[RBW] Re: An un-obstructive front handle bar bag for boscos?

2016-11-27 Thread Sky Coulter
Annie,

There's a handlebar bag I've seen a couple times on ebay that might fit the
bill, though I've never used it and have no idea of the quality:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Grand-Bois-Decaleur-Handlebag-CLASSIC-FRENCH-Touring-Randonneur-Bag-Bracket-/201657768846?hash=item2ef3bd5b8e:g:ce0AAOSwLVZV54Ud

It comes with a bracket to attach it to the stem, is 10x7x8, and costs 60
dolllars.

Re: [RBW] A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-11-27 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Alex Cycle in Japan has a number of Ostrich bags that fit the F15. The US
has a very favorable exchange rate with the Yen these days.

I'm still debating whether the F15 or the Klickfix mount such as Swift
uses. Either way, I'm reluctant to need a rack for a front bag as I would
like to move the bag from bike to bike quickly, sans tools. With a Klickfix
one could have base mounts on several bikes, but I don't care for the
visual of a mount in bars when I'm not using the bag.

In my mind, some strong, rectangular magnetic strips on the bar, either
side of the stem, would be less noticeable sans bag. The bag would have
rectangular receivers, as well as traditional bar straps. There are a
number of engineering design approaches. It's having the tools to make them
that is rub - or pay a machinist shop to make them!

Cheers,

I would love to have the Acorn mini rando, too, but Ron decided not to
produce it any more. Likely sales didn't justify the time needed to produce
a small bag with so many details.

If there is one up for sale I'm certainly willing to make an offer.

[RBW] Re: Hillborne tire clearance

2016-11-27 Thread Surlyprof
I use 700x40mm Mondials (measures 39.5) with sks fenders and 45mm Smart
Sams without fenders. The Smart Sams rubbed occasionally on a Pletscher
double kickstand when I cranked the pedals. I swapped it out for a single
and had no further problems.

[RBW] Re: Anyone seen that Rosco Bunbaloosa in person?

2016-11-27 Thread Surlyprof
I only saw the frameset a couple of months ago at Riv. Looked like it had
bigger tire clearance than the Hillborne-fork-based Roscoes have. It was
one of the best looking mixtes I've ever seen. Between the lower bar, grab
handle bar, clearance for wider tires and that beautiful, matte blue, I
thought it would be an outstanding city bike (trails, too). I didn't take
a picture then because I wasn't sure if it was still a secret. Seeing the
shot on FB, it looks even better built up. Wish I could talk the wife into
it so I would have permanent access.

[RBW] Re: An un-obstructive front handle bar bag for boscos?

2016-11-27 Thread anniebikes
Everyone has been most helpful! I think it's very interesting (and little
annoying) that the bosco bars have so much hand real estate yet traditional
handle bar bags will only work, using a bracket which offsets it just
enough to allow full hand movement across the bar. I now understand why
Rivendell likes the front basket...I guess to completely free up the front
bar, but leave items within reach? I don't think there's an easy solution
for me. I'll most likely fashion what I want.

[RBW] Re: Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-27 Thread Surlyprof
I would lean toward the Sam only because you sound like you're planning
mostly road riding and only some trails. I agree with Evan's assessment
that the Sam is a little more spritely due to the shorter wheelbase and
slightly lighter tubing (I think). I've got a 56 canti-Sam (in the older,
brighter, metallic orange) and I ride it on my daily mixed terrain commute
loaded with all my books, teaching and office supplies and it handles it
like a champ. On the weekends, I lose the load and put on a lighter
wheelset for road rides so I can enjoy that spritely feel. I've also
ridden mountain trails with a set of 45cm Smart Sams (no fenders) which is
also fun. I've only had one short Appaloosa test ride in the rain and it
did feel fantastic. Smooth, stable and, dare I say, graceful. I thought I
might want to buy the Joe and sell the Sam with the intent of riding more
trails with the capacity for fatter tires. Decided to keep the Sam since I
ride roads a little more often than trails.

Good decision to have. I'm confident you'll be thrilled with either since
you can't go wrong either way.

[RBW] Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-27 Thread Joe Bernard
My PBH is somewhere around 79-80, and I would have guessed I needed a 46 Joe,
too. Wrong! I rode a 51 (light blue) with dropbars, it was perfect, I bought
it. I've since switched to Choco-Moose bars, also perfect. I'm not a big fan of
the Sam orange, either; if you like the blue Joe get it now 'cause that color
is discontinued. Trust me on this, Joe Appaloosa is a wonderful bicycle.

I vote for Sam. It's a tad lighter, so its ride is apt to be a bit more

[RBW] FS: Full Set of Madden Adventure Cycling Panniers

2016-11-27 Thread Eric Norris
I’ve gone in a different (waxed canvas) direction with my panniers, so these
are in need of a new home. Full set of matched front and rear panniers. Nicely
constructed, lots of pockets, easy on and off the bike.

Photos here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskHvQejL

Lightly used—these came with a bike I purchased about a year ago. I’ve used the
rear bags for one three-day tour, and the full set was used a few times by the
previous owner.

Not sure what the price on these is—how does $200 shipped in the CONUS sound?

Email me if you have any questions or want to make an offer below $200.

PayPal preferred.

[RBW] Re: Hillborne tire clearance

2016-11-27 Thread Marc40a
Tim, I run 38mm Barlow's Pass with longboards and for the sake of fender
coverage, I wouldn't go wider. Fenders do their job best with some extra width.
P50s would be a better match for a tire beyond 38mm.

Regarding the max with no fenders, I wouldn't go beyond 45mm. I ran Smart Sams
last summer and it was a tight fit.

All my experience is with 700cc tires, so ymmv.

[RBW] Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-27 Thread Ashwath Akirekadu
Visited Rivendell HQ earlier this week. It was really hard to squeeze time
for it, but I thought I owed myself a ride on a real Riv before committing
to San Marcos project. It was a lovely experience. Had planned on
spending an hour. Ended up spending more than 4 hours ;). I was
discussing Sam H vs San M with one of the associates. At some point Grant
yelled from his office "Sam is just better".Rode 51cm Sam for an hour.
In the end my feeling was that there just can't be a single way Marcos
could possibly better.

I should have purchased a Sam frame and left. I was curious about the
Choco-Moose bar that was on a Jeo. To try the handlebar I took Joe for a
quick ride. What a mistake :D Joe was quite different and felt strangely
pleasant.

It was getting late, so I left decision pending.

The color might also have played a role why I didn't decide on Sam then and
there. While I loved Sam, I didn't like the new Orange color.I like
the blue color of Joe. Looking at Joe's geometry though, 46cm seems to be
my size (PBH 81cm) which has 26" wheel. Aesthetically I don't prefer
wheels that small.

Here's my planned usage for the new bike: Ride to work once a week (46
miles roundtrip). Around the town, farmers market. Weekend overnight
camping rides 4-5 times a year. Sometime in next 5 years I'm hoping to
ride on Dalton Highway for a week to 10 days.

Thoughts on which way I should go?
Will 51cm Joe (which works with 650B) be too big for me?
If I want a blue Sam, how frequently such frames show up on the used market?

Thanks!

PS: my posts making through moderator approval has been a hit or miss.
Really hoping this one gets a pass!

Scott,
Those are great photographs of your beautiful bike. The mountains appear to be
snow covered already! Brrr. Enjoy winter, however you spend it!

I'm no expert but the Salsa with the longer TT will be a better fit for
you. There is only so much you can do with stem length and bars.

[RBW] FS: map/ahearne-nitto-Paul-shimano cockpit

2016-11-27 Thread drew
Have a lightly used cockpit. Map ahearne bars in the wider size, nitto tallux
stem, silver Paul thumbies with shimano shifters, shimano mtb levers and nitto
bar end plugs. All in good-newish condition. Some minor insertion marks on the
stem. Newbaums wrapped and shellacked.

I'd like to sell it all together. Estimating retail to be around 250$, so I'm
Thinking 175$ shipped.

Pics to come

[RBW] Nice Fall Ride

2016-11-27 Thread Scott McLain
You guys inspired me to go for a ride over the Thanksgiving Day break. I
was also inspired by the nasty weather we are expected to get this next
week in the Rocky's. It was a classic un-racer ride for the pleasure of
riding, going 25 miles at 12 miles per hour. Wearing my blue jeans and
flannel shirt in between 45 and 50 degrees F. It was a wonderful way to
enjoy the last bit of nice weather before old man winter makes it a bit
more of a challenge.

I recently built up a dyno front wheel and installed lights on my Homer.
This was my first trip beyond commuting with this set up. I didn't really
notice any drag.

Here are some pictures:
https://flic.kr/p/Nqnm3e
https://flic.kr/p/PAxtJb
https://flic.kr/p/P6fW1S

More musings..
As I get older, I more appreciate the natural cycles of summer and winter.
It is so much of what makes life interesting and helps remind us of how
wonderful the world is when the spring returns and the world blooms
renewed. Winter is a time for rest and reading and learning. That is why
I am a little anti fat bike. Take the winter and do something else,
something different. Go skiing, or snowshoeing. Learn to play the guitar.
Then when spring returns, you can return to the bike with a passion
renewed.

I may have identified a candidate. The Salsa Marrakesh, in "flat bar" flavor.
The size large would fit me, and it has a 63cm top tube. It has a 1-1/8"
threadless steerer, but adapters exist that would allow me to use the Nitto
Bullmoose bars. It has disc brakes, which I like. It's $1600 for a complete,
which is way more than I'd like to spend, but pretty reasonable for a complete
bike these days. I'd swap out half the stock parts, so maybe a frameset is the
way to go. With parts on hand, I'd be into it about $900. Hmmm...

[RBW] WTB - 110mm or 113mm BB Spindle.

2016-11-27 Thread John Hawrylak
WTB a 110mm or 113mm BB spindle for a Sugino XD-2 (from RBW) for use on a
1988 Schwinn (Panasonic) Voyageur, having normal chainstays.
Currently have a Biopace crank with a 121.5mm spindle. Spindle width is
excessive for the XD-2
Prefer not to change out existing and am OK with cup & cones.

Prefer a NOS or used (no galling, pits or marks on the races) 1970-1980's
Shimano type

Thought I would try and shake the branches here and see if anything falls
out. Could always go with YST, but prefer the nice shiny finish. RBW has
a Specialized BB spindle, but only in 115 or 122mm. The 115mm is a tad
wider than I would like.

Mountain monster cross frameset (forget name) and that too is nice,

[RBW] Roof-rack-riv-sighting in Hershey, PA

2016-11-27 Thread Mark Wilkins
Today (27 Nov), I stopped in at Troegs Brewing in Hershey to pick up a
special bourbon-barrel aged version of their Russian imperial stout.

Saw a Jetta wagon in the parking lot with a two Rivs on the rack: one
custom (I think), one Cheviot, both orange (!).

Anyway, I spent several minutes admiring both. Hope you enjoyed the beer
at Troegs!

I thought the way this light is mounted is neat. Does anybody know what
brand is it?

2016-11-27 Thread Mike Williams
Hey Annie, I dont have one, but saw one yesterday and the Detours ' Rainier
Handlebar duffle bag' looked really neat. It has some well designed zippers/
pockets on the side and inside and it looks like it goes on/ off in a cinch;
with 2 buckles that are adjustable. The tan is a really nice color too. Worth
checking out. -Mike

Nick, nice set up. I am an experienced bike tourer and in recent years I've
gravitated towards the upfront loading firstly, then add rear baggage or
only the tent when I need the extra space. The Clementine's weight is
forcing me to consider exactly how much stuff I need to carry on future
trips. I have not tried camping with her yet - that will come in 2017. I
still prefer a very lightweight handle bar bag, something I can easily
detach and bring with me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for this, Bill. Actually, I haven't yet gotten to the "what do I
really want divided by what can I really afford" part of the equation,
though I look back and tearfully sniff with nostalgia at that 1973
Motobecane I got for about $75 shipped, about 2/3 of which was shipping
(eBay seller made up with shipping some of what he lost on my winning bid;
IIRC, I won the bid with $25 and paid the $50 for shipping; circa 2006-7 or
so).

Really, what I ought to do is spend say $200-$300 and have the gofast
modified and powdercoated so that it will take a rear brake and the trigger
shift apparatus for the AM; I don't really *want* another bike that is not
a custom or a bona fide Rivendell Road model, unless I can be sure that
whatever substitute it might be really does handle and feel like a
Rivendell, which is certainly a long shot.

My hand over hand buying and selling ended some years ago; I really don't
want more bikes; well, that's not true, but I am far more picky now than
before. (Let's turn this into a "So, what *other *bikes would you buy if
you could?" thread.)

But this will be a nice application to play with at this early pipe dream
stage.

[RBW] Re: An un-obstructive front handle bar bag for boscos?

2016-11-27 Thread Nick Payne
No, the Frame is a Litespeed Blue Ridge touring frame from the mid-1990s,
not a Litespeed racing frame. It'll comfortably fit 40mm tyres plus
mudguards, and the fork has about 20mm greater distance between axle and
crown race seat than a Carbonomas, which is intended as a replacement fork
for racing frames. The fork is Reynolds 531 that I had a local framebuilder
make for me, and I then had a chrome plating business satin chrome it to
match the Ti frame.

You can see somewhat better details of the fork in some of the photos here:
