[RBW] Re: Regarding Fenders - My Sam w/VO Wavy Fenders

2021-03-29 Thread Ray Varella
Veloman,
Go to velolumino and look under fender widgets, there is an item called a
TM Plugnut. It’s the solution to your fender mounting.

2021-03-29 Thread Jay LePree
Thanks Jeff. I am so glad it got there safely. The Trek bike store near
me is top notch. Bike flights made it very easy to ship. Enjoy it very
much!!! I have a lot of good memories with that bicycle. It should have a
light as well. (that is what the tape on the handlebar was for.) PM if it
did not ship with the light.

Re: [RBW] Fattest Tire on a QB?

2021-03-29 Thread Patch T
The largest I've confidently fit on my orange 56 were Soma Cazadero 42s,
Dyad rims, wheel around the back-middle of the dropouts.
I never tried any wider, as the chainstay clearance looks like the max for
my piece of mind. (I like riding it on rougher stuff than paved stuff, so a
hairline clearance is not an option for me)

I'd be willing to bet that the UDs will fit. AND I may end up doing the
same move once I put the QB back together. I have the 650b ROSE "mullet"
set-up on my custom Bantam and the combination of knobs in front and file
tread in back is super fun on trails, good enough on pavement.

2021-03-29 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Hey Jay - sorry, yes, the Supernova light made the journey as well. After
unpacking it all I disconnected the light and wiring and placed it in a
safe spot. In my excitement to ride the Ram I simply jumped on and rode
away. I will definitely reconnect it today. Yes, those good folks at Trek
knew what they were packing - they really wanted to make sure it made the
journey safely.

Yes Andy, I realize my descriptors were perhaps a bit on the bland side,
maybe closer to an ultra-light shade of beige ..*s*, we don't want *too

Re: [RBW] My New-to-Me Rambouillet

2021-03-29 Thread Patrick Moore
That's very nice, and I like the bar and brakes, tho' generally I
personally much prefer drops on all my bikes. I assume you'll install the
front fender?

And what bar is that?

Where does one find such guidonnet levers? Those might be just the thing
for my new MAP bar on the Monocog (installed flipped like your bar), where
all the vast real estate (I didn't after all trim the bar) makes lever
placement a bit puzzling. Levers like those could be installed ahead of,
instead of behind, the taped section on the curves, and still allow braking
from the straight sections.

Oh, and would those work with cable-operated disc brakes? Perhaps not ...

Patrick Moore, who fondly remembers his blue Ram.

impact ride or fit. I got these a while back and just never wear them.

The clearcoat over bare steel finish showed up on several proto frames of
various models and was offered as an option on production bikes for a short
while. It didn't take long for people to start fretting about seeing rust
form and that party was over!

Re: [RBW] My New-to-Me Rambouillet

2021-03-29 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Patrick, thank you!

The handlebars are Velo Orange *Porteurs*. They measure out to about 48cm
at the widest point (where the bar cons go). The brake levers are
Dia-Compe DC139s, I'm guessing nicknamed "Guidonnets." I did a quick
search and Blue Lug sells them, available in black only (Universal Cycles
was out of stock). Apparently they are available in either 22.2mm or
23.8mm clamp sizes. They are an interesting design, I'm thinking designed
to follow the curves of a porteur-style bar, enabling braking from many
hand positions.

I'm not certain if they would work (well) with mechanical disc brakes. I
would assume the two would need to be carefully paired together to ensure
the cable pull of the DC139 is appropriate for whatever mechanical disc
brake caliper is chosen.

Regarding the mudguards, yes, I hope to reinstall it. But, I will likely
install larger tires so that will likely put an end to that. In reading
the background story on the Rambouillet (thanks to Cyclofiend), Grant puts
tremendous thought into all of his designs. I'm thinking this would make a
fantastic rando bike.

2021-03-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Jeffrey. Good to know the guidonnets are still on the market.

Others: Any idea if the Dia Comp 139s would work with mechanical discs?
Probably don't pull enough cable as I guess they're designed for
cantis or calipers. They would be nice on the MAP bar with cable discs,
though.

[RBW] FS: 120 mm OL silver Surly fixed/free hub, < 500 miles, $50 shipped CONUS

2021-03-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Hollow axle for QR or allen bolts. Built but ridden <500 miles because I've
been riding the AM hubbed wheel instead. Comes with both QR skewer and
allen bolts if you remind me.

Happy to ship outside CONUS but you must pay actual cost of shipping in
addition to the $50; the total of $50 + shipping will include a few $$ for
the extra hassle of shipping.

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-03-29 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I’m so excited for you guys! Jonathan - is it a surprise or does your dad
know about his new bike?

Today I texted Mom’s neighbor, who plans for a 50 in mermaid. She made her
account and will have her finger at the ready on April 1. She’s a newly
retired registered nurse, and what a gift to herself! Mom has a Cheviot,
won’t they be a cute pair of neighbors on their Riv mixtes? This, in my

color and I was musing about nurses and Platys - Kate, Mom’s neighbor, and
I are all Nurses On Platys. We should start a hashtag. Or a public service

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-03-29 Thread Jonny P
Well Emily & Leah -- The excitement was short lived. Kevin went to call up
Riv, and since I missed the initial pre-order, Golden Pliers could not
actually order my frame for dad. Guess that's Riv policy. Thursday it is
for me. I set a block of time on my calendar so no one will bug me and I
will be sure to get one.

My dad does know this bike is being built for him. We spent a week in the
San Juan Islands riding our bikes and kayaking early in March. He realized
his bars on his surly were not high enough, his back hurt, and he has lost
the mobility to easily hop on and off a bike with a horizontal top tube. He
asked me what options there are for step throughs in his size with 700c
wheels. I pointed out the Clem, the Platypus, and the Soma Buena Vista
Disc. He liked the Soma for price, but I have had an awful experience with
Soma in the past so I ushered him to Rivendell. We were going to go with
the Clem L at first -- but he is mostly using this bike for daily 10-15
mile rides around vineyards and orchards in Cornelius, Oregon. The Platypus
is a little lighter and he didn't want to maximize to the 2.4" tire
capability on the clem. 700x45 on the Platypus with Billie Bars and a
fillet brazed stem all seem like they'll get his bars higher, his back in a
better position, and ease of getting on and off.

Leah - is it your experience that getting on and off the Platypus is pretty
effortless and doesn't require a wild swing of the leg?

2021-03-29 Thread Leah Peterson
Hi Jonathan,
Yes, this story is ringing a bell. I have both bikes and for what your dad is
wanting to do, the Platy is the perfect choice. I don’t have any wild leg
swinging. I step through the bike to get on, and when I’m coming to a stop I
raise one leg and step off the bike while seated. Does that make sense? I
should make a video... Anyway, it’s no big deal UNLESS you’ve been used to a
step thru (I was with my Clem) and then you are annoyed that you have to lift
your leg just a little bit higher. There are scores of Cheviot owners who also
might chime in here...

[RBW] FS: Albatross bar

2021-03-29 Thread Eric Karnes
Hi all. I have an Albatross bar that needs a new home. It's the
heat-treated aluminum version (B352AA), and other than some tape adhesive
(which I will clean off), it's in great shape. Only used a single season.
Shoot me a PM if interested / PayPal friends and family / $65 shipped Conus
/ $50 if you are in the Baltimore area and want to pick it up.

*Hopefully this works ok. I haven't posted since Google 'upgraded' Groups.

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-03-29 Thread Jonny P
Joe & Leah, thank you both for the replies. They're helpful in the decision
making process. It sounds from both of you like stepping through is a
little easier on the Clem than that Cheviot/Platypus. Given RBW propensity
to not really give frame measurements, it is hard for me to discern just
what kind of difference we are talking about here. The steeper angle down
then the swoop up on the Clem is probably the reason for that. When I
called and spoke with Will a few weeks ago, he made it sound like
difference in step through height is negligible -- yet both of you make it
seem it is more than that. A little thinking to do, for certain.

Do we even know when the Clem L's will be back in stock? 2021? 2022?
Perhaps I am concerned that it might be a great deal of time, and my buying
the frame for a dad who has provided me with a good foundation in life --
it makes the price difference not matter much. I want him to have a
comfortable bike sooner than later. But, maybe some wait is worth it.

Joe -- If I recall, you put a Clean Republic Hilltopper on an Appaloosa? My
dad rides with one of these wheels. It seems the Clem or Platy could handle
it given the e-assist isn't really a huge amount of power. Thoughts?

Thank you both!

Start about 1:35 for the 80-somethings, and watch closely at about 1:54 to
see one of these old men dismount by casually swinging his leg over his
handlebar. He's far more supple than I at newly-66! And he had just ridden
101 miles to get to the meeting.

I can do that but I have to be very, very careful lest I fall down.

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-03-29 Thread Joe Bernard
"Step-over differences"

This is all very subjective but for me the difference of a couple inches is
the difference between "that's super easy, I'm always doing it that way"
and "that's kind of uncomfortable, I'll probably avoid it." My situation is
a gradually creeping arthritis (it's a thing in my family) that's starting
to sneak into my lower back/hips area, and some days are stiffer than
others. Your dad may be more limber than I so this may not matter to him, I
just know that half the time I try the step-over on my custom (or Susie) I
end up kicking that dang tube. Ask me how I feel about scuffing the paint
on my bikes!

"Hilltopper"

Yep, I used it on an Appaloosa and it worked fine but I'm not comfortable
recommeding on the slender forks Riv uses. I didn't keep mine on very long
because it made me nervous, I would only use rear hub or mid-drive on a
Rivbike now.

I hope this information helps, just be aware that your dad may not
experience ANY of this the way I've described it.

2021-03-29 Thread Joe Bernard
Jonathan,

Of course you're right about availability. The Platy is NOW and I don't
have a clue when Clems are back. Personally I would jump NOW and not worry
too much about toptube height. Compared to what he's used to the Platy is
LOW.

I sent a video with stills to try to show the differences between Platy and
Clem. It was rather hastily shot, and I should have worn pants instead of a
tennis skirt so you could better gauge where that top tube hits, but it’s
passable.

If anyone has Jonathan’s quandary about which Rivendell is better for you -
step-over vs step-thru, email me and I’ll send the video your way.

[RBW] FS: 61cm Romulus complete bike

2021-03-29 Thread Nick Payne
I'm in Australia, so this would only be of possible interest to other
Australians, as shipping internationally is both too much trouble and too
expensive to countenance.

I'm selling a Romulus that I purchased new from Rivendell early this
century. It was my commute bike until I retired a few years ago, and as
I've hardly ridden it since then, I'm selling it. It still largely has the
original parts that Riv supplied:

Nitto 46cm noodle bars
Nitto Technomic 120mm stem
Nitto S65 seatpost
Brooks B17s saddle
Shimano 105 headset
Shimano 105 5500 hubs (rear re-spaced to 135mm with Wheels Mfg axle)
Araya rims, 32h front, 36h rear, currently fitted with 28mm tyres
Shimano BR5500 57mm reach dual pivot brakes with Shimano aero levers
Deore XT 9-speed rear derailleur

parts that I have added or changed from the original spec:

Deore XT M737 170mm cranks, 42/30 chainrings
Shimano 9-speed chain and 11-32 cassette, both almost completely new
Phil Wood 96mm bottom bracket
Campagnolo Mirage front derailleur
Dura-Ace 7700 9-speed downtube shifters - can be easily toggled between
index and friction
Berthoud stainless steel mudguards with Berthoud leather mudflap
Nitto R stainless steel bottle cage
Crank Bros Eggbeater pedals

The paintwork is in really good condition except for a scratch on the
outside of one of the fork blades and another on the outside of the drive
side chainstay. See photos linked below.

Price: $AU1500 plus shipping. Local pickup available if desired. I'm
located in Canberra.
