[RBW] Re: Compliments

2023-11-15 Thread Matti
I noticed the "nice bike!" comments right away after I got my Sam Hillborne
frame built up last winter, having swapped most of the parts from my old
Surly Long Haul Trucker. I think the color (lime olive), the lugs, the
hammered aluminum fenders and Brooks saddle make the bike unique compared
to the typical bike in Portland, so it draws some attention. That
attention does make me extra careful about where and how long I leave it
locked up on the street or at the grocery store.

[RBW] Re: Bosco Knuckle Clearance?

2023-11-15 Thread iamkeith
I have these Velo Orange levers on my bosco bar. They work well. I'll
take a photo tomorrow, when it's light out:

https://velo-orange.com/collections/brake-levers/products/city-bike-brakes-levers

I'm not sure I'd say they're easy to operate from a forward position, on
the curved part of the bar, though. Prior to these, I tried dia compe
guidonnet levers (shown here on the VO site, by coincidence), and they WERE
operable from the curve as well as the straight section.

https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2009/08/guidonnet-levers.html?m=1

I didn't realize at the time, that I had the wrong version, meant for
fatter road bar diameter bars, which was preventing me from fully clamping
them, and thus allowing the levers to rotate when operated from certain
positions. I thought it was a design flaw, and only after subsequently
installing the city brake levers, realized that my error was just a clamp
size. I wish I'd figured it out and given them a more fair try - but I do
like both. They both allow for full bar wrapping, like a drop bar or even
better, and solve the knuckle clearance issue. Flat bar levers don't seem
to make sense for these bars, to my thinking. Plus, why spend more?!

One caution: With the city bike lever, I did have to raise my bars a bit
more than I prefer. Otherwise, the end of the lever was aimed right at my
top tube... a dent and heartbreak waiting to happen. (This only equated
to about 1" of stem showing, above full insertion, but the bullmoose stem
has a lot of rise built in.)

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: XL custom powdercoated Crust Noreaster Complete

2023-11-15 Thread Andrew Turner
It’s cool! I don’t think I’ve had it long enough to really dial it in, but
ever since I saw this same setup from the tumblr page, nutmegcountry, I
wanted to replicate it.

Before these I had 46cm noodles and that was also a comfy ride, but less
confidence inspiring off-road. I have a hunch some bullmoose bars would be
the ticket for ultimate magic carpet atb’n….partially why I’m selling it,
I’d want to reconfigure this damn thing constantly…meanwhile I’m riding a
road bike 90% of the time.

Stand over is roughly 89cm from ground to top of top tube, saddle height is
roughly 80cm from bb to top of saddle. As pictured, the seatpost is quite
higher than that measurement, I forgot to set it before snapping the pic.
I’m 6’2” with a pbh of roughly 91cm.

[RBW] Problem solvers front cable hanger?

2023-11-15 Thread Adam
Hi all,

Does anyone have experience with the problem solvers front cable hanger?
The one with a built-in "cable noodle"?

I had an LBS install Paul racers on my hillborne and they used one of
these. Changing the brake cables this week, I realized what an odd setup
the cable noodle thing is, it puts a 45ish degree bend in the cable for no
real reason. I'm thinking that I should change the setup, any
recommendations? Or is this not an issue?

When I changed the cable, the little plastic sleeve inside the cable noodle
was cracked. Seems like a potential issue for no real purpose that I can
see. Unfortunately there isn't an actual cable stop built into the hanger,
so I think the whole setup may need to be changed.

Thoughts, advice?

Here's the part:

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Kid's First Pedal Bike (Riv parent edition)

2023-11-15 Thread Piaw Na
I will second the Woom series of bikes for kids. The owner has been been
very responsive over the years to my complaints about the early wooms and
now there's very little to fault about them. The joy a kid has on a nice
bike coming down an MTB trail cannot be
beat: https://photos.app.goo.gl/wfaaXekGtGojqDoe8,
https://photos.app.goo.gl/KzNpJ69adZiCrgxDA

We bought Woom 2, 3, and then when the off versions came out the off
versions of the 4 and 5. Rather than get a 6, I found a used Salsa
Journeyman 50cm which worked out well for less money than a new Woom 6.

It had some squeak to it but I changed the seatpost and it seemed fine? I'm
not entirely sure, I switched it out for a B17 just because I love them so
much and found one cheap. I'd work on price with you if you wanted it.

I mean, how many walkers out there know what a Betty Foy is? This last

says, "Nice riv tandem, don't see many of those."

I think there is a wide appreciation of Riv bikes beyond the Riv riders

[RBW] Re: Kid's First Pedal Bike (Riv parent edition)

2023-11-15 Thread John Johnson
Hi Nick,

The Woom is a great bike. But there are other good kid bikes too. As for
what will work for your kid, it probably depends on his/her size and how
comfortable they are on the balance bike already.

I've got a 3.5 year old kid. For reference, he is smack-dab right in the
average sized, 50th percentile of the CDC weight/height for age and always
has been. He was riding at 3 years and 2 weeks old (he'd gotten a Woom 2
for his 3rd birthday). The Woom 2 has been a great beginner bike, but it's
true that he's already gone up on saddle height in the last few months, and
I can see him outgrowing it by his 4th birthday. Of course, we bought the
bike used and they have good resale, so I don't mind selling/upgrading,
etc.

We were on vacation a couple weeks ago and rented a Trek Precaliber 16. He
had no problems at all riding it at his age (again, normal 1-meter tall 3.5
year old). It took him a few minutes to figure out the coaster brake
because he is used to hand brakes, but in about 2 minutes he'd figured it
out. So, I think a 16 in is a reasonable investment if your kid is already
3 and a half and is on the normal to tall side.

Hope that helps.

cheers,

John

 Hi, Bob :) ,

How do you hang it from the back wheel? You take the front wheel off
first, then lift up the back wheel? I guess the bike is lighter without
the front wheel. I'm not sure I'd have the strength.

When I hang mine from the front wheel, I "pop" the front wheel up,
like a wheelie, roll the bike close to the hook and then just need to lift
it up a foot or so to the hook.

[RBW] Kid's First Pedal Bike (Riv parent edition)

2023-11-15 Thread Nick Shoemaker
Since RBW regrettably doesn't make kids hillibikes, I'm going to have to go
a bit outside of my comfort zone to pick out a first pedal bike for my son.
He's ~3.5yo, and more than ready to move up from his 12" balance bike.

Any tips from other parents who have recently gone through the switch from
balance to pedals? I'm leaning toward something like a Woom 3 (16"), since
they seem to be very well regarded, and I'm afraid he would outgrow a 14"
bike too soon at this point to justify the expense. (am I wrong?) Probably
also worth noting that a lot of his riding is currently on trails, so I'm
definitely looking for something that will work well off-pavement, too.
Anyhow, I'll take any advice the group is willing to throw at me - thanks
in advance for your help!

Nick

Bought a Tanaka head from Soma a while back. Liked it so much I bought another.
I used the brass Silca heads for years

Your Tanaka chuck looks like the same thing but looks like it can be installed
directly into a pump hose using a clamp?
I got tired of screwing a Presta adapter on every time I wanted to fill a
bicycle tire, so I got a small electric pump and installed this once. In the
rare case I want to pump up a Schrader, I can unscrew it.

[RBW] Re: Favorite Floor Pump Head?

2023-11-15 Thread Bill Lindsay
The key feature or benefit to the Lezyne for me is that if I end up with a
stubby valve stem and a deepish rim, a slip-on head may not have enough
material to grab on. The screw-on Lezyne needs less stick-out than any
other head.

[RBW] Compliments

2023-11-15 Thread aeroperf
So one thing I’ve noticed - I mean REALLY noticed - about our Rivendell
bikes is that they get compliments.

I ride the Silver Comet near Atlanta.
 https://groups.google.com/g/bicycletouring/c/cFpcvUWqzkA
For 15 years I rode a Diamondback Approach, a decent hybrid bike (as they
called those back in the ’90s). I never heard a word from fellow riders.
Then in 2015 I got a Sam Hillborne. Bog standard, as the Brits say - Sage
Blue, cork grips. I added some fenders and started seriously hitting the
trail for exercise.

Suddenly folks are pulling up next to me (or going past), and saying “Nice
bike!” Now I’m 74 and banging along at about 11 mph, so it’s not tough to
pull up next to me. But this happens 2 - 3 times a year. It surprises me.

A couple of nice ladies went on about the friction shifters and “a hard
leather seat. He’s hard core!”, before riding off on their carbon
Cannondales. A nice gentleman commented at length on the cork grips.
Maybe he was a fly fisherman?

It happened again yesterday when I stopped for water. Two guys also
stopped and were very complimentary about the Sam. One asked to ride it
(sure!) and came back grinning (“If I didn’t already have too many bikes…”)
It surprised my wife, too. I built her up a Platypus last winter, and on
her second ride she got a “Nice bike!” from someone. She came home with
smiles.

Does this happen to you when you ride your Rivendell? Tell us about the
compliments you get.

Funny enough, I seem to get more odd looks on my Tanglefoot Hardtack than I
did on my old Susie. Something about high drop bars and a basket rack
really seems to confuse people. I did have a few “cruiser bike” comments
with the Susie though. Doesn’t phase me at all. I get a lot of questions
about the Hardtack, with the Susie people just thought it was cool looking.

Re: [RBW] Favorite Floor Pump Head?

2023-11-15 Thread Jay Lonner
This is maybe a bit of thread hijack, but for those with air compressors I really like the Efficient Velo inflator: https://www.efficientvelo.com/tools/3-in-1-inflator. In fact when the “tried and liked 2023” thread pops up that was going to be my contribution. We’ve added 3 new bikes* to my household over the past year, and the combination of this inflator and an air compressor has really improved my quality of life — I spend a lot less time pumping, and more time cycling. It’s also encouraged me to experiment more with fine-tuning my tire pressures for different types of riding, which has enhanced my overall comfort no matter what bike I’m on. Highly recommended.Jay LonnerBellingham, WA*For those curious: Tumbleweed Stargazer adventure/gravel bike (mine), Transition Smuggler full suspension trail bike (mine), Specialized Turbo Vado SL e-bike (wifey). I also have a Bantam custom on order to replace my Hunqapillar, and I think my wife’s Cheviot will soon be for sale, so I’m anticipating RBW emeritus status within the next year or so…Sent from my Atari 400On Nov 15, 2023, at 9:51 AM, Patrick Moore wrote:I should have added: Is this the same as the "Hiro" chuck? On Wed, Nov 15, 2023 at 10:48 AM Patrick Moore wrote:Just to be clear, this is the pump head I recently bought from Soma, called the "Tanaka" pump head; $24.99. [RBW] Re: Sizing Down? Pocket ‘Pus.

2023-11-15 Thread Roberta
Hi, Bob :) ,

How do you hang it from the back wheel? You take the front wheel off
first, then lift up the back wheel? I guess the bike is lighter without
the front wheel. I'm not sure I'd have the strength.

When I hang mine from the front wheel, I "pop" the front wheel up, like a
wheelie, roll the bike close to the hook and then just need to lift it up a
foot or so to the hook.

Second recommendation for the Silca 'Hiro' chuck. Going strong after 8
years. $30 at Amazon.

Re: [RBW] Favorite Floor Pump Head?

2023-11-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I've been using the old Silca brass chucks for years and they work fine --
simple, air-tight, secure -- on Presta valves if the gasket is in good
condition and you know how to us it -- chuck cap sufficiently tight but not
too tight, chuck pressed on firmly but not obsessively (in which case it's
a pain to remove) -- but I recently bought a Tanaka chuck because it was on
sale by Soma. Who has experience with the Tanaka and can say how well it
works?

That said, a "80 out of 100" recommendation for the old Silca chuck if you
use Presta valves.

[RBW] FS: XL custom powdercoated Crust Noreaster Complete

2023-11-15 Thread Andrew Turner
Hey group, I'm looking to sell my Noreaster complete bike. All parts except
for some of the drivetrain components have ~100 miles on them so it's all
still quite new. Photos can be found here:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/TvA4uH1sioVBoKW46

General breakdown:
Crust Noreaster frameset size XL custom powder coated chestnut brown w/
patina'd brass accents throughout

Crust 700c dynamo wheelset (I had the frame resized to 130 rear but it can
easily be moved back if that's your thing) w/ Ultegra skewers / lightweight
8 speed cassette 11-30 or 28, I can't remember.

RH Antelope Hill 55mm extra light tires (tan)

Nitto S83 post, dirt drop stem, Albatross bars, Campee front rack

Paul Pewter touring cantis w/ matching levers + gold moon units

Shimano 600 headset w/ patina'd steel cable hangers / stack spacer

All-polished Carmina triple crankset 46-36-26, some pretty dramatic heal
rub on both crank arms from the previous owner.

Spank Oozy black pedals

Ultegra / Suntour derailleurs

Dura Ace 8 speed indexed downtube shifters

Selle Anatomica R2 saddle

Lezyne frame pump

AND a used-once Large Fabs Chest saddle bag (waxed brown + green canvas)

---

This bike rides amazing but I flew a little too close to the sun with the
build

Asking price is $1900 + shipping

Cheers!
Andrew - Brentwood, TN

[RBW] Favorite Floor Pump Head?

2023-11-15 Thread Nick Shoemaker
I've had a Lezyne High Volume floor pump for about 10 years, and I'm kinda
tired of screwing/unscrewing the head every time I inflate a tire (not to
mention the times when the valve core comes out, too...) Does anyone have a
reco for an inexpensive easy to use replacement head that I could install
on my existing pump? Seems like the Riv pumps use a Topeak head, and I know
Lezyne makes several different options, but I'm curious to hear the group's
preferences & experiences.

(I know I could also just buy the Plumpatire, but there's nothing wrong
with my current also-wood-handled pump, so that feels a bit wasteful)

Thanks!
Nick

[RBW] Re: Gus ride shaming

2023-11-15 Thread Nick Shoemaker
Wait a secaren't *we* the 'traditional' mountain bikers?! They're the
ones who need motorcycle parts to ride on a trail through the woods

But yeah, I've rarely ridden my Clem on the local trails without some sort
of passerby amazement/amusement.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone else tried the new Riv seat?

2023-11-15 Thread Chris K
Just put one on and I'm not sure I like it... yet. The material is comfy
but I can't tell where I should be sitting on it, if that makes any sense.
Coming from an Ergon saddle the nose of the Riv saddle is super wide.
That's my least favorite part of the shape.

Great overhead shot of the bars. Can you post some more of the bike?
I'd love to see how the cockpit works with the rest of the bike...

I was riding my Albastached Roadini with TRP levers on the Simi Valley
greenway in SoCal one time when I was greeted with “Nice Klunker bars”, so
I can relate to the misreading of bike components and styles by others.
