Wouldn't those strong magnetic strips mess with the contents of the bag?

Re: [RBW] A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-11-28 Thread Kevin Lindsey
For what it's worth, I just removed a Klickfix system from my Hunqapillar.
I found that it caused the bag to sit so high relative to the center of
mass that it made the Hunq unstable; I couldn't even ride it hands-off
which, considering how stable the Hunq normally is, says a lot. I got in
touch with the good folks at Carradice to see if there was a solution to
this issue, but the only help they could offer was a refund for the bag.

Looks fairly similar to the Klickfix system that Swift uses for their

Maybe there's some compatibility there, not sure.

Scott,
Great photos.
Nice looking bike.
We have enjoyed a wonderful fall with lots of riding. Reality is setting in
this week. It will be dipping into the low 30s for highs this week.
We have yet to have any measurable snow along the front range .I need to
get the snowshoes dusted off.The Rockies are getting much needed snow now.
The ski slopes opened late this year due to those warm fall temps
As you know when the temps are in the 40s with plenty of sun and little
wind it's great weather for going for a ride.
Thanks for sharing your pictures.

A rack that sits down low to support the bag from the bottom and a
decaleur to support it at the top would be a solution to this problem.
I used such an arrangement with my Saluki using the largest size
Berthoud bag and it worked fine. Klickfix does have advantages when it
comes to quick on & off, but as you say, it makes the bag sit very high
indeed.

Re: [RBW] A plug to buy something from Rivendell Bicycle Works: A Nitto F-15 rack

2016-11-28 Thread Ron Mc
Hi Bill, I've outfitted several bikes from Alex cycles, and have a great
Ostrich saddle bag on my Viner. Any time the JY is more than 100 to the $
shopping in Japan is good. (I think most of the stuff I bought it pushing
JY120 to the $). I actually ordered an Ostrich F516, then over the same
weekend asked Alex to cancel my order - they're really good folks there.
Ely made just what I wanted, and I like the way the top of his bag sits
3-4" lower than the Ostrich. The stiffness of Ely's internal U-box also
solved the headlight problem I was shooting for.

As far as the weight question, the higher the trail, the more the bike
handling is affected by front weight. My Moser is Not a front-load bike,
but I carry my roadside in the saddle wedge, and all I'm using a front bag
for is winter layers. Our winter temps can swing 40 degrees - 40 to 80 on
a clear day.

[RBW] Re: Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-28 Thread Les Lammers
I agree with the others. Unless you will be off road a often or plan to
carry a lot of weight the Sam will likely suit you better. From the JA
description:* Our Joe Appaloosa is half-Sam Hillborne, half-Hunqapillar
that’s bullseyed for loaded road touring. *It also has longer chainstays
than the Sam and likely heavier tubing. Whichever you choose it will
probably not be your last Riv. I bought a Bleriot, very similar to a Sam
but 41mm or so is the max tire size, 9 years ago and recently got a
Chevoit. They ride differently and are keepers.

[RBW] Re: An un-obstructive front handle bar bag for boscos?

2016-11-28 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
The $30-or-so Wald basket with support struts might not mesh in with one's
sense of asthetics, but as a cheap fantastic way to carry a decent front
load, it is hard to beat. Strapping a standalone basked (Wald MED) onto a
suitable standalone rack, then or not adding a Shopsack MED with or without
the net is also hard to beat.
We are developing another new one or two front racks specifically for a MED
WALD basket. They'll be versatile platforms for other loads too, but ideal
for the MEDWALD, but they'll be a while.
For BOSCO bars (or CHOCO), it's seriously difficult to fault the function
of the $30 Wald strutted basket.

My '88 Schwinn KOM MTB is the largest size (22"/56 cm seat tube), which has
a 24"/61 cm top tube. I used drop bars on a dirt drop 8 stem for a while,
but the handling was still a little squirrely in front.

I've since converted it back to upright bars. Now I'm using Jones cut Loop
590 bars on an 80 mm stem, and the bike handles great.

So, an XL MTB frame may have a long enough top tube for you.

[RBW] Re: Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-28 Thread Philip Kim
I would lean towards the Sam and put Paul Racer brakes on it. Sam is still
plenty stout for your intended uses you described. It's pretty versatile to
be run with drop bars w/ short stem, or upright bars with a long stem.

for a joe, I would go with a 51 instead of a 46. my pbh is 78cm and the 51
fits great.

2016-11-28 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don't have experience with either bike but I've spent several years
trying to figure out what I want in a bike and 26" wheels will offer many
more choices in tires than 650B, especially in the area of really fat
street tires. That may not be a deciding factor for you but it's
something to consider.

Charlie R,

Who did you email? If it were me I would call them. If I didn't want to call
them I would probably use Brian first for all the emails I used to send Keven.
For that particular bike I happen to know that Will had a hand in the design,
so emailing Will with a couple compliments ought to get a promptish response.
CC Roman just in case Will is out. If that's all too confusing pick up the
phone. 😀

[RBW] Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-28 Thread LeahFoy
Does anyone have these:
https://www.rivbike.com/products/goat-gloves?variant=23335673921

I have a cheap pair of velvet gloves that are worn thin. I need a new pair and
thought I'd look at Riv first. These won't win me any beauty contests, but if
they were really wonderful, I'd just as soon give Riv the business. There are
no reviews and only one photo. Anyone have and love these?

Thanks!

[RBW] FS: Nitto M12 Front Rack (2 of 'em), Orc square platform rack - $50 each plus shipping

Selling a few racks.
Paypal Personal payment on these please.
Contact off-list if possible.
Thanks,

River Grove, IL

1. Nitto M12 Front Rack - lightly used, threaded M6 eyelets for light
mounts on both sides, includes double-sided canti-bolts - $50 plus shipping

2. Orc Square Platform Rack - sorta like a mini porteur rack, made in
Portland, rack platform fits a Wald 137 basket nicely, giving more support
to the bottom of the basket, fits on Riv standard mid/upper eyelets, I
removed the tombstone to center a Wald basket better and had plans to use
this as a rear rack for a saddlebag support on a Schwinn Voyageur frame
which broke a while back - I no longer have canti bikes that have a
horizontally drilled brake bridge - this one's unpainted - single eyelet
for a light mount, Wald basket not included - $50 plus shipping - not too
great photo here -

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Riv states clearly that those goat gloves are work gloves. Is that what
you need, work gloves? If so, I agree with you that it's nice to give Riv
the business, and I like that they are MUSA. If I needed a pair of
wood-stacking, axe swinging gloves, I would definitely give them a shot. I
would not use those gloves for cycling, as I would not use any of my
current work gloves for cycling.

Well, no. I want them for riding. I initially read the “good grip” part of the

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-28 Thread islaysteve
Leah, I've lately been trying some cold (or cool) weather riding and what I've
found to be surprisingly nice and versatile are my dress leather gloves, left
over fom when I actually went to work. They are soft leather, lined with
cashmere. From Bloomindales. (I know, but they were on sale after the
holidays.). Anyway, they are good at least down to 40 degrees, and probably
lower. They are not tight, and I think the extra airspace helps insulate.
Leather blocks the wind. Perhaps you already have something similar around.
Just my 2 cents. Cheers, Steve

Leah,

I think they are less than ideal for riding - they have NO padding. Some
folks like that, but I'm in the a little padding is good camp. Also, and I
may be more sensitive to this than others because I'm a large animal
veterinarian - they smell like buck. Yep, like intact male goat urine. I
can only assume they are made out of male goat leather...

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
I wear a pair of goat gloves in mildish winter weather, with wool gloves
underneath (temp range is small 35-50˚F) and they last a very long time.
I've abused the daylights out of mine for years. Since I don't use padding
anyway, I find no padding a huge plus. I would guess that for your desert
winters, a pair of these with an optional wool underglove would be a
perfect system, but fashion is not my thing so I'll leave that to others.
Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

the bikes for sale, Bill's Appaloosa, that Ebisu, that Crust, that
Rambler) and successfully dodged most of them until a Brompton popped
up. I was reminded of my visit a few weeks ago to a Brompton dealer (just
as i was walking by one...) and i was hooked. I think Brompton should do a
kick back program for owners because we attracted a crowd when i went to
pick it up and the seller was showing me the fold-unfold-fold. I have to
admit that there is something fun about riding these bikes, the steering is
a handful until you get used to it, and some of the components are
laughingly cheap/crude but it's a fun ride.

I think there are some cross-owners of RBW and Brompton, does anyone have a
link to an owners group? I've seen the bromptontalk group on yahoo (too
much noise), but looking for a group more similar to RBW. What i'm hoping
to find is feedback/experiences on changes, with so much folding i'm
worried about making changes that will then affect the folding mechanism.
I'm thinking of swapping in new grips, levers, maybe a saddle but wanted
feedback before i started ordering things.

Thanks for any pointers, I need to go and practice my folding technique,
i'm way slower than the videos online!

If you don't want cycling padding in a glove I don't think it matters which
glove you ride on as long as one that you think looks nice and blocks the
winter wind enough for you.

Re: [RBW] Where are the Brompton Owners or A Case of the Novembers

2016-11-28 Thread Eric Norris
Minh:

I’m a Brompton owner, and I’ll be happy to help. But your first call should be
to Clever Cycles in Portland OR, which is a huge Brompton dealer (I bought mine
from them). They worked with me to make a few changes to a stock bicycle, and
I’m sure they will be able to tell you if your plans will work.

I had them add a dyno hub and a headlight/taillight to mine, none of which
interferes with the fold. They even used the stock front rim and spokes to
build a wheel on a new dyno hub as a way to save money.

Subsequent to buying the bike, I added a pair of Cane Creek bar-ends (I got the
flat “S” bars). They make the bike much more comfortable to ride (more hand
positions) and also don’t interfere with the fold.

P.S. Call the components “crude,” but at Brompton prices they’re certainly not
cheap!

P.P.S. I’ve had my Brompton for about a year now without any problems. You’ll
like it, but be aware that they take slightly more effort to ride than a
standard bike, due to the small wheels. Longest ride on mine so far is about 60
miles.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-28 Thread Garth
Goat leather is real nice, soft and supple, absolutely perfect for
riding. Sitting upright and having grips of some sort on the bars no one
needs padded gloves anyways. Take the "work" thingy with a grain of salt,
or sugar whatever. It dries soft and offers good dexterity . While I
don't know those gloves in particular I'm sure they are good, the only
question is your size. However, you can likely find such gloves in a local
hardwear store, garden center or home improvement store. One "warning" ,
once you try them on you'll likely want to buy them !

I don't think I've ever done more than about 10 miles on either of the
Bromptons I've owned. While I love the bikes for train commuting, I really
have never adjusted to the way they handle. Can't imagine ever doing 60
miles on one - I'm exhausted just thinking about it. You are made of
sterner stuff!

If the Brompton parts are too "cheap" there's always the fancy aftermarket
bits that SJS Cycles sell. I had a few of their upgraded bits on my first
Brompton (which was stolen). I haven't bothered to upgrade my new Brompton,
and to be honest I don't really miss any of the fancy bits. Your dynamo
headlight idea is of course a good one - all bikes should have dynamo
headlights, right?

[RBW] Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-28 Thread Joe Bernard
Leah, I've been using these "gardening gloves" from Riv for many years.
Granted, I live in California where 50 degrees is considered cold weather, so I
can't vouch for them on rides below the 42 degrees Riv claim to be their limit.
They fit kinda big/loose if you have small hands like me, and start out kinda
stiff 'til you work them in. They're fine for sorta-clumsily pushing thumbies
or bar-ends, maybe not so good with Rapid Fire or brifters (which I know you
don't use).

Horizontal dropouts do give a bike somewhat more flexibility for different
kinds of builds. I prefer vertical dropouts, but as horizontals go, those

[RBW] Re: Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-28 Thread Surlyprof
Originally an Albatross but soon moved to an Albastache. I found I was
spending most of my time in the front curves of the Albatross. I like the
Albastache much better because it offers a little bit of upright position as
well as a more aggressive position in the curves. Feels great. Works better
with bar ends, too. No knee shifting when turning.

Thanks! That helps. I had always wondered about these two.

The Sam I test rode had Choco-NORM. Which I liked a lot. Albastache does
seem more practical.I'm thinking it'd be much quicker to slide hands
forward for urgent braking (while riding upright on Albastache) than having
to pull back (while riding leaned forward on Choco-Norm).

Leah,
If you showed up with hot broth on a cold day, I wouldn't care if you
were in a housecoat and slippers.

I don't have any experience with the goat gloves but I used a similar deerskin
glove for motorcycle gloves down to the 30s and they were fine.

My niece used to tease me for bringing juice boxes when we went riding
together, one day her friend went with us and my niece tried to clown me about
the juice boxes...until her friend thought they were a great idea.

Your kids are lucky.

Re: [RBW] Where are the Brompton Owners or A Case of the Novembers

2016-11-28 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I own 2 Bromptons. One is the 2015 black edition in white. I had a
modified bar installed that splits the difference between an S bar and the
M. I recently bought a used M6L on eBay in raw lacquer. I'm looking to
have that retrofitted with the new 2017 M bar and shifters. I'm looking at
some other mods like the clamps and handles (probably calling them the
wrong names). I really like the ride for tooling around on. Yes it is a
bit twitchy in handling but I accept that in this bike. The fold is so
impressive I can take it anywhere in the car very easily. I'm also
interested if there is a Brompton owners site to visit. I haven't found
one on the web yet.

[RBW] Re: Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-28 Thread Bob K.
Hi Ashwath,

I've been eyeing that route with a buddy for this coming summer. It's "a route
designed to enjoy over an extra-long weekend on a gravel/adventure bike with
hearty 40mm tires or greater." I run 42mm tires on my Sam, and I have a pair of
Marathon 47s that fit without issue. I wouldn't hesitate to take my Sam on that
trip, although the few miles of single track just wouldn't be as fun as they
would be on my Krampus.

In general, though, for your uses, either bike would be great. A Joe might
offer a bit more versatility, and I don't think you'd be giving up much to the
Sam for loaded road riding--perhaps a bit of nimbleness, but oh well. And
likewise, a Sam handles well on trails. I've done more than my fair share of
underbiking with mine, and smiles abound.

they had a facebook feed, but i dont do facebook.
i love mine but in a different way than my other bikes.

i had a moulton for a while but kept the brompton. i ordered it with a achmidt.
i got mine in vancouver because the exchange rate was good.
the exchange rate is even better now.
there is a dealein Vanco couver bc. nice folks.
if you order from the states or maybe even from there with a passport you may
not have to pay GST which is real savings.

[RBW] 40-ish mm Tires on Thinner Rims?

2016-11-28 Thread Eric Karnes
Hi all-

Wanted to get your thoughts...

I have a set of OpenPro rims on which I comfortably run 35mm tires on my
Hilsen. I'd like to go up to the max knobbies that the bike can run (I'm
leaning toward 40mm Clements MSOs). Have people had success running tires
this wide on OpenPros or would it be more prudent to invest in a new set of
rims?

Thanks!

Eric

ps. If anyone has a spare set of 40-ish mm knobbies you are looking to part
with, lemme know!
