Nice pics, Deacon Patrick. Some of those brochures you have, Chris L,
might be the ones I have. Mine aren't dated tho, and so I wasn't sure
which was the final iteration of the prototypes. Neat bike. Joe, I had no
idea it was in production so long. I think I missed it because I had some
spine issues that were only resolved with a fusion procedure a couple of
years ago. As my functionality has returned I've gotten back into
bicycling, and bought my first Riv earlier this year (a NOS 2017
Appaloosa). Anyway thanks everyone for the info. Eric, Spokane

I have several of the old Hunqapillar brochures saved on my computer and
the one where Grant states they have received the first frames shows a
diagatube bike, so I'm guessing the parallel tubes were only on some
prototypes.

The (old model) 54 Hunqapillar is the largest with a single top tube. The
brief 2nd model of Hunqapillar had different sizes but I know the 56cm had
a single top tube. I'm guessing the next size up would have a diagatube.

I think Ron / Bené / Ultraromance's entire bike collection would be my top

there are some impressive modern bikes there too. One thing I cannot find
attractive is a straight-blade steel fork though.

The diagatube was production on larger models (don't know what the size cutoff
was), you'll see a bunch on a Google Images search. The parallel tubes ended up
on a few Bombadils, which Hunq was the cheaper version of.

I like it. It’s big—bigger than even the Elemnt, which is on the large side.
Beautiful screen and mostly intuitive ways to get to and around the various
screens.

I put a prepaid SIM card in mine, and I can now create routes on the fly (it
doesn’t talk to the phone like the Elemnt, which is both a plus and minus).

Re: [RBW] Re: shipbikes.com vs. bikeflights.com

2019-12-30 Thread Conor Skelding
Just used Shipbikes for the first time on Saturday (after it quoted me $62
for the west suburbs of Chicago to Brooklyn compared to Bikeflights $87).

Now the Fedex tracking page shows an "exception," which I've never seen
before. Anyone know what this means?

FWIW, I just did a very rough hypothetical quote for the same hypothetical
package to and from the same zips, and ShipBikes was $23 cheaper than
BikeFlights.

**For what that is worth.**

Re: [RBW] Re: For Sale: Limited Edition* Dahon Hon Solo, with extras and trimmings

2019-12-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Corwin: The nearest LBS says $60 to pack and ship; I may try another nearby
shop that may be $5 or $10 cheaper.

ShipBikes suggests $75 for a full sized bike from ABQ to the northernmost
tip of Vermont

Expect about $140 -- IIRC, I shipped a bike recently and it cost about that.

I will use the cheapest, but only secure and insured for $500, packing and
shipping methods, so let's say $140 and adjust up (paypal net) or down
(ditto) as needed.

LMK the answers to the questions.

Thanks again.

Re: [RBW] Re: For Sale: Limited Edition* Dahon Hon Solo, with extras and trimmings

2019-12-30 Thread Patrick Moore
It is indeed still for sale, and it is yours, if you will answer a couple
of questions:

Presently it is set up with a single, front Brake -- Tektro 559, IIRC
pulled by the right lever. The left lever is the hood body only, but I will
include the lever proper and the hinge pin.

1. Do you want the current 15 t fixed cog (52 X 15 X 20 = 69" gear), or
would you like a bigger cog, or a freewheel? I have:

16 t fixed cog
18 t fixed cog

17 t fw
18 t fw (but cheapo ACS without apparent way to remove it without
destroying it in a vice; not sure, but this is possible)

2. Do you want me to install a rear caliper brake? I'll do so as part of
the $500 cost, but I'll also take of $15 if you take the bike with the 1
brake and the 2 levers as described.

*OR* I'll throw in a #4 HPX in place of the rear caliper and the $15.

3. I have a large basket that fits securely on the rear rack and can be
held securely in place with a single toe strap. It carries 2 loaded paper
grocery sacks and comes with a cargo net. Do you want this? Included in
price, but will probably cost a bit extra for packing and shipping.

Apart from these questions, the bike comes ready to ride, and with spare
tubes and the tools and bag as described.

I will check about packing and shipping; will have to get exact amount but
I will have it professionally packed, and then ship it the cheapest way --
the last time I shipped a bike, I saved the buyer $30 or more by picking up
the box at the bike store and taking it to FedEx myself.

I will probably try ShipBikes, said to be cheaper than BikeFlights and
possibly more reliable per recent threads.

I will get at least a rough estimate (Tim Fricker, sells folders) for
packing and shipping, and you can pay that amount. I'll refund any extra,
and bill for any deficit -- Is that OK?

Don't send payment until we get some of this worked out.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Clem L set up

2019-12-30 Thread Ed Carolipio
Drw mentioned earlier that Keith's rack sits too far forward and a bit high
for the Clem. The former puts most of the ahead of the front of the axle
rather than behind it, while the latter increases the moment of inertia in
the side-to-side direction. Leah's rack, on the other hand, sits several
inches closer to the fork and a couple of inches lower: note the distance
between the rear of the rack and the v-brake and the gap between the rack
and tire. That setup is more optimized for riding with a high front load,
if that's your preference when hauling stuff with the bike.

Re: [RBW] Clem L set up

2019-12-30 Thread Joe Bernard
Well no, just because Leah is a strong rider who balances front loads well
doesn't mean the bike was designed for that. Grant has very clearly stated his
frames have a 'carry the heavy stuff in the rear' bias because they ride better
unloaded with that geometry.

Alternatively this works well on low-trail frames and you can ride those bikes
all day with a big front load if that's your thing. It's not mine, I tried it
with a Crust and hated the handling with no load. I can't get my head around a
bike that only works with stuff in a front bag.

Re: [RBW] Clem L set up

2019-12-30 Thread Garth

Bikes are "designed" to be ridden. Just ride means just that. How that
plays out is PFM pure f'n magic ! F is for fun ; ) For every "this
frame was designed for X", there are countless examples like Leah who just
ride their bike as they intuitively know how to do without needing to be
"informed" of nebulous "intentions" aka "suppositions" . P F M is Life

[RBW] Clem L set up

2019-12-30 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I take pretty huge loads from trader Joe's using front lowriders on my step
through Rosco Bubble. Step through frames like my Rosco and your Clem L, having
pretty beefy forks, can handle weight on those forks. Just like our bodies,
they like that weight carried low and centered, not high and tippy. So yeah,
lowriders up front with the chips and cereal up high wherever you can get it.
As for rear loads, on my Clem H, a torsionally sturdy diamond frame (not step
through), rear loads are lovely. If you must rear load your step through bike,
don't try standing up to crank or put any substantial weight on the front of
the bike to avoid feeling your bike turn into a noodle.
Killer bike BTW
-Kai

Thanks for everyone's input. Shipbikes seems like a safe bet.

I have been using shipbikes for years with no issues. They are usually cheaper
than bike flights.

Re: [RBW] Re: shipbikes.com vs. bikeflights.com

2019-12-30 Thread Eric Daume
I'm starting to shift over to Shipbikes after shipping many, many bikes and
frames with Bikeflights. Mostly, I like my Fedex office better than my UPS
office; dropoffs are more convenient with Shipbikes. It does seem to be
generally cheaper as well.
