Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-04-25 Thread Will Horton
Dorothy - I’m so glad we ran into each other. It was so much fun to nerd out
about these bikes. We were impressed by the build of your Cheviot and all the
thought you put into all the little details. It gave Maia all kinds of ideas
for her next upgrades. Is your Cheviot RBW Blue? That color is awesome.

How many people do you think have these bikes in Simi Valley? Not many I’m sure.

That’s so cool that you have a lime green Platy on the way for your son. Simi
will soon have two Platy’s, one in each color.

Basically all interchangeable with some slight disagreements on the chain;
match the chain to the cassette say some, pooey to that say others.

[RBW] Are Shimano and SRAM 11speed mountain interchangeable?

2021-04-25 Thread Ray Varella
As a follow up question re; 11 speed on 8-9-10 hubs.

Are Shimano and SRAM 11 speed cassettes and derailers interchangeable.
David Person posted an article outlining the differences between freehubs.
Assuming the SRAM cassette designed for Shimano HG is used, do I need to
use a Shimano derailer?

If I use a Shimano 11 speed cassette can I use the SRAM 11 speed derailer?

Thank you
Ray

The Shimano M7000 series of components will work for you. As will SRAM
Apex and MicroShift XCD. The Shimano is easiest as there's no mixing &
matching, if it says "7000" it will work together plus the cost is very
 reasonable.

I predate indexing & remember well it's introduction (which was a
revelation) and I think friction shifting when you don't have to is
ludicrous all around. Heretic words here I know!

[RBW] Re: FOR SALE: Custom Rivendell Road Bike

2021-04-25 Thread Joe Bernard
One caveat about the sizing that's been worked out before folks think it's
too tall for them: I believe in that schematic the seattube has been
measured to the very tip of the lug, which is where that 65cm number is
coming from. Rivendell measures to the top of the toptube as it crosses the
seattube, which I think will be a number closer to the toptube number of
61, i.e., the frame is probably 62 x 61cm. Just a guess of course and no
slight on Helen's measuring, she's doing the best she can with what folks
have told her to measure.

I also offer my condolences, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Joe Bernard

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Wide range double crankset

2021-04-25 Thread Ray Varella
Joe,
I just measured the Sugino AT on a 127mm spindle. I get 153mm without
cinching the bolts down. This is just a hand press fit with a gentle tap to
make sure they are on straight.
Since you want a wide range double, I’m assuming you plan on using the
inner ring.
By eliminating the inner ring and running a compact double that would allow
running a narrower Q

I don’t think most modern cranks will improve on that for you.

Hope that helps

Ray

[RBW] Re: WTB: Wide range double crankset

2021-04-25 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I am not expert enough to explain where the differences come from, but
different cranks use different bb spindle lengths to get the same
configuration. The Sugino AT's just happen to use a relatively long
spindle but once installed they clear the chainstays exactly as they
should. That said, being a triple, the Q factor is going to be more than a
double.

Sheldon's BB chart is here: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html
(scroll down to the Sugino section for the Sugino AT)
I wish there were more Q factors filled in but hopefully there is enough
info there to do some comparisons.

If you do go with a double, the IRD compact double (46/30) might be on your
list... I have that on a Hilsen and it works great. I am sure there are
other great options as well.
http://boulderbicycle.bike/IRD-Compact-Crank-46-30-assorted-lengths.html

Hopefully other AT users (or ??) will chime in with more knowledge and
experience...

Bob

Crank length 170mm. The AT's are really nice. I'm afraid that going with
that wide of a BB may not feel right. Can you folks with experience with

26" wheels, saddlebag, RX-1 pedals -- is this an old mountain bike
conversion? The RX-1s are wonderful pedals, they make old Campy quills feel
like MKS Sylvans. (OK, exaggeration, but it makes the point.)

[RBW] Re: WTB: Wide range double crankset

2021-04-25 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I have had great luck using the IRD QB-95 BB (127.5) with the AT cranks, at
times using a drive side spacer (sorry I do remember but I will guess at
3-5mm for the spacer).

http://boulderbicycle.bike/IRD-JIS-Bottom-Bracket-QB-95-lots-of-sizes-best-bb-option-REGARDLESS-of-cost.html

The AT's are great cranks if you stay with a triple... and the BB cost is
going to be less than a different crankset.

Re: [RBW] What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-25 Thread Patrick Moore
My first full bike build, from scratch age 15 (high summer, December 1970,
90 miles south of the Equator; bought local frame, crank, bb, scavenged and
traded rest) had a 50 t cottered crank and 15 t fw for a 90" gear, and no
brakes because the frame was a cheap Indian copy of a Raleigh DL-1 frame
made for 635 mm bsd wheels, and my rear wheel was (steel, flip flop,
Czecho) 700C and the front 24" from my kid brother's bike. I rode it all
over the countryside on narrow, winding, really dangerous roads and in
downtown traffic without brakes, jamming my right Ked hightop against the
(small) front tire. I wore a deep groove laterally across the sole. Finally
I got tired of that and installed a flea market coaster brake, which must
have been quite worn, or perhaps the high gear was responsible, but it was
either on or off. Sold the bike for KS 150/- to finance a ratty early '60s
Varsity. How do kids survive?

Re: [RBW] What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-25 Thread Ray Varella
When I was a teenager and before I could afford a ten speed, I rode an old
green Raleigh 3 speed that I stripped down and put ten speed wheels on with
the chain in the center of the 5 speed sprocket. Removing the brakes,
shifters, heavy wheels and all the bits made it rally sporty. Aluminum
wheels made it the nicest bike I had ever owned. It had no breaks so I
would wedge the back of my boot between the rear tire and the seat tube. I
had excellent (in my mind) braking. The guy at the boot store wanted to
know how I wore the U-shaped channel in the heel of my boot.
I rode that bike everywhere and never gave it a second thought. It had a
Brooks saddle.

I currently have an Ibis Scorcher which is by far the best fixed gear bike
I have ever owned.
Once in a while I consider selling it but then I ride it and remember just
how great it works for me.

It currently sports 38mm Rene Herse knobbies. I think it’s close to as good
as it can be.
It looks like it would fit a 44mm tire in the rear but not the front.

I prefer fixed to SS and flip flop wheel has never been flipped beyond
checking the chain length.

Roberta, if you’re curious about such bikes, build one. I would advise
getting something that fits at least a 32mm tire, fatter if possible.
Only you can decide if it works for.
It’s a little like asking someone who rides a motorcycle why they ride one.
A dog hanging his head out the window of a truck understands why.

Re: [RBW] Re: Dim lighting on SON hub/Edelux II headlight

2021-04-25 Thread brian tester
Is the hub a SON Delux or a SON28? I ask because the Delux was technically
developed for 20" wheel bikes, with higher rotation rates. While it works
fine built into a larger diameter wheel (and will introduce less pedalling
resitance and will weigh slightly less than the SON28,) it will produce
less wattage as the the wheel diameter grows. So a 700c wheel with a
fattish tire will make fewer rotations per foot than an ideal 20" wheel,
therefore producing less watts. Add a tail light to the equation and the
hub will be hard-pressed to bring the headlight to full brightness.

The SON28, on the other hand, is recommended for larger diameter wheels and
situations involving additional lighting, i.e. a tail light, and device
charging via USB. Probably not exactly what you want to hear, if you do
have the SON Delux, but it could go a long way toward explaining your
frustrating lack of light.

2021-04-25 Thread Ray Varella
What crank length Joe?
The AT may need a 127mm bb with a +5mm to the drive side.
There is currently a cup and cone unit on eBay.
Those ATs are pretty nice cranks, it may be worth sourcing the correct bb.

Hi James,
The bike is still available.

Where are you located? I am in the PNW; I am happy to ship the bike (it would
be added to the $2000 asking price).

2021-04-25 Thread Joe Bernard

"I don’t have SON or SP hub but a shimano. I’ve used the same wheel on two
different bikes and feel there is some difference in the feel of the same
hub between the two bikes. I am much more likely to feel a bit of vibration
on the Atlantis at certain speeds than I am with the same wheel on my Trek.
Maybe sound too. Why? I don’t know, just saying - different fork, stem,

That's an interesting data point, Bill. Those Clems (Leah's other and
quieter bike) are thick-walled cruisers that seem to pick up any
noise/vibration from the road and spit it back out with the rider utterly
unaware of all that drama. I'll bet the lighter/thinner-walled tubes of the
Platypus are more prone to broadcasting noise and vibration coming from the
pavement and moving parts on the frame.

[RBW] Re: Sam sizing advice

2021-04-25 Thread Jason Fuller
Joe is quite right - and if you were a little shorter, I'd say whether to
go 51 or 54 would depend on what handlebar setup you want to run, but at
5'11" even with your inseam I am very confident 54 is your size. I'm
5'8.5" and 80 pbh and my 51 fits great with a short stem and drop bars, but
I would need to max out the stem length to run even Albatross bars - and
there is no way I could run L/T/Boscos, the bike would just be way too
short for it. Plus, I have lots of standover. I would have gone 54 if I
was planning to run upright bars, I think, although I'm the opposite on
wheels - I wanted 650B, and am not interested in 700c.

I am hoping that the Appaloosa gets a revamp to lengthen it akin to the
Platys, so it can be a dedicated upright bar bike with more appropriate
length. ie, I think the 51 should have a ~610 ETT, while it currently has
a 575. Plus, that would separate it out from the Atlantis, which could
still remain a drop bar-able touring bike. I think I'm onto something
here!

[RBW] Orange Roadini sighted Palos Verdes, CA, 4/24/21

Great looking orange Roadini, drop bars, and bar end shifters. Near Malaga Cove
Plaza on Palos Verdes Drive West. I was envious as I was in a hurry for
something work-related, and I had to drive by wishing I was out riding. I hope
the ride was good; a few good ones to be had in the area. This was Saturday,
4/24.

[RBW] WTB: Wide range double crankset

2021-04-25 Thread Joe M.
I'm building a Sam and setting it up with a 12-32 8-speed cassette. I have
a Sugino AT 24/34/46 that won't fit, even with a 122.5mm BB! It fits as a
double but I want more granny gearing!

Does anyone have a wide range double that they'd be willing to part with.
Ideally it would be 26/42. A Rene Herse or Specialties TA Pro 5 Vis would
be the bees knees!

Thanks,

2021-04-25 Thread Philip Barrett
I'm with you on that - made some big deals at a bike swap meet just
yesterday!

But that being said, there's a value to be placed on your time, stress
level & riding-zen. To my mind, if you can build up a reliable, smoothly
shifting system with the minimum of fuss for well under $200 new it's
probably money well spent.

I'm doing a 1x9 on my Platypus with existing parts from a Clem build,
however I have in the back of my mind that it may end up being a 1x11
exactly as we're discussing.

[RBW] Re: Dim lighting on SON hub/Edelux II headlight

2021-04-25 Thread Collin A
I'm late to the party, but this is eerily similar to what happened on my
Partner's AHH when I switched lights to the edelux (after it didn't work as
well as I'd hoped for trails on my bike)!

Edelux is finicky with tailights in that you need to get the polarity right
(- on the TL to the flat grounding spade -flat piece with a hole in it- on
the HL, and then + to +). Ben's test of removing the connections to the TL
from the HL should help with that, but its key to remove the connections
from the HL! If that fixes the issue, then you'll need to wire the TL the
correct way to fix itThis was on the SP hub. Also, I'm sure you checked
this, but make sure the lights are on the 'always on' setting, could be the
light sensor is dirty or something.

The noise and extra resistance you mention also occurred on my bike with
the SON hub, and usually was triggered from a little bit of moisture from
rain/wet roads seeping into the connection from hub to HL wire. For
whatever reason, when I installed the fittings I goofed and found there was
a loose wire and that ended up shorting the circuit from time-to-time and
was eventually fixed by pulling it apart and reinstalling the connectors
with a bit more patience. Then sealing it with epoxy before wrapping the
whole thing in heat shrink. All this to say, it was a poor connection
between the light and hub that contributed to that resistance (when the
light was on and connected). Bill's comment about fitting the light to the
Shimano hub should* also work to separate the light/dynamo issues.

The key with this kind of troubleshooting (as others have mentioned) is to
test each part by itself as much as you can and then isolate where the
issues are coming from. And taking notes!

Good luck, I know this can be incredibly frustrating!

[RBW] FFS - Greenfield Kickstand

2021-04-25 Thread Huston
Free for Shipping. Greenfield kickstand (KS2-305). The kickstand and foot
are in like new condition. I did cut the kickstand for a 57cm frame
running 650b x 42mm tires, so it probably won't work on a larger bike.
Also includes the short bolt (if your frame has a kickstand plate like most
modern Rivs). Here's a link to pic
.

Should fit in a Priority Mail envelope ($8.55). Send me an email/message
if you can put this to good use.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Help choosing brake levers for drop bars

Hi Paul,

Not as fancy as the TRP levers, but the Shimano Tiagra levers Riv sells
have worked exceptionally well for me on Noodles. Bear in mind my hand size
is small so these levers compared with others I've used have been the most
comfortable.

Good luck in your search.

[RBW] Re: Can an 11speed cassette fit on an 8-9-10 hub

2021-04-25 Thread Philip Barrett
Yes - provided it's a mountain cluster as the lowest cog (smallest) is
dished to fit the wheel.

The Shimano M7000 series of components will work for you. As will SRAM Apex
and MicroShift XCD. The Shimano is easiest as there's no mixing & matching,
if it says "7000" it will work together plus the cost is very reasonable.

I predate indexing & remember well it's introduction (which was a
revelation) and I think friction shifting when you don't have to is
ludicrous all around. Heretic words here I know!

Re: [RBW] Re: Dim lighting on SON hub/Edelux II headlight

2021-04-25 Thread Bill Schairer
Along the lines of adjusting beam, i keep tweaking mine until I get what I
want then, in a dark garage, I walk the bike towards a wall to see where
the cutoff line is that Peter talks about. For my conditions, I think I
like that line to be maybe 3-4 feet up the wall. But, try that with the
two bikes and see how they compare that way and adjust accordingly. That
may also be a more accurate way of judging light intensity?

I don’t have SON or SP hub but a shimano. I’ve used the same wheel on
two different bikes and feel there is some difference in the feel of the
same hub between the two bikes. I am much more likely to feel a bit of
vibration on the Atlantis at certain speeds than I am with the same wheel
on my Trek. Maybe sound too. Why? I don’t know, just saying - different
fork, stem, bars etc.

As for noise, there is so much wind noise etc in the one video I listened
to that I couldn’t pick out anything in particular. That said, I can’t
remember what kind of fenders you have on the two bikes but I once mounted
some metal Honjo’s on my Trek and I swear that rear fender was like a
whisper disk transmitting and seemingly magnifying every sound of the drive
train to my ears. I removed those, sold them and installed plastic
fenders. Maybe not as pretty but much quieter! Just another thing to maybe
consider.

At the end of the day, it may just be that everything about the C makes it
a better in the dark ride than the P? Sometimes that happens.

The obvious question is does the sound remain when not pedaling ? What
does what when you do what ? What doesn't ?

If I was a mechanic worth a penny I'd either ride with you to hear it,
or ride the bike myself, or have you ride around inside the store and run
along side. Just dropping it off and expecting them to experience what
you're experiencing in real time as you ride is rarely fruitful, as no two
people hear the same thing the same way, so it can become sort of a word
game of "it sounds like . ".

Anyways "stuff going wrong" is like a cosmic *slight-of-mind*
joke we play on ourselves . What for , one may wonder ?
Because we can. I ask for the sake of the ask, wonder for the sake of

Front derailers are the bane of my existence. I love the look of the
nice Campagnolo on my custom, but I'm super-OCD-fastidious about chain rub
and constantly adjusting the shifter to avoid it. My Susie doesn't HAVE a
front derailer, all I have to do is shift the back. No chain grinding, no
 OCD, I'm free! 
