store for
the enamel paint. It has held up well through the build process. Time will
tell how durable it will be. Even if it chips off, there is powdercoat
underneath. I am also going to apply some helicopter tape to areas on the head
tube to shield it from cable rub.

they only reason I haven't tried this conversion yet is that I've already
got too many bikes and one of them is a Saluki. Anyway, love the new paint

[RBW] Re: 50 t rear cog -- Never walk another hill

2016-03-24 Thread iamkeith
I just saw that too. I know this wasn't the point of your posting, but
I've never figured out why so many people on this board think these large
cogs are so ridiculous. I completely understand the goal of eliminating a
front derailleur and, in my opinion, this is just now finally... and just
barely... getting to the point where a 1x drivetrain could be feasible and
realistic. Admittedly, it really only works for mountainous trail riding,
even then. I'm assuming you'd use a single front ring around 30 or 32
teeth, to still have a decent granny gear, so you wouldn't have the tall
gears needed for road riding, and the steps between the middle cogs would
probably be too big too.

You just have to think outside of the road bike and flattish, paved areas,
to the places where I live and ride.

The things that I think funny are 2x drivetrains. If you're going to
need a derailleur and shifter anyway, you might as well add that third
ring and give yourself all the range you can use.

[RBW] Re: On tire supple-itude

2016-03-24 Thread John Phillips
Hi,
My neighborhood roads are much worse than those in Steve's photos. My
wife & I both thought something was wrong with our bikes, because we didn't
experience that same "Wow!" when we brought our new Riv's home. Turns out,
those road surfaces near Riv HQ were simply smoother than what's outside
our door. Changing from Big Ben's to Compass Pass tires solved our road
buzz/bump issues.

But this was with a Hunqapillar and a Betty Foy with albaross bars. On my
new AHH, with noodle bars, I find I'm much less affected by these same
neighborhood bumps & cracks, even riding Little Ben tires.

I have to admit, though, that I inflate all my tires enough to insure they
don't get squirrelly on the turns. Deflating stiff tires enough to be cushy
is not an option in our traffic & on our hills.

OTOH, I could see myself putting up with all the buzz I would get if I was
commuting on Marathons simply because I need to get there on time everyday,
come hell or high water.

John

Re: [RBW] On tire supple-itude

2016-03-24 Thread Mark Reimer
I'm also a big fan of jack brown green. I normally ride Thunderburt 2.1 or
2.25 in the lightest most supple variant (whatever it's called, Schwalbe
naming protocol is in serious need of a rebrand) and Barlow Pass EL 38's on
the pavement. They are all wonderful. But the Jack Brown rolls wonderfully
as well (perhaps ever so slightly behind the Compass tire), but is
significantly tougher and more resistant to flats. I would LOVE a Jack
Brown green in a 42 or even 50 for loaded touring. 33.333 still seems so
skinny to me when the bike is loaded to the max. Thinking the Schwalbe
Super Moto might be the next tire I get...

Re: [RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa -- 100 mile report, whimsical photo and Want To Scavenge post

2016-03-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
Bill In Westchester

Short answer, I assume there was a loose body floating around and that
caused the jam, and the groove is the result of that jam. Whatever that
loose body was, you cleaned it out when you cleaned out the grease. The
Mavic Crossmax rear wheel that I just tried to fix has extreme grooving in
a regular pattern around the hub shell which was originally smooth

What you are looking at is the recess where one of two pawls would sit, and
the grooved surface to the right of that recess is supposed to be smooth.
Something broke off or got in there and got dragged around the hubshell
making that nasty groove pattern. The pawls themselves are damaged, and I
assume that bits of metal that broke off these pawls was what got dragged
around. I'm going to replace them with some aftermarket pawls that are
marketed as being superior to the stock Mavic parts. I'd guess that it's
50/50 that it will work, and this kid (one of my high-school bike racers)
might have to spring for a new rear wheel. If I can get the new pawls to
stay put, and they remain in one piece, though, it should work for another
season or two. It will be on my offseason checklist to check this kid's
freehub again.

Re: [RBW] On tire supple-itude

The Grand Bois Hetre is renowned for its longevity and relatively low flat
rate. I use the regular version and it's cheaper than the EL. I never
heard of anyone regretting the use of these tires, although maybe someone
here will prove me wrong!

If you have the small Park chain tool (Mini Brute, I think... maybe
others), you can use it to tighten/loosen valve cores.

BTW...one funny thing I learned when I used to tour across Manitoba during
the late eighties and we would ride through bear country in Riding
Mountain, for instance, is that you don't want to even have toothpaste or
other hygiene items in your tent, because bears are attracted to the scent.
When someone told me this lo many years ago, I thought they were joking,
but of course , once I thought about it a little more, it totally made
sense. Just wasn't something that would have been on my radar at the time
in 1986, where I was very green when it came to camping and bicycle touring

[RBW] Romulus refurbished as 650b

2016-03-24 Thread WETH

I blame Tony DeFilippo; he emailed me and several other area Rivendell
aficionados last June about a Romulus frameset that his Bike co-op had for
sale. The size was either a 59 or 61, and the frame was in rough shape. Rust
had pitted the frame in several places. Not being in the market for another
bike, I thanked Tony but denied interest. However, I couldn't get the forlorn
looking Romulus out of my mind. The words forlorn and Romulus do not belong
together! After contacting the co-op manager, I went to see the bike and, of
course, bought it! I will digress and divulge that I own two dogs both of whom
we adopted from a dog rescue program at a prison.

Not being in the market for a bike, I wondered what to do with the rescued
Romulus. The rust concerned me; I sanded down the egregious cancers and called
Keven at RBW. We talked through the merits and philosophy of beausage. I like
beausage but prefer to be the one who inflicts the wounds. Keven kindly told
me whatever I did to safeguard the headbadge as those were irreplaceable now.
Slowly I formed a plan to resurrect the Romulus as a 650b commuter. (I had
recently unconverted my Riv Road Standard back to 700c. ). I delivered the
Romulus to a local automotive body shop for powdercoating in Ford Blue. I feel
Romulus would have driven a Ford! I then hand painted the head tube in a cream
and reapplied the badge and the new decals Keven sent.

If you've read this far you deserve some photos of the project from start to
finish: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157654006187120

After a long ride today I am smitten; I am not sure smitten and Romulus go
together either. It's a bromance! I didn't know what to expect but I really
enjoy the ride!

Of course now I have n+1 too many bikes...
Thanks for all the inspiration and know-how so generously provided by so many
in this group! And thanks Tony! I owe you...

Safe cycling wishes,
Erl

Re: [RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa -- 100 mile report, whimsical photo and Want To Scavenge post

2016-03-24 Thread Mark Reimer
I can't imagine how anything in there could cause that groove. The pawls
can't move any direction other than in/out. MAYBE if some kind of debris
got in there, or if you chipped a tooth on a pawl or the ratchet ring,
perhaps that was smashed into the hub body while under load. Any sign of
broken teeth anywhere?? Very curious.

Nice freehub design though. It's very similar to Industry Nine, which Paul
uses in their RHUBs. 6 pawls, each with multiple points of engagement,
makes for a buzzy hub but very quick engagement and a nice distribution of
the load. Not sure if you can do this or not, but Industry Nine says you
can remove three of the six pawls if you want, which makes it quieter and
less drag, while sacrificing the 'immediate' engagement a bit. I personally
have no idea why anyone would want to do that, but to each their own.

Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-03-24 Thread Deacon Patrick
I've no idea what most Divide riders do. My experience and rule of thumb is
the more humans have stupidly conditioned smart bears to turn to
people/campsites for food, the greater the need for a bear bag. In the
areas I go there is little training, but on a defined route, that risk
rises. Keeping a generally clean camp and following common sense rules goes
a long way toward protecting you. Ultimately, however, its a bag that's
under $100 that protects you and the bears and isn't a big deal. Some
places require a bear proof container, though I do not believe there are
any on the GDMTBT.

-- Cook, eat, etc away from your camp.
-- Clean up your eating area.
-- Store food overnight away from your tent, if possible hanging from a
tree, but this is VERY hard to do many places. Usually it's a lot of extra
work to accomplish very little (starters: good luck finding a tree branch
like in the diagram. They only exist on one in 10,000 trees, and never
where I am).

By controlling scents and access, I've never had an issue with a bear, and
that includes multiple overnights in Death Canyon in the Grand Tetons, so
named because of Grizzly bear attacks (where we saw multiple bears from a
mile off on every trip).

Anne - I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the Corbin
route. Your comment about walking - is that because of the steep grades,
terrain, snow, maybe all three? Any other general route advice? A friend of
mine raced the divide last year and gave me his GPS file to follow. I was
planning on basing my route on that and sticking as close to the 'official'
route as possible.

When you say the mech locked up, do you mean it came to a complete and

I'm also wondering this. I had planned on just putting a rope around my

Re: [RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa -- 100 mile report, whimsical photo and Want To Scavenge post

2016-03-24 Thread William R.
Hi Bill. I too have been admiring the construction of the rear hub. And the
ease of taking it apart. I had a problem though. I needed to take mine
apart because on my first ride the rear freewheel mechanism locked up. When
I took it apart and looked at the pawls I was amazed that there were six of
them! Very nice. I think it jammed because there was some very sticky white
grease on the pawls. I cleaned it out with wd-40, let it dry and applied
chain oil. I use chainsaw bar chain oil. The hub operates beautifully now.
I noticed when I had the hub opened up that one of the areas between the
pawls had a grove in it (see photo). Actually, on closer inspection of the
photo I see a smaller second groove closer to the pawl on the right. I
wonder if this was a result of the jam or the cause. Or was it the grease?
I feel like the grease had something to do with it. Could one or two of the
ratchet gears get caught there like that? The photo was taken after I
cleaned the grease out. Everything is working well now and I've been riding
it a lot since this happened. I can't really wrap my head around what could
have happened there. Any thoughts? Anyone?

Re: [RBW] On tire supple-itude

2016-03-24 Thread Justin August
I agree. I also have had the same if not fewer flats since swapping to wider,
more supple tires at lower pressure. Adding in a couple ounces of Stan's to my
tubes was more out of boredom and tinkering than real need.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 62cm Saluki

2016-03-24 Thread Justin August
Having owned a Bleriot and owning a Saluki I have to say that the main
advantages I gained were better fit (as they were different sizes) and... A
kickstand plate that I never use? The Saluki definitely has more braze-ons
which is good. Overall I think I preferred the paint quality on the Bleriot
(gasp!) but the Saluki just fits me better. They ride about the same from what
I can tell.
