[RBW] Re: Dynamo Hub Recommendations

2020-05-18 Thread BSWP
I would want the widest hub possible, for the most robust wheel overall.
That is, spoke flanges on the hub as far apart as possible. I've noticed
some hubs are narrower than others, and worry that the wheels won't hold up
to side loads and bumps as well as those built on wider hubs.

[RBW] Re: 1/1/20 Blahg

2020-01-09 Thread BSWP
I also enjoyed the new years day blahg... rambling, informative,
entertaining. I think I need some new fidget gadgets on my desk...

I have two bikes right now, QuickBeam (shift by loosening two 15mm nuts and
sliding the axle or flopping the wheel) and LongLow (friction-mode Shimano
105 barends to a fine six-speed freewheel and front triple). For me,
friction shifting keeps me in tune with the bike, which I like. The rubbing
front der or rumbling rear cogs tell me I need to nudge the lever just a
wee bit more, and I appreciate the communication. But that's me, the
connection with the components is part of the ride, and part of why I ride.

Now, on the new frame, still waiting to be built, I have a Rohloff rear
hub, so it's going to be a purely indexed shifter, the big collar to turn.
Thinking to mount it on the stem... there will be learning involved, and I
look forward to that, too.

Re: [RBW] Appreciation for my 1998 LongLow

2020-01-01 Thread BSWP
Patrick,

I am guessing less than 10,000 miles on the oldest parts. I do lots of
short rides, and a few long rides. The hubs feel smooth and solid, as does
the Phil bottom bracket. Headset with rollers on the bottom is smooth,, no
notchiness. The rides are very different, QuickBeam is... quick to turn,
and less forgiving on bumps. The LongLow has round forks, not ovalized, and
they flex more. It's a very forgiving ride, made all the more so with the
35mm Compass tires.

[RBW] Re: fixed-free hubs & chain line

2018-02-25 Thread BSWP
I'm running a 1/8 chain on my QuickBeam, which has a single ring in front,
and a Dos Eno and fixed cog on the rear. My chain line is not "perfect" but
I'm not seeing any unusual wear on the cogs - that is, the wear seems even
on both sides. What I find more critical is getting the front chain ring
perfectly concentric with the BB spindle. This takes time and patience, to
achieve uniform chain tension through the entire rotation of the big ring.
When it's just right, it's delicious!

I just bought a bunch (and got email confirmation for each individual $10

I'll be needing, down the road.

While I'm here, let me also just say how GREAT the new MUSA Can-Tuck-It
shirts are - fit, looks, feel, coolness. The green, especially, has a
shimmering color quality that shifts as you look at it from different
angles. I already have two, but need to get a couple more, for the long
haul. The sizing however, on the website, is all whack... those instruction
would have had me in a M, where the XL is the right size (I went there in
person to try on).

I've had my QuickBean loaded for light camping (EntMoot!) and it rode like

[RBW] Re: Albastache on what frame?

2016-12-10 Thread BSWP
Thanks for sharing the riding impression, from a year's experiences. I rode
M'bars for over a decade, and was used to the brakes "way out there" I'm
thinking on the wider, flatter, and closer A'stache (A'bars?), I'm going to
bring the brakes back from the front tangent point, for easier reach while
in the relaxed position. I'll get a fresh pair of interrupeurs, just to
play with, but think they could work well on the straight section of the
A'bars between the first and second curves from the stem. We'll see, and as
to weight... heck, this new frame already has a diagatube, a front
wide-body SON, top bag rack, low-rider racks, AND a boat-anchor Rohloff
hub... :--)

[RBW] Fabricated floor-to-ceiling repair stand

2016-12-05 Thread BSWP
After using a proper bicycle work stand a few weeks ago, I knew I needed to
get one for home. But I can't stand wobbly or tip-overy stands, and have no
location in my basement shop for a permanent wall attachment. So I made an
expanding vertical pole mount that goes from the basement floor to the
ceiling, it uses a scaffold screw jack for compression, and a length of 2x2
signpost. The holes in the post perfectly aligned with the Park wall-mount
clamp. I machined a big brass bushing to slip between screw and pole, but
it would probably have worked fine with just a whopping big washer, too. It
works great! No wobble, no rotation, just dead-solid fixture.

Yes, we're sad to see them go, but the sidewalls were deteriorating, and I
won't risk her being stuck with another blowout that fresh tires might
prevent. And the Soma C-Lines (another Panaracer Pasela tread tire) look
pretty good on her black XO-5 with brown Brooks spring saddle.

[RBW] End of the rainbow

2016-10-22 Thread BSWP
My wife has been running RBW speedblends on her B'Stone XO-5 for several
years, the tires came to me when I bought the 66cm QuickBeam, and had not
been sold by Riv for a long time. She got nothing but positive comments on
them, and it was always fun watching them "pulse" while riding alongside
her. Alas, today, the rear breathed its last, and exhaled, loudly, so
loudly that the crew at Hank & Frank & YankYerChain on College came running
out to see what the noise was. I cannot save them, not even with a dollar
bill rolled into the tire, so she's now on a fresh set of 38mm Soma C-Lines
and fresh tubes.

Thank you, dear SpeedBlends, it's been swell:

Re: [RBW] Re: Velocity Dyad/Aerohead vs Atlas

2016-10-14 Thread BSWP
Mark, it's a Riv-inspired frame being built as a collaboration with a
friend of mine in Portland... it will be tall, and have an upward-sloping
TT, a diagatube, long-ish chainstays (19-inch), and built around Rohloff
IGH rear and dyno front hubs. A re-raked RBW fork, and planning to carry
majority of camping load up front in panniers and top box/sack. We're going
to do some interesting things with internal wiring for lights, and as I
said, it's being built around 700c wheels and minimum width 38m tires. Here
are some pictures of the work in progress:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/115397703@N04/albums/72157670612977512

Oh, we're also going to run RAID centerpulls with modern bushings and
salmon pads.

My main concern is tires rolling off the rim, but I think I'll take the

I have Thin Gripsters on both Rivs, and supplement them with wide (&

support on long rides, I don't "pull up" on them at all. Sure, I have a few
scrapes over the years, but I would not say the setup is prone to mangling
my flesh... no more so that chains and sprockets are prone to shredding
fingers. Maybe what helps them work for me are flat-soled shoes, no tread

I have a Phil BB in my '98 LongLow, and I have not paid it any attention in

I have the same situation as you.

Get a loud alarm for the detached garage, as well as the house.

Secure your bikes, when inside the locked garage, to an eyebolt set into

Consider also throwing an old stained tarpaulin over them, to mask their

Very nice. It makes me wonder, have riders ever put shifters on the

mounted on the stem. Us long tall folks might find that a more convenient

[RBW] Re: RBW and Meaning

2016-02-17 Thread BSWP
John, I stumbled onto RBW when I saw a Moustache bar, and mounted it to my
REI Novara XR back in the last century. The bike was woefully under-sized
for me, but the bars transformed it. After I won an insurance settlement
for being doored on my also too-small Centurion (lugged steel!) in West
Berkeley, I took a wild chance and put all the money into a custom-fitted
frame from Rivendell. That's my 65cm 1998 Long Low Custom. Grant worked
with me, selected tubing and specified dimensions, and the bike rode and
continues to ride wonderfully.

But why Riv? The early catalogues & Readers spoke to me at an intrinsic
level... here was a "bike shop" that could build a frame to my exact size,
weight, and riding style, that used old-school techniques, that would
produce something beautiful and lasting. Also something quite distinct from
the average road bikes in other shops. A bike to be proud of, to show off
(a bit), and to ride without ever a doubt to its proper fit. Everything
about the shop, the process, the product line, resonated with me. I plunked
down the money for a "life" membership/subscription, wanting to help them
continue and thrive.

And I continue to be a fan (even if we won't ever see an IGH Riv) because
the design lines, the flow of tubes & lugs, speak to what attracts me to
bicycles - having fun, riding smoothly, traveling long and wide and far. I
avoid using the word "retro" when I describe RBW's bikes, because they are
staking out respectable modern territory, they are not just a throwback to
a past time.

[RBW] Re: what bolts?

2016-02-14 Thread BSWP
I don't worry about securing seat or stem while riding my Riv. But I do
when it's parked outside a store or cafe... a thief wearing wool knickers
and carrying Allen wrenches would look right at home whilst dismantling my
bike.

I like the ball bearing wedged into the bolt head approach, just be sure to
carry a steel pick to pry it out of you need to adjust while on the road. I
put the bicyclebolts items on my wife's XO-5, and they seem to work fine as
reliable fasteners.

I am sad to learn that Riv is holding off on restocking MUSA gear, and
alas, all items in my size are sold out. My thin wool tops and shorts are a
mainstay of my riding. When they eventually wear out, I doubt I'll be able
find similar to replace them with. The fact that the items were made
locally matters a lot to me, as well, they fit and perform to my
satisfaction.

[RBW] Re: The newest BLUG

2016-01-13 Thread BSWP
I know when I give a fin to a bum, it's probably going to booze. That's
okay, I have no higher expectation, despite whatever line they pitched to
me. When I've given warm clothes to shivering people, I had only the most
minimal expectation that it might ease their discomfort for a night,
perhaps longer if they had the sanity and means to hold onto the clothes.
Those are interactions with individual fellow humans, who were in need. But
I feel that money I give to established service and goods providing
organizations is "better spent," in that it will provide benefits to those
who are availing themselves of help, and those are folks most likely to
emerge from whatever chronic situation made them needy. And that's what I
most want to foster.

Just my own two inches of bar tape.

[RBW] Ch-ch-ch-changes... in 2016

2015-12-16 Thread BSWP
Wow, that's a helluva weighty hint Dave dropped today in the RBW Tumblr
blug. Hilsen, Atlantis, and Hunq are all getting "longer" AND will now have
limited upgrades/changes/customizations available. I like it! Go Riv!!

Don't want a kickstand plate, and prefer a normal chainstay bridge? Done!
Prefer Mafac-RAID style centerpulls with brazed posts? Done!
Alternate colours? Done!

And if "longer" means both extended top tubes and a skosh more chainstay,
well, that might be quite nice. I say let them try it, and if a rider
really wants the older geometry, I'm sure those older models will be
available (and now at a higher used price, perhaps). Or, a few years down
the path, Riv might relax the lengths, we'll see. But I think the future
looks BRIGHT, indeed, for new stock frames from RBW. Good on 'em for taking
the risk to change up a bit.

[RBW] Re: Bartape, No Twine

It'll probably be fine for a while, but the twine is also good for taking
the abuse at the ends, besides holding down the tape from coming unstuck.
Twine is easily removed and reapplied, preserving the tape, I happily wrap
it on.

Those are Choco-staches, if you ask me. Just a further iteration on the
'stache bars. And nothing wrong with that, at all. I bet they would be
comfy with road levers up at the curves, and/or some interruptors close in
to the center.

Still on Joe, were frame specs ever posted up? I'm wondering what the
chainstay length is, and the wheelbase on a 62cm frame. Thanks! Just
curious, as I've been riding my QuickBeam with 45.5 cm from center of BB to
center of rear axle, and it rides superbly.

[RBW] Choco Bar question

2015-11-05 Thread BSWP
The new bar is shown using an exposed bolt head at the top of the stem. Is
that by design, or perhaps just expediency in building up the sample bike?
The other Bullmoose models all have a very clean recessed Allen bolt, which
is preferable for many reasons. Aesthetics aside, the recessed bolt is less
likely to scrape you or snag on things.

[RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-10-31 Thread BSWP
I continue to be drawn to a Rohloph IGH for a new bike. One aspect that
slows me down is getting the OEM2 torque arm fixed to the frame. I much
much much prefer a clean install over the unsightly long extension links
that I see, strapped to the left chainstay on many installs. And I have no
interest at all in those cast rear dropouts that have been promoted for the
hubs (like from Paragon) - they just ruin the clean lines of a frame, IMHO.
What I've seen, that looks like a great solution, is a bit of custom
fabrication in the rear triangle to give the OEM2 torque arm a fixing
point, as done here:

http://alexandchristine.smugmug.com/Bicycles/Framebuilding/Wetmorian11/i-T4DZ3pX

Has anyone else found a similar clean way to anchor the OEM2 arm?
