I, too, decided it was the time to buy a new Sam. I had planned to wait a
year and sell a bike, or first, or look for a used one, but I decided it was
time to support Rivendell directly.

Re: [RBW] Roadini as commuter?

2018-01-08 Thread Jonathan D.
I think a Canti-Sam would work better. The Roadini sounds great but it doesn’t
have the room for fenders or the options with racks. The Sam is just a great
all around bike that can go as a lightish bike or a heavier commuter.

John, I’ll be most interested in hearing how the Paul Touring Cantis work for

[RBW] Re: Roadini as commuter?

2018-01-08 Thread Ed Carolipio
Hi Patrick,

Maybe the Roadini is not a good option if you like that front load? It
doesn't come with dedicated eyelets for a front rack, so you'll have to be
creative in figuring out how to carry that 10-15 lbs. It does have rear
rack eyelets, fender eyelets, and will fit most 32mm tires and a fender
simultaneously, so there are other options that can make it work.

>From other discussions about comparing the Roadini with other models, a Sam
would likely fill that role much better. The Sam can take that front load
but should have similar geometry and ride characteristics that you're
looking for. Not a Sam owner, though, so I defer to others on those points.

Hey, Y'all:

Yes, indeed!

I KNOW because I worked for TESTORS for nearly a quarter-century and also
with GRANT over a period of months to get him dozens of paint samples and
many sets of paint chips. (He will remember those early morning FED EX
deliveries I'm quite sure.) In the early 2000s, his intention was to have
all RIV frames painted to match TESTORS for the great convenience,
but...alas...that morphed over time as often things do in this life.

ATLANTIS, however, was the first of the experiments and so is exactly
TESTORS 2135. That's the story and I'm sticking to it!

So have a go and you'll be spot on. You and all the hundreds of happy /
lucky ATLANTIS riders.

[RBW] Re: Cumil the Peeper sold me a Canti-Sam frameset

2018-01-08 Thread Christopher Murray
"Don't get a 51.” That’s definitely an interesting line. I’d guess there is
something different about the sizing, that they are experimenting with some
aspect of the geometry, and/or there is some information that Rivendell wants
anyone who buys one to know before they buy— tire clearance?, toe clip overlap?
etc? different lugs? delivery time? H

I think I’d be a 55 but I test rode a 56 a few years back when Waterford made
them. It was too big by the smallest amount. It perfectly didn’t fit me.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Cumil the Peeper sold me a Canti-Sam frameset

2018-01-08 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Rod,

Congrats on the decision and the future new bike! I, too, ordered a 58cm
Canti-Sam (black/cream though I know the sage/cream will be beautiful as
well) and am extremely excited for the coming build and rides. It dawned
on me that I have loved every Rivendell I have been lucky enough to own and
ride (Romulus, Appaloosa, Cheviot... the Romulus now sadly departed). I
had always told myself if I found a cantilever Sam in my size I would do my
best to bring it home but I always thought it would a used one. When they
announced the latest canti versions, I knew I was going to be in trouble
but a trouble that made me smile.

It also dawned on me that I just did not care as much as I should about
most of the new tech and changes in the modern bikes I was looking at.
Cool stuff said my head, yawn and so-what said the voice inside. I just
love riding, exploring, and being able to successfully work on and
experiment with the bikes I ride. I also love having Rivendell there as a
resource and something of a place of refuge... a "storm home" to pull from
an old Garrison Keillor story. We vote with our dollars and our
decisions... Here's to the continued success of Rivendell and all of the
small bike companies doing their best to survive in this world. Imagine a
world without companies like Rivendell?! No

Anyway, congratulations! And congratulations for all of the reasons...

I second Phil’s answer, and because of it caught up with your question. Here is
my QB with 44 Snowqualmie under fenders. Worked fine, though the fenders should
have been broader for better coverage, and the clearences are more snug than
I’d like.

And here it is, same fenders with Steilacooms.

Note that knobbies and fenders are noiser.

[RBW] Re: Fendering a Quickbeam

2018-01-08 Thread Philip Williamson
My Quickbeam has 52mm Velo Orange Zeppelins, and 38mm Voyageur Hypers. I
would say the Quickbeam is easily fenderable with 38s.

I just did a big fender refurbishment, after replacing the rear mount, and
re-installing the front rack.
Here is a dark set of pictures from last
night: https://www.instagram.com/p/BdsVxA_Ff4p

I have my fenders pinched to drop between the chainstays for about 6 inches
of below-the-stay chain coverage. That restricts maximum clearance there a
bit. If you don't do that, you should be fine. I don't know how much the
Steilacoom knobbies stick out, though. I've often run a gap at the back,
for ease of removing the wheel or changing the gear, but I set it up with a
decent fenderline this time.

[RBW] Cumil the Peeper sold me a Canti-Sam frameset

2018-01-08 Thread Rod Holland
Last night I read Grant's Blahg, and these words clicked for me: "Don't buy
what you don't need, but also don't wait too long if it's in your cards,
anyway." So I ordered a 58cm Canti-Sam frameset, which joins a 59cm Ocean
Air Rambler F/F/HS+brakes and an old Nobilette go-fast frame and fork in
the winter-build queue. I guess that puts me at n+3, and I'm not sure which
build will come first, now, but it did seem like the time to buy a
Rivendell, from Rivendell.

[RBW] Fendering a Quickbeam

2018-01-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
Christian, I’m too dim to follow your question. I run the Steilacooms on my QB,
without fenders. If I decide I need fenders at some point, I plan to try
Compasses for the width of coverage.

The trick with the QB is to spread proper chainline so it leaves room for the
tire to slide forward and back in different gears. Looks a bit off, but
functions very well.

Hi Doug,
I've got two shorts, one knickers, and one pants. I like the latest design
of the shorts. Material is just right, pockets are properly sized (a
problem with the older version). I like the belt closure, too.

The knickers are my favorite for cooler weather. (Too warm for 50F+, as
they block wind really well.)

Durability of all are great. I play on the ground with my kids without a
worry when wearing knickers or pants. Work great for camping and wrenching
on the bike, too.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] frame bags on your Riv: anybody tried 'em?

2018-01-08 Thread Tim Gavin
Although I haven't used them on my Riv (it has a front randonneur bag), I
use frame bags on my four other bikes. On each bike, the frame bag is the
one that stays on permanently and holds the flat kit and tools.
Frame bags are great options, especially on bikes that lack eyelets for
racks. And they're a nice addition to a bike even with a full bag
component; they are convenient to access while riding.

I have the most experience with Revelate products; I have small, medium,
and large Tangle frame bags, as well as Harness and Sweet Roll front bags.
Revelate stuff is well-made and relatively easily available (from REI, for
example).
My only complaint with Revelate is the zipper failed on my first medium
Tangle, and Revelate only honors a 1-year replacement plan. They gave me a
good price on a leftover-stock Tangle, but I felt they could have done
better. FYI, they use higher quality zippers now which aren't nearly as
failure-prone.

I do recommend that you avoid over-loading any zippered bag; it can really
stress out the zipper.

I also have a Ruthworks SF half-frame bag, custom-ordered by another
listmember who had the exact same frame. That bag is more sturdily made,
of canvas instead of the ripstop synthetic fabric that Revelate uses. It
is very nice, but I've put less than 200 miles on that bike since so I
can't speak to its durability (though I assume it will last a very long
time).

Before you purchase, I suggest you measure, measure, measure. A too-large
bag will sag, but a too-small bag may leave gaps or not have long-enough
straps.

Consider the Wolftooth B-RAD
 or Shimano
SM-BA01

to lower your bottle cages. You may be able to fit two bottles beneath
your frame bag; though the one on the seat tube may have to be a 16 oz
shorty bottle.
By using cage adapters, I can fit two full size bottles beneath the
Revelate Tangle bag on my 59 cm Foundry Auger.

Also consider side-entry bottle cages. They make it easier to get your
water bottle out without shoving it up into the bottom of your frame bag.

Re: [RBW] Bikepacking with 38mm knobbies (Compass Steilacooms)

2018-01-08 Thread Tim Gavin
Data point: I'm 255# and have no problems with pinch flats on 38 mm tires
at 35-45 psi. That's on mostly gravel, with some rooty singletrack, a
couple cyclocross races, and "sending it" over curbs and such. I do not
ride lightly.

However, when I added a 20# s24o load, I raised the tire pressures to 45/55
out of caution. I say start with a higher pressure (like 45/55 f/r), and
then drop it little by little til you find the sweet spot. And bring a
couple spare tubes, as I'm sure you usually do.

I have both Barlow Pass and Steilacoom tires to try on my bike, but they're
waiting for my current Challenge Gravel Grinders (120 tpi) to wear out.
Iowa gets a melt and refreeze this week, so the Compass tires may have to
wait for me to try out some 45Nrth Gravdal (studded) tires first.

Re: [RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-08 Thread tc
Gotcha. The memory of riding SS mountain bikes a couple of years ago at
the US Whitewater center in Charlotte NC (what a blast) was the trigger
that caused me to start thinking about this t ole SS thing. Though my
riding will be on paved greenways and roads 90% of the time, I agree that a
different approach is required -- but thankfully it becomes natural after a
very short time -- which is part of the point -- and I hope -- more fun --
less thinking, more doing.

Brian, much appreciated. Yep, looking at your pics and estimating the
albastaches' dimensions, I think no changes would be needed in the
beginning just to test'em out, if I go that route.

Just enjoying your narration and pictures after 3 days/40 hours at work.
Very relaxing and vicariously rewarding. Looks tropical from the last few
weeks' weather here.
