No motor! I just sold all my e-stuff..I don't need it as much since moving off
that giant hill this year, and I needed to get back to "just riding" and get in
better shape. I still like it and will probably have another ebike again, but
not right now.

I'll follow up this comment with an experience with my wife's Betty Foy. I
bought the bike for her and was picking it up at RBW. I didn't have a
kickstand on any bike, so I didn't get one with the Betty Foy. The first
thing I do is lean in on a pole so I can get ready to load it into the car,
and sure enough it slips and scratches the paint in two places. Boy did I
feel horrible and my wife was MAD! I beat her bike up before leaving the
parking lot, ugh! I did learn my lesson and I baby my bikes now when I can
:).

[RBW] Re: comparison: Marathon vs Compass

2018-09-20 Thread scott minor
I’ve been running marathon 700 x 38 on my cheviot for some time, ultra smooth
riding. But my wife’s enthusiasm w her 650b x 48 panaracers got me curious
about extra cush so I’m trying out some Soma Vitesee 700 x 48 which are lighter
and more pliable than the marathons. I’m really enjoying the speed and feel of
the Somas in general. The one thing I immediately miss about the Marathons
though, and being a sound sensitive person (I’m a recording engineer), is the
s i l e n c e of the Marathons. The 48’s are louder but somehow feel faster.
I’ll give it some time but I’m now trying to get a feel for how important it is
to me to have a quiet tire. lightness and ease vs silence, to me that’s a
tough one.

Agree it is probably an honest mistake regarding the year. For the record, I
also don't have an issue with a well-worn paint job. It's just that this
particular level of abuse would seem to indicate a sub-$1,000 bike. For the
appropriate price, I'd gladly ride the heck out of that thing. It would be
liberating, in fact.

I bought from fellow Lister for my commute. However, I decided to rent a locker

Selling what I paid for it - $250 shipped.

Well, of course, we don't have any idea if this bike has ever been leaned
against a pole. And I think even this guy (who rattled off a whole list of
fancy steel machines, btw) knows that it is a bicycle!

I don't think anyone here is advocating "abusing" a bike, or purposely
treating it poorly. And I get that some folks like to baby their
possessions. I'll use the back wheel to lean, or the seat, before resting
the top tube against a pole, but mostly because I'd prefer not to get a
ding in the metal. Y'all would probably hate the majority of my bikes,
which have varying degrees of beausage. Once or twice I contemplated
painting a bicycle, but the original finish, with fades and scratches and
battle scars and what have you, always wins me over. To each his own!

[RBW] New Roadeo (to me)

2018-09-20 Thread Lum Gim Fong
53cm Roadeo

Bought the frame from lister. Built it up.
Usual Rivish component stuff.
Also:
40cm Nitto M151F bar.
SONdeluxwidebody/Pacenti Brevet/Sapim Race spokes/VO rear Touring hub 700c
wheels.
GB Cypress tires

Way easier to pedal down the road than any other Rivbike I have owned. Very
fast and doesn't bog down on hills. Just keeps its momentum nicely.
If I would have known this I would have not bought the first 4 Rivs and
just come up out of the pocket for a Roadeo from the start.

"Or maybe there is something to Jan's theory that bigger tires at low

I call this the "balloon effect". If a balloon is inflated to nearly
bursting, it takes very little deformation to burst. OTH, if a balloon is
inflated to much lower pressure, one can push a finger into it quite a ways
before it bursts.

[RBW] Re: comparison: Marathon vs Compass

2018-09-20 Thread Jeremy Till
I did a similar swap recently--I'd been riding the light-ish Schwalbes
(Kojaks and Marathon Supremes) on my LHT for a couple of years. Earlier
this year, I swapped in a pair of 700x42 Soma Supple Vitesse EX's, prior to
a long two day ride where a bit of extra speed would come in handy.
Honestly, no surprises on the ride front--they have definitely been faster
and at least as cushy, if not more, than the Schwalbes. What has been
surprising is the flat resistance--so far, no flats (I put them on in late
March). I did put ~2oz of Stan's sealant in each tube when installing them,
so maybe that helped. Or maybe there is something to Jan's theory that
bigger tires at low pressure get fewer flats since they can deform around
road debris without puncturing. I definitely haven't changed my riding
habits, and commute on this bike a lot. It's definitely ridden through a
few patches of broken glass and debris that I haven't been able to avoid.

We'll see how they fare as they wear, but so far I'm enjoying them after
being a #supple skeptic for a while.

2018-09-20 Thread lconley
I never lean my bike on the top tube on a pole. You lean the bike with the
seat touching the pole and rotate the pedal on that side backwards until it
touches the pole. The paint isn't touching anything. The seat prevents it
from rolling forwards and the pedal prevents it from rolling backwards.
Takes 5 seconds. Works 90% of the time. Been doing it for 45 years. Leaning
it on the tube is bike abuse.

2018-09-20 Thread Reed Kennedy
Glad so many of y’all are curating your bikes and keeping them pristine. I
really appreciate it when I buy ‘em used!

As for me? When I’m on a brevet and hit a control the bike is getting
leaned against whatever is quick and handy as long as it won’t damage the
metal bits. Part of the reason I went with a powder coat on my custom is
durability: I consider it a protective layer just as much as an aesthetic
feature.

I figure when the powder coat gets awful that’s my cue to pick a new color!

Now, my vintage bikes with their original finish? That’s a whole different
ballgame. I don’t like to rest ‘em on anything but a bike stand.

I should probably own fewer vintage bikes.

Reed

Riv hasn't carried it in a long time and I don't know if it is still

to get ridden. Ever have your shoe cleats hit a top tube? The results
aren't pretty. Ever have a bike fall over or slide one way or another
while parked? Ever crash? Ever have someone lean their bike against
yours?

[RBW] Roadini - How do you like yours?

2018-09-20 Thread ScottRS
I’ve got about 6 months of riding on my Roadini. I’m not exactly sure of the
number of rides or miles as I still ride my other bikes depending on the
weather or road/gravel/not road surfaces. For an all pavement ride, the
Roadini has become my first choice. It’s not especially light light or
especially fast, but both light enough and fast enough for just about anywhere
where there’s decent pavement.

That said, what I like most about this bike is the comfort. I can ride for
hours and be perfectly comfortable and ready for more miles. I built up a
fairly light set of wheels and am running a VO 30/46 crankset. That chainring
combo is spot on for me and really works well on the Roadini.

Aside from the all-day comfort ride, it’s simply a beautiful bike and every
ride is a pleasure. Highly recommend!!

2018-09-20 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
I’ve been running an sv-9 for a few years and it’s been great. However, it
doesn’t fully power the IQ-X on long/steep climbs, so you wind up with a little
flickering. That can be a little annoying, especially when riding with others,
but sometimes that just encourages me to ride faster :)

Nice looking bike, Joe. Good job.

Question: why do you suppose the brake cable runs on top of the tube rather
than at approx 8 pm? Doesn't get in the way slightly under.

much longer than 10 years, and by someone who doesn't know what it is.

You know, looking at it again, I kind of think the seller is full of bull. In
addition to the crown being strange, I haven't seen those dropouts used on a
riv since the late 90's. The decals are older style, too. Add in the amount
of use that thing has seen - especially for a guy with that many bikes - and
I'd bet anything that it's a 1998, not a 2008.

If it happened to be an ideal fit (I was two inches shorter) and I didn't
already have an ALL Rounder, I would pay that price. But ONLY if the paint was
near perfect. It's as close to that model as someone is likely to find, but
with some nicer details.

Because - again, if I didn't already have one - there's no question that's
exactly what I would have made as a custom.

Interesting that they used that crown (RC1 ?) as late ss 2008. It does fit
Rat Trap Pass tires though, in case anyone is wondering.

The prototype has rims that appear much wider than cliffhangers. Presumably
Alex manufacturer? Surprisingly, they may have even set them up tubeless,
judging by the oily spots by all the spoke holes. I dont know why we wouldn't
assume that they would make those same rims available for us buyers.

2018-09-20 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don't know, Joe. How are you supposed to treat a paint job? You rides
your bike, the paint comes along (or, every now and again--off) for the
ride. When I look at it, I see a gorgeous blue, the paint looks just fine,
especially for a 10-year-old bike. The owner apparently has a slew of
collectible steel, so I suspect the Riv may not have been ridden all that
much. I'd let my heirs worry about restoring that puppy. But yeah, at that
asking price, the scrapes and scratches will be a point a prospective
buyer, if so inclined, could use for negotiation, no doubt. In today's
market, cosmetic condition notwithstanding, the bike seems overpriced, even
for a Rivendell.
