I live in the area and could help you but like another person posted I'd
recommend just going to Bici Centro and you'll get it put together well and
learn a bunch in the process. It's where I put together my first custom
build. Ask for Raph. He'll be fucking stoked to help you put together a
Rivendell, trust me. Good luck. And seriously, let me know if you need
some help. I have an Appaloosa and have a friend who I ride with sometimes
who has an Appaloosa. Let me know if you wanna ride sometime.

Paypal for payment please. Regular goods/services is fine.
I can combine shipping with other items in my webstore (which I won't list
here), treetop.bigcartel.com.
Thanks,

2. Brooks All-Weather C19 Saddle - bought this from Riv during the Hail Mary
thing, mounted it once, went for an 'end of the alley & back' ride, I like it,
just don't have a bike for it right now as I swapped up stuff with the bike it
was on - $90 shipped

4. Shimano Exage Crankset - painted silver finish similar to Shimano's 'silver'
painted hubs and brakes, cranks were used on a short ride, were previously
new-old-stock - I set them up with 39t and 25t new Willow chainrings and left
the outer ring spot empty - $40 shipped, photos here:

[RBW] I tarted up my Clem

2018-07-16 Thread LeRoy
Joe has it right in his description. There is the slightest bit of interference
between the Nitto rack mount that goes through the fork crown and the
transverse V-brake cable. This does not affect braking performance nor is it
something that will interfere with items on the rack. After well over 300 miles
of use on my bike, the only sign of this interference is a slight burnishing of
the rack from the cable contact. It isn’t like the cable will saw through the
rack, but it’s just a wee bit sub-optimal.

Every nearby cycling route from easy to mind-boggling is detailed in a small

I don't understand why these tote style bags always have tiny little
handles. I would love one with slightly longer handles so you can either
carry it or put it over a shoulder comfortably. This is the case with like
90% of cloth tote bags!

I like the roll top feature, easy way to keep water out. Plain bag, tall
enough to roll down, slightly longer straps. That's all I need!

[RBW] Re: Wald 137 bag recommendations?

2018-07-16 Thread Jon BALER

I have a reload bag, and I’ve been very happy with. I don’t think it has a
shoulder strap, just tote handles. You could probably rig up something to
the buckles. I like how the roll top bag allows to me to expand capacity
as needed.

I don’t understand why the bag makers bother putting features on the bag to
attach it to the basket. I just have bungees over the top of my basket,
which keeps the bag in place and the roll top closed. I simply stretch the
bungees around the basket perimeter when I need to get to the bag. I also
put mating Velcro over the Velcro on the bag opening, because I found it
unnecessary and complicated interior bag access. The bungees and roll-top
keep it closed just fine.

The ball bungees typically stay in the same place, but I can quickly adjust
them multiple ways for small or large loads if needed. The swift bag has
limited capacity, and a zipper that can require two hands to open. And
putting a zipper on top of the bag where water intrusion is most likely
seems like a bad idea.

I have a Joe A and the older version of the Jones diamond Ti frame with the
truss fork - so not the LWB.. Although I love both of these bikes, the

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Ottolock

2018-07-16 Thread Jim S.
Thanks for the kind words all.

SeanMac, re the Ottolock, huge thumbs up. It's light, it's easy, and I like
a combination lock so I don't have to carry around a key. I'm sure the lock
is breakable, but it deters the unplanned theft. That's all I'm after
anyway. I don't think people want to steal bikes here in St. Louis like
they do in the Bay Area or New York. I'm sure it's not that people are any
more honest here - they just are not as interested in bikes.

Deacon Patrick and RichS, re the albastache bar, it is a nice change for
me. I started with albatross bars, but they felt too "slow." I don't know
that I go any faster with albastache bars, but I feel better leaning
forward. Perhaps it's a natural tendency to slouch?

Dave, re the bell, it's nothing I designed. I bought it from Tomii Cycles
in Austin, TX.

Joe Bernard, the zipties are for the taillight wire. Perhaps there's a
better way to route it? At any rate, the tail light works.

Rusty Click, that's a Pass and Stow front rack. I think you're supposed to
able to mount the light to the rack, and even run the wire from the hub to
the mount, inside the rack. But I'm not that handy. So the wire is ziptied
to the rack, and that's a Soma Wingman (sp?) light mount, that puts the
light out front.

[RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa, MIT Atlantis versus Jones SWB

2018-07-16 Thread ian m
I have a Clem and Jones Plus. When I lived in California and rode trails
that were beautifully groomed a bike like Clem was just fine. Then I moved
to PA and all my local trails are gnarly, root filled, technical
singletrack that are designed with modern mountain bikes in mind. Sure, I
could ride the Clem on them but with how slow I'd be going I might as well
just hike. So I started looking for a 21st century MTB and found Jones
bikes. The design philosophies of the two companies are so similar I felt
like I couldn't go wrong with a Jones. And I'm glad I got one because it's
a blast. It rolls over anything, feels stable on everything but still very
maneuverable, and good disc brakes offer one finger braking and total
relief from the exhausted and cramped hands and wrists I used to get from
underbiking on tough singletrack.

Use a left hand drill bit to extract. As the bit grabs the metal it spins

Re: [RBW] Re: removing broken hex bolt from rack mount

2018-07-16 Thread Howard Ramsay
Jason, here is a tip I learned working on similar screws over the last 50
years. Tape off the surrounding painted area. Apply a couple of drops of
penetrating lubricant to both sides of the damaged screw. Using a ⅛" drill
bit Carefully start a hole in the CENTER of the damaged screw. Slowly drill
into the damaged screw head approx. ¼ inch. Now Reverse the drill
direction to remove the bit. (As you do so the screw may self extract.)
Carefully repeat using the next size bit. Should you find you need to use a
Screw Extractor may I recommend Alden Grabit, available at Lowe's, Home
Depot, and Amazon. Remove the card on the inside of the case and Look
carefully at the pictures Twice before using the extractor. Note which end
of the tool is used first. The tool is only operated in the Reverse
direction. With a hole predrilled into the center of the damaged screw, it
should come out quite easily without damage to your paint. Here is a link:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/GRABIT-2-Pc-Kit/3030140 Hope this helps.

If you are determined to try it, here are several thoughts:

 1. The bolt is not aluminum. It's stainless steel. If the bolt was
aluminum it would be a far easier job.
 2. Did you break the bolt? If so, describe the situation. Did it

 threads
are full of paint? All this contextual information will give you a hint
 at
how hard it will be to remove the bolt.
 3. You will start by dimpling the bolt as close to center as you can.
Some people use a drift punch to make a dimple. Some may use a center
drill. Building a good support fixture and using a drill press would have
a much higher chance of success, which is one of the reasons why I'd
 consider paying somebody
 4. The larger the hole you can center drill into the center of the
bolt shaft, the better, for the most part. A bigger hole gets you more
contact area for your easy out. Sometimes with a big hole you can clear
out the rest of the material with a tap. But since you are already
borrowing a drill, you presumably don't have either an easy out or a tap.

I'd really strongly recommend at least having a good mechanic look at
it. If a good mechanic charged you <$50 to do the job, I'd recommend you

[RBW] Joe Appaloosa, MIT Atlantis versus Jones SWB

2018-07-16 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Jonathan,

Not sure about the 'DWB or LEB' but I own a Clementine and a Jones Plus
(original, now called LWB). I also have a Saluki which is my daily rider.

In my opinion the SWB vs a MIT Atlantis/Appaloosa is a closer comparison than
it may look. There is allot of riding philosophy that lines up really neatly
between both companies. The starting points are just very far apart. Riv
starts with the original BOBish/somewhat retrogrouch aesthetic with a
commitment to an all rounder that can be built to suit, Jones comes from a
competition minded, or at least very high level mountain biking with a bike
designed from the tires up as a fully integrated package that happens to accel
at many forms of bike activity.

But to really boil it down I'd say if you have a use or like the idea of 3"
tires and disc brakes go for the Jones, if you aren't sold on those two
elements or can't live without the sweet Riv aesthetics go with the Riv. Both
bikes certainly will do way more than what most of us are capable of anyway.

Or go my route, keep the Sam (Saluki in my case) set up more pavement oriented
and get the Jones as your off pavement primary... Then ride both on everything
and have fun.

I will say that a Jones with 2.35" slicks would probably be my desert
island/one bike if I ever had to choose. Especially with the unicrown fork so
I could run a front basket... Oh and at $1800 complete the SWB Jones is
practically in Clem territory price wise.

Tony
