[RBW] Modifying my Hillborne

2023-06-28 Thread Andrew Wright
Good morning folks!

I’ve recently been inspired by Eric Marth’s build videos on YouTube and
want to change my Sam up a bit, mainly moving from road bars/bar end
shifters to something like a Bosco or albatross with thumbies. Problem is
I’m not very familiar with changing parts out like brake levers, shifters
etc. Can anyone recommend some good resources to better understand this
work, these parts and what’s compatible with what? YouTube, books,
whatever ya got. Truly appreciate any help y’all can give me.

[RBW] Re: FS: Atlantis 54.5 (Waterford) in Exceptional Condition

2023-06-28 Thread NR MR
Hey there I am also in MA and am interested. What is your height? I was
reading on Rivendell's size charts that they would actually put me on a
55... but that is according to the new sizes. If this is an older model it
might change, but what is the minimum pbh for this? Happy to go out and
test ride it too!

Re: [RBW] Plush old 531 steel frames (was being precious)

2023-06-28 Thread Andrew Scherer
I hear variants of "plush" used when folks discuss steel and particularly
531 but I'm not sure what to make of it. I have 6 bikes with 531 frames and
I ride them all: 1970 Raleigh Pro Mk I, a Falcon San Remo of undetermined
age but likely 1969-1971, a 1971 Raleigh International, a 1972 PX-10, a
1972 Paramount, and a 1987 531c Mercian Professional. Sizes are 62-63cm for
reference, and most of them run Compass or similar Panaracer tires. Each
has different characteristics related to how the bike responds to steering
effort delivered at the front end or through shifting weight/center of
gravity, and a general sense of what I'll call rigidity. Perhaps it's
because they're all the same base material, but I wonder if geometry,
wheelbase, and tires makes more of a difference than materials. They all
feel "comfortable" but the range is significant. The PX10 and the Falcon
have a strong self-centering steering feel and the PX10 requires more
effort to change direction. I'd say "steady and predictable". At the other
end of the spectrum the Mercian has criterium geometry and feels very
light, the steering is super responsive and at the same time the whole bike
feels more solid/rigid than the others. I didn't like riding it on
rough/urban roads until I changed the tires from 23c Michelin Pros to 28c
(that barely fit) Soma Supple VItesse. The Raleigh Pro and International
fall somewhere towards the PX10 to different degrees, and the Paramount
seems to be smack in the middle. FWIW I've had the Mercian since it was new
and if I could only keep one, that would be it.

Anecdotally, the International was the first of the above I added to the
fleet some 7 years ago after a friend convinced me to buy the frame. I
built it to more or less the catalog spec and took a first ride with him.
As we came up to a small pothole on a descent I used my Mercian reflexes to
shift the bike around it and ended up sailing right through it...not enough
"oomph" for that setup!

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Legolas 54 FFHS

2023-06-28 Thread Valerie Yates
Love that!! And your adorable dog clearly does too. I used to think that's
where we were headed. With his recent vestibular issues, I don't think my
dog would appreciate it. It is like having vertigo. He has regained enough
balance to enjoy our neighborhood walks but a quick shake of his head and
he can fall right over. He's even become anxious in the car -- which never
used to be an issue. I do think my younger, smaller dog would enjoy that
someday (that I cannot begin to think about).

 Questions:

 1. Valerie, why did you sell this unobtanium of the Rivendell line of
 bicycles?

 2. Those who have ridden the Legolas and the Ram, the Roadeo, or the
Roadini: How does the Legolas feel in ease of maintaining speed,
acceleration, and both nimbleness and stability of handling, with
 more-or-less similar builds?

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Legolas 54 FFHS

2023-06-28 Thread Valerie Yates
One more thing occurred to me. I've been spending huge amounts of time in
my back patio with my sweet old dog, who is now 14, very arthritic, and
just had a bout of vestibular disease. Because I want to hang with him, I
haven't had as much time for riding. Instead, this has been an ideal time
to evaluate my assorted bikes and think about which ones I am most looking
forward to riding in the future. Has been clarifying.

I am offering for sale one of the legendary Legolas: frame, fork, Chris
King threadless headset, and bottom bracket. Anyone interested likely
already knows this bike was designed for cyclocross racing and thus is
super lightweight, nimble, and fun. You also know that Riv is not taking
custom orders at present and that they are out of decals for this model.
The yellow is striking. It is a very racy yellow. Pictures here
 .

 Seat tube is 54 c-t. Top tube is 54.5 c-c. I’’m 5’7” with an 82 PBH
and I used a 60 stem. The person I bought it from was 5’10” and he had a
110 stem on it. We both had the saddle at 72 (as shown in pics). It takes
700c wheels and is shown with 700x38 tires.

It has various chips in the paint and some wrinkling of the decal on
the seat tube. In this size frame, there is some toe overlap. This is
an issue only when making very tight turns at very slow speeds. It is not
apparent at riding speeds. If either of these aspects will bother you,
 this
is not the frame for you.

Price is $1800. Add $100 if you want the pair of Paul canti brakes with
moon units. Add another $100 if you want the Rotor crankset (170 length)
and Sugino chain rings (40-34). Everything else is omitted from sale. I
will pay for it to be professionally packed. Buyer to arrange and pay for
shipping. Local pickup is available in/near Boulder CO.

[RBW] Re: Most Discreet Bell Placement

2023-06-28 Thread Nick Payne
When I was a young racing cyclist in Western Australia some 50-plus years
ago, it was still a legal requirement for a bicycle to have a bell. This
was more honoured in the breach than the observance, and I never saw or
heard of a recreational cyclist being pulled over because they lacked a
bell, but you could be excluded from the start line of a race by a
bloody-minded commissaire if you didn't have one, so we would buy cheap
aluminium bells, drill them out like Swiss cheese, this being the age of
drillium, and fasten them under the saddle.

Western Australia had also previously had the requirement for bicycle
number plates, and although that was no longer the case when I arrived
there in 1963, you still saw quite a number of bicycles being ridden around
with number plates still attached:
https://historical.cc/news/2017/5/12/wa-bicycle-number-plates.

[RBW] Re: Bluelug NITTO FW30 power stem or similar

2023-06-28 Thread Brent B
https://the-inconvenience-store.com/collections/blue-lug/products/nitto-fw30-power-stem-dull?variant=45307626946877

For *$84* before tax and shipping.

BUT at Blue Lug FW30's final price at checkout is *$82.89 *($57.60 + $25.29
shipping to Michigan). The very similar Rivendell Nitto TIG Faceplater is
*$128* before shipping or taxes, and around *$147 *after. The MT-54S Johnny
mentioned can be bought from Alex's Cycle in Japan for $82, plus also
probably-very-expensive shipping. So unless shipping costs way more to
where you're at, it seems like a better deal to buy from BL!

As far as I can tell, anyone who imports Blue Lug stuff to the USA marks it
up enough that it's only really sensible to buy small soft goods like the
safety triangles from an importer to dodge the shipping cost, and that's
only if you're buying one or two items. Nitto stuff especially seems to be
at least a bit cheaper if you buy straight from Blue Lug. The only problem
I have with buying from BL is that when I do, I keep adding more stuff to
my order because they carry too many unique & amazing things. :)

And I agree the Riv stems are way too tall unless you need extraordinarily
high bars!

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Legolas 54 FFHS

2023-06-28 Thread Valerie Yates
Good questions!

I really love riding different bikes and I have accumulated some great ones
over the past 10+ years. Before then, I had only 2 at a time, selling one
when I wanted something else. Then, I got a garage and discovered
Rivendell. Now, I have a beautiful set of awesome bikes that have been so
much fun to ride but I don't need to keep them all. I wanted to make room
for newer styles that interest me. Although it is harder to sell bikes that
I love, I do get a kick out of a buyer's enthusiasm. I spent some amount
of time thinking about the price. I suppose I could have started out
higher. But I like a fast sale and for a buyer to feel it was a good price.

More specifically, I am always looking for a bike that can climb up rugged
dirt roads and also feel safe descending steep roads. Lately, I've been
enjoying the more upright, longer wheel-base, cushier styles. I bought one
of the Gus demo bikes from Riv and that bike was an eye-opener. It is crazy
fun to ride. Great climbing despite its heft. And just a blast descending.
Although I have no plans to sell it, I've been thinking that I don't always
need a bike as burly as the Gus but I really don't need a bike as light and
racy as the Legolas. Its particular appeal is wasted on me. I am more of a
turtle than a hare. With the Gus, I no longer preferred the Clem (which I
recently sold). And now a Susie just turned up locally and so I decided to
sell the Legolas to make room for her.

I am also planning to sell an old style Atlantis. That bike has been
super-fun as well. Still thinking on that one but I think the Susie will
takes its place.

I have a Roadeo and compared to the Legolas, I'd say the Roadeo has
smoother and more elegant handling. It is a joy. For me, it is the perfect
road bike for paved rides. Roadeo is more stable. Legolas more nimble and
tending towards twitchy. That could be because of the short stem I had on
it. The Roadeo feels more like a Soma San Marcos -- another really fine
road bike -- than the Legolas.

If anyone else is interested in a poster (see details in my last post) pls

[RBW] Re: Bluelug NITTO FW30 power stem or similar

2023-06-28 Thread Johnny Alien
I bought one last year (I think) and there was no other source. They are
very similar to the Nitto MT-54S which also has to be purchased from Japan
but might come out a little cheaper? Rivendell has most of their
faceplatters in stock but I think they all fail at being way to tall. I
don't get having long headtubes, a stem with an upward angle, AND a long as
all get out stem to be used with bars that also have an uprise. I had
problems that I couldn't bury them enough to be useful. Hence why I went
with the MT-54S and the Blue Lug stem. I love both of them but the Blue Lug
is a touch better for options. How much does the blue lug one come out to
these days?

[RBW] WTB: Albatross (steel)

2023-06-28 Thread jaredwilson
Hey group,

Decided to keep our Platys and make some amendments, so I'm on the hunt for
a pair of steel Albatross bars to try out.

I've run Billie bars on this bike in the past but I'm looking to get the
bars away from me a little, hence Albatross, plus I'm growing to be less a
fan of the aluminum (sleeved) variants of Nitto bars. Recommendations of a
similar bar would appreciated as well.

Thanks :)

Jared

Nice! Mind...those Spurway bells are so elegant, I'm not sure I want to
hide them😊But I do want to advertise my presence discreetly without
scaring anyone...and I thought Drew Saunders with those bells used by
pow-wow jingle dancers wrapped around his stem had a lovely solution for
that.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Legolas 54 FFHS

2023-06-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I'll say! That was a damned good price for a Legolas!

Questions:

Thanks, V! BTW, I use my right hand for most things but my left hand is
dominant. Sort of weird. So I prefer flipping striker with my left hand.
Spurcycle makes folks meandering catiwompas on the MUPS around here wet

which way they are going. They don’t either 🥵

[RBW] Re: Most Discreet Bell Placement

Lovely! Very discreet. I have a version of that bell sitting very
indiscreetly on top of my stem. I am going to relocate as you have shown to
see how it feels to ding from there.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Silver 170 triple crank

Wow, I did a fantastically bad job with my initial request! I’m looking
for a 170mm crankset, or maybe 167mm if anybody has tripled on of the
external BB versions…

[RBW] FS: Legolas 54 FFHS

2023-06-28 Thread Valerie Yates
I am offering for sale one of the legendary Legolas: frame, fork, Chris
King threadless headset, and bottom bracket. Anyone interested likely
already knows this bike was designed for cyclocross racing and thus is
super lightweight, nimble, and fun. You also know that Riv is not taking
custom orders at present and that they are out of decals for this model.
The yellow is striking. It is a very racy yellow. Pictures here
.

Seat tube is 54 c-t. Top tube is 54.5 c-c. I’’m 5’7” with an 82 PBH and I
used a 60 stem. The person I bought it from was 5’10” and he had a 110 stem
on it. We both had the saddle at 72 (as shown in pics). It takes 700c
wheels and is shown with 700x38 tires.

It has various chips in the paint and some wrinkling of the decal on the
seat tube. In this size frame, there is some toe overlap. This is an issue
only when making very tight turns at very slow speeds. It is not apparent
at riding speeds. If either of these aspects will bother you, this is not
the frame for you.

Questions? Ask away. Interested? Send me a private message.

Best,
Val in Boulder CO

[RBW] Bluelug NITTO FW30 power stem or similar

2023-06-28 Thread Russell Duncan
The Nitto FW30 by Bluelug looks like exactly what I need for a build. Does
anyone know if this is stocked by anyone in the USA? The shipping cost from
Japan for this one item essentially doubles the price of the stem.

[RBW] ISO 54 Roadini

2023-06-28 Thread Andrew Huston
I know there is a new batch on the way but thought I’d see if there is
anything on the market now. Would consider frame or complete. I also have a
neat black sheep klunker I would use as a barter if interested. Located in
Michigan.

That new green does look pretty amazing tho…

[RBW] Re: New Handlebar Suggestions

2023-06-28 Thread Ryan
Nice X0-1; it's in lovely shape.

To the OP: As I've advocated often, Albastache or Moustache bars might work
and you can keep your road levers. You could flip them so they're higher if
the usual configuration doesn't work. But there is certainly a dizzying
array of alternatives for drop bars out there today for us aging baby
boomers. Good luck in your search!

Another couple of swept back bar examples to add to the mix. Yep, I
also have a collection of stems and bars taking up space in the garage.
First bar: Not a Riv/Not a Nitto, but similar to the Albastache,
 mounted with a 25mm rise on a 35 deg x 90mm stem (it's a Whiskey Winston).
Lots of hand positions and a good range of fore-aft hip flexion. I can get
 'aero-ish' on the forward bend.
Second one is a VO Porter on a 70mm Technomic stem. It accomplishes
pretty much the same things. The hoods on the levers provide the forward
 reach.

you could dip your feet by starting cheap ($18) with the (well-made) wald

I'm contemplating moving my Sam Hillborne from dropbar Noodles to some

overwhelmed by the various options. By way of background, all I have ever
know are dropbar handlebars; but at 60, I'm thinking the sweptback/upright
might be a more comfortable option for my back!! I like the idea of the
aerodynamic benefit of the drops, so wondering what style of upright might
offer aero for the occasional headwind. From what I have read on this as
well as a few other forums, the RBW Billiebars seems to get high marks. I
realize bar styles are somewhat subjective, however hoping the vast wisdom
of the RBW Owners Bunch might educate me. TIA!!
