[RBW] Re: friction mode on silver shifters and shimano down tube dura ace shifters slip!

2020-08-27 Thread Andreas
As you state this occurs under hard efforts, it could be that this is due
to a "soft" frame and has nothing to do with the shifting setup.

Noodle user. 42. Anything wider is too much for me.
Nitto 135 I like as well.

Compass parallel maes come in 31.8 or 25.4 btw. Just more expensive (compass)
than the above without added benefit for my use case.

8 extralight, 3 not.
They all get the same cuts as described by the OP, the EL get in addition
the side wall rips.
No experience with the newer endurance models that are JH acknowledgement
that the other models are prone to problems. Hence TK waited for that model
to actually use them.

Northern New England dirt. No gravel (frankly i would have no interest
riding on gravel). Very few sharp stones. Some roots.
Hilly though. Typically 1,000 - 1,500 ft climbing per 10 miles. That goes
along with moderately fast descends on dirt roads.
When exactly the cuts and rips occur I cannot tell as I only inspect tires
before or after rides. Only had one incident where the inner tube
herniated through the side wall rip and burst, luckily the rear wheel. It
happened on a downhill at roughly 35mph, but I do not know when the actual
rip occurred.

Rode them tubeless as well a bit. As an additional feature, it added the
famed sealant thirst (SBH) to the cut and rip issues. They gobbled up
orange sealant like not other tire every and it leaked through the porous
side wall. While JH offered to exchange them and claimed it to be a rare
occurrence, my discussions with other locals riders tell a different story.

They are nice riding tires though which I stuck with them longer than I
should have. I have moved on by now.

[RBW] Re: Is this Compass tire usable?

2019-07-28 Thread Andreas
I have used the park tool patch on 7 compass/rh tires so far.
While it works, it also tells you something about the tires.

Which reminds me, I have about 11 ripped unusable compass/rh tires in the
shed - is there a reasonable way to recycle them?
This year I have moved on to different tires. There is a new endurance
version of compass now that may last longer.

Usage:
7-10,000 annual miles, of which 70% are northern New England dirt roads

Problems:
- flats
- cuts
- side wall rips
- tubeless oozing and gobbling up sealant

Preferred tires:
- Schwalbe Pro One TL 28, measuring 31-31
- Schwalbe G one (former s one), 30 , measuring 30
- WTB exposure 34
- WTB byway 650b 47
- WTB resolute 42

Schwalbe and WTB have tubeless figured out imho
They hand mount easily, inflate with a hand pump, hold pressure w/o sealant
etc.

[RBW] Re: Stovetop Espresso (moka pot) tips please

2017-01-03 Thread Andreas
Here are my steps:

Roast green beans, cool immediately after roasting (Just deposit them
outside in NNE)
Aerate for 6 hours
airtight container overnight
Grind as recommended here - on a Baratza Virtuosa I use setting 20
(espresso is 14, french press is 32 for me)
Use cold water, we have a spring in the yard - so I use water from there
Fill funnel, do not compress coffee
Put stove on L/M so steam will saturate, water or coffee should not boil

I only rinse it with water for cleaning
Works for me, ymmv

Just like it takes over 250,000 miles to become a reasonable cyclist, it
takes 1,000 tries with a Bialetti to make a good coffee. :-)

[RBW] Re: Newbie here: Are Phil Wood hubs worth it.

2010-07-19 Thread Andreas
If you are putting ten thousands of miles on the hub they may be worth
it.
In case you cycling where a hub problem would be catastrophic it would
be worth it.
If you mind repacking a shimano hub every year (or 10,000 miles) they
are worth it.

Shimano hubs are great. And for your intended purpose they are fine.
Save money, go with an ultegra hub.

PS: I ride PW, Shimano, Schmidt and DT hubs and have used each for
many thousands of miles.

Agreed.

Don't do anything new to your bike.

Don't do anything new to yourself (food, liquids). Do what you always do.

I ride 50 - 100 miles on a regular basis with 2 bottles of water and 2
bananas.
Having said that, I ride mostly in the morning ~ 4:30am when it is not hot.

Actually I just rode 50 this morning before work on the quickbeam.
Breaking my rules, two water bottles only - we were out of bananas.
Coffee and a bagel now.
