Re: [RBW] Re: Fenders - worth the safety risks? Rethinking my fender use.

2017-05-28 Thread Chris Chen
This thread is bit confusing to me.

Fender related crashes seem anecdotal, I live in western Oregon so rain is
far from anecdotal.

It never gets that bad here in Portland but the last time we had a freak
snowstorm that put a few inches right before rush hour, I rode my 23mm
tyred, old Cannondale race bike home from work, just riding nice and slow;
the narrow tires cut nicely through the slow.

A magical memory.

Re: [RBW] Re: Velocity Dyad/Aerohead vs Atlas

2015-12-07 Thread Chris Chen
Same here. Dyad/Aeroheat on three bikes (I swear I didn't intend this):

700x35 for road
650bx42 for road gravel
650bx54 for rough stuff

And I load 'em up up. I weigh ~145 and put a fair amount on the front and
back; 36 hole.

The Atlas is pretty rim and I think it's a tiny bit wider which might be
nice, but don't ding the Dyad for any perceived strength deficiencies,
'cause where aren't any.

Another take away is what tires and pressures you plan to run; The tire
takes a lot of the brunt of the weight, and with a high enough final
tension on your spokes, you should be great!

Dyads (Rich Lesnik built) for three years with zero problems. I don't put
in a ton of miles and I like to think I ride pretty "light" for my size so
I doubt I've even come close to putting my wheels to any kind of test. The
closest I've come was a high speed jump off a curb (operator errorI
wouldn't willingly do that) and the only negative from that might have been
a spoke that became a little loose, although the wheel remained true.

was time to put this bike together. I have to give a shout out to Pondero,
Stonehog and a few others who's blogs kept me sane and inspired during the
first few months after surgery, when I seriously doubted I'd ever ride

Going to experiment with some Nitto Albatross bars too. Got to keep a
promise I made to Keven at Rivendell when I ordered the frame.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mark's/M18 failures?

2015-07-03 Thread Chris Chen
I've seen three break, but whether the fault lies with Nitto or the user is
up in the air.

I've broken an R-14 rack, but it was overloaded and I was running through
some really nasty stuff.

I've never seen a Mark's rack break. I've seen two of 32-F break where it
goes through the bridge of the work.

btw safety tethers are always a good idea on stuff that's moving :)

[RBW] Joy of Wrenching

2015-06-12 Thread Chris Chen
Life has been crazy for a while, and I haven't had the chance to work on
the bikes in a few months. Just remembering to lube the chain requires
forethought. Tonight I finally started "fixing" my Hilsen with new brakes,
saddle, and cockpit. It felt so good.

Here's hoping you find time in your life for a little soul maintenance

200k in albastaches, no problems; Done two ~60mi days in the Boscos, no
problem, The upright posture really helps keep pressure off the arms. Now,
be careful where you place your brake levers to keep you from "flaring out
your wrists" too much.

Re: [RBW] Re: AHH Brake Ideas

2015-06-05 Thread Chris Chen
I had Paul Racers on my 56 Hilsen with P50 fenders, but the reach of those
brakes is nowhere near that of the silver sidepull. However, since mine is
one of the earlier ones (SA serial number, Toyo build), and was spec'd for
Dia Compe 750s, I'm going to give those a shot with new pads.

Re: [RBW] loaded handling question

2015-06-02 Thread Chris Chen
I found that with the homer + mark's rack + basket load, if I didn't add a
second set of struts to the rack, I'd get these harmonic movements that got
really nerve wracking on decents, etc. Sort of solved it by either

1) irish strapping rack to the handlebars
2) replacing with big front rack

On my low trail chicken, with heavy loads I also get oscillating movement,
but we're talking tens of pounds here, like two cases of beer territory; I
often clamp the top tube with my legs and I it calms it down--in this case
I can definitely see the flexing of the tubes as this happens.

I took the Hennessy on a 10 day tour and I had a fantastic time. The

Soft sided cooler is a good plan; I carried one of those "insulated" bags

I have to say, you may not *need* a fender bolt, but it's nice not to futz
