[RBW] Re: Anybody attend the Rivendell book reading for Bike Snob?

2016-06-20 Thread Joe Bernard
I liked his attitude about bike racing: "Electric motors? Sure, go ahead, who
cares!" That cracked me up.

I confess, I bonked out of the ride. I've always been a slow cruiser guy, but a
few years ago I could still climb a decent hill without keeling over. This
time?..not so much. I was off the back but still plugging away on the paved
part, but the dirt trail did me in. I got to the third rise as the next
off-the-backers were walking up the fourth one, and it was getting HOT.

I said to myself, "Joe, don't be a tough guy. You have no idea how much
longer/tougher this route is. It's time." So I headed back to RBW. I heard
later that someone wiped out, quote, "spectacularly", (no injuries) so I guess
it was a semi-gnarly ride. It was a day of adventure!

Does one get points on their DMV record for tickets accrued while bike riding?
Or just have to pay the fine?

A bike isnt a motor vehicle or car, though the cyclist must follow the rules of
the road.So I wonder how the DMV handles that.

[RBW] Re: Anybody attend the Rivendell book reading for Bike Snob?

2016-06-20 Thread dstein
I was there, mostly to go for the ride after which I ended up not going on,
go figure.

I've read another of his books but not really his blogs so wasn't too
familiar with him. His presentation thing was fine, pretty funny. The Q I
thought was weird, the questions kind of put Eben in a weird position of
being bike ambassador of the world, and he really just didn't know how to
answer the questions (which I don't blame him at all), but still had a good
sense of humor about it. He riffed on track bikes, triathalon bikes, and
fat bikes a good bit. The book itself is nothing special, its an intro
buyer's guide to bikes. After drinking the Rivendell kool-aid over the
years I felt it didn't have much more to offer and was missing the
philosophic musings in Gran's riding. That being said, I'm glad I went and
paid the $20 for the book because I wanted to support the community and
encourage the message.

Grant gave a pretty funny intro of being pulled over and given a ticket for
running a stoplight (which he did in fact do), and then he went to contest
in court in which he convinced the judge to 'think about it' for a few
days. He just got the letter from the court and had an audience member open
it and let him know what the decision was. I won't ruin this surprise
ending, you'll have to call rivendell and ask to find out the verdict ;)

Ha! That is literally the first 'mountain bike' ride I went on when I
briefly owned a salsa el mariachi, except I did the loop all the way around
seaview and down quarry back to the parking spot where you started. It
almost completely turned me off mountain biking all together. 3 mtn bikes
and several trails later I'm still going strong though. I do take my dog on
that hike all the time though and often think about that first ride and how
shitty it was. So many loose rocks.

[RBW] Re: Mark's/M18 failures?

2016-06-20 Thread Bill M.
I agree that the diving board is the weak point of the M18. I used my M18
for a while on the rear of a bike as a support for a Carradice Camper. It
was actually a great fit, but the diving board eventually bent under a load
of groceries and allowed the rack to start rubbing the tire. A little
force bent it back enough to get me home. I now use panniers on a Tubus
Ergo low-rider to carry heavier loads on that bike. My Camper is sitting
idle for lack of a better support solution.

I'm not sure that I would trust the Mark's rack to work better for that
application, but in that case I might expect the mounting bolts to rotate
under load rather than the struts bending.

Re: [RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-20 Thread Zed Martinez
I'm running Switchbacks Mark, but mine's totally just noob mistakes. I
never pedal through turns, but I'd also never had a bike where I had to pay
any particular thought to raising the inside pedal before the turn. I mean,
I've scraped the end of a few before, but on the Clem that sucker just
slammed into the ground and about knocked the bike over the first time I
took that little crest lazily. In my case, I guess I didn't so much have to
raise my cornering game as bother to bring one at all. Like masmojo, quick
to adjust for it, but yeah. It probably does come down to both the lowish
BB and the tendency for the wheels to straddle obstacles. No big deal at
all, if amusing for trail users when I forget, but definitely a thing I had
to start paying attention to for the first time as just a commuter.

[RBW] Re: Finding fun in un-un-racing

2016-06-20 Thread Jan Heine
Good job! A career change to mountain bike pro may be in order! Or more
likely, it's surprising what a lifetime of cycling will give you in skills.

I think what people mostly are reacting to when they identify as
"Un-Racers" are the attitudes of racers (or more often, wannabe racers),
rather than the fact that pushing yourself a bit can be fun. When we are
returning from a long trip in the mountains with panniers on our bikes, and
every "racer" on the (flat) bike trail picks us as a target, passing us,
and then slowing down exhausted, it gets tiring.

But that doesn't mean that riding a performance bike isn't fun, and the
better the bike performs, the more fun it can be. In fact, I sometimes give
in to the temptation and up the pace myself, drop the wannabe racers, and
then keep up the pace, if only to get home sooner. Feeling the bike in sync
with my pedal strokes and my entire body working hard is fun.

The true high-level racers I've known are usually very pleasant. They don't
need to prove to everybody how fast they are – if you want to race, line up
at the start line! It's the non-racers who treat every commute as a
competition, and every guy (or even better, woman) on a heavily loaded bike
as an opportunity.

It's easy to confound "anti-attitude" with "anti-performance", but I think
that is a mistake. Cycling is fun in part because of its speed. Otherwise,
we could be walking. That doesn't mean that we should prioritize speed over
everything else – comfort and fun are more important. But when the gains
come without penalties, such as wide supple tires – faster, more
comfortable and more puncture-resistant – or frames that get in sync with
your pedal strokes ("planing") – lighter, more fun at any power output –
then it makes sense to embrace them.

Fortunately, the image of a "performance bike" is changing. No longer is it
a harsh-riding machine with skinny tires pumped to 100 psi or more. With
the new "Gravel" and "Allroad" bikes, the industry finally is espousing
what this group has been about all along.

[RBW] Re: How hot is your town?

2016-06-20 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Here in Louisville, KY it's 88 and 50% humidity. Forecast for the week is 90-94
with humidity between 55-65%. I'll take that over 50 degrees any day. I've
always done pretty well with the heat. I'm from KC where it's hotter and more
humid this week than here in KY. As an ironworker who has spent every KC winter
since 1979 working outside, I'll never, ever complain about hot weather. I
sweat as profusely as anyone I've ever known (the bolt on a brand new quill
stem will be completely rusted within 2 weeks of installation) and I just drink
and drink and am usually none the worse for it, so there has never been a day
when I thought it was too hot to ride. I did make a slight miscalculation in
2011 when I decided to ride the Southern Tier route from San Diego to St.
Augustine, and I thought it would be clever, since I'm so tough and macho, to
begin the ride on July 5th. The first 14 days of the ride reached over 100
degrees, with the peak reading on my Garmin in a parking lot in Phoenix at 122!
I never once reached my goal mileage (which I set unreasonably high to start
with) and didn't complete the ride. Next time I try it will be an April or
October start. Lungimsam, the DC and KC heat and humidity are very, very
similar.

[RBW] Nine Speed Index Setup

2016-06-20 Thread Michael Hechmer
Ok, this is a bit off topic, my apologies, but I am perplexed.

I run 9 speed silver friction shifter on all of my bikes except the tandem,
which has Shimano bar ends. I usually run it in friction, mostly because I
don't have regular experience with indexing and when they need adjustment,
I struggle until I say, oh the hell with it. But I have been trying to get
this indexing right because I am thinking I want to try 10 speed on this
bike. So here's what's happening.

I can lift the chain from the outside 11 to the inside 28 in consistent
steps, but when I try to drop the chain it hangs up for an extra click
right at the start and then jumps across the 12 to the 11 at the end.
Occasionally, it will jump from the 9 to the 7 position on the second
click. Everything works OK in friction mode, although the 9 to 8 did seem
a bit wider, so I tightened the low set screw until the chain would just
barely reach, then backed it out a couple of degrees. This made no
difference. It just occurred to me that I have not measured the chain, but
it's hard to see how that could cause this behavior.

Any thoughts?

Hot, even in VT.

I've been riding Big Bens, which I believe are nearly identical size wise to
the Kendas.
And yes, I've adjusted my riding style, but occasionally you get stuck in an
awkward place and you get jammed up. I remember one night I was trying to lift
the front wheel up from street level to the sidewalk, a car turned towards me,
I don't quite get the wheel clear, but it rolls over the top anyway, just as I
am cussing myself for missing it and thinking OK it wasn't graceful, but I
made it, my pedal/foot hit the curb ever so slightly, but just enough to break
my momentum and stop me. No harm done, but it makes you feel kinda stupid,
you put your foot down & the pedal pegs dig into the back of your leg! URGH!

I have not experienced pedal strike with the Clementine on the road. While
cutting through short, rutted trails of some grade, I've bumped a rock once
or twice, but that would have probably happened on any bike. Though I am a
former racer, I tend to not pedal through turns of 90 degrees or more these
days. I mean, why? Especially on a fat tire roadish bike with upright bars.

I just sold my Surly Big Dummy after 3 years, no pedal strike there either.
Checking the geometry, I found this.

So does the longer CS length contribute in some way on Clems? Maybe.
Interesting. But I suspect it's a matter too of riding style, and once
you've ridden the bike for a bit, the pedal strike thing, unless egregious,
will, as they say, self-correct.

As a side note, I liked the Big Dummy, but it does not have the smooth
handling of a Clementine, the steering is comparatively tight and twitchy.

Half a year and a couple of thousand miles on this, Marks rack without
diving board, Nitto rod bolts to Tubus LM-1 clamps on fork crown and to
canti bolts

No issues with this - and it's absolutely rock solid, but it doesn't carry
near the load of the rando bag above. I only use this one for a small
trunk to stuff layers and weather shells.

Nothing (except the steel diving board) is bend in either setup, and every
component is naturally relaxed if the bolts were loosened.

Someone has described the Nitto rod bolts as "friction", but they're a lot
more secure than that, they are a swage of the aluminum rod into steel.

That actually sounds about right to me. Most of my pedal strikes have been
when cresting a short rise at a T onto the local trail that gets suddenly
steep the last two feet or so, so on my Clem the front wheel and rear are
often on different sides of that crest. Makes sense to me, hearing someone
else say it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-20 Thread masmojo
Actually, the problem I am having is more of an issue with uneven surfaces,
although the turning plays into it as well. The further the wheels are apart
the more likely that a bump or object can stick up between them and you pedal
can hit it while it rotates around. Generally, you you anticipate this and
level your pedals until you clear that area, but in said circumstance mentioned
earlier with getting the front wheel over objects, many times I will clear it
with my front wheel to find my pedals strike the object which tends to suddenly
stop me dead in my tracks! I used to race mountain bikes so I have fair bike
handling skills, I don't have this issue on any other bike and generally not
on the Clementine, but it does bite me from time to time. I've also scraped
the pedals on speed bumps which is odd, because I've never had an issue hitting
them before. Ive learned my lesson though, haven't done that in a while.

taking San Geronimo Ridge just before mile marker 12 which will
cut out the Pine Mountain loop but will cut out 9 miles, you still
get the Repack descent and we can all meet up at the Museum. To

In terms of time I think a 8am roll out would work. That gives us

[RBW] Finding fun in un-un-racing

2016-06-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
Being the team mechanic for the local High School Mountain Bike Racing team
has been pretty inspirational. Seeing the kids set goals and make
competitive progress has been an almost fountain of youth experience for
this 47 year old un-racer. At the end of season team party, the head coach
announced the kids one at a time, and among other accomplishments kept
referring to the kids' time in "the time trial". I didn't know what that
was. The coach pointed me to a Strava segment, called "BHS Time Trial".
 Here's a link: https://www.strava.com/segments/1963179

So, I went ahead and got my free Strava App on my iPhone and went up into
the Berkeley Hills to check it out. My goal was to beat the time of our
slightly plump 50-something Coach Gary. I was told he was in the 14:45
range. The ride is a short but steep climb, and it is extremely rocky.
Climbing out of the saddle is completely out of the question and it's a
physical challenge maintaining balance and keeping the bike pointed up the
hill. My first attempt was last week, the 11th, and I did it in 13:32. My
second attempt was this weekend, and I did it in 12:16. I'm told that
12:00 is the traditional cutoff for the A-Group of racers, so I've got a
measurable training goal. I'm not racing, but I'm not un-racing either, so
I'm going to call it "un-un-racing".

2016-06-20 Thread Jeremy Tavan
The thing I really love about the Clem is how well it fits me, which most
"normal" factory bikes do not. The long top tube, intended to make it work
well with swept-back bars I assume, means that with less-swept-back bars, I
can get a fit that works for me as a short-legged, long-torso individual.
It seems like such a minor thing, but it's been a revelation to just sit on
a bike and have everything fall where it ought to. I've been riding my Clem
almost exclusively for the last month and a half, and it's just been a joy.
I'm still tinkering to figure out the right combination of attachments to
really bring out the spirit of the bike, and it's made harder by it being
just so darn flexible. Too many options!

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar Suggestions for MTB Build?

2016-06-20 Thread Hugh Smitham
I love it. And I love how he decided to live outside the normal conventions
of society. And whynot a dbl stacked handle bar? I get so caught up on new
things and clever design (nothing wrong with that) but this guy just
figured out a design that worked for him. He didn't surf the internet for
that perfect bar, I admire that. Now back to browsing for a new great
handlebar.

Update: I went ahead and bought the bike back from Chris. I have a few
ideas about how to put several of the parts to good use, but the frameset
itself really is an extra. So, I am offering up for sale the frame + fork

Cycles road frameset in orange.
Here's a photo of the complete bike, although the complete build has
changed a bit since then

I'm open to negotiating for more of a complete build if that is what you

Re: [RBW] Re: Mark's/M18 failures?

2016-06-20 Thread Brad
Thanks for all that info Northof49cold. I'm a chronic rack overloader. I
figured that if I broke a rack, I'd get a new one. I hadn't considered how
dangerous the failure might be. I'm off to add a strap to the Nitto
Mini/basket combo on my Quickbeam. My other bike has a Haulin Colin rack
with Swift bag and Berthoud decaleur. It didn't occur to me that the
decaleur also serves as a safety device in case of rack failure, but I
guess that's an added bonus.

I rode a 52 with Boscos at RBW on Saturday, and it fit like a glove. So much so

well enough with the Choco-Moose bars as an "upright bike", but on the 52 I had
a lot more room to sit upright at the ends, or stretch forward to the front of
the Boscos. Live and learn!

[RBW] Re: New Sam-haver with rack questions!

2016-06-20 Thread Scott McLain
I have landed in the same space as Will. I am running a black tubus rear
rack on my AHH. My favorite front rack option is the nitto front rack.
There is not as much of a premium going to the nitto in the front and you
can pick them up used on the RBW forum. I like the small nitto rack
coupled with the Sackville small Trunksack.

The other consideration that is a little less rivy is the front
randoneering bag set up that works best with a front rack. I went back to
the trunksack when I added up the cost of going with the front randoneering
bag.

[RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-20 Thread Zed Martinez
I'd have to measure my roadster to compare, maybe I'll do so when I get
home. It's not a short bike, but not as long as the Clem certainly. I feel
like the BB drop plus the Sylvans is still most of it though, it's only
been a problem when I'm turning on a grade. With a BB drop of 67, and a
theoretical wheel radius with tire of 340, that leaves me 273mm clearance.
My crank arms are 170mm, so, that only leaves 103mm. I'm not sure how tall
the Sylvan is, but, that makes the ground clearance under 4" before I even
start turning, and with a pedal that wide, I guess I'm not surprised it
strikes if I'm making a 90º turn at the top of a few degrees grade. Not
sure if the chain stays really come into it. I'll measure my other upright
bike when I get home, it also has 170mm arms and Sylvans, but isn't nice
enough to spec its BB drop for me online. I can say it's already got a 6mm
advantage though, being 700cx35 instead of 650bx48. Ah well, not worth
speculating, I can just measure'em later and see, but I think my money is
more on the frame-proportoinal wheel sizes combined with those low drops.

[RBW] Re: Any benefits to the longer CS's?

2016-06-20 Thread masmojo
You know one thing that's been perplexing me on my Clementine is the amount of
pedal strike I've been getting. Odd because, the BB drop, crank length, etc.
isn't really measurably different from several other bikes I own that I have no
such issue with!?
Then this morning I was reading Zed's review and he mentioned pedal strike as
well! (And here I thought it was just me) Something about the way I built it!?
Then the light bulb went on! The long chain stays/wheel base are contribuing to
the pedal strike problem! Ah! Makes perfect sense now!

Thanks!. I'm a smaller rider 5'6" 150lb. I tried the B17 brooks on my
upright Cheviot, and could not get along with it. the Swift is just right
for me. I used to ride the Swift throughout college on an upright fixie, so
I've never really had any problems. If it starts being uncomfortable, I
still have the B17 on hand!

[RBW] For Deacon Patrick: a new cyclists' diet

2016-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
>From Sean Yates's autobio, describing his neo-pro days:

*In Paris, we’d go for a ride in the morning then laze around. My favorite
trick was to go to the patisserie along the road and buy a huge family
butter cake. It’s sort of a white cake, made of absolute pure fat. I’d mush
it all up, dump the lot into a salad bowl and sit there eating it with a
spoon like it was a bowl of muesli. *

*Preparing [the cake] was a total ritual for him, like a heroin addict
cooking up, says John Herety [fellow racer and flatmate], The cake would be
divided into squares, then the whole lot would go in the sort of bowl
reserved for family fruit salads. Then a large pot of fromage blanc would
go over the lot. That gave him the excuse to call it “yogurt cake’ like it
was some kind of health food.*

Well, it worked for him!

2016-06-20 Thread Marc Irwin
You won't believe how much you will continue to love your Hunq. I look
forward to every ride. Keep an eye on those pedals, I had both fail in the
middle of a two week trip last year. Fortunately there was a small town
hardware store nearby. They had some $5 MTB pedals which got me home. I
switched to the Grip King pedals with serviceable bearings.

Congrats and that's a gorgeous bike!!! Very close to how I would outfit
one if I had the funds to indulge in some really nice components.

Are you saying that's the original grey? I thought it was a completely
different color because it looks much lighter. Maybe it's the lighting in
your camera or maybe it's just the contrast difference between grey/cream
and grey/burgundy-orange.

I remember seing it some ten years ago, and also later. Maybe directed from the
iBob list. The site as such seems to be active with events scheduled in 2016,
but no bikes listed to the collection after the first Hilsen.

I’m not sure how this relates, but the compilation of photos seems to be almost
10 years old without recent update. I base this on the lack of Hillbornes in
the collection. The Hillborne has become a very popular model, and I think it
would be represented in such a large sample.

Before the Hillborne came out, the Atlantis and Ram formed the defining Axis of
Riv to me, and there are lots of those with a couple Bleriots and a good
handful of Herons on the photo compilation. It’s kind of a neat time capsule.
Notice no Bombadils either.

The site is really interesting. Where did it come from and is it strange that
it didn’t come up on this group’s radar back in the day. (Did it? I don’t

[RBW] New Bike Day - Hunqapillar FINALLY!

2016-06-20 Thread Philip Kim
Picked up my Hunq from Gravel & Grind (helped me put together the build) on
Saturday and finally got around to riding it this morning. Here are some
pictures before my morning commute from DC into Arlington.

This is a 48cm Hunqapillar, with mostly 10 speed XT parts except the SLX
rear derailleur, and White Industries crankset. Also Pauls canti's and
levers, Brooks Swift, and Nitto Seatpost.

Of unusual to note, I fitted this out with a Jones loop bar. I had
Clockwork Bikes make me a custom 31.8 quill stem. It's bare steel right
now, but I'll probably nickel plate it somewhere down the road. Wheels are
Compass Rat Traps set up tubeless on Atlas rims. Using the Riv's silver hub
rear, and the Shutter precision hub front. Built up by Gravel & Grind.

Got the Carradice bag from Gravel & Grind, fits all my work clothes, work
laptop, lunch, with room to spare. Strapped to my handlebar method - via
Ultraromance-style, and also seen on Mark Reimer's Atlantis. I really like
this set up, allows more cargo than a basket, and things don't fly around.

Can't recommend the guys at Gravel & Grind enough. Very chill, very
flexible, and very rad.

This bike rides soo awesome! I can really push it, but it's very
comfortable and stable. I was also surprised how light it feels considering
it's a stout frame. So stoked for many many years on this thing!

Thanks to all those I've privately messaged and all those who answered my
questions and all that. It really helped a lot.

I've been thinking of getting a Hunq for awhile now back when it was the
awesome grey and red color, so I got it colored in the old grey, but cream
accents to match the new Hunqapillar decals.
