[RBW] How Rivendells are received in your city ... (was: Rivvish Shop in Santa Barbara?)

2016-09-11 Thread Surlyprof
I've encountered almost all positive comments here in the bay area. After a
broken chain took out my rear derailleur, I took it to a lbs to have the hanger
readjusted. The kid who got to work on it was just beaming when I entrusted
"such a cool bike" to him to work on. He took extra care in getting it just
right.

My only negative experience was that my friend and previous riding partner quit
calling me to ride after I sold the Bianchi and got that "touring bike" as he
referred to it. I honestly think he feared that he'd feel the need to scrap
his $9000 BMC carbon if I ever beat him up a hill on my Hillborne.

[RBW] Re: tire pressures

2016-09-11 Thread Don Compton
Fortunately or unfortunately, I have another new Grand Bois 28 Cerf,so it
will be awhile until I need to purchase new tires. When I finally wear them
out I am going to buy some Compass 700x32 extra lights. Some complain about
the price of Grand Bois and Compass tires, but I get my money's worth
because of their long wear compared to typical expensive race tires.

That's why I wrote "the controls being mentioned, with the sometime

As my bell is on the stem and not actually on the bar, would that still be

You might say "I have a bell on my 12cm Nitto Pearl." You would need to say
that even if you added the term cockpit to the mix.

Exactly. Racing cars and airplanes include the seat in the cockpit. So you
would also include the saddle and the top tube when referencing a bicycle's
cockpit. A handlebar bag and its rack, and the light attached? Could be;
certainly they are in closer proximity than the seat and also right in
front of the pilot's--I mean to say rider's--nose. I don't see any benefit
into basically lumping everything but some parts of the frame and the
wheels into one term. No need to fret over what to include when you stick
to handlebars!

I realize the term is in general use here on RBW. Despite returning over
half a million google results, I don't think the term is all that common
in the regular, non-internet world. None of the cyclists, none of the
mechanics I know or have ever known have ever uttered the word cockpit when
talking about a bicycle. It may be that I just don't get around as much any
more, and I'm way behind on this, but I stand by my assertion that it is an
unnecessary and somewhat ill-fitting term when applied to a bicycle, a
simple, unenclosed machine. All of the other uses refer to spaces that are
pit-like, and partially or completely enclosed. If I ever get a recumbent
with a big fairing bubble I might say it has a cockpit.

One thing I am absolutely certain of: My Clementine does not have a cockpit.

I guess I'm a retro word grouch. As Garth almost said, a handlebar is a
handlebar is a handlebar. I rest my case.

[RBW] Another S3X hub

2016-09-11 Thread Patrick Moore
I complained about the lash when installed on my Riv fixie gofast, but
after all, for the price I paid, it's a very easy way to get climbing gears
without having to modify the stripped down gofast by adding, say,
derailleur, rear brake/cabling. Perhaps one day when I am old and decrepit,
I *will *add a rear brake and use the wonderful AM hub I picked up cheap,
but which has a 5 3/4" axle and so can't be used on the 130 mm OL '03 Riv
errand bike. (It will work on the 126 OL gofast.)

Anyway, I just found and ordered another S3X, this one set up for 130 mm
spacing, which I hope to have built into a wheel for the '03 and to use
with either a 17 t freewheel, or perhaps a 16/18 t DOS.

The weather has cooled down greatly, and I'd like to do some "longer" rides
-- long for me is 30 miles.*

I'd love to get a TF for the gofast -- 100% and 25% reduction, and -- so it
is said -- very little lash, but the one I saw on eBay built into an old
British 27" club wheel has a $650 buy it now price.

Finally, glad I sold all of that stuff -- it allowed me to buy this hub and
set aside cash for a wheel build.

Re: [RBW] Re: tire pressures

2016-09-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, John. I read Berto's article -- was it published in Bicycling? --
years ago, but I've never bothered to be as exact as the method entails. My
thumbs and forefingers are pretty well educated by now, and I am thinking
that even 65/70 for the Elk Passes is a wee bit high for my taste, unless I
carry a heavy rear load. I think 60/65 or what my fingers feel when the
pump reads those numbers might be smoother.

Segue: Nodding to Eric's mental Citroen, I briefly owned a 2 CV-derived
Acadian van, which has such supple suspension that I could drive at 15-20
mph over the sharp bumps installed in parking lots without undue jarring.
More gradual bumps, as on 25 mph-limit roads, could be taken at 35-40 with
no undue jounce or bounce. And, the van would carry 4 58 c-c bikes with
front wheels installed and saddles and bars in proper places.

Re: [RBW] Re: tire pressures

2016-09-11 Thread Patrick Moore
I find that even good bike shops pump tires much too hard; there is a "too
hard" even for cheap Kendas. When I pump tires for customers or friends, I
try to leave a wee bit of cush -- the sweet spot is vanishingly small with
cheap, thick-sidewalled tires.

Odd: I used otherwise very decent 559 X 32 Paselas for many years and
miles, and found that they too had a small sweet spot between harsh and
spongy. Kojaks are far better in this regard, and the Elk Passes better
yet. Paselas rolled well if you hit the spot, though. (Paselas also flat
much more easily, their sidewalls tear and wear and degradef easily, and
skidding will peal off chunks of tread. My experience.)

Re: [RBW] Re: tire pressures

2016-09-11 Thread Patrick Moore
175 rider + bike at sub 20 and another sub 25. Elk Pass tires, measuring
~27 and ~29 respectively; run at ~65-70. I don't sweat digits f/r, but I do
use the pinch test to get front a wee bit softer. In fact, were it not for
the gauge on the pump, which for all I know may be defective, I'd just go
by feel -- indeed, I do, since the reported pressures are chosen because
they feel right to my fingers.

When I used 23 mm tires on these bikes, I'd pump those to~80/85 or 80/90.

51 mm Furious Freds with at least half miles on sandy dirt: ~18/22 or
20/25. I'm pretty sure that the pump gauge reads too high, and I
occasionally check with my low pressure gauge.

I remember long ago, circa 1972, learning to pump my Raleigh Sprite's cheap
27 X 1 1/4 tires to the 70 psi marked on the sidewall. What a difference!
Higher pressures *certainly do* improve rolling, at least the feel (and no,
not any goddam buzz; they were easier to pedal and went faster) compared to
too soft -- I've verified this any number of times with cheap tires with
heavy sidewalls. The roads in question ranged from super smooth to normally
worn, nothing terrible or chipseal.

Question: just went out to check tires with gauges and found that the high
pressure one -- to 160 psi; steel and brass -- doesn't register anything
despite an open valve core and road pressures as above. Does anyone have
any idea about what might be wrong with it, and how to fix it?

Does anyone have a road presta gauge, reasonably accurate, to trade for
something or sell for a few bucks?

Thanks.

2016-09-11 Thread Tim Butterfield
Mark,

The term 'handlebars' also refers to a specific component of the cockpit.
Some bars as you referred to them may include other components in the area,
but not all bikes have that setup. Shifters may or may not be on the
bars. Down tube shifters? As my bell is on the stem and not actually on
the bar, would that still be part of your bar setup definition? It makes
me wonder where the term boundary might be, whether it is only those items
mounted on the bar itself or also to other items in the general area.

I agree, different strokes. Then again, it does take a while for new
applications of words to become common place. Some disagreement with the
usage should not be unexpected even after it becomes common.

I use an equestrian helmet. They are good looking, have a small visor
(about an inch) so rain is deflected, and are built to stronger standards
(horses are higher from the ground and have hooves) than typical bicycle
stock. The trick is to find one large enough, the horsey set tends to be
female, and one with good ventilation. My current helmet is a large Troxel
school model (cost = $35 and built like a tank). My next will be a L/XL
Ovation Protege (cost = $45). I'll get the Ovation b/c the ventilation is
better and the interior suspension is more tunable. In either brand, the
liner removes for washing. Removeable liners are a a nice feature.

I do not particularly like bicycle helmets (I have a $200 Giro). Too much
slipstream fru-fru. Reminds me of the lycra folks.

Also, I think of 'user interface' as belonging to an object, but not to the
area around that object. Think of the multiple user interfaces in a
control room. To build on that thought a bit more, think of the cockpit of
a small sailboat. The only instrument may be the compass, if that, but
there may be lots of mechanical controls, rudder, lines/sheets, winches,
etc. As mentioned, a bicycle cockpit may have multiple levers (bars,
brakes, shifters, etc.) with or without any instruments. I cannot think of
a single other word either that better encompasses the entire area around
the handlebars. If there is a better word for a "relatively small area
containing mostly mechanical controls with optional instruments," what
might it be? Especially in aviation parlance, once that area is no longer
considered small, it is often referred to as the flight deck and not just a
cockpit.

offered to let me ride one but I didn't want to test out the unfamiliar
Brooklyn streets.

Regards,
Richard

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-11 Thread Lungimsam
I don't like riding with a helmet when it is Spring/summer/fall. Too hot.

However, I really like wearing a helmet in the rain, and in the winter to
keep the wintry blast off my head.

I have a 2009 helmet that I like. But the outer plastic is starting to lift
away from the Styrofoam body.

But my problem is that most helmets are made with such a high dome they
make me look funny when I wear them. I have tried others that looked low
dome, but still look high dome on me.

So I would look for something with a flat, low dome. Anyone know of one
that doesn't cost over 60$US?

I don't know why no one has developed a more "normal" looking helmet, with
low dome, meaning something that looks like regular clothes, and not all
science fiction like most helmets look.

[RBW] Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-11 Thread Will Ashe
I've had a Giro Aspect for the last couple years that I really like. It's very
light like the racing models but without the fins and bright colors. It is
rather expensive, but they do go on sale quite often.

On my 4th Bell Metro variant. I like the venting, I like the bill, I'm
naked without the helmet mirror, I like the blinkie mounts.
I run separate lights on my bike and turn the helmet blinkies on and off
for traffic signals and to get a driver's attention.
I still can't believe how many light-less bikes I see on the road, even at
dusk and dawn

it sure simplifies the discussion about the difference between a moustache

[RBW] tire pressures

2016-09-11 Thread Fullylugged
I rode a perm yesterday on my 95 Road which is converted to 650B. It has Grand
Bois Oursons (35 mm +/-) and I had 50 lbs front and 60 rear. Really nice over
the shake-and-bake chip seal, and according to the Berto pressure app, I could
have run even lower pressure.
