[RBW] Re: Brooks b17 select - opinions?

2016-09-14 Thread IanA
I can speak to two standard B17's and one Professional. I bought the first
B17 in 2008 (I think) and it has around 40,000km under my bum. It is
definitely characterful, but still is firm and usable (I did install a
longer bolt for extra stretch). The second B17 was bought around the same
time and has far less mileage, but has stretched more and I'm thinking of
drilling and lacing it.

The Professional (standard rivets, brown) was bought 2014(ish) ans has been
used on some metric centuries and lots of commuting miles. I love that
saddle and don't recall adjusting it more than once. I will admit that it
was only 40 euros or so as I bought it on sale from Germany. I find the
Professional fits somewhat like a slightly narrower B17 - the skirt is less
intrusive, but the top feels as wide as a B17. The leather feels thicker
than the B17 IMO.

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-14 Thread Lungimsam
I know nothing about bike making and merchandizing. That said, I'd vote for:

Three road bikes at all three weightpoints:
1.700c/650b Roadeo
2. Atlantis (replaces Hunq)
3. Hilsen (replaces Sam)

Mixte:
4. Glorious (if youre gonna do a mixte, might as well do it up)

5. Customs? RBW would know if it is worth it or not to continue with customs.

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-14 Thread drew
I think hunq, cheviot and roadeo would cover almost all bases. Or just an
Atlantis or sam are versatile enough to do most of what we all want and need.

But Yeah it seems like it's more of a budgetary question rather than an overlap
one. Right now there is almost an expensive and cheap version of each bike.
Atlantis-Joe
Hunq-Clem
Homer-Sam
Cheviot-Clem L
Roadeo- upcoming road Clem.

it's a lot of models and I get how it's grown to this point, but In my head it
makes sense to gradually move everything to the sam model. Nice looking, very
well made, yet more reasonably priced bikes. One super refined model for each
purpose. Lugs, nice paint, same names and geometry, but with silver stuff and
made at maxway.

Likely, a Taiwan made Atlantis will never happen, and i will be sad if it does.
The current lineup almost seems like it is competing with itself, though.

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-14 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Tim, I like your list and was expecting a topic like this to pop up soon after
the note from Grant do thanks! :)

My list (tonight - might be different tomorrow);

1. Atlantis or Hunq
2. AHH
3. Appaloosa
4. Cheviot
5. Clem/time

Things I'd be thinking about in needing down;

Price slots
Historic sales volume
Frame building sources capacity

Atlantis is a sentimental pick and I agree with Tim it's the quintessential
Riv, at the same time its very all rounder-ness makes it tough to go head to
head with other bikes that are set up according to their niche (ie. not as
sporty as a Homer, not as robust as a Hunq, not as quirky as the Chev, not as
'cheap' as the Clem... ). I could see the Atlantis going special order and the
popular Hunq remaining as the production tough Riv.

Homer is the flagship and can be dressed up pretty road oriented if desired.

Appaloosa vs the Sam is a pick em for me, I've seen the new Appaloosa at Gravel
and Grind and demo'd a Sam years ago. App gets my nod because it aligns to the
new long chainstay philosophy and has the similar price point for completes.
Also maybe it's a misconception but the Sam seems closer to the Homer so the
App allows greater division of models in my mind.

Cheviot because it seems like Grant takes every opportunity to rave about it...
And they seem to sell out.

Clem/tine because of their price point/value to customer is so good, it's the
'gateway drug' or the justifiable second Riv/kids/spouses Riv.

I don't see why the rest of the Waterford built models couldn't be available on
an build to order status, keep the sizing/geo stock and the prices should be
pretty close to current listing. My list does limit the stock MUSA offerings
to 2 of 5 which seems skewed but I think makes business sense.

My two cents, fun exercise. Like the 'one bike' discussion for an individual
writ large.

Tony

If they keep all of the current offerings on a "built to order basis", I
can see them only stocking the Sam, Clem/Clementine, Appaloosa & Cheviot.
That gives them budget versions of a road bike, an all-purpose bike, a
touring bike and a mixte. That's assuming a Sam has light enough tubing
and the Appaloosa has heavy enough tubing.

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-14 Thread Surlyprof
I've got a canti-Hillborne and would tend to agree with Will. It is the
most comfortable bike I've ever owned and the shorter wheelbase makes it
great all-arounder on the road-ish side. I thought I'd want to trade it in
for an Appaloosa. However, the more I considered it, the more I thought
the Hillborne does what I do, about 60% road and 40% trail. I view the
Hilson the same way, as an all-arounder on the road-ish side. I see the
Atlantis, Hunq and Appaloosa as being more all-arounder on the trail side.
With the Hillborne, I can put on a sturdier wheelset with knobbies for
trail but when I put on the lighter wheelset for road, I get a fun, lively
ride. Now, if they could eek out a little more tire clearance (like the
Appaloosa), that would be a huge winner in my book. Clems probably need to
stay as "a gateway Riv". Plus, they're really fun.

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-14 Thread Bill M.
Sorry, can't agree. The Roadeo is set up to maximize clearance with a
standard reach caliper. Stretching it to bigger rubber would mean
different brakes, and basically make it a slightly lighter Hilsen. Too
much overlap there. IMO 28 - 33 mm is a sweet spot for a fast,
comfortable, paved road, club-sport-not-quite-a-racing bike.

I've been thinking about having a custom frame built. Every time I take a
stab at the geometry I'd want, then nudge it back to what can actually be
built without running into clearance problems, I wind up with something
that might as well be a Roadeo.

As for what Riv should keep, IMO the core is:
Roadeo
Atlantis
Homer
Sam
Anything else could rotate in and out of the batting order. Can one bike
sit in the middle of the Hunq/Joe/Clem/Cheviot space as an affordable rough
stuff / commuter / shopper / budget tourer / lowered top tube bike?

[RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-14 Thread dstein
I am a proud Hunqapillar owner and would say that one should stay since it
is the best off road option. Though assuming the hunqapillar, rodeo,
atlantis, and AHH are all made to order and don't take up stock, couldn't
we leave those off the wish list as it's not much extra effort for
Rivendell to keep offering them? If so then it seems it boils down to:

Sam Hillborne
Appaloosa
Clem Smith Jr/Clementine
Cheviot

I think it's kinda between the SH and Appaloosa and Clem/Clementime vs. the
Cheviot. In which case I think the Cheviot and Appaloosa could cede to the
SH and Clem/Clementine. Though if a road-y version of a Clem is coming that
would add a little complexity.

I think Hillborne needs to on the list, particularly if they go back to

Patrick, try Nikwax on the leather mud flap, top of Brooks saddle, etc. The
Nikwax will help make it near waterproof (for a while) and won't attract

 thicker.
I never stopped to think about it, but now that you mention it, that must
be the reason I'm slow. The darn mudguard is creating too much wind
 resistance!!!

BTW, a flexible mudguard might actually increase the area of coverage
upwards, assuming your fenders are long enough. If they aren't, then you'd
need a stiffer one to essentially elongate the fender.

Re: [RBW] Re: Brooks b17 select - opinions?

2016-09-14 Thread Cameron Murphy
Rene,

I would certainly proofhide any saddles I wanted to store long term. The
tanning process leaches a lot of the natural oils out of the leather, which
are then replaced to some degree at later stages at the tannery before
being sent off to Brooks. As far as I know, Brooks doesn't do any further
treatment to the hides before shipping the saddles off. Exposure to air
over time will cause some lighter oil fractions to evaporate, and others to
oxidize, forming things closer to varnish or wax than oil. The goal of
dressings like proofhide is to replace those oils, and by doing so, protect
the leather fibers themselves from drying out and or oxidizing, and keeping
the leather somewhat pliable. Left perfectly alone, depending on
temperature and humidity, the leather will eventually dry out and become
brittle and or crack. ("Eventually" may be years or multiple decades
depending on conditions, and initial leather quality and tanning) Some of
that damage can be undone by treatments like proofhide at a later date, but
it would be best to avoid the damage in the first place. I would
proofhide them before storage, and if possible, give them another light
coat every year or two.

[RBW] Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-14 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
In Grants email that went out yesterday he said that they're going to be
discontinuing some models because there's not room to stock them all.
Soo.this should be a fun exercise (and for many of us a little gut
wrenching). Let's decide which bikes to keep and which to wave a fond farewell
to, remembering, of course, that I'm sure you could always get any of the
models as a custom. Grant didn't say how many they'd be keeping so on your
response you can either: 1. Say how many different types of bikes to stock, and
which ones, or 2. Rank them in order, with #1 being the bike they absolutely
must stock. Here's my list:

Atlantis
A. Homer Hilsen
Roadeo
Joe Appaloosa
Clem Smith Jr.
Clementine/Clem Smith Jr. L-Type

My (probably flawed) reasoning:
Atlantis must always be there. It's the quintessential Riv. Hilsen is an
awesome "country bike". Roadeo fills the "go fast" category. Clem is the one
for rough stuff and Clementine takes care of the mixte/step-through, at a very
good price. And the Joe Appaloosa is, for lack of a better description, the
"poor man's Atlantis.

Full disclosure: I currently have a Hilsen, Roadeo, Hunqapillar, and my
girlfriend has a Sam, with a tandem in the oven.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts on Cambium?

2016-09-14 Thread Bob K.
This summer, after riding B17s exclusively for over a decade, I decided to try
out a narrower saddle. There was an old Specialized Comp 143 lying around my
school's bike shop, so I slapped it on my late 80s Rockhopper before a
three-day camping trip on the VA Mountain Bike Trail in the Jefferson National
Forest. The first ten or so miles were pretty painful, but the next 120 were
pure bliss.

Upon returning home, my vanity took over and even though it was so comfortable,
I couldn't bring myself to swap it onto my Sam. It just didn't "feel" right
even though it did! I kept riding with the saggy and splayed-out B17 that I
desperately need to address, trying to fight back the memories of the ugly
saddle's comforts, when it occurred to me that trying out a C15 might be a good
call, so I got one on loan from my LBS this past week. Cost me $25, but after
hearing mixed reviews I wasn't sure I'd like it, so I decided to go the demo
route.

On first look, the shape was perfect, almost exactly like the plastic
Specialized saddle, but the first ride was awful. I had a bunch of pain from
the firmer feel, and everything felt just plain wrong. I decided to give it the
full week, though. Very much to my surprise, after some slight adjustments and
a couple of "longer" rides, it felt incredible! I could hardly believe the
transformation. I know others have had some issues with durability, but I might
take the plunge anyway as I'm worn out on messing around with leather. I'm
thinking the C15 carved will be the sweet spot since it offers a bit more flex.
I'll report back once I pinch enough pennies to snag one.

Bob

[RBW] Re: tire pressures

2016-09-14 Thread John Hawrylak
The values I posted, 47/54 psig were INCORRECT for a 38mm tire. I
mistakenly used the pressures calculated for a 35mm tire. I apologize.

The pressure for the 203lb rider & bike for 38mm
are 40psig F, 48psig R,
The pressures for the 203lb with 5lb extra on the Front for 38mm are
42psig F, 48psig R

Both assume a 45%/55% distribution.

Re: [RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-14 Thread Scott Henry
My problem with helmets is that I have a w-i-d-e head. I measure out to 7
1/2 or 7 3/4 for a ball cap, so I guess big and wide, not a good combo. I
feel sorry for Mom, I guess Dad too.

Helmets tend to fit but push into the sides of my head and end up giving
headaches. So rarely do I wear them. When required at events I usually
end up in a hairnet. Most organizers don't specify the TYPE of helmet
that is required, only that a helmet must be worn.

I don't have the actual name of the helmet, but I did find one of the Bell
helmets that fit comfortably. To bad it was the race helmet with the
integrated faceshield, I looked like one of the Spaceballs guys.

[RBW] Re: WTB/WTT: Nitto Pearl Stem 80 mm/25.4 and Dura Ace 7410 or similar rear skewer 126 or 130.

2016-09-14 Thread Ryan Fleming
Hi Patrick

I have a pearl on my allrounder, and a Nitto Tech Deluxe on my PX-10. I
feel the finish is the samesuperb and both stems are cold-forged. Only
thing really missing is the Pearl logo.Clamp is a little different too and
I believe the quill is shorter (150mm for Pearl vs 190mm for TD) Honestly
, they're both absolutely elegant stems. If you can't find a suitable Pearl
and it's a must-have I feel that they probably can still be found on online
sites that do a lot of NJS Nitto, MKS volume.

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-14 Thread John Bokman
I have a Bell Citi helmet in loud yellow with a visor. I like the visor
because I use it to attach my "Take a Look" mirror, which I've really come
to depend on after getting used to it. (Yes, it took me quite a while to
get used to a rear view mirror sticking off the end of my helmet.)

However, a problem with the helmet, at least for my head: when riding at
speed (say down a long descent), the back of my head, near the ears, begins
to hurt. I think this is caused by wind getting under the visor and thus
shifting the helmet ever so slightly on my head, but I can't be sure. Which
makes me want to take the visor off. But then I loose my mirror. (I have
tried the mirror on glasses and don't like it nearly as much as helmet
mounted.)

Does anyone else have this problem with their helmet?

I also ordered one online to make sure I had a spare one should I need in

the new ones produced now.

The B17 Selects have thicker leather that doesn't stretch as easily, which
is a good thing. They still break-in and get really comfortable, just takes
more time. Mine's about 3 years old also and I've never had to adjust the

This is my impression too. I have two older B17's that are much more stout

Select models, or I wish they would make their normal models just as good

Re: [RBW] Re: New fenders (again!) for the '03 Curt -- 26" X 50 mm Berthouds.

2016-09-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. The install has been improved since that post.

The Berthoud flap is my choice; but our "monsoon" season (9" average/year
citywide; 14" near mountains, 5" at extreme westside) is running out and I
may just wait and see if I can't find a cheap pair of boots or a cheap
leather bag at Goodwill and make my own.

I did this with one of the earlier Honjo fender sets for this same bike,
some 5-6 years ago -- I amputated some 4" off the bottom of the front
fender to avoid interference with our bus bike racks, then overcompensated
with a huge10" long and 8" wide leather flap, home made. I greased it so
heavily that the stuff still rubbed off on my fingers after 2 years or so
of use. The trouble with so much grease is that it picked up fine grit, and
the thing was always slightly disreputable even after the bike was cleaned.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Paselas

2016-09-14 Thread Ryan Fleming
For a city-commuter bike , the tourguard feature is not a terrible idea,
and if you get a folding version , the tire rides quite nicely and is not
super heavy.

My experience with the 3 sets of compass tires (26 X 1.5 McClure Pass
standard...don't think extralight is even an option and 700 X 32 Stampede
Pass extralight) is that they do have a lovely supple ride but you
sacrifice durability to get this. The McClures have flatted twice in 3-400
kilometers of commuting and...dare I say this...I am fairly lucky when it
comes to flats...sometimes I've even gone a season or 2 without flats ... a
season being maybe 2500-3500 kilometers. You high-mileage guys will laugh,
but l still think that the Paselas are excellent tires and I've been
using Tourguard versions for at least 10 years. The Compass tires Jan makes
are a great product but not perhaps the best in terms of flat protection
for the mean streets of Winnipeg . To be fair I don't think that was Jan's
intent.

Re: [RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-14 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I have a Giro Aspect and Giro Reverb - the former looks to have an
exorbitant list price of $175 but I'm positive I didn't pay that much, my
recollection is that my price was similar to the price of the Reverb, which
was $60.

I like these helmets because they don't have a super-racy profile, they fit
my medium-large head nicely, and they have a detachable soft brim that
looks like you have a short brim cycling cap on underneath. I can't wear
those caps for most of the year - too hot, but I appreciate the brim for
the bit of shade it gives my eyes. The Reverb is ventilated, but not too
much, so it's more of my winter helmet now, while the Aspect has a bit more
ventilation.

I think on Monday (Sep 12) I was browsing Amazon (is there anything they

I just checked now , and now they say they have 3...$171.00 - 10% discount

I ordered one for my Riv custom mixte back in February...when I saw this

so I don't have to worry about ordering one.

I have a Brooks standard on my X0-1 and 2 B-17 specials on my 2 other

[RBW] WTB/WTT: Nitto Pearl Stem 80 mm/25.4 and Dura Ace 7410 or similar rear skewer 126 or 130.

2016-09-14 Thread Patrick Moore
I was surprised to see that these stems are still on the market, but I
wonder if a lister has a used one available. My '99 is fretting because it
only has one of those old Specialized "Aero" stems that Rivendell used to
sell 20 years ago, while the '03 sports the Pearl.

Again, 80 mm and 25.4, tho' if the price is right, I'll consider a 26.0.

The neat thing about buying onlist is that you become part of that great
cosmic gyre of bicycle buying and selling: the bits I've been selling
transmogrify into new stuff for my bikes, and will eventually be sold on,
thus perpetuating the eternal *samsara* of upgrading.

Question: Are Technomic Deluxes of the same quality, feature, and finish as
the Pearls?

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-14 Thread John
My POC Octal AVIP MIPS helmet is the best ventilated helmet I've tried so
far, that I really, really like.

Deacon is not wrong, helmets won't stop the contrecoup brain injuries.

But I would rather hit my head on a car or the road or a rock, or whatever,
with a helmet on my head than to hit something without one.

I'm hoping the MIPS feature in my POC Octal AVIP MIPS helmet will provide
some additional protection in a collision, and I hope the orange color
helps make me more visible on the road.

If wearing a helmet does in fact cause some riders to ride more recklessly,
well then, there's no helping some people. I know I don't ride around
blowing through stoplights just because I'm wearing my helmet.

My wife treats people with traumatic brain injuries, and she says if you
did what she does, you wouldn't ride without one. But I'm sure she herself
is somewhat traumatized by seeing her patients.

Just my $0.02,

John

So true, Kai. I was run off the road once and the frame caught a roadside

Somehow I managed to flip over, land on my back and slide down the hillside to

Still getting a new helmet, though!

[RBW] Re: Compass Snoqualmie Pass 700x44

2016-09-14 Thread Garth

Could someone please measure the aspect height of the tire ? The easiest
way I found is to look up your rim height from the mfr. and then with some
calipers measure both the rim and tire as one, as if you were going to
measure it between your thumb and index finger. Subtract that from the rim
height.

Thank Yuh !
