[RBW] beautifying beausage: caring for worn paint

2020-04-19 Thread Pancake
I recommended Meguier’s Ultimate Compound in the earlier thread, great stuff
you can work with by hand and a towel, you really can’t screw it up.

Any chance you could post some photos of the damage? Restore paint works great.
Mix a couple to get it close. Or just any fingernail polish if you’re inclined
to simply fill a chip - blood red could be nice.

The silver lining of this cloud is I typically can ride when & for as long as I

30 miles on a one speed Cruiser may sound like a lot, but my average speed was

Clem Smith Jr.'s require a chain plus extra. So unless the chain came from
a spool of chain and was made exactly to length, it would have required
pinning on an additional section, and then using a master link. As Patrick

Everyone's stories and pictures are so inspiring! Alas, I have no great ones,
other that I get in 4-5, sometimes 6, rides in per week, more than I was doing
before our current situation. Working from home and not commuting or working
until dark has freed up 2-3 hours of my day. I didn't feel like a ride
yesterday, so I went for a walk instead.

Inspired by Paul in Dallas' ride to the grocery store the other day, I hopped
on my She-Devil, the perfect in - town bike, and rode to a hardware store
across town, 4 miles RT. The basket and net on the back was a gift of AHH
owner who lived near me, moved to the UK, and offered it on the list. I love
it.

Once I got home, that bike went into my breezeway and I took Joe Appaloosa for
a nice 12 mile ride. Came home smiling.

Re: [RBW] Ghost shifting on the Clem

2020-04-19 Thread Patrick Moore
I feel your pain. I've suffered from that very elusive problem many times,
and gave forth a great deal of cussing before I wised up to the cause. The
problem is all the worse in that sometimes the chain will track fine in the
stand, and only start skipping when torque is applied. I took to rotating
the chain backward through my fingers to find the stiff link by feel.

Now that I use masterlinks almost exclusively, I don't have to worry, and
when I do reinstall a pin, I take proactive care to loosen the link when I
install the chain.

The stiff link ranks with punctures caused by slipping rim tape as the top
frustraters of bike maintenance.

Re: [RBW] Frame color!

2020-04-19 Thread Patrick Moore
The blue and the 2 greens are pretty. I have in mind a blue that is very
slightly darker; though who can tell when I look with my eyes at a color on
a screen. But when I had my Herse powdercoated, the blue seemed slightly
more cerulean and had a wonderful "liquid" appearance. As for the greens, I
prefer -- for "real" greens and not sage green -- a darker shade the "road
bike for dirt" is British racing green, but I also like that industrial
green that someone suggested.

Patrick Moore, just back from a nice bosque pavement + ditchbank ride, but
who forgot to take photos.

Now THAT’S a grocery run. Nice work! Very cool that your wife joined you for 30
miles - I had to trick my husband into 7 miles AND he has an ebike. Where did
you go for 60 miles and how long did it take?

200 miles for the month is awesome. I rarely hit that number.

I am also amazed at the numbers of bikes out on the roads and trails around
here. Really cool to see, also, I’m learning to share.

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-19 Thread masmojo
Dave, the Evasion has a fairly long top tube, so especially with a trekking
type handlebar you need a shortish stem. This is a 60mm FUNN stem ( yeah, I
never heard of them either); I think it's actually a Downhill stem?
The handlebars are SOMA Eagle bars, they were on sale really cheap & more or
less what I was looking for so it was worth a gamble! :-) I like them in a
general sense, but neither extension for or aft is long enough in my opinion
AND they are HEAVY. I really love the Evasion, but you really can go with just
about any bar/stem concert and be happy. All the builds I have seen are drop
bars, but my set up works really good and I think an Albatross set up would be
great and I would love an Albastash on this as well.

Excellent George.
Those sound like great suggestions for different types of paint wear.
If I can't get a small amount of helicopter tape (interested to look this
up) for a decent price, I'll contact you.
Thank you.

There was a blog post along similar lines a few months ago where a rider
had received a brand new frame that had scratches on the top tube and he
wanted to know the best way to remove them. He ultimately took the frame
to an auto detailer (a good idea if you have no experience using various
rubbing or polishing compounds!) However, one suggestion that was posted
was to use Mequiar's Ultimate Compound to rescue the paint. I bought some
of this and it's a great suggestion. But if the right chain stay, which
seems to be your biggest issue, is too pitted up from chain slap marks, you
may have to repaint or at least touch it up. When you've finally decided
what you want to do with that, then cover it with "helicopter tape" to
protect it from future damage. If you need a piece of that stuff to finish
the job, let me know. I have plenty of extra leftover from my application
and I'd be glad to send you some of it.

[RBW] Ghost shifting on the Clem

2020-04-19 Thread Wayne Naha
I should have posted this a while ago, when I figured this out, but that
clearly didn't happen. Now with lots of time on my hands, why not? I had
posted a coupe of times about the shifting problems the Clem was having.
Ghost shifting, never wanting to settle down on a cog, very sensitive to
the slightest input from the shifter, etc. At first, I blamed myself. The
last time I had friction shifted was back when five cogs in the rear were
standard. I figured that I just wasn't doing it right. I had tightened
the screw on the hex bolt on the stock shifters to prevent them from
slipping. This reduced the problem some, but did not eliminate it. For
some time, I rode the Clem as a single speed, since when I would finally
get the drive train happy, I never wanted to disturb it again. This was,
of course, unsatisfactory. And even though I had been told that the rear
derailer was not the cause of this problem, I began giving the wonky
looking Claris RD the stink eye. Finally, I decided to replace it. Even
though it could not be the cause of the problem. I did have what I thought
was a sexier looking Deore LX RD in my parts bin. If I was doomed to have
a chattering drive train, it would be with a nicer RD. But it was in the
process of changing out the RD that the root cause of my problem was
revealed. For as I am adjusting the travel of the derailer, and running
the chain through, lo and behold I discover there is a frozen link in the
chain!
After a few minutes of flexing the chain, the frozen link is freed, and I
finish the install. Now, when I go for the test ride, my Clem is
blissfully silent! Shifting is a breeze! I can have any gear I want!
Now, some of you old hands at bike maintenance are probably saying to
yourselves, "Of course, you big dummy! You should have checked that right
away!" Probably true, but I never expected this on a new chain. I've only
seen this on old, beat, rusty chains. Anyway, I have since apologized to
the Claris for wronging it in my heart, but it's still not going back on my
Clem. The Deore remains completely better looking.

[RBW] Re: St. Joe's, MI to Chicago route

2020-04-19 Thread Jim S.
I rode part of this route, Evanston to Michigan City, en route to South
Bend, way back in 1991! I can't believe it's been that long.

(I had a black and orange Cannondale mountain bike - I could have purchased
a Bridgestone and I have no idea why I didn't. I thought Cannondales were
so cool when I was 20.)

Were I to undertake this ride today, I'd just use the google map route for
bicycle. I just reviewed the suggested route. It's not awful. And there's
some nice parts, like the ride through Indiana Dunes.

The most direct route would be through Gary, which I think is probably
undesirable. I still remember my ride through Gary - I had no maps. I went
through Gary because I was navigating by following the lake. There were
four ferocious junkyard dogs that came barreling at me from various
directions as I made my way through town. For those terrifying moments, I
became a very strong rider.

[RBW] beautifying beausage: caring for worn paint

2020-04-19 Thread Matthew P
While on the topic of paint, what does one do, other than just enjoy it,
when the bike's paint has "plenty of beausage"?

I'm building an Atlantis whose paint has some wear. The areas where the
chain ate the paint are really the problem, although perhaps my approach
helps protect those places.

There are spots on this frame where it looks like you can see the clearcoat
separate from the paint underneath. I'd just like for those parts to blend
a little better and give the paint an overall cleaner look, just "smooth
things out" if possible. Not repaint. Not even touch it up (although I am
interested in getting some Atlantis Russian submarine interior green touch
up paint, if the people in the know see this).

I'm thinking I'll try waxing it, which would at least protect the paint &
metal some, if it doesn't make it look better.

I assume a rubbing compound would be too much, would strip away too much
clear coat and paint.

Would a buffing compound be appropriate?

I have little experience with paint care, clearly.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Frame color!

2020-04-19 Thread Matthew P
I'll gush...

I agree about the classy classic black with white details. Semigloss even
better. Those Rivs with can hang out with the classics.

There was a Rosco Bubbe that had something like a flat sage green that I
liked a lot. The flat/matte finish is like the gray that comes to mind
when you all say battleship gray.
I'm thinking of a gray that is so matte that its perhaps inconsistent,
almost sandy, like some parts are showing a coating of dried sea spray.

I absolutely love the butterscotch color that went on some of the Clems. I
stare at a small, older Mercedes in that color a few blocks away...and I'm
not even a car guy!

I saw a Bombadil in something like a copper. I think there's one in a Riv
YouTube video. Lovely.

But just last week I happened upon stonehog.com and found pics of Brian
Hanson's Homer in something like "light new penny copper" and that might be
my favorite paint of all time.

[RBW] St. Joe's, MI to Chicago route

2020-04-19 Thread Conway Bennett
The weather is getting good so I am thinking about riding from St. Joe's, MI to
Chicago on Thursday if it is an enjoyabl(ish) route. I would appreciate any
advice if you have taken a route that connects the two. Thanks in advance.
