Re: [RBW] Re: Velotaxonomy: What are we, anyway?

2022-01-19 Thread John Rinker
Leah,

Though this doesn't help with finding a group, as to your quandary
regarding our place in the velotaxonomy, I'm with rmrose in that we are
perhaps a breed apart. In some way, that's part of the charm.

Usually when people learn that I cycle (and rinse) they inquire, "What kind
of bike do you ride (implying road or mountain)?", I usually say, 'I'm a
Riv rider.' This often opens the door for interesting bike/cycling
conversations.

I just love it when people tilt their head at my down tube and read
'Hunqapillar' out loud.

Cheers, John 'We don't need no stinkin' labels' Rinker

[RBW] NYC Area Help: TA crank puller needed

2022-01-19 Thread Patch T
Hi NYC Folks -

TL;DR: Is there anyone in the boroughs that can lend me their TA crank
puller?

I installed a TA crank on a frame to measure the Q factor. My Q-riosity
sated, I then went to pull the crank and reinstall the arms the correct
way. But I can't for the life of me find my 23mm crank puller (haven't used
it in years). I've ordered a new one, but would love to remove it soon,
like before or over this weekend. I'm not having much luck finding a shop
with one. Anyone here have one I can briefly borrow?

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Nitto wire guard

2022-01-19 Thread Patrick Moore
I have one that I use very occasionally with a lightly loaded Carradice
Junior and a sometimes heavily loaded Sackville Medium. It was with the
Junior that it fell off under way, fortunately while I was walking the bike
-- or else riding very slowly -- across a busy road. It got tangled in the
rear spokes and twisted out of shape; fortunately it didn't damage the
spokes and I was able to twist it back into shape. It is not very stiff,
which a safety benefit. (It was indeed properly installed when it fell
off.) I think at least one other user had this happen to him. I've taken to
holding it in place with a velcro strap.

That said, I will keep mine -- for occasional use.

Re: [RBW] Re: Velotaxonomy: What are we, anyway?

2022-01-19 Thread Miles
Leah! Others have expressed good suggestions to your question but I wanted
to add my two cents, and mainly some encouragement!
First, I have no doubt you will eventually find some people you like riding
with. Might be a little tougher out there in Michigan (former Michigander
here) than it is on the California coast, but as others have stated, you’re
in a prime position to be an ambassador for the type of riding you’re
trying to do. I’m fortunate that many of my riding friends here are open to
all sorts of excursions: road, fixed gear, mountain bike, you name it. Yet
with the exception of Jared and Ariel, (hi guys) I’m the only one riding a
Riv in some of these situations. Fun people will love your bikes and be
impressed that they’re your tool of choice. People who scoff aren’t really
people I want to befriend anyway.
My initial concern was that you’d accidentally join a group that doesn’t
match your level of fitness. As others have observed, you’ll easily be able
to keep up with any casual/spirited ride. Knowing your average mph from
your rides is a helpful way to narrow down what existing group ride could
work for you.
But! My experience has shown me that if you plan a ride that has some kind
of peripheral non-riding activity involved (riding to food/beer is always
easy) you’ll draw some of the ‘quirky’ cyclists out of the woodwork.
Getting creative is the key: riding to an estuary for bird watching, riding
to a park with snacks for a picnic, planning a full moon ride to check out
an interesting old structure, who knows? When I make my riding fun-centric,
people seem to appreciate that. The focus becomes the people you’re with
and the experiences you share. When I ride in groups that’s my priority;
that everyone is having a good time. To that end, I usually outline terrain
and general pace when announcing the ride, so people know what to expect
and feel comfortable.

Reading your posts and seeing your bikes, I have no doubt the people who
will have the privilege of riding with your will want to continue to do so.
I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes!

I had a builder from montreal make me a similar stem. It was a touch
cheaper and faster than trying to track down a crust stem (i live in canada
and brokage and DHL shipping from crust is maximum and stock is terrible).
It has way more of a "handmade" aesthetic to it - but i enjoy that about
it. I don't have any pics since my bike is ripped apart in storage for the

[RBW] WTB: Large MUSA Knickers (recent model)

2022-01-19 Thread Paul Clifton
If anyone bought the large MUSA knickers from the last release and doesn't
want to keep them, I'd like to buy them. Please send me a PM.

I'm 5'9", 220lb and the XL is, to my surprise, too big. Vanity waist is
right! Anyway, they're loose but I love 'em, and I'm not ready to make a
1-to-1 trade, but I'd really like to try a large. FWIW - The XL MUSA pants
are a hair too small on me.

I'll definitely be buying at least another pair when the next shipment
comes in. These are probably going to be my favorite pants of my adult life
so far (up there with my green levi's corduroys I wore from when i was 12
to 22).

I'd consider an XL in the older model knicker too, but I think I like the
new ones more.

[RBW] Best grocery pannier? Nice lightweight wool cycling "jacket" or full-zip mid-weight jersey?

I'm curious if anyone has suggestions for the following that meet
possibly weird and certainly nit-picky criteria.

A. This is largely academic since the old Ortlieb Backrollers serve
well enough, but I do prefer a flap with Fastek buckle instead of the
rollup method of closure. So: What is the best grocery pannier,
defining best by my own criteria, in order of importance:
1. Single compartment large enough to swallow a full paper grocery
sack, and with no interior pockets or dividers of any sort;
2. Flap with single buckle.
3. As sturdy at least as the Ortliebs, tho' I don't care if it's
cotton or nylon canvas or tarp material; and I do not need it to be
waterproof, just water resistant (ie, not a sponge).
4. Has attachments with considerable lateral adjustment -- I must
offset large panniers to the rear on the bike carrying it -- I prefer
the Ortlieb-type of closure but I'm open to other adjustable systems;
5. Comes in red;
6. Has a nice convenient outer pocket big enough for a large bunch o' keys.

Criteria 1 thru 4 are required, # 5 is important, # 6 would be nice.

B. On rides like this afternoon's, 48-50 F but cloudy (full sun at 5K+
feet is the equivalent of +10*F in air temperature) I like a ls med
weight wool jersey + a second ls layer, and I've been using a full-zip
wool jersey bought deliberately large. But the fit isn't as good as it
might be. So:

What is a good LS, full-cut (to fit over a ls wool jersey) medium
weight wool (*wool* -- it has to breathe) with either a full zip or at
least a long partial zipper (must be easy to get on over ls jersey),
rear pockets preferred (I'd happily accept chest pockets, but it must
have cycling-compatible -- drop bar cycling -- pockets). Red, blue,
gray, orange, even, even black, but no pastels.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best grocery pannier? Nice lightweight wool cycling "jacket" or full-zip mid-weight jersey?

2022-01-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Sean; those are more than very nice, they would be perfect, except
that I would worry that the hook + bungee attachment system wouldn't allow
me to offset the bag sufficiently on the (much modified) Tubus Fly rack. I
actually like this simple, old-fashioned system, but but I wonder if it
would let me offset the bags sufficiently to clear the heels of my size 10
American Freedom Units shoes. (Note! I do not sneer at American Freedom
Units of any sort, just the kneejerk nomenclature. I am conservative, but I
believe I'm not stupid. I am also flippant and like to quote BSNYC.)

The bike to carry these does have chainstays at least 45 cm from center of
bb to mid-dropout; still, I had to offset the Backrollers pretty severely
to avoid heel-clip.

Can anyone comment on the matter above?

Is it a generational thing? Me, closing fast on age 67, I hate, hate, hate
using a phone for surfing web or email; this hatred includes texting, and I
tolerate texting only because it is my daughter's (age 20 1/2) default
communication system.

I tried an iPad and thought it merely a very bad laptop. With a laptop I
can reply to email and browse der Veb without annoyance, and I generally
improve my laptop experience by using a full-size keyboard and real mouse.

Again, is this a generational thing? I expect so: I rather think that we
oldsters don't expect to, and don't even want to, be perpetually connected
away from our desks.

I do agree: no g-d Facebook. I do have an account on LinkedIn for work, but
I hate it too.

don't give me any guff.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best grocery pannier? Nice lightweight wool cycling "jacket" or full-zip mid-weight jersey?

2022-01-19 Thread Mr. Ray
Instead of the Tubus Fly rack, you can use a Tubus Logo rack which have
rails offset and lower which will clear your size 10. For the bag
suggestion above, you can replace the hook and bungee system with the
Ortlieb system you are familiar with. Ortlieb sells their attachment
system under "spare parts".

[RBW] Re: Clem L For Sale

2022-01-19 Thread Doug H.
This is a bump and an update. I installed a Microshift thumb shifter today,
indexed, and I think it looks better than the bar end and works just as
well. I rode to adjust the shifting and the Clem rides so well! I just want
a more road-oriented bicycle. Still listed at $2,200 plus shipping. Mint
with upgraded wheels and tires as compared to stock.

Re: [RBW] Best grocery pannier? Nice lightweight wool cycling "jacket" or full-zip mid-weight jersey?

2022-01-19 Thread rltilley
I used the Arkel grocery pannier quite a bit and I really liked it. It meets
most of your criteria but has a zip top and not a buckle top. The new version
looks to have a draw cord top which would make sliding a paper bag full of
groceries in more difficult maybe? Their hardware is adjustable so it would be
simple to position it further back on a rack.

I still remember the family # from 1960: CY ("Cypress") 7-9537. I think it
was a party line in 1960, but it was converted shortly thereafter.

Rosslyn 219, Northern outskirts of Nairobi when we moved there 1968 *was* a
party line, but there were so few subscribers that it didn't hurt much. I
recall that we kept getting calls to a butcher's shop, which doubtess
explains my enduring fascination with butchers' bikes.
