[RBW] Nitto Technomic Stem

2024-06-25 Thread J S
I believe the Nitto technomic stem is basically the Tallux steel, 225 ht. I
also believe this is the highest stem rise available. I have used these
since I have gone to Albatross and Choco bars. I bought a frame 2 years
ago and unknown to me at the time the steerer tube was cut, the stem height
is about 2.5-3 cm less than on my Sam Hillborne and I believe it is enough
to aggravate my back, going from yesterdays ride. Any suggestions? I may
have to sell the much sought after Saluki frame. If I did with advancing
age, some balance issues I would be looking for a Willbury, Yves Gomes or a
Cheviot as I like the shorter chainstays better. The Saluki is a 54 cm, so
about a 51 by todays models like my Hillborne. I would have to look at the
effective TT lengths on any frame, not sure how Riv sized these step
throughs. All I would need would be the ability to use 42mm tires.

If anyone has any ideas I would be open to listen, or if anyone has any of
the step throughs I have mentioned above they are looking to sell or trade
please let me know.

Thank,

Joel

[RBW] Re: Nitto Technomic Stem

2024-06-25 Thread Erik Wright
Hi Joel,

Soma has a couple options. You could look at the 225mm rise Dirt Drop stem

for some more height, or the mega-tall 280mm rise Nitto Technomic (25.4
version for your Chocos/Albas
)

for even more.

Getting a mixte would be pretty cool, but so would keeping your Saluki!

[RBW] Re: Nitto Technomic Stem

2024-06-25 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Joel,

In addition to what Erik recommends, there is another potential solution:

I assume your Saluki has a 1" (22.2mm) threaded headset? If so, I once
owned this
available

from Merry Sales. I sold it and I made sure to disclose to the new owner
that the bars could be wy up high, maybe too high. You will need to
buy threadless stem(s) to dial in your desired fit. The whole setup will
be ugly, but it could help your overall ergonomics enabling you to keep
your Saluki.

Way back when, I once owned a road bike with very low stack height, making
my fit miserable. I've since sold it. That was before Soma had that tall
adapter available. It is nice that there are solutions out there now that
could improve things. Good luck.

Best regards,

Jeff

2024-06-25 Thread Laing Conley
Purple, 54.5 frame. Silver parts from the stash, maybe old Campagnolo Nuovo
Record or Tipo or Sansin HF hubs, NOS Stronglight/Spidel 93 crankset.
Maybe manual 2 speed - Double freewheel and double crank, 3 tooth
difference on each to keep the wheel in the same location. Fattest tires
that fit. VO Klunker handlebars on Nitto Faceplater stem? Wide Nitto Wavies?

I actually have an NOS 5 speed Regina Oro freewheel and NOS Campagnolo
Rally derailleur in the parts stash - Nah - I love the looks of a single
speed.

step throughs if I can find one.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Inspired Ibisu

2024-06-25 Thread Ken Yokanovich
Heartbreaking, yes. I was so excited for my brother when he texted that his
new frame was supposed to arrive. We generally talk several times a week
and seldom about much more than bikes, bike parts, bike rides, and bike
projects. Yes, it's definitely a "First-World" problem, but I was really
upsetting to hear him so disappointed.

Careful measurements of several most-comfortable reference bikes including
two different 58cm Rivendell Atlantis and a 54cm Rivendell Sam Hillborne
were supplied.I think the difference between expectation and reality was a
result of different philosophies in how a bike should fit. I don't think
it's fair to dictate to a builder "this is how you should make my bike."

I had a very similar experience years ago when I ordered a custom Waterford
touring frame. At the time, almost every professional bike fitter that I
worked with said I should be on a 56 or *maybe* a 58cm frame. When I worked
with Grant on the order of my first custom, I was floored by the idea that
he was designing a 60cm frame for me. My Waterford was beautiful and I
tried to make it work for years before eventually setting up a 61cm
Atlantis.

Turn around time: it's been about 3 months since my brother shared the news
that he had ordered the Ebisu. He's a very humble guy (one of the many
things I love about him) and doesn't like to brag about acquisitions. So,
I'd imagine one could pad that time a bit depending.

Re: [RBW] Roaduno - Are you buying one?

2024-06-25 Thread Ken Yokanovich
I'd go with a Mustard complete and make any changes once I rode it a bit. *
If I were to get one*, but like Mike M pointed out a few posts back:
You lost me at "Long-reach sidepull." I used to have a Quickbeam that I
REALLY enjoyed with cantilever brakes and I have a Frank Jones now that I
love. I think I will hold out for the next batch of Appaloosas, depending
on when my Roadeo is done.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Inspired Ibisu

Sad. Ebisu are my faves. Was this by chance a mis-understanding of a C-C
vs. C-T type of measurement?..

The seller is my brother and avid Rivendell enthusiast / multiple
Rivendell bike owner. In fact, I think that is why the bar is set so high
 *(pardon
the pun)* and the reason behind the sale. The newly ordered frame is
too small, particularly compared with the fit of his other bikes. I'd be
all about buying instead of sharing if we weren't almost identically sized
 :D

[RBW] Front Derailleur Adjustment - Friction DT Shifters

2024-06-25 Thread Jay
I've been riding my Roadini since February and it has been great, although
the FD seems less than ideal. When I'm in the big ring, it works quietly
on only the few smallest sprockets. When I'm the small ring, works quietly
on the 4-5 largest sprockets. I'm often making minor adjustments to the
front DT shifter to line it up so there is no chain rub / noise. I've
gotten used to this and it's not really a big deal, but I was thinking
there may be something I can do to improve things, and figured this group
knows friction!

The shop who built the bike is great, and everything was well done from
what I can tell, so my guess is the FD is set up as good as possible, and
maybe only a very minor tweak is required. Perhaps it's just the specific
parts and how they work together (i.e., not a perfect system).

Before I try and make any adjustments myself I thought I would ask about
others' experience with friction shifting, front derailleurs, or perhaps
this specific from derailleur. My success rate at fixing drivetrain issues
in the past is moderate...though it's not intuitive for me, and I have to
watch youtube videos to learn before doing anything.

Other bikes I have/had are index, usually 105/Ultegra/GRX, and the front
derailleur wasn't noticeable, it just worked, quietly.

The down tube shifters are Dia-Compe ENE Ciclo 11sp, front derailleur is
GRX 810.

Thanks in advance!
