[RBW] Re: New to me Appaloosa Joe!

2019-05-21 Thread REC (Roberta)
Nick,

Congratulations on your first Riv. My first (and only) Riv purchase was
just over two years ago and also an Appaloosa, but in butterscotch, not the
wonderful, watery blue of yours. You're right about it allowing one to
just enjoy the ride and the scenery.

I wish you many happy, relaxed miles.

Roberta

Joe,

I always seem to go back and forth on my love for Double tubers. When I
look at them in pictures it always seems odd, but when I look at them in
real life, I always think it looks great! In the end, I'm a bigger guy, I
ride bigger Rivs, and they come with Double Tubes!

[RBW] Re: New to me Appaloosa Joe!

2019-05-21 Thread Nick Morehouse
Re-posting because I typo'd Rivendelland I'm a little OCD lol.

After over 7 years of following Rivendell, and spending countless hours on
this site, and any other that is even remotely related to Riv and Rivish
biking culture, I finally found myself in a position last month to purchase
my first true Riv (no offense meant to Marco the San Marcos). One morning
while drinking my coffee before work, I stumbled upon a new post of a Local
Joe Appaloosa--in my size--in my favorite Joe color--and at a fair price!
So, after a couple days of worrying about my wife killing me, I went ahead
and made the plunge! AJ (short for Appaloosa Joe, which sounds to me like a
GREAT cowboy name!) somehow manages to take smoothness of the San Marcos,
and make it even smoother. Standing next to each other you can see how
much longer AJ is!

After the purchase I sadly had to Sell Marco. He went on quiet a journey
however and landed with another Group member all the way in Spokane
Washington! Shortly after the purchase I had to travel for a while so AJ
and I are still getting aquainted, we have been on several 3-5 mile rides
around the neighborhood with the family, but over the weekend I finally
took him out to stretch his legs...or chainstaysor wheels maybe?
Anyway, it was a perfect evening, and a perfect ride. I really enjoy how
AJ makes me relax my pace and enjoy the scenery and the sensation of using
one of mankinds greatest inventions.

I did ride about 5 miles of pretty rough gravel that really had me wanting
to get some wider tires on there pronto, but it was worth it to sit by the
lake for few minutes.

Finally as the sun crept through the trees we started heading back home.
Hopefully I will have many more adventures to post on here in the coming
months!

I have the small GBW prototype and I used to own a Joe. To answer one
question, no, I don't think the Gus is over built. I'm with Deacon Patrick:
trust the descriptions which Grant is providing when picking one versus the

As for big loads on a Susie, well, it's never a bad idea to load up a bike

[RBW] Re: WTB 52cm Clementine frame and fork

2019-05-21 Thread Jonathan D.
Great photo. Step though bikes are the future. I thought this was a Clem but
Jones Step through, though branded as a space frame.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxuVT2fBnDN/?igshid=165s8gixyyqpr

I love the description Jones has of what is basically describing the benefits
of a step through bike.

The Spaceframe design was Jeff’s original frame design, and he designed it to
help him navigate the rocks and logs in the mountains of Southern Oregon. The
frame’s top tube is low and out-of-the-way, which keeps the bike out of your
way on the bike in steep, technical terrain. A side benefit of the low-slung
design is that it’s also great for those with shorter legs because the frame
has a very low standover height. Its 3D Spaceframe design allows the rear end
to flex vertically which makes for a smooth ride, without the frame flexing
torsionally. These flex characteristics are most noticeable on the titanium
version because of the inherent flexibility of that material.

[RBW] Re: Maintenance advice, please

2019-05-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
Do you have a workstand? The "right" way to do things involves putting the
bike in the stand and proactively checking things. If you don't have a
workstand, then it's a different approach, which is more reactive to the
bike telling you something is wrong when you ride it. If the bike is going
in the stand, then your best advice will come from the "snobby mechanics
class" of iBobs. If your bike is staying on the ground, or is getting
flipped upside down, then your best advice will come from the less-snobby
maintenance wing of iBobs.

[RBW] Re: Maintenance advice, please

2019-05-21 Thread Philip Williamson
Nice bike to come home to!

I'd give it a good washing with warm soapy water and a brush. That will let
you 'take ownership' of it again, and really get to know it.

   - Check the wheel trueness, derailleur adjustments, and brake action.
   - Sand the brake pads a little, so they look fresh and clean.

Assuming everything still shifts and works like it should, you could spend
the overhaul money you save and spend it on new tires and NFS chain lube
(expensive, but only uses a few drops).

Good luck with the Atlantis!

Agreed that just a bit of water will be fine for most of that. Bikes are
meant to withstand a bit of rain, so okay to spray it a bit with the hose
nozzle on shower setting. Then I use a nylon brush (a toilet bowl cleaner
works great, but dedicate one for the bike rather than getting the one you
already have in the bathroom ;-). Avoid wetting any leather (like a brooks
saddle) though.

Feeling fancy and want to polish it up a bit and slightly protect some
bits? Try a little lemon pledge (avoiding the rims).

If it sat for more than a few years it wouldn't hurt to just replace the
cables and housing plus clean, lube the chain and
derailleurs/jockey/pulley.The hubs and bottom bracket are fine without any
attention. Then ride until something feels funny or makes noise and then
give that part some attention.

Very handsome bike, likes see a before and after picture of the dust to
washed ride!

There are three people who have ridden Gus with a load. I may exaggerate, but

My GBW is built perfectly for classic mountain biking (aka hillybiking), with

MTBing, even without doing stupid stuff, can be significant. I'd trust Grant

[RBW] advice on 26x2.0 tires

2019-05-21 Thread Adam Harms
Check out the Sim Works Homage in 26x1.95, and the Swift Tire Rip Johnson
Junior in 26x2.0. The homage has gravel king casing, and it seems to me the RJJ
is a folding non tour guard Pasela with some not so aggressive knobs.

What bag and for what use? I agree about the tobstone possible problem.
Hold the rack in place (w bag on) and measure distance to
eyelets/braze-ons. New struts are the cheapest path forward but if the bag
/rack relationship is rocky from the start don't buy the ring.

Lugged nitto stem with 48cm noodles

Re: [RBW] Re: Pool noodle as a safety device

2019-05-21 Thread ascpgh
What I object to is the differentiation between "assisted" and "powered"
being too fine for local government to discern and wield if those e-bike
classifications aren't already codified. The drift from "assist" to
fully-propelled guided by the mantra of more-is-better is at play here and
local authorities don't seem to be keeping up.

My urban environment becomes Appalachian in the span of a single ride that
includes parts of the GAP and the lawmaking encompassing those separate
worlds is slow and often antagonistic.

The good news is that in those less urban realms, the e-things don't go far
from the parking lots and access points. They are more of a hazard/nuisance
closer in where some commuters try using them.

At least the springtime hordes of Pep Boys electric motorcyle look-alike
"toys" piloted by inexperienced, unhelmeted, unlicensed adolescents seem to
choose the streets instead of the MUPs. By mid-summer their batteries don't
keep enough charge to be interesting and disappear until the next spring
swarm is purchased and released into the streets.
