This isn't really an answer, I realize, but the 48mm Oracle Ridge very

Sounds like it has some further refinement from the Fleecer packed into its
design, for a modest drop in volume.

Re: [RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2020-08-13 Thread Jason Fuller
I have a hard time believing anyone outside the Riv-fam will find the
curved top tube of the CHG attractive ;) Honestly, the silver-grey proto
looks like a 1990s "multi-track" hybrid bike to me; extremely low key IMO.

It'll be a TIG frame in the ~$900 range (I hope), but more importantly
it'll be the build kit that makes me more comfortable locking it up. My
Hillborne is well decorated and gets constant compliments (partly due to
the orange, I'm sure) and I've invested over $5000 into it. The CHG build
would be much more utilitarian and low key - I would go with the most
understated colour option it ends up coming in, such as Greysilver, and it
would inherit many of its parts from the Clem (wheels/tires obviously
notwithstanding).

Basing whether one wants to lock up a bike on perceived attractiveness to
thieves is a flawed system I realize - it's probably more luck of the draw
than anything. But I know I'd be more comfortable locking up a CHG, as long
as I keep my upgradeitis in check.

2020-08-13 Thread Joe Bernard
New pics! Of my still pristine custom which Grant would be appalled by but
these COVID times have not been good for my riding opportunities, whaddyagonna 路

Some changes, I went on a bit of a Shimano NOS spending spree. The chrome-look
brakes ended up looking odd to me against the flat gray frame so they were
replaced by black (silver lever handle) XT. The Deore rd also got an XT
upgrade, and check out those nifty NOS XTR skewers!

Ergons swapped for Jones Grips, and that's my sweet new ti-rail Gilles Berthoud
Vars saddle.

Here's a neat thing I recently discovered: I was wiping chain grease off the
chainstay and pondering sticking a guard on there when I realized Joe Bell
already did. It wraps most of the tube, then if you look real close you can see
a cut line where a second clear guard fits behind the chainrings. Cool!

Next up, I grabbed the "lost and found" Bosco Bullmoose on the Riv site. This
frame was designed with Boscos in mind so they're going on, and the Losco setup
will end up on the Bombadil I just bought. Enjoy the pics!

I've had both. Cross check is a RAD bike. Pros didnt worry about it as much,
felt a little quicker handeling wise. Funner where quicker feeling handling
might apply. Cons not as pretty, not as stable feeling.

Sam H is a RAD bike. Pros bars up higher more easily. Prettier, more stable
feeling. Less tiring to ride / better comfort.

So as with anything YMMV. But I wouldnt hesitate to buy either. Both can be
alot of fun neither is slow depending on tires, setup and your legs. Both lean
towards durability over light weight. If I had to tip the scales one way or the
other I'd say this, longer more casual riding Sam. More energetic playful
shorter rides cross check. Either can do both of course but if I had to pick.
And I would be very happy either way.❤

[RBW] Thoughts on albastach bars

2020-08-13 Thread Richard Rios
I think they are great bars. Pair well with single speed riding. Have them on
my simple one and love them there because I am regularly moving my hands around
to chug up hills. Offer lots of good hand positions if you are the type who
likes to fidget. Get them up high and close as recomended, dirtdrop stem or
similar to your looks liking a great choice. Lots of fun. If you are just going
to be sitting and grinding away with your hands in a single position maybe not
the best choice but everyone is different...my recomendation is they are best
on a playful shorter distance ride kinda bike. A la single speed, city /
shortish commute, dirt road rambler...

[RBW] Thoughts on albastach bars

2020-08-13 Thread Joe Bernard
No, it's not a reach-back bar like Albatross, Billie, Bosco, etc. It's best to
think of it as what it was actually designed to do in Japan when dropbars were
banned from youth bikes (yes this is or was a real thing), a dropbar where the
curves have been pushed up into a more horizontal position. Most people need an
even shorter stem than drops would take to use it.

Have you seen these Andel cranks Joel, they're 110 BCD 170mm straight
arms from Andel, who is a well known quality crank manufacturer. They also
happen to make Rivs Silver crank. This particular crank only says "forged",
but frankly neither are many high quality cranks, like TA Carmina. It's the
quality of the forging and design that counts regardless of the
temperature. You'd have to inquire about shipping.

Re: [RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread Tom Goodmann
Bill, thank you for an excellent analytical inquiry, a lesson in clear
thinking and in asking the right questions. I prefer the aesthetics of
quill stems and the ease they offer for making small adjustments in height,
but see that the way toward realizing that objective may be expensive. I'd
be content, then, with a longer steer tube for the threadless stem in order
to have some options using spacers. Like MoVelo, currently I ride with the
bars at a comfortable height reached only via a sloping threadless stem. A
phone call with Mark Nobilette seems in order. --Tom

and extra spacers and another chainring. I have a SunXCD, but I run it as a
single with a VO chainring. For the triple, the outer chain ring bolts to
the crank and the inner two chain rings bolt to the outer chainring.

Peter White (peterwhitecycles.com) in New Hampshire is a US distributor for
TA and should be able to set you up with what you need.

2020-08-13 Thread Joel

After corresponding with a shop in the UK the suggest using TA Pro 5 Vis
Cyclotouriste. The day I could do a triple with this but everywhere I have
looked shows them as an inner/outer. For a bunch more money I could get a
110 adapter and use TA Zephyr rings which I have used in the past, even
have some extras here. But to be honest I am totally confused as I am not
mechanical. I was set to use either the Sugino XD600 but have found out it
is hot forged which I believe is not as good as cold forged. The VO
crankset I brought in has a slight finish defect on the outside of the
outer ring. Using the SunXCD is probablt $100 more since they are not
readily available here in the US.

Re: [RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread Bill Lindsay
I think it mainly depends on two things:

1. what exactly do you want to achieve?
2. what is your budget?

On defining the objective, it's not clear to me what you really want

A. do you want to convert to a quill stem specifically?
B. do you just want to convert to an easily adjustible stem because you
expect to move it frequently?
C. do you want to get your bars higher and be done with it?

If it's A then you need to change the existing fork, and buy a headset and
a stem and rebuild your cockpit. If it's B, maybe you just want a longer
steertube, since the previous owner cut it shorter than you wanted. If
it's C, maybe you could also get your bars up with a different stem.

The list of things I imagine are possible include

-ride it the way it is (free!)
-get a custom stem ($250)
-find a different stock stem ($ ??)
-get a fork threaded, buy a new quill stem, and a headset and labor ($500 ?)
-get a new fork, buy a new quill stem, and a headset and labor, and maybe
paint ($1000 ?)
-get a longer steertube fork but keep all other parts ($400 ?)

There are probably other choices depending on what the real objective is.

Yes. It is glorious.

For those that haven't gotten theirs and the inevitable second run comes --
on sizing: I am 6'2, 215, 34 inch waist (44 long sport coat) and the Large

Before you break out the tooling and cut threads onto the existing steerer

Re: [RBW] Tire Clearance? 55mm Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge Tires on a Waterford Atlantis

2020-08-13 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't own an Atlantis, but I'd be very interested to hear how these
things ride on pavement compared to the Antelope Hill -- or to the magical
60 mm Schwalbe Big One, in the 450 gram model.

I ask because while the Big Ones roll on pavement like the best road tires
I've used, they obviously require careful cornering in loose dirt,
including crusher fine-surfaced trails, and I wonder if the Fleecer Ridge
will roll very well on pavement while providing more cornering grip in sand
and on crusher fine.

2020-08-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Oh, and one more very big difference between the model and the image: the
new copy is made from standard diameter, relatively thinwall 531 compared
to the (in retrospect) excessively heavy tubing of the 2003 Riv, and the
difference is very positively noticeable as this is yet one more of those
delightful bikes that encourages one to choose a cog 1 tooth smaller. It'
doesn't "bog down" when you come to an incline or turn into a headwind, as
I had noticed over the years when comparing the 2003 with its even earlier
1999 Riv Joe Starck custom fixed gear gofast older sister, which also
encourages 1 tooth smaller.

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-13 Thread masmojo
I agree with a couple of points here.
First the idea and reality of trying to get another bike to be like a cheaper
Rivendell. I've had limited success with this as well; a CrossCheck, an old
650B Raleigh Mountain Tour, Kogswell PR and a Rawland Drakkar. Out of all of
them the Rawland came the closest and actually was better in some ways. But, at
the end of the day I would have saved myself tons of aggravation (& money) bu
just biting the bullet and getting a Rivendell!
I also chuckled when I read the part about riding "ON" a CrossCheck. That's
exactly how I would describe it! One thing to keep in mind, but just going by
the name it's obvious the CC was conceived as a cyclocross frame. As a result
it has a shortish top tube, higher bottom bracket, short chain stays, etc.
It's debatable whether it's dumb luck or pure alchemy that it excels at so many
other uses at all!
Actually, with a few more years experience under my belt I likely wouldn't do
the CrossCheck again if I was making a budget choice. I'd go Crust Bombora or
possibly a SOMA? The Saga and Wolverine's are intriguing options as well.

I have a Sam and have owned a few Cross Checks.
They are different bikes. The geometry is different, BB height is the big
difference, I think.
The cross check might be the one bike that has served so many people for
different uses.
Affordable, tough, versatile.
The Sam is a wonderful, well mannered, country bike. I think better geo for
getting the bars up etc.

I always felt like I was riding ON a CrossCheck and felt link I was riding

Re: [RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread J L
Tom,

If you want the aesthetic of a quill stem the best and safest way to achieve
that is to replace the fork with a threaded one, and a threaded headset.

There are other ways to use a quill stem or get a threaded steerer but they all
come with cost, difficulty, and various levels of safety concerns.

If you truly just want higher bars there are many threadless stems that will
get you there.

There is another thing to suggest as well. Have you considered trying to trade
for a size bigger? A larger frame will put the bars higher relative to the
saddle. Ive witnesses a dozen or so swaps like that happen.

[RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread Dave Johnston
Is the steerer 1", or are you going to have to source a 1 1/8" quill stem?
If it is 1", You could get one of these Tange headsets that locks the
Threadless headset in place and then allows you to use a quill. I would not
cut any off the steerer when you do this in case you ever want to go back,
definitely leave enough for a stem in case you ever want to sell the frame
and fork.
http://m.tangeseiki.com/jm/products/headset/standard/standard-threadless/standard-threadless-1/73-technoglide-quill.html

A few people including myself had the 1" Rawland Stag fork threaded. It's
rougher than factory threads but it works.

[RBW] Re: Converting a Legolas from threadless to threaded/quill

2020-08-13 Thread lconley
If the steerer tube thickness is the same, I think you can just have the
threadless fork threaded by a frame maker with the correct die. I believe
that the outer diameters of 1" threaded and threadless are the same (plenty
of people have just installed threadless stems on threaded forks, despite
warnings that the steerer tube is weaker at the threads). If steerer tube
thickness is the same, then the stem should fit in the steerer tube once
the nut is removed from inside the steerer tube - you can check this
yourself with a threaded style stem. If the steerer tube is too thick and
the stem will not go in, you can have the tube reamed or honed to size. If
the steerer tube is too thin, then you may be looking at a new fork or
having the steerer tube replaced in the existing fork.

Paul,

Regarding the Soma Supple Vitesse tires, how accurate are the size
designations when inflated? Or perhaps more to the point, if you have used
the 33 mm, is it truly in the ballpark of 33? I bought some Challenge tires
labeled 33 mm but they inflated to nearly 37 mm!

Secondly, in your experience, how puncture prone is the extralight version
compared to the standard version?

Thanks,

Got it! Both lovely tires. I’d bought up and squirreled away some Pasela
Tourguards back when they changed over to the “Protite”
Among them a pair of 26x1.75’s. I eventually put them on something but in
hindsight I wish I’d bought more. Just mounted my last pair of 700x35’s on my
“forever bike”
I don’t know why, but I can’t stand the colors of the label. The old TG logo
just looks right.
