Re: [RBW] Re: How are you building up your Platypus?

2023-01-02 Thread Ryan
Bob, that is a really smashing bike. Much as I admire Leah's green and gold
anodized Platypus, I also like the black and silver parts you've chosen. I
think they really complement the mermaid beautifully. Your wife is dying to
ride that bike, I bet. Nice!

Thanks, all. I think that I first combined sage green and red some 15 years
ago or so with that 2003 Curt Goodrich custom Riv Road in sage green with
cream accents after I had scored a pair of as-new but second hand set of
Ortlieb panniers in red; IIRC these were the classic rears made from woven
synthetic fabric, which I later traded for the Back Rollers in the photo.

The combination seemed to me both a striking contrast of colors and a
harmonious combination, and I've kept it ever since. I'm somewhat color
blind, so doubtless the beauty of more subtle combinations escapes me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Last ride of 2022

2023-01-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
I had to (HAD TO) ride on December 31st. My compulsive nature required it:
earlier in the month I noticed that I was in third place for the most total
new miles ridden in Alameda County, CA on Wandrer.earth. The prize for
logging the most new miles was ~300 points. In second place above me was
my friend Doug. In first place was a rider who I don't know. I clicked
their map and this is clearly a San Jose cyclist who has done "everything"
in Santa Clara County and has explored randomly but impressively up into
Alameda County. So, given the challenging but achievable mileage deficit,
and the identities of the competition, I decided to take a run at it. I
made a big push on Dec 28th, riding 100k on the one nice day between
storms. I did a short rainy ride on the 29th and a very short one on the
30th. I had only 6 miles to go on the 31st, but the weather was really
dreadful. For context, it turned out to have been the wettest single day
in San Francisco in the last 170 years. I chose a very flat residential
neighborhood on Alameda Island to go pick up my 6 new miles. I rode about
14 miles total and picked up 8.5 new miles and was absolutely drenched. I
certainly had the roads to myself. Fortunately it was not terribly cold.

In almost any other situation, it would not have been a day for riding. I
was pleased to achieve my target of winning the annual Wandrer bonus, and
I'm finding that those small, measurable victories help my state of mind.

[RBW] Re: WTB Albatross or Billie

2023-01-02 Thread Roberta
Brent,

Remember the football cheer from high school—“push them pack, push them
back, waaayyy back”? Billies come a lot.

I have albatross on my 54.5 AHH I think on a 7cm stem. I have billies on my
55 Platy on a 10 cm extra tall stem (10 cm is the biggest for that stem)
and although I love them and the additional real estate, I’ve been thinking
of cutting 1-2 cm from the ends. They come waayyy back.

Happy upright riding. You’ll get to see the flowers as you ride by.

[RBW] I’m considering selling my Susie…

2023-01-02 Thread Ryan Frahm
I want to say first off that I really love this bike! I ended up picking up
a Clem H to use as my commuter so that the Susie wouldn’t get as beat up.
Turns out, I like the Clem almost as much in reality. I was hoping to get
an idea of what might be a fair price so I wanted to list the build and
see. I’m not 100% sure I want to sell but I’m leaning that way.

Last run of the Susie, I got the frame in April size Large, Dark Gold 29”
wheels.

Sugar Wheelworks build SimWorks Standalone (Cliffhanger) wheels with CX-Ray
spokes, White Industries MI5 rear hub and Son 28 up front. These wheels
have less than 50 miles on them.

The pictures show Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge tires but I’d plan to put the
Ehline 2.5” back on. They have not quite 500 miles on them. Tubeless with
Orange Seal.

Rivendell 2 piece crankset 32/22 some scratches near the spindle drive side
but otherwise like new. New Race Face BB.

Nitto S65 seatpost.

MKS Bear Trap pedals. Scratched cages but still good shape.

Tosco 65cm with 135mm FacePlater stem.

Paul Components Love Lever 2.5 with Shimano DXR brakes.

Jim 7 speed cassette 13-42 with Sram GX 10 speed derailleur and Silver
shifter. KMC 10 speed EBike chain rated for 4500 miles. Works great with
lots of low range. Manual shift up front but the 22t is really just a bail
out if it gets really steep.

I plan to keep the rear rack, Edeluxe light and saddle. I also have new
grips I just haven’t put on. Small chip inside the chainstay close to the
front of the tire. Like I said, just trying to get an idea on price. I
would hope to get somewhere close to $4000+ shipping. Is that close or
crazy! Haha. Picture to follow. PM if there is any interest but I’m
definitely still thinking. Thanks everyone!

2023-01-02 Thread Jason Fuller
Beautiful build! $4000 is not out of the question if you find the right
buyer. My first thought was $3500-3600 as what I'd want to pay - but
doesn't hurt to start higher especially if you're not motivated to sell.

I think you should keep it and ride the beans out of it :)

[RBW] Re: I’m considering selling my Susie…

2023-01-02 Thread Ryan Frahm
Thanks Jason! That’s kinda what I was thinking and I don’t “need” to sell.

I might still keep it. I’m just considering a Tumbleweed Prospector because
I think it would make for safer winter commuting pulling my daughter. But
maybe I just need better studded tires on the commuter.

I don't know that it counts, but I took a short post build roll on a Trek
5900 OCLV carbon (Issue Bike) that I rebuilt. Rode it several blocks last
night and this afternoon. A bit rainy here today. May have gone longer if
it was not. here is to getting out on the bike in 2023, however you can.
Sorry, no pics.

[RBW] Re: Getting my groove back on with the Platypus - dealing with near misses

2023-01-02 Thread Pam Bikes
I understand how you feel. We all feel this way occasionally and most
places are car centric in that there is not bike specific infrastructure.
And gyms are located on heavily traveled roads as most businesses are. I'm
a Cycling Savvy Instructor which helps riders understand the traffic system
so you can have a better experience. I invite you to join me for my next
course Jan 27th. The classroom session is on Zoom so you can attend from
anywhere. Please let me know if you are interested and I can send you the
link. By all means you should be able to ride your bike wherever you
want. Cycling Savvy has helped me do just that. I make all my trips by
bike except one per week (to keep the battery charged). If I can, you can
too. I'm in Charlotte, NC which is also car centric.

[RBW] FS: MUSA Pants and Bar End Shifter Lot

2023-01-02 Thread Michael Ullmer
2023 is the year of simplicity and cleaning out the unnecessaries. Here's
my first cut, prices are net to me and don't include shipping. I'll ship
using Pirateship.

1) Riv MUSA Pants in Coyote Size Medium - $75
--I bought these and just don't like the fit compared to the earlier
Bik-R-Slakz that I have. I wore these about a half dozen times total.

2) Bar End Shifter Lot - $50
--These are the unused bar ends not destined for a project. There's two
left shifters that function just fine. The 9 speed right shifter has broken
internals and is essentially there for parts. There's also a single suntour
bar end that functions fine, but needs the expanding bolt from one of the
others.
