2017-11-07 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Oh, Ty, thank you - I’m touched. I’m glad to hear your dog made it through his
surgeries and that you’ve had many happy years. They go so quickly, don’t they.
I hope you’re able to squeeze every last drop of joy from his golden years and
that you know you did your best for him. He’s clearly been well-loved. And
cleverly named. Cheers to Guinness! And to you.
PS my dog continues to defy odds and act like a puppy. I have videos to prove
how bad off he really was. If not for those, even I would accuse me of
exaggerating his pain and suffering.

[RBW] Re: Microsoft Thumbies Inside Mount

2017-11-07 Thread Joe Bernard
It depends. You have to do the swap on pullback bars, but you could just rotate
them over on a flatbar and probably still have decent reach. But the swap is
what you're looking for if both sides are friction: You want the ratchet for
the rear derailer.

[RBW] Re: Bicycle Belle Ding Ding

2017-11-07 Thread Ty Smith
New to the forum and just have to say I love this post, particularly the
section about your dog. I read it out loud to my wife and we both cried.

I have two dogs, one of which is an 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named
Guinness. He had surgery for luxating patella on both knees when he was
very young. He is still very spry, but my wife and I can tell he is
starting to get achy.He will just come to a stop in the middle of a walk.
When that happens, we just pick him up and carry him home. At 12 lbs, that
is doable.

I am dreading the day when he is in too much pain to walk. I love your
solution particularly since it obviously gave him some relief. We have a
mini doggyride trailer that converts to a stroller. We got it years ago when
he was having his knee surgeries. At least we are ready to go when it
becomes too much for him to walk at all.

Thanks again for the story and the pictures. I hope your dog continues to
feel better.

Best,

Ty Smith
San Mateo,CA

Here are Guinness and Penny in the trailer doing a test-run on my Xtracycle:

Here they are posing in front of it out near the Facebook campus.

Guinness is closer to the bike.

2017-11-07 Thread Erik Wright
I just got a pair of these for a new build with flat bars but will probably
use them in the future on a build like this. In order to mount them on the
inside, do you have to swap shifters and use the front ratchet shifter for
the rear and the rear indexed/friction for the front?

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
The tires in this photos are Clement Xplor 40s, I've had Compass 38s, which
will also permit fenders easily, and right now it has 42 Somas. With
releases at the cable hanger and also at the lever, no need to deflate even
the biggest tires. I really like the vintage Dia Compe/Weinmann, and I find
that even the 750 gives plenty of well-modulated stopping power. I think
that is the 610, which I
switched to a Weinmann 750 because it just barely reached, and as pads wear
on the cps, they go up...

In any event, I guess cantis could be a nice option, as well as the two
water bottle mounts, but for most users I think the way it was spec'd is
right on.

I went back to RivHQ this morning to transact some business. Since several of
them expressed interest in seeing my Niner in person, I rode that in. Corey,
Roman, Robert, Mark, and Grant all gathered around and all of them had nothing
but positive things to say about it. Grant was particularly tickled that the
Lauf fork says “Just Ride” on it. Grant also pointed out that the Niner slogan
“Pedal dammit” needs a comma.

On my 55 Cheviot, I don't think cantilever brakes would add much tire

barely. The front brake is problematic, but in the end I don't think
removing it would create more than a couple extra mm.

[RBW] Re: Winterizing Ideas?

2017-11-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
Executive Summery Conclusion: Drum brakes and IGH (except Rollof and possibly a
7sp. Torpedo) are not designed for rough riding and folks who are riding IGH
and/or drum brakes off pavement are always fiddling with their bikes and it is
almost never a long term, reliable solution, but instead one that is always
breaking and needing fixing — the fiddler’s dream! Thus, neither is the
solution I seek and instead of a Tranformapillar, I will focus on the
Contentapillar. Grin.

The Journey
The last two days I’ve been riding the Hunqapillar in wannabe 3-speed mode.
It’s been a fascinating experience — similar to the simplicity of singlespeed,
but with the ability to shift to a certain point without stopping. A lot less
thinking about gear shifts, so I may well incorporate it into my routine,
essentially skipping two gears each shift.

I spoke with Grant, who was, as ever, very generious beyond all reasonable
expectations and even some unreasonable ones. He had some ideas on how to lube
the pivots in my derailure to possibly encourage shifting when frozen, or at
least making it easier for my hand to manually shift.

All of this is the result of a very good thing — ongoing brain healing that
allows me to be stupider farther out in all conditions. Grin. Thus I seek ways
to maximize the liklihood of my gear not failing 30 miles from home. Grin.

Thank you all for your generosity in playing with this with me. Ride with wild
abandon!

WIth abandon,
Patrick

Ace Hardware usually has a pretty good selection of bolts. From what I’ve
learned about bicycle fasteners, chrome-plated steel is stronger than
stainless, so that’s an option for you as well.

I was taught to tighten the binder bolt just tight enough so that you

I was so very tempted since the bike was my size. But I just bought a new

I think a pride of Rivendells is certainly aptor maybe an exaltation
of Rivendells

I just googled this but I remember reading Conan Doyle's White company
trilogy; especially Sir Nigel when he's quizzed about hunting terms by his
true love;s father

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_terms_of_venery,_by_animal

Slightly OT but fun anyway if you love language...as I do

Mark in Beacon -

AFAIK, the prime motivator for canti brakes vs long-reach sidepulls is
fender clearance (ameliorated by switching to long-reach centerpulls, as
you suggest.
An additional motivator would be better brake feel due to the long, flexy
arms of long-reach sidepulls or DC centerpulls (ameliorated by using
non-flexy centerpulls like Paul or Compass).
Another additional motivator would be the ease of removing a wheel from
open cantilevers (super easy), compared to open sidepull/centerpull brakes
(may need to deflate tire).

OK you were asking for the SIZE of the seat post binder bolt on a Rivendell

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread Leah Peterson

But Mark, you don’t understand. The dream Cheviot HAS to have two bottle mounts
because the Dream Cheviot is the world’s most over-prepared bike. At least
according to The Book of Leah, it is. The bike would have dyno lighting and the
heaviest-duty racks and giant Wald baskets and Sackville bags everywhere. Also,
the Dream Cheviot would go perfectly with my red End of the World Boots - the
boots I would grab if everything was falling apart. You know, like in The
Walking Dead. Two bottle mounts would be mandatory if I had to outride the
zombies. You can’t just have the Two-Fish thing jiggling around on the frame
like that, no sir.

[RBW] Re: Binder bolt and nut specs?

2017-11-07 Thread Brendan McD
It uses an M6 bolt and nut. I think the length of the bolt is 20mm, but you
may be able to get away with a shorter length.

I broke my binder bolt on tour and stopped in a local hardware store and
picked up a few extras for a few dollars. I put a dab of grease on it and
haven't had any problems since.

I was taught to tighten the binder bolt just tight enough so that you can't
rotate the seatpost in the seat tube, and that should be enough torque to
keep it from slipping vertically.

Re: [RBW] Re: Binder bolt and nut specs?

2017-11-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
haha OK

I think you are asking for what value to set on your calibrated adjustable
torque wrench for the seat post binder bolt on a Rivendell frame. Correct?

There is none. Tighten it just enough so it doesn't slip. Do not
overtighten.

Here's a link to Park Tool's article on the topic, where they have a
recommended value for everything, and notably say there is no value for
seat post clamps.
https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/torque-specifications-and-concepts#article-section-4

If I really really wanted a number, I'd use the same as the M6 bolt for
brake pads (44-60 in-lbs). The most common pre-set torque wrench is 5
ft-lb (60 in-lb), so it might be convenient to use one of those.

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread Joe Bernard
As long as it fits my 650b x 41 Fatty Rumpkins I'm happy. It may be a tad snug
with fenders, but I'm thinking of running roadie-style clip-on/pop-off
mudguards anyway 'cause it's dry here most of the year. Also, I'm not a big fan
of adding brake stresses to a frame in areas it wasn't designed for. Grant
designed this with road calipers and I like the long-reach Tektros he sells.

Hey Mark, your friend's Cheviot is my size. You gotta test it to make sure I'll
like it! ;-)

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
How much more tire would that get you, front and rear? The specs say it can
take a 650B/45 or a 700c/50. That is a ton o' tire. If you really need
more, brake reach is listed as 65 (Tektro 559?), but if you went with Dia
Compe 750 centerpulls, would that get you more height (which I assume is
the limiting factor here?)

Also, complaints about only one water bottle mount on the Cheviots are
popular. I have lots of bikes with none. Most of my rides I only need one
bottle, so I have some version of a clamped on holder. If I figure I will
be out all of a summer's day, I sometimes supplement with the twofish
bottle thing. Not the most elegant, but for occasional use it works just
fine. Or if all your riding is 40+ miles, you could use a clamped cage. The
Zefal vintage cages are pretty. I'm about to install one on my dress-up
bike. Or go super duper old school retro and get a handlebar mounted cage.
Fun! Or ride with a domestique or two. It's up to you.

BTW, tip of the hat to Joe B for alerting me to the Harris Cheviot. I in
turn told my friend, and she bought it then hopped in the car and drove
three hours to pick it up. I'll be seeing it and helping her get fitted
this Friday. Looking forward to it. Of course I will need to take a bit of
a test ride!

Patrick is right - you get twice as much gear change in the rear as the
front. But... you can get three times the range if you change them both,
right?

I had a plan to make a 2x2, mostly for fun. Once you've got a tensioner, it
may as well be a derailleur. Conversely, if you've got a chainkeeper in
front, it may as well be a derailleur. I think the main impetus was too
many parts in the bin, and redundant fixed gear bikes. And the White DOS
ENO freewheels don't have big jumps.

This will be a cool bike. As long as you're getting the custom paint, did
you consider have canti posts added? That's the one thing I wish my Cheviot

I did this ride on a Cannondale SuperX with 45mm WTB Riddlers.

Eh, mileage wise I’ve slipped quite a bit, but thanks! Last year I was

I was particularly struck by the misty, wet forest scenes -- very different
from high desert New Mexico, and not at all what we in most of the US would
first think of at the mention of "fall pictures." But beautiful; one
imagines elusive Tolkein-ian elves threading their way unobtrusively
through the undergrowth on their way to some mystical elven gathering
(probably to get drunk on miruvor. (Which leads my undisciplined
imagination toward that Simpson's parody of the Disney Snow White dwarfs,
but let's not go there).

Re: [RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Chris: I've always thought that the more shifting you can leave the the
rear, the simpler and better off you are; that's one reason, I guess, why
1X drivetrains are so popular now, and for decades people have been leaving
off the FD to make things as trouble free as possible. Front shifting is
always more problematic than rear shifting.

Also, you get a lot more ratio change from a tooth change in back than from
a tooth change in front.

So, I wonder what the advantages of 3 X 1 will be?

The Nokian A10s are good for regularly plowed roads. They measure around
35mm, so they'll look tiny on a Clem but would work fine for commuting on
plowed roads. I used them for a couple winters in Chicago on a 650b road
bike conversion.
They're not ideal for more snowy roads. For that I'd go with a 2.1" option.
Those should fit fine with fenders on a Clem, though the P55 are narrower
than what most might used for a ~50mm tire, they might actually be nice for
snow to be able to get out on the side rather than building up in the
fender.

[RBW] Re: Enjoying autumn colors

2017-11-07 Thread Takashi
Patrick and Ann,

Thank you!
I was smiling when riding under the trees, and when I came home and looked
through photos I took, they made me smile once again.

Patrick, I don't remember about trees in the US very well, but yes, we have
yellow, orange, and red leaves here.
But a friend of mine in Hiroshima (warmer place in Japan) said that it's
less colorful there in autumn, so it depends.

BTW, sky and cloud in your picture looks brilliant!
If you want brilliant colors of leaves, going near the trees and looking up
works better, maybe?

Takashi

[RBW] Re: The RBW Website has a new look...

2017-11-07 Thread Conway Bennett
I've always wanted a history section with retired models. Maybe just import
the cyclofiend site which I still reference and enjoy.

I agree that the red with the cream accents would be stunning. Good choice
and I also wanted to see pictures.
