[RBW] Re: Rambouillet & Romulus. A visual comparison.

2024-05-31 Thread ascpgh
Small world, I'm around the corner from the coffee shop in Highland Park.
The Garfield water tower only last week became obscured by foliage from my
front porch view to the right. I start many a ride with Stanton Avenue,
over the heights, to Lawrenceville and onward. My orange Rambouillet is
very familiar with having to be relaxed in climbing gear around here.

Told myself I would sell this before getting the bike I wanted, but got it
anyway - and now most of the parts are transitioning over. Just the frame
with HS/BB for sale now. $1850 shipping included, or $1750 local pick up!

Re: [RBW] Touch-up paint

2024-05-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
Orange Sam Hillbornes and Orange Rambouillets are both "sparkly metallic
Orange" in color FAMILY. They are not identical. The multi-coated
treatment of the Orange Rambouillets have been described as a "thousand
dollar paint job". Whether a scratch on an Orange Rambouillet could be
made slightly less ugly with the $50 Hilborne Orange touchup from
Waterford, that's up to the beholder.

I think the touch-up paint is now shipped in plastic bottles instead of

Man, I bought some Chaco suede ToeCoop clogs off eBay last week and they
are awesome. For those who balk at the Bedrock price tag and need the extra
width and arch support they are a great option. Unfortunately, they are no

[RBW] DIY Clem build: segue: cheapest new Clem?

2024-05-31 Thread Patrick Moore
As someone who stands on the sidelines and reads about others' Clems, and
thinks that he too might one day buy one as a sort of "just ride" beater
about town:

Who has spent the least amount of money on a Clem, in what year, and built
with what parts?

Me, I think of buying a very used and cosmetically thrashed Clem frameset
for cheap and building it somehow either as a fixed gear, or single speed,
or with that otherwise despised and useless S3X hub with about 75 miles on
it (tho' that will probably go first to the extremely tall and short late
'80s/early '90s KHS mtb frameset I just bought to replace That Libertas).

Re: [RBW] DIY build or order complete?

2024-05-31 Thread Dorothy C
When I built up the third Riv I bought, a Cheviot, after having bought a
webspecial Appa and a Riv built Roadini, I ran into the classic mistake of
not knowing what I didn’t know, and rejoined a section of 9 speed chain
with the previous pin, instead of using an extra quick link. Shortly after
the build, I was changing gear to go through an intersection when the chain
snapped, completely shearing my derailleur in half and twisting part of the
chain 90 degrees. I wasn’t pedaling very hard. Luckily there was no other
traffic and I was able to push the bike clear of the street. I bent the
derailleur hanger and scraped a couple of spokes and the drive side fender
stay. I do build my own bikes now, but I have a lot more know how than I
did in 2019 when I got the Cheviot.

[RBW] FT: My 60cm Platypus for your 55/54 Atlantis/Appa/Gus?

2024-05-31 Thread Christian B-H
Hi Folks, I love my Platypus, but use it mostly for grocery and kid
carrying and have realized that at my own 200lbs, it flexes just a little
bit too much when I have my daughter on the back of the bike or heavy
groceries in the front.

¿Anyone have an Appa (54 or 57) or Atlantis (55) or Gus (57) that they'd
like to trade for a slightly more road focused Platypus?

Open to frame or complete trades, or a combination.

- Christian in Boulder, CO

+1 on the fender washers and threaded rod. If you're not building bikes
every day, this solution works remarkably well.

Re: [RBW] Re: DIY build or order complete?

2024-05-31 Thread John Dewey
For sure, the axiom 'Know Thyself' applies here.

Regarding the earlier suggestion to 'have at it' should probably be
tempered with honest assessment of your skills and inclinations. I think my
greatest fear has been, among others like cross-threading, for example,
dropping a wrench on fragile tubing somewhere resulting in a nasty dent.

That's just a bad experience right there...and one not so easily remedied.
Scratches not so much trouble as you can touch up, but dents—yikes.
Horrible.
