Matthew,

The rear looks like an M772, and the front an M786 maybe?

[RBW] Re: Wheel Builder

2023-08-15 Thread Jon B
I have been happy with three lightweight wheels Peter White built for me.

With my first rear wheel (Mavic Open Pro rim), as I left the shop he said,
"It will never need truing." I was skeptical, but over 20,000 miles later,
it has never been touched by a spoke wrench.

I almost always build my own wheels, but you cannot go wrong with
either Rich Lesnik (Rivendell / Hands On Wheels) or Peter White. I have
 had
wheels from both, and they were flawless. Not local to you though, west
 coast and east coast respectively.

I use Velocity or Velo Orange rims; Phil Wood, White Industries, Paul,
Curtis Odom or classic Campagnolo hubs (Nuovo Record or Tipo); and
Wheelsmith (out of production but still out there) or Sapim spokes. Most
 of
my wheels are now 40 and 48 spoke, but I do have quite a few 36 and even a
 couple 32s.

Oh yes it might help a bit if the bike didn't look so new. With a few
duct tape patches that can be easily solved without hurting the frame.

Re: [RBW] A College Clem

2023-08-15 Thread matt miller
I've been thinking about this situation a lot. (And thinking back about 20
years to my time in college.) I was from a small town, and went to a large
public school. I learned a lot, and a lot of learning is through mistakes.
I did lots of dumb stuff, and minus the time I went flying over the
handlebars and got an ambulance ride, I was lucky to escape without
life-altering implications. My grandpa died when I was in college, and I
still treasure a few small items I have from him. Ultimately, things are
things, but some things mean more than others. It will be up to your family
to decide the best route. I'm not sure it's been mentioned before, but any
thought to taking an entirely different bike first semester/first year with
the plan to revisit taking the Clem second semester/sophomore year?

Good luck with your decision.

[RBW] Broken shifters

2023-08-15 Thread Pam Bikes
I have several broken Silver shifters. The power ratchet doesn't work any
more. My question is if I can get a part to fix the ratchet. If not,
should I throw them in the metal recycling or is there anything I can use
later? I'm not a mechanical person. I just know the ratchet wouldn't hold
after I replaced the plastic washer and when I put a new shifter on, it
worked.

Re: [RBW] A College Clem

2023-08-15 Thread Doug H.
Great story Mackenzy! I think many of us started on BMX bikes. I was an 80s
kid and the group of guys in my neighborhood all had BMX bikes. In college
I rode a Trek mountain bike (low end) but also had a car so the bike was
primarily for exercise. I tried single speed a few years ago and really
enjoy the simplicity of it even with the limitations.

Admittedly, I had almost the exact opposite issue as a college student. I
grew up without cyclists in my family, and think it's so rad that there are
parents like Leah to give a good starting point of living a happily car
free college life.

I was messy messy messy in my hyperfocus niche interests (bikes). As an
adolescent I got into bmx bikes. I had a very high end BMX I kept in my
dorm room under my bunk for the first two years. I worked at a skatepark
and rode with many professional friends. Eventually, a visiting friend

John's question wasn't rude, and was a fair question in that the *strength

You did ask for people's opinions, so please just ignore those you

John,Over the years I have found this forum to be extremely helpful. The willingness of members to answer elementary questions from someone just entering the bike world has been invaluable. I’ve always been appreciative, and I have made it a point to say so.But here on our forum, there also exists an undercurrent of condescension. Every now and again, seemingly out of the blue, someone will pitch a mean comment and change the conversation. It’s happened to me several times, and I’ll never get used to it. We can have 75 helpful posts offering experience and well thought-out opinions and then suddenly one person chimes in with a question that sounds very much like sarcasm. It’s part of the culture of this forum, and it’s unfortunate.John #1’s question could have been genuine, but if so it was poorly phrased, so I doubt it. John #2’s (yours) was out of line and can only be received as rude. I’ve lived long enough that when I hear “calm down” I know it’s usually a man saying it to a woman. If you doubt me, ask yourself if you’d have said these same words to Bill Lindsay. To the rest of you, thank you! I have had so much to think about, thanks to your excellent points and stories about your own experiences on college campuses. And that is all I have to say on the matter.LeahOn Aug 15, 2023, at 1:57 PM, 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch wrote:Leah, please take a breath and count to 10.John's question wasn't rude, and was a fair question in that the strength of his desire for a bike at college could correlate to the amount of attention he would give to keeping the bike secure. You did ask for people's opinions, so please just ignore those you don't like.John On Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 2:22:12 AM UTC-7 Bicycle Belle Ding Ding! wrote:John,Text makes it hard to tell sometimes, so I suppose I’ll ask.1. Greetings
I'm interested in racking my Wald 139 big basket and am curious what
ppl are using for a rack.
I just got an email that the basket rack is back in stock at RBW, and
I'm considering just buying it but I'm really just not onboard with
spending $288 on a front rack despite how well it's made and special it
is.. I may pull the trigger on it anyway but wanted to check here to see
what users of the 139 are doing to attach it to the fronts of their bikes.
I already have an old Nitto R14 "Top Rack" that I know some people have
used in the front and zipped a 139 on top. Mine is older and doesn't have
any diving board provisions so it's only 4 struts but I assume it's strong
enough if installed well. My intention was to use that rack on the rear
 of the bike though.
Any suggestions for a support for the 139 that isn't $288?
 thanks

[RBW] FS: Toyo 61 cm A Homer Hilsen

2023-08-15 Thread Dave C
$2100. I am willing to have REI ship it at buyers expense. I will keep my
saddle and pedals.

My Craigslist posting is here, with pictures:

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/bik/d/carlsbad-fs-61-cm-toyo-built-rivendell/7655093235.html

I recently purchased an early model, Toyo-built A Homer Hilsen from the
previous owner in Los Angeles. My goal was to see if I would prefer the
Homer compared to my Romulus enough to justify the expense. I have invested
a few hundred dollars in new Dura Ace bar end shifters, a new XT cassette,
new 35 mm Gravelking slicks, and longer cables and cable housing to be able
to raise and lower the bars so I can find my desired height. I also
installed fenders and the pictures may show the fenders installed, but I
intend on keeping them and have removed them.

It is a very nice bike, but the Romulus meets my road bike needs and I want
to sell the Homer to buy a bikepacking bike, something totally different. I
put this up for sale months ago on CL, but I have not been trying very hard
to sell it. Time to move it.

I think the frameset is in very good condition, perhaps excellent. There a
few minor paint chips on a chain stay, and some chipping on the pointed
part of the seat tube / top tube lug pointing towards the saddle. I believe
this is a great opportunity for someone who wants a Toyo Homer in a 61 cm
to get one in terrific shape. It fits very much like my previous 61 cm
Atlantis. It actually handles in a very similar manner and that makes it
difficult to sell, but I want to get a fast drop bar mountain bike more
than I want to have an additional 700c country bike.
.
I have a 77 cm saddle height set up as pictured. I would suggest this as a
minimum, and if you are a little taller than me you will probably be able
to run 40+ mm tires with zero issues. Please message me directly if you
have serious interest in this bike.

Regarding the rest of the parts -
Nitto Noodle
Technomic stem, 9 cm (I can swap for another length if you prefer, I have a
5, 8 and a 11 cm.
Dura Ace bar end shifters, new
Kickstand
Nitto seatpost
Velocity Dyad rims, XT hubs
XT Rapid Rise rear derailer
IRD Alpina front derailer

If you want to buy without the wheelset, I will sell it for $1900.

This is going great you guys. I think it was clear after many days and many
posts that the question is "what bike?", not does the kid even want one.
It'd be super if we could stick with that.

Re: [RBW] A College Clem

2023-08-15 Thread Johnny Alien
Written communication can often come off the wrong way. The original
question does come off a bit rough but might not have been intended that
way. In addition I think the "take a deep breath and count to 10" comment
comes off as very condescending (but hopefully wasn't intended that way).
Just as easy to say "I think you may have taken that the wrong way".

In case anyone here’s not subscribed to their mailing list, Swift
Industries currently has a 50% discount code active. I picked up a
Zeitgeist and Ardea bag with the code, in a nice shade of teal that should
pop nicely on the purple Appa!

Discount code is “summerofswift_50”

No affiliation with Swift, I just believe everyone should have equal access
to discounts without needing to subscribe to marketing lists ☺️

+1 for Voile straps for attaching baskets to racks.
I haven't broken any wires on my baskets, but my zip-ties seem to break on
their own. I used to find broken zip-ties sometimes when I did a quick bike
& rack check before heading out. The zip-ties never broke while I was
riding, but would expire in their sleep between rides. Switching zip-tie
brands didn't help, and always parked my bike inside.
I switched to Voile straps without any problems, and now it's quick to add

[RBW] Re: Nitto Campee 27F rack vs rack combos

2023-08-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
Andy Reed used three question marks:
1. regarding the fact that the 27F is hard to find: "Any insights on this?"
Nope. I always bought mine from Alex's Cycle in Japan and even they don't
have it
2. regarding the manufacturability: "Is it just an incredibly
time-consuming rack, they only make a very small batch of them at a time?"
I'm sure it is time consuming, and I expect it's just low priority
relative to other hot sellers.
3. Regarding the status of the 27F: "is the Campee 27F still the GROAT and
worth the wait? I think it is indeed the superior front rack. Whether
it's worth the wait depends on the person doing the waiting. I think that
the best way to run the 27F is with rectangular panniers that are designed
to fit that same size and shape. If you've already got "normal" looking
panniers from Ortlieb or similar, I think that's a weird looking setup. I
personally have one pair of Ostrich and one pair of Carradice panniers to
run on my small collection of these Nitto front and rear racks. I've got 2
of the 27F fronts, one of the more burly "Mt Campee" front I think they
call that the 20F. I've also got two of the 700c rears, the 27R (or is it
R27?).

The only way to do it better IMO is a custom that copies the setup but in
lighter tubing or a more minimalist set of contact points designed around
the bike. Those top notch rack makers are in a class by themselves. Off
the shelf, the Nitto 27F is the business IMHO.

2023-08-15 Thread Tom Wyland
Tubus Tara work well with ortlieb panniers that have stiff backs and a
slide-in plastic hook on the back. The angled pannier mounts with support
bars all around would should work better with floppier panniers or those
with simple bungee hooks. The tubus don't always sit level with the Riv
forks. You may need to flip the top rail upside-down.

The Velo Orange Campeur Front Rack is similar to the 27F with angled
carriers, but they don't come off. The VO rack has better system for
mounting a Rando bag, IMO.

[RBW] Nitto Campee 27F rack vs rack combos

2023-08-15 Thread Andrew Turner
Hello group!
I recently purchased the Nitto Mini Campee front rack for my rando bag with
the idea of adding something like a TUBUS low rider or Marks Hub Area rack
(MF2) for pannier- carrying come S24O time.

Then I remembered Nitto's most grandiose front rack, the Campee 27F and
from my POV, that seems like the smartest, most elegant solution for a bike
that will always carry a central bag with the option of adding panniers.
The only rub is that rack is out of stock everywhere...it seems like Nitto
might not even be making it anymore *(this is pure speculation but it also
seems like VO dropped their front-camper rack as well)*. Any insights on
this? Is it just an incredibly time-consuming rack, they only make a very
small batch of them at a time?

The main reason why the Campee 27F is calling my name is that the low-rider
racks are both modular AND angled. It doesn't seem like the MF2 or Tubus
offerings have that feature and I was wondering if anyone here feels a
difference in ride-quality between angled and vertical low-rider panniers.

Would the Nitto Mini Campee and MF2 combo check all the boxes or is the
Campee 27F still the GROAT and worth the wait?

- Andrew

2023-08-15 Thread Michael Baquerizo
iphone + google groups = tons of typos.

what i meant to say is (and now i see its currently out of stock) buying my
basket rack from blue lug was cheaper despite the crazy shipping price from
JP. allowed me to add some throw ins and justify the shipping for those.
i'd like not have purchased anything otherwise.

laing - do you find the velo orange anti - flop thing works better with it
stretched out as you have it? i've never been too happy with its function
but mine isnt stretched out as much as yours is. i've actually stretched it
more since initially installing it and i don't know i see the difference.
