No … the IQ-X is far, far brighter. The Magnic Lights aren’t as bright, but
they are bright enough to ride by, are always on, and have virtually no drag.

It’s all about trade-offs.

Depending on your terrain, a one tooth difference may not be essential, so
a 16-18 could get you there. I use my 32/40 16/19 set up for all roads and
trails, including singletrack on Pikes Peak. If your terrain is less
extreme, you'll do just fine with a 16-18. Where are you riding?

I'm waiting on my pre-ordered Sinewave Beacon headlight + USB charger combo.
It's a really cool system with a ton of interesting perks, including the
particularly neat way you can charge an external battery pack from the light
while also relying on it for power when you're traveling at low speeds. Not to
mention it's MUSA and the owner of the company has been incredibly responsive
to my communications, even offering to loan me a prototype unit for a trip I
just took because production was just slightly behind schedule.

I'll be using an SP PD-8 hub. I don't know anything about drag and don't think
I'll notice.

[RBW] Re: FS: 2017 Appaloosa 51cm green

2017-07-21 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
Joe is a very nice bike. My decision to part with it mostly has to do with
my riding 'opportunities'. Between family, work and couple of other things
I've been involved in, I only get to ride around the town. My MTB got
stolen recently. After that I'm afraid to take Joe if the trip requires
locking it (like going out for dinner/lunch). I end up riding an old road
bike in those situation. The thing is worth $100, so I don't tend to think
of the bike the whole time I'm at a dinner. Also, the grocery shops I
frequent are too cramped to take the bike inside. I just do not feel
comfortable locking the bike for even 15 minutes. Just too many thefts and
vandalisms around.

The 'need' I have now is an MTB for occasional rides on weekends. So Hunq
is likely the next project.

I'm hoping to have a bike like Joe again in couple of years when I will
have more chances for full day/multi day rides (kids need grow up a little
bit).

My wife keeps saying the bike looks 'too big' for me. But that's not the
reason I'm selling it :)

[RBW] Re: 1.5 x N+1

2017-07-21 Thread Jay Connolly
Yes, height has its curses when it comes to bicycles. For years I have ridden
bikes with long top tubes (Surlys before Rivs). My first "modern" bike was a
Trek 520. I knew nothing about sizing and geometry when I bought it. Turned out
the sale an sold me a 60 when I needed the next size up. I could not stand on
the bike to climb because a) I'd bang my knees on the barcons, and b) it was
difficult to get my weight sufficiently forward on a too-small frame. I like a
spacious frame. At this point, I don't mind paying for what I like, but I don't
want to create too much redundancy, either. I like my bikes to have distinct
ride characteristics, not subtle ones. Huge difference between my Joe and my
Sam, for instance, despite the fact that they could be make to ride quite
similarly. One of those could go to the cottage. I wouldn't mind building up a
drop-bar mountain rig along the lines of a Fargo. I'm in no rush to do this,
though, and I'll be interested to see what Riv comes out with in the next year
or so.

Re: [RBW] 2017 latest dynamo/lights that are best in the world?

2017-07-21 Thread Orc
The big problem with the magniclight is that the lamp is integrated with
the generator so you're stuck with the crappy lamp unless you're willing to
hand-modify the thing.

I suspect you could drive an IQ-X off one of those things (I regularly run
an IQ-X + taillight off a Shimano 1n70) though it might take longer to
charge the standlight circuit and get ignition.

2017-07-21 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I'm very happily using the SP PV8 and IQ-X It's my 1st try at dynamo lighting
so I don't have anything to compare it to. Works great for my year round pretty
urban commute. Probably more than I need actually. Suppose you can't have too
much light.

Thanks for the info Eric. You like them better than using your IQX? They sound
excellent.

But alas, after crashes and injury due to 28mm and narrower tires getting hung
up in sidewalk/pavement liips/cracks. I don't like riding anything narrower
than 38mm wide tires.

Re: [RBW] 2017 latest dynamo/lights that are best in the world?

2017-07-21 Thread Eric Norris
Lum:

Regarding your question about alternative lighting systems—I’ve been using
Magnic Lights for several years now, both their first and second generations
(https://www.magniclight.com/en/ ) The lights
stay on the bike and serve as daytime running lights. I know they use some of
my effort to generate light, but I can honestly say that you can’t feel any
drag. None.

The lights work well, and the second generation works much better than the
first. I’ve used them successfully for nighttime riding, always with a
helmet-mounted headlight. If you need super-bright lights they are probably not
the best choice, but out in the country and away from streetlights they are
plenty bright for me. YMMV

The taillights (and especially the second generation) are very bright. The
newer model also adds several modes (flashing vs steady, etc.) and acts as a
brake light, blinking when you slow down.

I have had zero problems with mine.

The least desirable part of the system for me is the way the front lights
mount. Because they have to be close to the rim, they don’t clear wide tires
(wider than about 28C) very easily. Magnic Light’s nicest mount runs close to
the wheel and won’t work with tires wider than 28C.

Contact me offline if you’re interested in more info. You can also use Google
to find a number of online reviews.

[RBW] 2017 latest dynamo/lights that are best in the world?

2017-07-21 Thread lum gim fong
*I am thinking of buying a new dyno wheel and getting another headlight
and was wondering if anyone knows what the best dyno hubs and lights
currently are.*

By best, I mean:

1. Least drag
2. More than 90 lux with smoothest, widest, uniform near and far field of
light. No hot spots, or multiple fields.
3. furthest/widest beam cast. Has anyone thought to put lenses in the side
for cornering light?
4. protected from elements well. Like glass lens, and water compensating
atmospheric pressure thingy like SONdelux has in their hubs to keep
moisture out.
5. Height cutoff so as not to blind oncoming traffic.

Last I heard, seemed like people were saying that:

*Hubs:*

SON28 or delux widebody and Shutter Precision PV-8 are best hubs, depending
on your charging needs. It is contested who has the least drag. Depends on
who is talking, who's chart you are looking at. SON has that water pressure
protection thingy in the hub so that is better protection from elements
than the SP's have, unless they have something newer that now has this
technology.

*Lights:*

B IQX, can hang upright or hang upside down easily.
Smoothest/furthest/widest/uniformest/brightest light beam.
edeluxII second place?

*2. I was also wondering if there is a new dragless, battery-less,
technology for lighting that antiquates dyno lighting/hubs at this point
altogether. Especially something that cannot loosen and fall into spokes.*

*3. Are things still the same in the lighting market, or has something
newer that is better for a hub/light bundle come out?*

Thanks for the info.

[RBW] Re: FS: 2017 Appaloosa 51cm green

2017-07-21 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hh... I looked back through FS posts on this forum, nothing scientific,
nothing formal, but I see a wide variety of bikes for sale, more Sam's, a
few Homer's, but there are Atlantis, Cheviot's, Clem's, Betty Foy's, a Riv
Road, a Roscoe, other non-Riv bikes.

I know there was at least one person who had miscalculated a bit on using
drop bars (on the Joe) and there have been times of financial or other
need. That said, I am pretty sure the Joe's do not come for sale any more
often than other bikes, at least not on this forum. I think there have
been re-posts and bumps of specific bikes for sale and maybe that makes it
seem so.

Anyway, there are many reasons to sell a bike... Many of us are
experimenters, try'ers of things and, at times, keeping that going
sometimes demands the letting go of other bikes. Also, sometimes the bike
that might bring the most $$ return is the one that needs to go, based on
circumstances, etc. Though it is not true at the moment for me, there have
been times when I realized the bike I rode the most was actually one of the
least valuable (to others) just because of locking bikes up or otherwise
putting bikes at risk.

I will say that my Joe A., for me, right now, with my current needs and how
I ride, it is hard to imagine a more useful, fun, adaptable bike. With my
set-up (Bullmoose bars) I wish it was a little less wide (and am working on
that), but it fits me perfectly and brings a smile every time I ride it. I
have other bikes that might do specific things better, but none of my other
bikes can seem to do what the Joe can do. There have been a few times when
I wish it were not so, as I am indeed the experimenter, and $$ are tied up
in the Joe and the Cheviot. But there it is, the Joe does everything I
need. Makes me smile, makes other people ask questions and want to ride
themselves, hauls groceries, can handle trail or road, fits in whether
fancy or rough

Anyway, I guess I would like to see more facts to back up the
impressions... The truth may not set us free but it surely can help.

Definitely got the enthusiasm but I guess I downplayed the tongue-in-cheek
humor in it.

Great that your wife is supportive--being 6'5" tall (I'm 6'3") a new bike
purchase isn't necessarily solved by trolling Craigslist for something
cheap to build up since we generally play at or beyond the fringes of the
bicycle size curves. It either means waiting a long time for something used
to come up, or buying something new that is the right size (e.g. $1300 Riv
frames).

Happy shopping!

+1 on Ron's take on Suntour RDs. I have several in my "on deck" drawer of
the toolbox. Just can't do better for the price. They simply shed wear
unless subjected to truly terrible conditions or physical maladies.

Shameless "WTB/Crowdsourcing" plug: I'm on an odyssey for a *Mavic 845
rear derailleur*. In the meantime I have had a Suntour XC Pro mid-cage on
my Rambouillet, operated by Power Ratchet bar-end shifters in friction mode
on a Shimano 8-speed cassette. I am also a fan of Suntour front derailleurs
of both the shaped and flat plate cages. The X-1 FD is a great,
cost-effective unit for 110mm BCD doubles (wide or typical) and triples. I
have one that has been in constant daily use on my series of commuters
since 2007.

Feel free to contact me with details of any long cage Mavic rear
derailleurs you may have laying around. We can discuss family treasure,

on my earlier post titled Road Rash.

*REDUCED TO $30 FOR 1, $40 FOR 2, $50 FOR 3, $55 FOR ALL 4*

I took pictures of everything but don't see how to post them, so please ask.

I will be visiting family in New Hampshire next week so whatever sells will
come with me and ship from 03253 on Thursday July 27th.

Pricing on the used items is based on 50% of new plus shipping, which seems
fair. I'm open to reasonable offers.

Riv content - all used items have been on my Sam. Proceeds are going to
offset the cost of a new medium sackville saddlebag.
