Yes but roadies are fools. The best moderate width tires give a nice ride but
I’ve never ridden a 23mm clincher that rides near as well as a good hand made
racing sew up. Never got a pinch flat on a sew up either.
I think the European pros still race on tubulars. Of course their employers pay
for the gear, and their mechanics do the maintenance.

It's a prototype which was explained in the newsletter but I only included the
picture in this thread. The bike has the wrong front brake, production will be
v-brakes.

I don't know what predicated 700C, but my wild guess/conspiracy is the 650B
wheelset market has been overwhelmed by 27.5 disc and the future for nice
rim-brake rims in that size is not looking great. Rim-brake 700C road and
touring bikes are still prevalent so maybe this is an anticipatory move. Or
Grant just wanted that size this time, I'm just guessing! 路

I’ve had decent luck with the narrow Esge/SKS models that maximize the space
available for the tire. People also like the PDW metal fenders. None of those
have a rolled edge, which does help minimize spray, but also robs a
couple-three mm of clearance for tire on either side.

Re: [RBW] Tubulars on Rivendells

2020-04-24 Thread Bill Lindsay

No, tubular does not mean tubeless.

Tubulars, aka 'sewups', have the tire and tube sewn together as a single
unit. It is glued onto a special rim made for the purpose. Tubulars are
considered racing tires, and are considered kind of old school. Everything
that isn't a tubular is called a clincher. Tubeless is a form of
clincher.

Tubular rims are lighter than clincher rims of the same strength. Tubular
tires are generally regarded as more supple than clincher tires of the same
size. Tubulars were the only way to get supple tires back in the day. The
current renaissance of supple clinchers has closed the gap. Most roadies
don't think tubulars are worth the hassle. They are better, but probably
only just a tiny bit better.

2020-04-24 Thread Paul Clifton
WRT the lines and shape of this bike ...

It's really subtle, but it looks to me like the top and down tubes are
squished, like my Rosco Bebe. Does anyone agree?

I THINK that feature was added to make the frame stiffer rotationally
(twisting around the front-to-back axis) . I have a feeling that being able
to stiffen the frame by shaping the tubes has given Grant a little more
artistic freedom. It's really exciting to see that technique being used
again on an upcoming bike.

I wonder if squished tubes is also a feature on the Gus. Can anyone
confirm? Does anyone know any other bike maker who squishes tubes? I kind
of assume it common. People squish chainstays all the time. What about
steel downtubes though?

I ride a 54 +/- in most things. Bikes with 700c wheels look big to me now
that I'm used to 650b.

[RBW] Tubulars on Rivendells

2020-04-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
A few things came together and prompted me to build up a tubular wheelset
for my Roadeo. The rims are vintage MAVIC GL330s, and the tires are super
sweet Veloflex Vlaanderen which measure a true 27mm. Now my Roadeo tips
the scales at a legit <20 lbs. I am keeping my clincher wheelset as well,
but DANG, this bike is fast with supple tubulars.

Photo proves I rode The Three Bears on tubulars for the first time in 20
years.

[RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-04-24 Thread Joe Bernard
Ann: I'm having the same reaction. I was chatting with someone last night about
it shortly after first seeing and thought it was nice. Then later I really
started pouring over the photo and "Wow, this is really NICE!" I particularly
like the big 700C wheels on this 55cm frame, it gives it a certain elegance I
can't quite explain.

Roberta: I'm not sure the bend in the mid-stays would be more compliant than
the old straight ones, but they look thinner/smaller to me which might be a
benefit. Although I wouldn't consider the current model too stiff.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-04-24 Thread Roberta
I love the look of this bike! I do hope it comes in the luscious RBW blue,
but that silver is smashing also. Looks like it has some elements of the
Anniversary mixte and some of the Cheviout. Also, I hope they either keep
the name Cheviot or have another name that isn't ugly. It's a beautiful
bike that deserves a beautiful name.

Weston, you mention "soften the rear ride a bit." Do you have experience
with the Chev? I've ridden them and have liked their rides, but never
enough to want to buy one. In the back of my mind I've always wondered if
better tires might have made a difference.

[RBW] FS: Seagull Trail Breaker bag for Wald 137 Front Basket

2020-04-24 Thread Jared Volpe
Great bag. Barely used. Basically new. Not available anymore as Seagull
went out of business.

Side wings wrap over the basket to hold your bag in place, so you can hit
the trail knowing your bag’s going to stay in place.
No need for a cargo net and no more rattling on uneven terrain!

It comes with the detachable shoulder strap.

Asking $140.

[RBW] Re: 3-speed shifter QR: Is anyone willing to try this experiment for me?

2020-04-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Next question: does anyone have 1 or 2 of the old fashioned 3 speed AW-type
(I hear ASC has different indents) trigger shifters for sale or trade, the
ones with no plastic on them?

And: Does anyone have cables to go with these, the SA-type heads, not the
derailleur "button" heads used in the thumbshifters? The cables can be
used, but need to be long enough to run from a drop bar along 57 cm tt down
cs to hub. I will take up to 4 off your hands.

I have everything else; in fact, I have a trigger, but the sheet metal is
split on it.

Thank you. Once I get these things, you will never hear from me about
3-speed QR systems again.

Happy to pay $ or to trade.

[RBW] WTB: Mid-reach road brake, experiment

2020-04-24 Thread Joe Bernard
So I read in the Crash Stories thread about a fellow on a Frank Jones whose
front pads slid down his long-reach Tektro R559 and grab the spokes. Now I'm
noticing on my FJ that the pads are indeed near the top of my caliper and I'm
nervous. Will a 47-57mm reach work? Let's find out.

Allen mount, front or both brakes, I don't imagine I'll find just one unless
you had it on a fixie. Silver or grayish works.

Assuming you're talking about the Dyad wheelset, I picked up a 700c front
wheel to set up my Hillborne with a dynamo. It's served me well for about a
year now, maybe 2, commuting and around-town riding in Philly. It's my
first dynamo wheel so I don't have anything else to compare it to, but it's
reliable as far as I can tell.

I had it on a Black Mtn Cycles Monstercross for a while and the vibration
was noticeable, but I attributed that to a number of factors unrelated to
the hub itself. On my Hillborne, it's been fine.

[RBW] Anyone have experience w this Quality Wheels Dynamo set?

2020-04-24 Thread masmojo
Looks like a competent wheelset, price is reasonable. You could spend more and
get much better wheels, but in NYC it would probably be counterproductive to
put some really nice thief bait on any bike. Cheap and cheerful is probably
best.

[RBW] Tall Arm V-Brakes

2020-04-24 Thread Kurt Manley
I had a similar question when I ran a rack like that on my Hunq. I ended up
using some new XT v-brakes I got from Riv and they worked great. I ran the
cable under the rack though. It fit perfect and I had room for 29x2.35 tires
with fenders.

2020-04-24 Thread Michael Baquerizo
I'm attempting to build something that will last me, without breaking the bank
entirely. The majority of the build is accounted for between parts bin parts

A dynamo wheel set is non negotiable but the price is a big consideration. Does

I like this same attribute - the diverging midstays. Looking at this bike, I
feel like Grant took something fantastic and made it perfect. The shape is
RIGHT. The wheels are RIGHT. Rivendell has been nailing their color choices
lately so whatever those will be, they will be RIGHT.

I know we have to be patient but it is really, really hard. We’ve known about
the Fancy Cheviot for a while now, which came to exist after Riv nixed the
Anniversary Mixte. I wonder how long production will take...

Re: [RBW] FS: MUSA Atlantis. 56 cm / 650b

2020-04-24 Thread Nate in Oakland
I’d like to say that I own this exact frame and it is excellent. Here are some
pluses:
-Excellent tire clearance. I’m running 650x2.3 in tires and maybe have room
for fenders.
-Looks. Almost flat top tube and chain stays that are longer than older
models, but not super long like the current ones. Also features my fav
Rivendell lug set. Head tube lugs are more ornate than the newer version.
-Ride. The bike is fun and lively unloaded, but loaded is where it really
shines. I’ve done some heavy loaded touring on mine and it was just a dream.
I guess this is a given with the Atlantis.

I waited over a year for mine and paid full American prices for the frame and
I’ve felt that it was worth it. This is a steal!

Re: [RBW] Re: Semi-OT: chambray

2020-04-24 Thread Jay Lonner
Thanks for the Edgevale link - I just ordered one of their herringbone
chambray shirts, and we'll see how it works out.

As mentioned upthread, it really is possible to go down a rabbit hole with
reproduction workwear - I had no idea! So far I've received shirts from
Gustin and Buzz Rickson's, and while there's a lot to like about the
fabrics and construction, the vintage fit has proven to be problematic. I
am tall (6'3") with most of my height in my torso (32" inseam) so that can
present a sizing challenge. I typically do well with tall or long sizes
when available, which isn't an option in these shirts. So even in the
bigger sizes there just isn't enough length in the arms or torso. My wife
has claimed the Gustin and I'll probably end up reselling the Buzz
Rickson's on eBay. It's amazing that Riv's MUSA shirts fit me so well, and
makes them an even better value.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tall Arm V-Brakes

2020-04-24 Thread Jay Lonner
Funny that the topic of V-brakes has come up just now. Braking has been the
Achilles' heel of my Hunq. I've tried Paul Neo-Retros and Touring cantis
(currently equipped) and even after extensive fiddling informed by
Sheldon's articles they still don't work to my satisfaction, especially
under load and in the wet, which basically describes my commute half the
year. I've been nervous to pull the trigger on linear pull brakes because
of concerns that they'll clear the fenders, but after talking to both Paul
and Grant I ordered up some Motolites and Love Levers that are scheduled to
arrive today. So that's my SARS-CoV-19 quarantine project for the weekend.
One way or another I'm going to have some surplus Paul stuff to sell soon.

When I had Grant on the phone recently I asked him about the Riv V-brake
project, and he indicated that it's still quite far out. But while looking
at the IRD website I did come across this link,
https://www.interlocracing.com/shop/page/6, which has a placeholder for
"IRD Rivendell V-brake" - although at the listed price I think I'll pass...

I like the look of the fancy Cheviot. The swoopy seat stay is graceful.
It continues the line of the top tube through the seat post to the rear

[RBW] 3-speed shifter QR: Is anyone willing to try this experiment for me?

Calling out to Sturmey Archer 3-speed trigger users. I asked Aaron if it is
indeed easy to remove the shifter cable from a 3 speed trigger shifter, and
he replied, "Slammed! Will get back to you when I can."

Can anyone with too much time on his or her hands and an old-fashioned
Sturmey Archer 3-speed trigger shift system try removing the shift cable
from the shifter, and let me know how easy it is to remove and re-install?
If it is quite easy, then I will use that QR method for the new bike.

Many thanks.

I’ve had the same issues. I managed to get my Paul motolites to go under the
rack arm, but they still “clicked” when one side inevitably ran into it.
Minimotos solved the issue for me, but obviously not a cheap solution. If you’d
like to buy some Purple Paul cantis, now, I probably know a guy! :)

I bought some rebranded Tektro 857AL (120mm arms) recently - sold under the
CON-TEK brand from Hollandbikeshop.com. They were intended for Beach
Cruisers.

Tektro had some "long arm" V brakes that were designed for use with
fenders. I think they are Tektro 857AL. I saw them at my LBS and should
have bought them. I quick search found they were discontinued.
Maybe Ebay search will fins something.
