[RBW] My Debate

2016-12-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
What debate? The obvious answer is both. The L'Avecaise is not a bike packing
bike. It's a cyclotouring bike at most. The Riv model it most resembles would
be a Roadeo. If you want a real touring bike or a bike packing bike, the Lyon
is not necessarily that. But if you want a light flexible road machine for fat
tires, the Rivendell is maybe overbuilt. You really need one of each, or maybe
need to clear out your existing stable to make room

[RBW] My Debate

2016-12-12 Thread Matt Gilkey
I have owned a 56 cm Atlantis and I currently own a Jeff Lyon L'avecaise. I
loved the Atlantis and primarily used it as a mountain bike. If I were forced
to own only one bike I would have to pick the Atlantis for it's versatility.
That being said I absolutely love my L'avecaise, and will never sell it. The
feeling of the L'avecaise on the road is amazing. The handling is fantastic and
it is by far the most comfortable "road" bike I have ever owned. And Jeff was
great to work with, but so are the riv folks.

I would say the choice comes down to what type of bike you are looking for. If
I were in the market for mostly dirt road rides and touring I would get a riv.
If I wanted a comfortable road bike that is also great on dirt roads I would
choose the L'avecaise. I feel that perhaps riv's are more versatile, but I
love the feel of the L'avecaise. Hope that helps with the tough choice.

-Matt

Re:my wife's bike. We are now in our 60's ( 64 and 65 ), but in our 50's we
road a lot (6-7000 miles a year). We had to rebuild her Campy shifters
several times and had to replace wheel sets, and finally replaced the Campy
triple group with a Shimano Ultegra 6800 11sp group. But the frameset will
remain her favorite forever.
In my experience, a well built and well designed bike is a great
investment. Heck, we even had her Rex repainted.

[RBW] My Debate

2016-12-12 Thread Ian A
A Riv and an L'Avecaise will be significantly contrasting frames. L'Avecaise
having the flexible tubing that can give such a nice feel. The trail numbers
also contrast massively.

If you want an American handcrafted, low trail, randonneur style bicycle, the
Jeff Lyon option clearly is most suitable. Assuming you are dead set on a
purchase at this time and you don't already own something that fits the brief,
I can't see any reason not to seize the opportunity. As long as you are buying
based on enjoying it and not based on buying simply because it's a great deal,
that is.

Disclosure: I am often wrong.

[RBW] My Debate

2016-12-12 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
The little devil on my shoulder awoke when I saw that Jeff Lyon wants to
move some L'Avecaise frames out with fork and headset (customer gets to
pick the single, solid paint color). I'd been thinking Riv for years, but
never justified pulling the trigger (I'm pretty happy with my stable, but
I'm missing something to do bikepacking with - was thinking Wolverine, but
then - you know - that NYT article came out; plus I just got rid of the
monthly boat anchor at the local marina).

So, given the choice for the same price and knowing I can't go wrong either
way, would you pick a Riv or L'Avecaise?

I'm just interested in hearing some different points of view because my
feeble brain isn't capable of thinking of every angle of consideration!

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA

bike does not align with that philosophy. I've owned many many fine bikes

Thankfully rivendell's hold a lot of their value and a few mistakes (bikes

consider it a rental fee :)

My experience - I have had Nokian W106 700x45c tires on my Quickbeam for
many winters. Yes, the 45's fit. Barely! I have been very happy with their
performance in a variety of conditions, but they add a lot of resistance!

I also have used Nokian A10 650x40b tires, which are really more like 35mm,
on my Bleriot/Protovelo. I wasn't as happy with them, but just ordered
another pair because I'm now commuting on a Cheviot with 650b wheels and
they're the only snow tires that will work on that bike. On the Bleriot I
found the front end tended to float up on the slush and lose traction.

I have also used Schwalbe Marathon Winter 559-50 tires on my Riv ATB, and
not been happy. I had a chance yesterday to confirm my unhappiness. I took
advantage of the weekend snow dump to put the Schwalbe's back on the Riv
ATB and go for a romp. It reminded me why I was happy to take them off the
bike last spring. At any reasonable speed, the tires very easily floated up
on slush and the front end of the bike would start moving sideways.

I then took the Cheviot out for the same loop, on its Compass Babyshoe Pass
(650x42b) tires, and it was way more stable. Go figure. I rode the Cheviot
to work this morning and it was fine until I hit the Milwaukee section of
the bike path and 8" of snow. (Shorewood cleared their section of the path,
God bless them!) Back on city streets the Compass tires were fine. There is
not a lot of fender clearance, though, so the accumulating slush made for a
good resistance training ride. I'm counting on the A10's having a bit more
clearance, so there will be less slush buildup. I also think narrower tires
are better for riding slushy sorta plowed city streets. The guy on the fat
bike in front of me on the path this morning was probably glad for his huge
tires, but only where we were riding in a fair amount of snow that hadn't
been driven on.

So, if I had bought a 700c Cheviot, I'd have happily put the Nokian W106
tires on it, though I'd be tempted to try the narrower 35's.

"Best" can be completely objective, too: you just need criteria and a
way to measure. Cost-effective is one way to measure "best". Most
expensive != "best", best is best but it can also be the most expensive.

box. All are in decent, used condition. They are not new, but have tons of
life left in them. You probably don't want them on a fancy show bike, but for
a commuter or daily rider they should work just fine for years to come!!

Crankset: Shimano Deore mountain bike cranks. 175mm arms, 110/74 bcd. The
two large chain rings are trashed, but the inner (steel 24t) ring is in good
shape. I will probably just take off the outer two rings before shipping
unless buyer wants them for some reason, like to grind down for a bash guard or
something. Again, these are used, shopworn, could use a cleaning/polishing,
but functionally fine. $45 shipped

Brake levers: Cane Creek SCR-5 levers. Black hoods (the ones with the little
lizards) with nice QR on the lever. Right hood has a tiny (~5mm) tear. Never
bothered me when they were on my Rivendell, but switched out the noodles for
other bars and don't need these any more. $25 shipped

Down tube Shifters: these are a set of *very* svelt Suntour pure friction down
tubers. These came off a bike I got in about 1985/6, my first good bike- a
Cannondale sport tourer. (I actually got a deal on it because it was "last
year's model." The then current "this year's model" was the first year with
then-new index shifting. So it could be argued that these are the ne plus
ultra of friction shifters!) They are as simple as you can imagine and attach
to standard dt bosses. They are in decent used condition. I took them off
around 1995 when I became a Suntour power ratchet barender guy. They have been
in a plastic bag, with all the parts and useable cables, ever since. They
could use a cleaning. $25 shipped

Rear Derailer: Suntour XC Sport 7000 long cage rear derailer. Works fine. Has
a few scratches near the pivots and could use a cleaning. Once again- this is
not for a showroom queen, but it's a very functional old-school mech that has
many more shifts left in it. $15 shipped.

Let me know if you have any questions or would like photos. Please contact me
*OFF LIST* at beewak -at- gmail -dot- com. PayPal " friends and family"
preferred. If you are in NYC let me know and we could arrange pickup and save
on shipping.

The way you really win is to stay with it. Over a 10 or 20 year
ownership period, the annual cost of a really, really nice bike becomes
reasonable or even downright cheap when compared to the cost of constant
churn, replacing a mid- or low-level bike with another one every couple

Re: [RBW] 29er/700c Studded Tire Options for Clem.

2016-12-12 Thread Tim Gavin
There are lots of options in 35-40 mm; the OP (David) already has one bike
with those.

I picked up a pair of Nokian Suomi Hakkapeliitta W240 622-40 tires
recently; my girlfriend will try them on a Specialized Tricross. I use
studded Dillinger 5's on my fat bike for ultimate traction. I'm mounting
them up tonight.

I'm glad to hear that the 650b A10s are working out for you, Zed. The only
other 650b studded tire I know of is the 584-57 Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro
, a
very aggressive off-road tire. Looks like a winner for unplowed paths
though.

Actually, Nokian/Suomi does make the A10 which is more commuting and less off
road oriented. I've used the 622-35 Scwalbe Winter Marathons on a previous bike
and am now trying the 574-40 Suomi A10s on my own Clem. The A10 has fewer

Re: [RBW] 29er/700c Studded Tire Options for Clem.

2016-12-12 Thread Tim Gavin
For commuting, I've heard lots of good reviews for the Schwalbe Marathon
Winter. They're available in 700 x 50 (29 x 2") and 700 x 42. The studs
are on the sides of the tread, so they don't drag as much in normal
riding--but they can help in icy ruts. Peter White has them, or get them
from Europe for cheap.

They're heavy and slow, but that's true of all studded tires.

Most of the other wide studded tires (Nokian Suomi, 45Nrth, etc) have
aggressive tread for MTB use, which is overkill and added drag for
commuting.
