Re: [RBW] Help me build my Roadeo, Part 2, CRANKSET

2018-10-26 Thread Steve Palincsar
Cranks don't break because you were so strong you snapped them, like
breaking a stick over your knee.  I've had *four* cranks break on me,
three through the pedal eye and one straight across the middle, and one
other that had a crack originating at the pedal eye that I found before
it progressed far enough to actually break.  It's not like it doesn't
happen, believe me.

[RBW] Philadelphia Bike Expo 2018 this weekend Oct 27 and 28

2018-10-26 Thread REC (Roberta)
https://phillybikeexpo.com/

Is anyone going? I'll be there Saturday, my first expo. There will be
indoor bike parking if you'll be riding. Philadelphia is a big biking city
(not like Oakland or SF though). Still, riding is dangerous. Just this
morning a cyclist was hit by a car.

Best places for lunch: Reading Terminal Market, just across the
street. Lots of food vendors there. If you like Asian cuisine, Sakura
Mandarin is excellent, corner of 11th and Race Streets in Chinatown (a
block or two away) has a selection of Japanese and Chinese dishes.

I live in town, if anyone has any questions.

Re: [RBW] Re: Silver 2 thumb shifters on the Blahg

2018-10-26 Thread R Shannon
Ginz,

Maybe it’s just me but the Shimano bar-end shifter used as a rear der thumbie
on my Atlantis is more comfortable than the Silvers (as thumbies) recently
mounted on my SamH; experimenting with placement will continue until I find
happiness or opt for an alternative.

If you have Riv’s black & white catalog from 2-3 years ago look at page 30
where Silver shifters are described. There is a photo and description of a
Silver specific thumb shifter. I don’t recall seeing this version on the
website. Perhaps it’s a special order? Or a Riv hack?

Best regards,

My Hunqabeam’s diagitube intersection with the seat tube makes a great thumb
“shelf” when I grab the seat tube to carry it. I miss beaing able to hook my
thumb under there on the Quickbeam for the same bits. Still, I carry the
Quickbeam the same way, grabbing the seat tube just where the tire comes
closest to it. Easy, well balanced carry.

Ginz, as Daniel says it is a bit of a cash outlay, but the Shimano bar-ends

Re: [RBW] Help me build my Roadeo, Part 2, CRANKSET

2018-10-26 Thread lconley
Aluminum will work harden - stressing and pushing it out of shape makes it
stiffer, but more brittle. Forging aluminum is a controlled process to
impart the desired stiffness and strength to a specific aluminum alloy
through work hardening. Think about bending the straight part of a hanger
(steel, but the principle is the same) - it is harder to straighten the
curve back out because the curve is stiffer once you have bent it than the
straight, and if you do it a couple of times - it will break. All metals
have this property (cycle fatigue life), but only two (steel and titanium)
have an infinite cycle life* if* you keep the stress below a certain level
(% of maximum). Thus if properly engineered, and properly used, steel and
titanium can last basically forever. Aluminum will always
eventually fail, and lower stress = longer life, but the lifespan is always
finite. This is why you don't want to ride certain well used French
aluminum handlebars and stems - they weren't always of the finest
materials, manufacture or design. This is also why you need to inspect old
aluminum parts if you still use them in highly stressed applications (steel
and titanium too if they are highly stressed). An old cottered steel crank,
even a cheap one can last a very, very long time, but that 50 year old
Campagnolo Nuovo Record or Stronglight Model 93 crank may need to be
retired to the bike hung on the wall if it has seen a hard life.
I still ride bikes and parts that are approaching 50 years old, but I do
not jump curbs, etc. - my parts have seen a fairly easy life.

[RBW] Re: threadless stem/steerer question

2018-10-26 Thread Drw
So i did get that nitto stem and put it on last night. The part i forgot to
mention is that im using a shim to go from 1-1 1/8. So the steerer tube
ended up being about 1cm below the top of the stem (which seems plenty
close) but the shim is only 4cm tall, so it sits considerably lower than
the top of the stem (which is about 7cm tall). a taller shim would fill the
gap, but i dont see any online that are very tall. Is this even a problem?
thoughts?

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 thumb shifters on the Blahg

2018-10-26 Thread Garth

A long lever fits and index finger rather nicely, great for reaching down
to the dt. Bar top shifting as I have used my Sun Tours since '84 is more
of a rotating motion like turning a key in a lock. Having a short thick
lever, more volume in hand, makes it bit easier for those tiny movements
than a long thin lever can.

Adapting dt levers top bar use seemed to me more out the lack of anyone
wanting to manufacture a Sun Tour-like shape. So everyone started copying
each other to build more adapters for levers and calling them
"thumbshiters" . It's like buying a generic version of something and
saying "it works/tastes *like* the original, but it is most assuredly *unlike
it *".

My son (now 9) and do a road trip every year from DC to attend. The boy

Since my son and I are tandem riders - he really needs to start pushing his

Re: [RBW] Re: Silver 2 thumb shifters on the Blahg

2018-10-26 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
It depends on where one mounts the thumb shifters though. If you don't
mount them "on top" and instead install them like what Rivendell typically
do (like such
),

then the lock-key analogy doesn't work. In fact, mounted "underneath" à la
Rivendell, the actuation is entirely thumb and no palm nor index finger. In
such a case, a longer lever arm is not necessarily a bad thing since it
reduces the force needed to shift, which for a sole thumb, can be helpful.

[RBW] Re: threadless stem/steerer question

2018-10-26 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
With the shortish shim, the effective steerer tube length ends where the
shim ends, and the part of the steerer that protrudes until 1cm from the
top of the stem doesn't count. From looking at the picture you've provided,
we know that the shim is tall enough to ensure the stem is clamped at least
adequately to the steerer (and won't pinch, which is unlikely for a steel
steerer anyways). Thus, the same question applies: does the stem require
the steerer to be part of the structure, or is 3cm of unsupported and
cantilevered stem OK?

DT lever shape was so perfect first of all they wouldn't be selling and
using the Sun Race levers in the photo , nor would they be investing time
and resources into their own short, wide curved lever just like the Sun
Tour !

Regardless, their are endless distinctions as exactly where/how
thumbshifters can be mounted/used. The "best way" is whatever way is
perfectly obvious for whom it is perfectly obvious, always totally unique,
never the same twice !

[RBW] Re: threadless stem/steerer question

2018-10-26 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I certainly can't speak from an engineering perspective but I think I'd
personally want that 3cm gap to be filled. Although I'd feel ok in the
short term with the stem and steerer both being steel if just testing fit
with a few short rides and I'd likely go ahead and ride it as-is before
going to the trouble of finding or making my own full sized shim. But if
deciding to keep that setup longer term I try to get a properly sized shim
to fill all the space.

I have a trashed steel frame from which I already cut and filed some small
shims from the middle of the downtube for a threaded 1" headset that needed
some space taken up. It's seamed tubing and I'd probably just try cutting
a single full length 7cm shim from that same downtube and cut the split at
the seam to help eliminate some filing and sanding. If I didn't have this
trashed frame I guess cutting down another 4cm alloy shim to the required
length is the other logical alternative.

I'm not necessarily opposed to such hacks but I'd have some reservations
with that excess air space between stem and steerer. For some reason I
feel like I'd be a little more confident even if the steerer itself was a
bit shorter if both steerer and stem were a matching 1" spec. I have no
educated basis for this and ymmv, of course.

[RBW] Re: 68cm Rambouillet

2018-10-26 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I'd love to give this tall Ram a new home, alas, I'm in no position to make
that happen with some recent financial challenges and a little one of my
own greatly restricting riding time.

I have an early 80's Schwinn Traveler (27" frame ~68.5cm) currently filling
that slot (lighter duty and more road oriented companion to my heavier duty
65cm Clem H dad-bike) and barely get any miles on that one as it is. If
you were local to me on the east coast and shipping could be avoided I'd
likely be more inclined to work something out and purge my less desirables
but can't justify it right now, unfortunately.

Best of luck with the sale. I also don't see an asking price noted and
you'll likely gain more interest with a stated price... I haven't done much
buying/selling through the group myself but think its a general requirement
to tag as a FS post and state a price.

Best,

[RBW] Anyone ridden both 26"/700c Atlantis'?

2018-10-26 Thread DarinM
I have a 56cm, 26"-wheeled Toyo Atlantis that I've recently realized is too
small for my 89cm PBH body (I know, way off). I've struggled with bike fit
all 8-9 of my cycling years and didn't really think the "Riv fit" would
work for me when I picked this frame up this summer. More recently, I
bought a 61cm Bleriot on the list and it fits like a glove! I'm still
happily riding the Atlantis, but can't help but feel like a 61cm frame
would be even better.

I really love the Atlantis and have it build up exactly as I like it. I'm
quite sure the fit would be an instant improvement but worry that the
quickness I like about the smaller wheels would be lost with the 700c
wheels. I know their not fashionable and tire options are limited, but I
think the small wheels work really well on this bike.

Anyone ridden both wheel sizes and have thoughts on the difference? More
likely to find someone who's ridden the 56 and 58, but maybe a 61, too?

[RBW] Re: Anyone ridden both 26"/700c Atlantis'?

2018-10-26 Thread dougP
Darin:

I have had a 58 cm / 700c wheeled Atlantis since '03, so that's my
baseline. I've ridden a couple of 56 cm / 26" wheeled & also a 56 cm /
650B wheeled one, and cannot recall any noticeable difference in
quickness. By quickness I assume you are talking about how fast it
accelerates.

My PBH is 85, so I'm in the overlap area between 56 & 58. FWIW, before the
Atlantis I'd had 56, 57, & 58 cm bikes, and got comfortable on all 3 sizes
with minor adjustments, mostly stem changes.

If your Bleriot is a good fit, that's the place to start comparing
dimensions. It's been said "can always make a smaller frame larger with
stems & seat height" which may be true to an extent, but being two sizes
too small sounds like a lot to correct.

There's an active market for especially 56, 58 & 61 Atlantis. Those sizes
fit a huge number of riders so there always seems to something for sale.

Very true. I have adapted Silver shifters to work better as thumb shifters
by grinding down shorter and capping with a Rustines rubber grip, and have
been pleased with the results, but it's a lot more work than using
something designed for the job.

I had a 53 and 55 Bleriot.
The 53 was faster. Less fighting against it than the 55.

Don;t know about Altlantis, and there is no way to compare between the Toyo

2018-10-26 Thread Lum Gim Fong
I am going to also say that, based on what I have read, I am under the
impression that 26" will spin up faster than 700c, but 700c is faster over
the course of a ride. And that 650b can be fast, but not as fast as 700c
(that part is according to Rene Herse bikes in Boulder Colorado).

2018-10-26 Thread nathaniel nichols
I've ridden that 56cm toyo Atlantis and converted in to 650b for a 300km
brevet, it definitely felt faster with 650b, could just have been the
faster compass tires though. I remember when I sold the 56 Atlantis I
always thought that specific geo was too big for me back then, now I ride a
"60cm" Rambouillet, a 60cm BDB Pelican, 59cm Black mountain cycles Road,
and a Large Surly KM and couldn't be happier. I have an 86ish PBH

IIRC you now have the same Atlantis I sold to a list member in Portland ?
The one from Harris Cyclery with the Bunyan velo sticker? If it goes up on
the market I'm semi interested in buying it back. I'm looking for a strong
frame to basket up and romp around Oakland and SF for work n other stuff.
Lemmy know if that interests you! I'm not in a rush but I did love that
bike and spent some pretty memorable tours on it.

2018-10-26 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
If you look at the geometry charts, Grant does use slightly different
geometry for different wheel sizes (especially noticeable is differing HTA
and fork rake). I think he tries to tune the handling feel nearly the same
regardless of wheel size. Obviously, acceleration might feel different with
smaller wheels, but I bet they handle pretty similar otherwise.

[RBW] Re: Anyone ridden both 26"/700c Atlantis'?

2018-10-26 Thread William!
I've ridden a 26" Atlantis, and I own a 61cm Toyo Atlantis. I also own a
26" vintage Stumpjumper which was set up similar to the Atlantis. There is
a difference in feel, but as others have said it comes down mostly to
inherent differences in the wheel size. I agree with others than 700c feels
faster rolling on roads, but on rough stuff I like the feeling of being a
bit lower. The 26"'ers take pot holes a little harder, but feels more sure
footed in other situations.

But IMO, the 650b Atlantis hits the sweet spot.

[RBW] Re: Anyone ridden both 26"/700c Atlantis'?

2018-10-26 Thread DarinM
Thanks everyone for weighing in. I know the geometry is varied to keep the
steering characteristics and bottom bracket height similar between the
small and large frames, but still was curious if there are any notable
differences in the way they ride, aside from the influences of wheel
diameter/weight. I do like the lower feeling that William noted in his
comparison, but 700c Atlantii (and all Rivs, really) have pretty low BB's
compared to other bikes so that's a plus.

Doug, thanks for the feedback. Pretty sums up what I'm starting to realize.
If it was a 58, I probably wouldn't even think about it, but two sizes is
hard to ignore. On the other hand, the 61 only has a 2cm longer top tube,
the difference is mostly in stack.

Nate, yes this the one! The seller didn't post it on list but it was outed
here by another member. Interesting that you remember this feeling large
given the bikes you ride now. I kind of have that feeling too. What brakes
did you use for the 650b conversion? I'm not interested in selling now but
will let you know if that changes.

William, did you own a 26" Atlantis or just ride one? How does your 61 fit
you? Did you feel noticeably cramped on the smaller size? It's odd to me
that mine doesn't exactly feel small, but maybe part of that could be due
to large tires and wide bars.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. If there are any 61cm Atlantis riders
in the Seattle area, I'd love to take yours for a spin. Will buy
lunch/beer/etc!

[RBW] Re: Anyone ridden both 26"/700c Atlantis'?

2018-10-26 Thread nathaniel nichols
I used those cheap tektro oryx ones, they have a large enough slot to move the
pad high enough for 584/650b wheels. it was an experiment so I wanted it to be
cheap. and i sold it shortly after I received my boulder bicycles 650b.

Oh yea, I remember exactly how that bike rides. I rode it quite a bit and it
was one of my more serious purchases back then, I got it around 2013, it was
very influential and still is on every bike build I still ride today
