Re: [RBW] Re: Sharing your winter ride photos northern hemisphere Spring 2023

2023-05-29 Thread DavidP
Steve - Thanks, yes VO Fluted 63mm fenders and 700x50 Gravel Kings. There's
a detailed post about the fender setup in this
thread:
https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/TZyZuR9pWhc/m/i0wRKPqXBQAJ

I've really enjoyed this setup - it's a fantastic all-rounder and does
great on easy trails while being zippy on pavement. For something more
trail oriented or if you wanted fenders and larger (or knobbier) tires then
a Suzy (or the lugged replacement) or a Clem would be a better fit.

Great road bike setup. The drop from the 48 to the 34 is on the verge
of being too big, but it's nice to have the 34t small ring.

That bike is absolutely hideous, but to each their own! There's another
frame builder that did a similar build without susp correction and toscos.
I am certain many of Rivendell's design features will trickle into
mainstream MTB as some innovative tech (specialized / salsa) and
performance bike culture in general in the coming years. The way the XO-1
pioneered modern gravel bikes and 650b revivals...

Nice, yeah I also like the idea of putting the bar end shifter cable
housing under the ESI grips. I set up mine outside the grips and it was
just annoying to feel there. It was so annoying that I didn't even think it
would help if I used twine to tie it down.

The bike mechanic tells me he can put the bar end shifter wires through
the ESI grips. *Is this OK/safe/good idea?*

Another option would be to put the wire underneath the ESI grip and
wrap the grips with Newbaum’s tape to hold the wire in place.

A third option would be to put back what I have now with the wrap going
 over the wire.

I have honey colored Brooks B68 and would get the blue or tan ESI
grips, or honey for leather like wrap. Opinions, especially about putting
 wire through the grips?

Now this is an interesting collection of "over my heads."

Speaking of being ridden away from by people 20 years older than you, a
friend who just did his 3rd Santa Fe Century (he is 63 or 64 and *very* fit)
told me that women in the 70s do the entire 107 mile route in less time
than he, and nope, not on electric-assist bikes.

That reminds me of 2020, riding the then-new Matthews 2:1 with AM hub wheel
shod with, at that point, I think, the ultra-fast 28 mm Elk Pass tires:
76", 66", 57". I came up behind a 2-man paceline: little butterball of an
oldster in full lycra racing kit on an apparently top-end carbon fiber bike
with extremely loud freewheel (the usual fewspoke design and IIRC radial at
least on the NDS; does anyone know what brand this might have been?) being
paced by a 20-something youngster on some sort of utterly indefinable
generic aluminum road bike. I was in good shape, for me, having done some
group rides of 30 to 40 miles in the previous months, but I could not
overtake and could barely keep up with this team. I talked to the old guy
who said he was 74; I was 64 at the time.

Patrick Moore, now 68 and even slower than in 2020. [OTOH, earlier this
year was overhauled by another, much less-buttery 73 year old whom I'd
known 15 years earlier; he had been a notable in the ABQ racing scene and
even retired was in fully lycra kit with Orbea or somesuch. His first
remark -- I was again riding the Matt 2:1, now with Naches Passes, 75/65/56
-- was, "you've got a good spin," which was surprising since IIRC I was
torquing up an incline in the 75" gear.]

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Ride in Asheville NC?

2023-05-29 Thread Carl
Hi,
Thank you Gary for the update on the July 7-9 meet-up in Asheville!

As Gary said, we're planning a swap meet. We'll choose the location for
that based on how many want to participate and how much stuff you want to
bring. Could you let me know if you plan to do the swap meet and a ballpark
idea of how much stuff you might bring?

Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone in July, -- Carl

Hostel booked. Need to decide on which Riv (or Rivs). Is it all paved
and/or gravel? If so, I am thinking the Riv Custom with 650Bx48 Switchback
Hills would be the choice, so I need to quit dithering on the 90 vs. 100
stem and finally tape the handlebars.

2023-05-29 Thread Garth
Nice Leah :-) Thanks for sharing the story and accompanying video !!!

Yeah, there's gravel covered hard pack dirt/rocky roads then there's
the kind of which you speak as a kid that are soft and deep, ploop your
tires go. Standing in it is even more comical. That's what I remember our
gravel roads in Minnesota being too... ploopers.
