I have used Brynje brand fishnet for many (more than 20?) years. Works great
for xc skiing. I use a short sleeve top and knicker bottoms. It's a Norwegian
company instead of Colorado though, and the prices reflect that.

Also want to add that my history with B17 Special and B17 Champion is
equally glum -

- both stretched and developed bad ridges to the point that I had to lace

S. Texas summer sweat could be a factor in this, but doesn't show up in a

[RBW] Re: Holiday Saddle question

2016-12-06 Thread Ron Mc
OK, but this was the first 8 miles on my first S-A - it stretched so much
the front of the saddle actually let go of the stretch bolt - this was
stopped at a bike shop to borrow some tools to fix it.
This took most of the stretch bolt and finally bent a rail.

I have 10,000 mi on a B17 Select and took just a little stretch bolt in the
summer when I was sweating heavily.

I'm also pushing that distance on my Rivet Indy.
It's one of the first Debra made and developed the problem of a ridge
behind the slot, I think because the radius of that rear hole was too
small.
She solved this problem by increasing the diameter of the rear slot hole -
I think at my recommendation.

Finally this year, I just took one of my very sharp knives and sliced the
ridge off.

It's working great. This is a very cozy high-mileage saddle.

I think for most people, B17 is the wrong shape for a drop-bar road bike -
it certainly is for me. I think B17 works best on your sit-up touring
bike, and also works fine for me on an upright.

And I agree, for the greatest range in riding positions, S-A is the most
invisible saddle ever made. But matching a B17 or Rivet to its correct
riding position (for your tush) is equally invisible.

2016-12-06 Thread GAJett
I have used fishnet for over 45 years, and some of my current inventory
dates to that time. NOTHING compares to the flexibility of fishnet as a
base layer. Large air pockets create a very warm layer next to the skin,
especially if the overlying layer fits closely. Opening the outer layer
allows you to dump warm air very quickly if you overheat, and this is the
one outdoor garment where I PREFER COTTON!

Why cotton? Geez, everyone knows "cotton kills" the weather turns cold!
But in this case so very little of the fishnet contacts your skin that the
conductive heat loss typical of a moist cotton fabric simply does not
apply. And I find it more comfortable than the nylon or poly fishnets.

Many of my remaining fishnet tops were sourced from Eddie Bauer, when they
still sold outdoor gear. The bottoms died a decade ago when the flat
fabric between the thighs gave up completely. I have purchased "womens"
fishnet tops suitable for a base layer, but they tend to be too short in
the torso.

I am not a fan of the Wiggy's product, based on what I have seen. Nylon
fabric, and so many apparent areas of flat fabric (e.g., over the knees)
that would provide no insulating benefit just turn me off. I have looked
for alternate sources, finding one in Norway, but my e-mails went
unanswered.

Fishnet longies simply ROCK. They beat standard high-tech long undies by a
mile, and the typical mass market items by 10. If anyone has sources in
addition to Wiggy's I would REALLY like to know.
Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Re: Wtb/bar end shifter question

2016-12-06 Thread Patrick Moore
I inadvertently proved today that Silver shifters can shift 10 speeds, if
not mountain or Dynasys (I know nothing about those). I replaced the
Bontrager 44/40/26 triple with a Logic on a offset 130 Phil, with 42/28
rings, so I had to change my cassette. For me, this means dumping the cog
box onto the floor and scrambling around to find the right sizes -- the
collection includes Uniglides, 7s, 8s, 9s, and apparently even some 10s. I
found the butt end of a cassette, 3 cogs riveted together on a spider,
21-23-27, which looked just right for the big end, so I put that on. I
wasn't paying attention, so I just shoved the other cogs on with 9 speed
spacers, and was a bit disconcerted to find (a) that the lockring had to be
pushed hard to engage the threads, and (b) that I had to adjust the inner
limit screw. The 9 speed SRAM chain shifted fine.

Then I looked more closely and found that I had a home-brew 10 speed:
13-27. That would have been very good news, except that my hub seems
incompatible with dished big cogs; the inside of the 27 lightly rubbed the
spokes. When I substituted a "flat" big, I could no longer squeeze 10 onto
the freehub body.

But the Silver BESs shifted the 9 speed chain very nicely across all 10 of
the cogs.

Given my experience, I will now simply buy some 10 speed spacers (if I can
find a source that doesn't charge $7 to $18 per) and a new chain, and build
my own 10 speed cassette. I think that the ~2 mm saved by the narrower
spacers will more than make up for the absence of a dished inner cog.

Anyway, an interesting experience -- 10 speeds with 9 speed spacing on a
Shimano freehub.

[RBW] Re: Wtb/bar end shifter question

2016-12-06 Thread Jon BALER
Shimano 10 speed mountain/dynasys needs more cable pull than traditional
friction shifters, so you can't use just any shifter.

Microshift is the only compatible bar end shifter that i know of. There are
other options for friction shifting for downtube or thumb shifting that will
work with dynasys.

There is also a modification that I have used to make a 9 speed shifter work.
Take a dremel to the shifter and increase the lever travel.

I just did this test of the top:

It was newly washed, along with a HEAVY flannel cotton shirt, just wrung out
and still dripping wet. Put on my ventile shell, rode to WP in 10˚F, with 40
mph winds on the descent. Not warm, but I wasn’t colder at any point on the
ride than when I first left the house.

My head and hands with my yet to be fortified boiled wool hat and gloves were
chilly on the descent.

THAT’S impressive longjohning! Grin.

2016-12-06 Thread Joe Bernard
The Appaloosa has been the only new fully lugged model in quite a while. What I
think happened is the youngsters at Riv finally convinced Grant that losing
sales to lower-cost TIGed steel bikes was for the birds, and the floodgates
opened on that end. First was the very excellent Clem, then they found a use
for s bunch of spare forks with Rosco Bubbe, next is Roadini. I fully support
this new direction seeing as how I tried to talk him into it 10-or-so years ago

I must be one of those that the X fits, I call it my "taint hammock" and it

I'm not debating that point. My brooks have some sag. It's the amount or

[RBW] Re: Roadini info

2016-12-06 Thread Michael Hechmer
I must admit to some surprise. For quite awhile it seemed like
consolidation was the order of the day. Now models seem to proliferate
like rabbits. This kind of sounds like the rebirth of the Ramboulliet, a
Rodeo, just a bit more practical. Since I always thought axing the Ram was
a real loss; I'll celebrate this, if I'm right.

Le Roadini..hm. I didn't realize we'd announced anything yet, but since le
chat is out of the mussette, here's 100 percent of what there is to know

1. It's not going to duplicate or overlap too much any existing bike except
the Roadeo. No "85 percent Sam, but with lighter tubing."
2. We won't burden it with "The Thinker's Road bike," or other references

3. It certainly won't copy existing road geometries. It'll be well-designed
from small to big, with the geometries that make our bikes feel like our
bikes.
4. We are considering what braze-ons to include. The idea is to make it
useful, but not to encourage (for example) MFL. Do we add those little
front of the fork braze-ons for a Mark's Rack, or will that encourage
monster front loading? Practically, it would be an ideal bike for a small
bar-mount bag, like the Bar Tube or the now-gone BarSack rack (which wins
the record for the highest ratio of expected success-to-actual sales. Dang,
if we bring it back, it'll be a "last gasp" bring-back, and if you ride
drop bars you should get it).
5. Same reach as Roadeo. Again here, Homer-Sam clearances will send the
message that it's just a featherweight Du-All, and it won't be that.

It'll take a Jack Brown, but not with a fender. Sidepulls, but not the
Silvers with all that reach. It may have a few more braze-ons than a
Roadeo, but we haven't settled on that yet.

It won't be a "high-plane/low-trailer," but I recognize that there's a
place for those bikes!

It will look really good and ride like a pure road bike ought to, and will
be --- other stuff...AND

it may have one ultra-groovy feature never seen before on any of our bikes.
This is my "take back" for being forced to reveal so much so early on a
bike that is more of a plan than settled yet!

I really didn't know this was revealed, and I really don't mind that it
was. Usually it's me who speaks too early, so whoever wrote that

[RBW] Re: Holiday Saddle question

2016-12-06 Thread Eric Karnes
I actually preferred the looks of the SA. It looks just right on a
slim-tubed steel bike like a Riv. Even the looks of the 'hammock' was fine
by me. But one of mine would routinely sag so severely that I could (just
barely) feel the top of the seatpost while riding. Not comfortable. Maybe I
got a defective one? I've been told the quality of SA saddles has decreased
dramatically since the founder's passing. Or maybe--as always--saddles are
a profoundly personal choice.

If the leather is taut with no slack it doesn't hammock your sit bones. If
it doesn't hammock your sit bones each side wont move independently of the
other. That movement combined with the slot to relieve perineal pressure
are what make the saddle comfortable. Like I said I purchased my first SA
saddle after meeting the previous owner (who now operates Rivet) and
talking with her about the design and trying the demo saddle. These things
are very much intentional design elements. I've managed to make my saddles
work to where they don't sag too much and I still have plenty of room to
tension more if I needed. Obviously one saddle design is not going to be
perfect for every human's butt, body shape is pretty wildly variable.
Doesn't make the saddle the problem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Looking for recommendations for shipping a bike from Bellingham, WA to Oakland, CA

2016-12-06 Thread Eric Norris
I recently used Amtrak to ship a bike across the country, with great results.

I used Amtrak because I was shipping a vintage bike (Raleigh) that I didn't
want to disassemble enough to fit into the type of bike box that BikeFlights
uses (think of the boxes you can get from your local bike shop). Amtrak's own
box (about $15) only requires that you take off the pedals and turn the
handlebars. The bike just rolls in, although I put a bunch of padding around
the Raleigh.

Amtrak's price was about $80, which was much lower than $600 or so that FedEx
or UPS would charge to ship such a large box. They'll take it from any Amtrak
station to any Amtrak station. You have a few days at the end point to pick it
up, then they charge you about $3 a day for storage.

If you can deal with removing the wheels, fenders, etc., to get the bike into a
standard box, use BikeFlights. It's a little cheaper, and they'll deliver it
right to your doorstep. If you don't want to take the bike apart, Amtrak is a
great option.

2016-12-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
Having gotten used to how expensive FedEx and UPS had gotten, I was
pleasantly surprised to see how affordable bikeflights was. I've had my
first experience with a bike getting damaged by the shipper using
bikeflights, but I had insured the bike and getting an insurance claim was
straightforward. I always box things up myself, so it's free. If the
person on the Bellingham side is unable or unwilling to do that part, then
you need to arrange that part as well.

I admit I'm extra nervous about shipping anything/everything during the
Holidays.

Re: [RBW] Re: Q for fellow Blustery Bonzos...

I had a similar issue back in 2009 not too long after I started running. I
was unable to nose breath easily also. In my case, I had both a deviated
septum and a bony tumor in my sinus. Once those were taken care of at the
end of 2009, I could nose breath easily. A crimped tube can never achieve
full flow. You can either try to adapt to the reduced flow or have the
flow issue fixed. Just make sure they don't want to break it to fix it.
That's old school and no longer necessary, at least in my case. Try the
exercises Patrick mentioned to see if you can adapt to the reduced flow. I
wasn't able to or just didn't have the patience for it.

Not about looks it's about comfort. Sagging too much then it's
uncomfortable. I'm not sure which came first the excessive sagging or their

 over-tensioning":p.

yes out of the box it's more comfortable than a brooks. But a brooks gets
more comfortable over time a SA gets less comfortable. Brooks, Berthoud,
or Rivet for my next one.

[RBW] Deep Red 60CM Joe Bell Painted Custom on Ebay - San Diego Area? Anyone recognize?

2016-12-06 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Not mine and never dealt with this seller.

What catches my attention is the dearth of description on this frameset.
Which may mean that it was just found at an estate sale or something. And
further conjecture probably is not necessary.

Appears to be a dark red Joe Bell painted later model lugged custom. Stated
as 60 CM which looks about right. With a reasonably cheap group and sort of
non-RBW setup (seller has the saddle jacked up to look more like a standard
issue road bike), then tilted down a bit oddly. Reasonably inexpensive
drivetrain - though that doesn't mean too much. Anyway - just floating it
out there for review.

[RBW] Wtb/bar end shifter question

2016-12-06 Thread mike gasparino
Hey guys,

I have a 1x10 set up on my Atlantis with a 10 speed xt cassette and
derailleur. I need a rear bar end shifter that can go up to 10 on friction,
which I'm pretty sure most Shifters can do if I'm not mistaken? thanks!

[RBW] Re: Albastache on what frame?

2016-12-06 Thread Kieran J
What about a light, flexy frame for the Albastache? Your other rides are
towards the beefy-ish end. Maybe a 531 Trek or something? (Although I do
remember you having one or some frames like that in the past [?])

I have a 'stache on my Ram "fast-ish road bike", and it is there to stay. I
never got on with drop bars, and I think the 'stache incorporates some of
the hand-position benefits with flat-bar comfort and control.

Re: [RBW] Re: Holiday Saddle question

2016-12-06 Thread 'clayton bailey' via RBW Owners Bunch
I just installed my fourth new SA. In my last comment I neglected to say, I had
to do some prep work on my last saddle. I took coarse sandpaper and sanded down
the edges to provide a rounded edge. I also carefully peened down the edge of
the name plate so it won't tear up my shorts. Some mink oil on the edges of the
leather fixes the destruction. I found the key to setting up mine is to set the
nose a little high, and LIGHT tension. I haven't over stretched mine In my
thirty years of riding, this is the most comfortable saddle I have tried. With
beausage, they looks great.

HI David. I have the Albastache on a late 1980's Pinarello Montello road

I realize sagging is part of their design but when you get a saddle whose

[RBW] Albastache on what frame?

2016-12-06 Thread David Banzer
So I've had an itch to build up an Albastache'd bike. Might be silly to
build up a bike only to have another handlebar option, but I'm ok with that.
My goal is to find an older mtb as a winter project and build it up with
Albastache bars.
Assuming the bars work out for me, I'd like to swap things over to a newer
frameset.

My question is:
Which frame would work well with Albastache bars assuming I want a
semi-upright yet still a tad aggressive setup?
As this is the Riv list, Rivendell frames obviously should be in the mix,
but other frame suggestions are welcomed.

Ideally new bike would not overlap with current bikes/handlebar setups
which are:
Riv Clem - Albatross
Riv Redwood - drops, Nitto B132
Black Mountain Monster Cross - drops, Nitto B132
VO Campeur - shortened Albatross w/ inverse brake levers

X, ) I've had for about 5 years. Put countless miles on it, rode it on a
week long tour, commuted on it, you name it. Still going strong. I bought a
second about 3 years ago (T model) and like the leather more than on the
original. Haven't moved the tension bolt past halfway for either.

I'm guessing the combination of a less stiff leather than the Brooks and
the looser hammocking shape of the saddle makes the SA work better with
specific body shapes. People with uneven hip rotation will stretch each
side of the saddle differently, people with thicker legs may experience
thigh rub, I personally never found a Brooks comfortable and after
riding one for about a year barely noticed any breaking in whereas the SA
was the most comfortable saddle I ever sat in right out of the box. To each
their own, best thing you can do is try as many saddles as possible.

I use Compass tires. They are comfortable, handle and corner extremely well,
and give a cushy ride.

But I don't think any tire I've ever ridden (or any bike component for that
matter) has ever made me any faster. At least that's what the bike computer
shows. So I cannot claim that the Compass tires , or Grand Bois tires I have
used (Hetres, Cypres, Loups, Stampeeds, Chinooks) roll any faster than Swabby
marathons that I've used, or armadillo tires or continental gator skins.

I do see the comfort and handling, though.

I ride B17 Select on upright and semi-upright moustache bike. I ride Rivet
Indy on my drop-bar road bike.
Went through two S-A saddles and each lasted 6 months to the end of the
stretch bolt.

[RBW] Re: Q for fellow Blustery Bonzos...

2016-12-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Lum Gim Fong, your deviated septum may not be material to your breathing
issues, while over breathing may be. Try this as you sit there reading this:

1. Breathe through your nose, mouth closed, including exhale. This is your
baseline.
2. After exhaling fully, pause. Hold your breath until just slightly
feeling that urge to breathe. Then breathe slow and controlled through your
nose, mouth closed. Are your sinuses more open?

I learned the Buteyko Breathing Method (nose only, except in exercise,
normal breathing is very shallow and has a pause after full exhale of 6-10
seconds. Exercise increases this). I learned with their book (a $2
download). Their classes are highly
expensive. https://www.breathingcenter.com. Also eliminated my allergies
and acid reflux issues. Took three month to fully be comfortable, and a
year to be able to exercise at almost any level (I just slowed down to stay
nose breathing).

With abandon,
Patrick

I was thinking exactly the same thing and wondered if this might be a

[RBW] Re: Atlantis

2016-12-06 Thread Will
About 15 years ago I had a fitting. Cost $150, took about an hour. The
fitter was seriously competent. The shop sold Serottas.

Fitting evaluations are predicated on philosophy. Serotta was go-fast. The
fitter was spec'ing me to a go-fast bike.

The question for you is whether you think your fitting was appropriate for
the riding you do and will be doing over the next 10-15 years.

If I had bought the Serotta, I would be very unhappy today. It would not
have fenders. It would be constrained to 24mm tires. It would have been a
really lousy all-purpose bicycle.

My advice is... take the long view... Riv isn't selling bikes to 20 year
olds. Riv is selling bikes to people who want comfort, beauty, and quality.

You have a beautiful Hillborne. Challenge your mental model. Get a shorter
stem. See if it works.

[RBW] Re: Just bought Compass 700x32 Extra Lights

2016-12-06 Thread ascpgh
I put them on my Rambouillet this summer with the same reaction. One of the
more astounding observations besides the ride quality is the rollout. We
have hills around here, seldom straight, seldom of pitches recommended in
civil engineering handbooks and more textures than most places including
concrete, asphalt, brick, Belgian block and yes, wooden block.

In a group of riders, me on the only ferrous framed, 36-spoked, leather
saddled, Compass EL-tired bike, beginning a descent without a pedal stroke,
I simply roll away from others. It was so noticeable that one rider (in his
20s) quipped "those old guys have nothing left to live for" unable to grasp
that such could result from better tires and that I did nothing to produce
the difference including being heavier (my 185 lbs doesn't stand out in
that group).

Not only is the roll out impressive, the feel of control from suppleness
doesn't raise concern over nearing the edge of the envelope where lesser
rim protectors go into a sketchy ride and an interval of handling and feel
that makes clear that they are not happy when too many parameters challenge
them. My Stampede Pass ELs earned their place quickly and are the simple,
obvious decision for tires in my book. Few bits of kit are such slam dunks
and winter moments imagining a new bike project would only take 15 minutes
if all others were this clear.
